    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

    — Red Sox 2, Mariners 1– Mookie Betts went yard in ninth inning for the game-winning run.

    — Why Cleveland traded for Andrew Miller: Indians are 4-13 on road in games where winning run scores after 6th inning.

    — Last three years, Atlanta Falcons are 5-17 vs spread in games where spread was 3 or less points.

    — Now that the Bronx Bombers are selling off expensive players, will they lower their ticket prices?

    — Royals 3, Rays 0– Danny Duffy had 16 strikeouts for KC.

    — Astros 2, Blue Jays 1 (14)– Total of six walks, 40 strikeouts in this game. Plate ump Ryan Blakney called so many strikes, you’d think he had both starting pitchers on his fantasy team.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…..

    13) Buck Showalter is the best manager in baseball; his Orioles are 26-8 this season in games where the lead changed after the sixth inning. Showalter gives them an edge in close games.

Toronto lost in 14 innings Monday; they’re 15-25 (4-14 on the road) in games where lead changed hands after sixth inning.

    12) Minnesota’s Max Kepler hit three HRs Monday, the 13th time this year a guy hit three HRs in a game. In 2014-15 combined, there were a total of 14 three-HR games.

    11) Miami Marlins held an auction on TV during one of their games a few weeks ago; it is almost annoying how much it intruded on the broadcast, but they raised $155,000 for charity, so good for them. Some pretty interesting memorabilia got auctioned off.

    10) Chicago Cubs used six different leftfielders during their extra-inning game Sunday night, the most leftfielders ever used in one major league game. One of them was a pitcher.

    9) Royals won Danny Duffy’s last seven starts; they’re 2-18 in last 20 games not started by Duffy.

    8) Brewers’ TV announcer Brian Anderson was saying on TV last night that when he worked in the minor leagues, he got paid $1 a bag for every bag he unloaded off the bus during road trips. When you are in the bush leagues, you make money any way you can.

    7) Fantasy baseball is great fun, except when it isn’t; on July 4, I added Kendrys Morales to my team, after his 26-49 (.531) hot streak that included seven HRs, 21 RBI in his last 14 games.

I traded Morales Sunday, after a 4-week debacle that produced a .177 average, with two HRs, 4 RBI in 22 games.

Last night, in his first game away from the Armadillos, he went 2-for-4 with a homer. Of course he did.

    6) So the Mets let Daniel Murphy walk last winter, on the assumption that Dilson Herrera would be their 2B in 2017. Not so fast.

Murphy might be MVP this year (he is hitting .355), while Herrera was dealt to the Reds Monday for Jay Bruce, who might also walk after this year.

Brandon Nimmo was supposed to get traded instead of Herrera, but one of the minor leaguers the Mets were going to send to Cincy washed out physically, so the change was made.

    5) Former Nationals’ GM Jim Bowden is very good on ESPN’s studio show, describing what goes on at the trading deadline. Learned a lot listening to him Monday.

    4) Weirdness between the Marlins/Padres. Miami acquired Fernando Rodney from San Diego a while back; the minor leaguer the Padres got back has already had Tommy John surgery.

Then the teams made a 7-player trade last week, with Miami acquiring two starting pitchers, but Colin Rea is on the DL already after lasting just 3+ innings in his Marlin debut. The teams sent Rea and minor leaguer Luis Castillo back to their original teams Monday because of Rea’s injury.

San Diego didn’t have to do that, by the way. If a team trades for an injured player, that’s their fault.

    3) A’s traded veterans Rich Hill/Josh Reddick to the Dodgers for three minor leaguers, two of whom are in AAA. Oakland has to do stuff like this; if they do not pitch well, they cannot be a contender and Hill is 36 so it was wise to get something for him.

    2) I took grief on Twitter for saying Jay Bruce’s HR numbers would go down with the Mets; someone produced a computer image that overlaid Citi Field over the Reds’ ballpark with Bruce’s homers plotted and he would have only one less this season.

Impressive graphic, but everything will be different now. Higher pressure environment, Mets won’t be behind as much as the Reds usually are, so he’ll see less fastballs. We’ll see how he does, but I think Bruce’s fantasy owners will be unhappy.

1– Consensus on TV Monday was that this winter’s class of free agent pitchers is very, very weak, maybe the weakest ever so if teams were going to improve their pitching from outside the organization, it had to be done this weekend.
