Stakes raised whenever prospects traded for stars
    August 1, 2016

Maybe Brandon Finnegan will become a star someday. The former first-round draft pick is still only 23.

But when Johnny Cueto was throwing a two-hitter in Game 2 of the World Series last year, Kansas City fans couldn't have cared less about Finnegan's future.

That's the nature of the stars-for-prospects deals that take place every year around the trade deadline. It's a high-risk, high-reward endeavor for a contending team that's giving up future value to boost its World Series hopes. And for the teams dealing away the big-name players, the pressure is still on - those trades can become an embarrassment if the prospects they receive in return don't pan out.

The Royals sent Finnegan to Cincinnati last year in the deal that brought Cueto to Kansas City. Cueto didn't even pitch all that well down the stretch, but a couple terrific performances in the postseason helped the Royals win the World Series. Even if Finnegan turns into a standout, Kansas City will always have that championship.

Of course, it's easy to say a trade was a success if a team wins the World Series. Anything short of that, and hindsight becomes more complicated.

In another deadline deal last year, the New York Mets acquired slugger Yoenis Cespedes, sending pitcher Michael Fulmer to Detroit. Cespedes helped the Mets to their first postseason appearance in a decade and a National League pennant to boot. Fulmer would have to have a special career for Mets fans to think the deal wasn't worth it - but this year the right-hander is 9-2 with a 2.50 ERA with the Tigers, so at this point, both teams have reason to be happy with how things turned out.

The Tigers were on the other end of a trade like that back in 1987, when they acquired Doyle Alexander from Atlanta for John Smoltz. Alexander went 9-0 for Detroit that year and the Tigers edged Toronto in a stirring race for the AL East title. But as Smoltz began putting together his Hall of Fame career, Detroit fans had to weigh that one division title against what they missed out on afterward.

When a team trades away a star, it's usually because its season was going nowhere, so there's less urgency to see an immediate return on the deal. Still, these trades can represent missed opportunities if prospects don't pan out. When Oakland traded Rickey Henderson to Toronto in 1993, the Athletics received former first-round pick Steve Karsay, whom A's general manager Sandy Alderson called one of the top pitching prospects in baseball.

Karsay was never a difference maker for the A's, although he did bounce around the majors for a while as a reliever.

For sellers, the ideal scenario is what Cleveland pulled off in 2002. The Indians traded Bartolo Colon to Montreal when the Expos were chasing a playoff spot while facing possible contraction. The Expos gave up Cliff Lee, Grady Sizemore and Brandon Phillips, and although Cleveland didn't have Phillips for all that long, both Lee and Sizemore became stars for the Indians.

Here are a few developments from around baseball this past week:

    MOVING UP

At this time last year, the Detroit Tigers were trading away some of their top players as their four-year run atop the AL Central ended with a thud. Now the Tigers have a six-game winning streak on deadline day and are one game back of a wild card. This run has come against good competition, too. Detroit swept three games each from Boston and Houston.

The Tigers can look forward to getting Jordan Zimmermann and J.D. Martinez back from injuries as they try to mount a challenge to first-place Cleveland.

    FANTASY FOCUS

Now that Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller are elsewhere, Dellin Betances has a chance to earn plenty of saves for the New York Yankees. Fantasy owners who picked up Betances while hoping for this scenario have been rewarded.

Ditto for anyone who grabbed Pittsburgh's Tony Watson. He's now in line to close for the Pirates with Mark Melancon out of the way.

    LINE OF THE WEEK

Stephen Strasburg allowed three hits in seven scoreless innings Wednesday, helping Washington beat Cleveland 4-1 in a matchup of division leaders.

      Monday's Diamond Notes
      August 1, 2016

      Hottest team:
Brewers (4-0 last four, 6-1 last seven)
The Tigers have won a league-best six straight games but get the day off before opening a series against the White Sox at home, which means surprising Milwaukee will fill this spot. After wrapping up a sweep of Pittsburgh at Miller Park, the team embarked on a seven-game road trip to San Diego and Arizona with personnel matters till very much up in the air. Catcher Jonathan Lucroy blocked a deal to Cleveland over the weekend but may still be moved, while other contenders are sniffing around closer Jeremy Jeffress. Ryan Braun has been dealing with right side tightness and is questionable as well, so be sure to see who will be available if you’re pulling the trigger on the Brewers against the Padres. Jimmy Nelson (6-9, 3.42 ERA) had a 1-3 mark despite a 2.83 ERA in five July outings and has lost six of his last seven decisions. Jarred Cosart (0-1, 5.95), acquired from Miami in the deal for starters Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea, will make his first start for San Diego. He pitched five shutout innings in his first start since April against the Phillies on July 25.

      Coldest team:
      Royals (1-8 last nine)
Fatigue is the latest reason utilized by manager Ned Yost to possibly explain why the defending World Series champs are sputtering entering August. Whatever the case, the fact is Kansas City has dipped to a season-worst six games under .500, ranking 11th out of 15 American League teams. The Royals are 8.5 games behind the Red Sox for the second wild card and own the worst road record in the majors as they open this four-game set at Tampa Bay. Top prospect Brett Eibner was moved to Oakland on Sunday for OF Billy Burns as the Royals seek out a spark with time realistically running out on their ability to turn things around emphatically enough to make a playoff push. The offense has scored three runs or fewer in seven of the last eight games, all losses. Lefty Danny Duffy (6-1, 3.22) has started six consecutive Kansas City wins, earning victories in five straight decisions. Chris Archer (5-14, 4.42), provided he’s still on the roster, will take the ball for the Rays.

      Hottest pitcher:
      Stephen Strasburg (14-1, 2.68 ERA)
Since Clayton Kershaw got hurt, there is little mystery as to the current front-runner in the NL Cy Young Award race. Strasburg finally lost for the first time on July 21 after opening up with 13 consecutive wins, but he got back on track with an impressive effort at Cleveland last time out, pitching seven innings of three-hit ball in a 4-1 win over the AL’s top team. Strasburg will be facing the Diamondbacks for the first time this season but had his worst start of 2015 at Chase Field last year, surrendering eight Arizona runs in 3.1 innings in a 14-6 loss.

Coldest pitcher: Logan Verrett (3-6, 4.12 ERA)
Verrett hasn’t pitched poorly, but he’s been the victim of bad luck in failing to adequately make up for the absence of Matt Harvey. Verrett has been utilized as a swing guy for the Mets, starting games and coming out of the bullpen, but he hasn’t won a decision since April 26 and has only won a single start this season. In fact, New York went 6-1 in games he appeared in during the opening month, but is just 4-16 since. He’s coming off his longest outing of 2016, picking up a no-decision in a 5-4 home loss to St. Louis that Jeurys Familia fumbled, snapping a 52-game streak without a blown save. Verrett will be facing the Yankees for the first time, matched up against veteran CC Sabathia (6-8, 3.95).

      Biggest UNDER run:
      Nationals (5-0 last five, 13-5 last 18)
Strasburg had a 2.08 ERA in July, but gave up more than a single run in only one of his five starts. The OVER had gone 12-2 prior to him landing on the disabled list following his June 15 start against the Cubs. Since then, the UNDER is 3-2. Oddsmakers have set the total tonight at 8 runs as Strasburg squares off against Archie Bradley (4-6, 4.17).

Biggest OVER run: Mariners (4-1 last five)
The Mariners squandered a 6-0 lead in losing to the Cubs at Wrigley, so they couldn't have had the most enjoyable flight back to Washington as they prepare to begin a critical 10-game homestand with a four-game set against the Red Sox. James Paxton (3-5, 4.27) is 1-2 with a 4.82 ERA at Safeco Field this season, while young lefty Eduardo Rodriguez is 2-1 away from Fenway despite a 7.08 ERA over four starts. He'll be facing the Mariners for the first time in his career.

Matchup to watch: Marlins at Cubs
Only one matchup pits would-be playoff teams against one another if the season ended today, so with apologies to New York’s Subway Series, this is a no-brainer. The Marlins recovered from losing their first two home games against the Cardinals by winning on Saturday and Sunday, pulling off yesterday’s in walk-off fashion on Derek Dietrich’s game-winning triple in the bottom of the ninth. Hours later, the Cubs were pulling off a remarkable comeback win in the 12th inning, taking down the Mariners with a three-run bottom of the ninth and a walk-off squeeze play. Chicago owns the best record in baseball and sends Kyle Hendricks (9-7, 2.39) to the mound against lefty Adam Conley (7-5, 3.38) in what looks like Monday’s top pitching matchup. Although Miami may have to win a wild card date to get there, this could be an NLDS preview. The Marlins won three of four against the Cubs in South Florida from June 23-26.

      Betcha didn’t know
: Not only did the Indians coast to an 8-0 win over the A's, completing a series sweep on the same day they made a huge splash in acquiring reliever Andrew Miller from the Yanks, the blowout of Oakland extended their edge in run differential to plus-97. Boston (+84) and Toronto (+81) are second and third, respectively, which should tell you how dominant the Tribe has been in ascending to the AL's best record by percentage points over Texas. Danny Salazar (11-3, 2.97) hasn't lost a decision since May 22. Cleveland is 9-1 over his last 10 starts with last-place Minnesota coming to town.

      Biggest public favorite:
      Nationals (-190) at Diamondbacks

      Biggest public underdog:
      Brewers (+100) at Padres

Biggest line move: Mariners (-115 to -130) vs. Red Sox

MLB betting cheat sheet and odds: Clash of the Titans

The Rangers (62-44) have won the most money for bettors of any team in the majors (+2,378), while the Orioles (59-45) rank third in units won at +1,338.

Our MLB cheat sheet breaks down the best MLB betting notes so you can handicap every series like a pro this week, including a showdown between the American League East leading Baltimore Orioles and the American League West leading Texas Rangers.

                Clash of the Titans

Two of the three American League division leaders square off as the Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles duel in a three-game set at Camden Yards beginning Tuesday night.

Both teams have provided significant value to bettors this season; the Rangers (62-44) have won the most money of any team in the majors (+2,378), while the Orioles (59-45) rank third in units won at +1,338. They’re also a combined 71-33 at home this season - providing a distinct advantage to the Orioles, who are coming off losing two of three in Toronto.

The Rangers took three of four the last time these teams met, with 11 of their 23 runs in the series coming in just two innings - a five-run sixth on April 14, and a six-run seventh on April 16. Relievers earned all three wins for Texas.

                Twin Killing?

Fresh off making a significant trade for the majors’ best reliever - and stunningly missing out on an upgrade at catcher - the Cleveland Indians look to extend their AL Central Division lead with a four-game series against the visiting Minnesota Twins.

The Indians swept the Oakland Athletics out of town to remain 4 1/2 games ahead of the Detroit Tigers, who have won six straight but didn’t gain a stitch of ground over the weekend. And that may not happen for a while if the Indians continue their divisional dominance (30-13 vs. Central foes) against a Twins team that is just 11-25 against divisional opponents.

If that wasn’t enough to convince you, consider the teams’ respective run differentials: The Indians rank first in the American League at +97, while the Twins are second last (-79), ahead of only the Athletics (-82).

                Big Game Fishing

The Miami Marlins were big players ahead of Monday’s trade deadline - and they’ll put their new lineup to the test this week as they play a three-game set against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

The Marlins acquired starters Andrew Cashner and Collin Rea in a seven-player blockbuster with the San Diego Padres as they look to close the gap between themselves and the NL East-leading Washington Nationals. And while this may seem crazy, the Marlins' record since May 1 (45-37) is nearly identical to that of the Cubs (46-36), considered by many to be the World Series favorite.

                Pitching Notes

                * Lance McCullers has been baseball’s top Under option over the past two months, going 0-9 against the total over that stretch. That has been mostly his doing; the 22-year-old has allowed two runs or fewer seven times over that span, and is coming off three straight starts of one run against. With 100 strikeouts over 76 innings, he should be a solid Under bet the rest of the way.

                * One of the top pitching matchups of the week goes Wednesday evening at Comerica Park, as Detroit’s Michael Fulmer takes on Chicago White Sox ace Chris Sale - provided that Sale doesn’t end up on another team at Monday’s deadline. Sale is looking for his first victory since July 2, while Detroit has won six straight with Fulmer - the prohibitive favorite for AL Rookie of the Year - on the hill.

                Hitting Notes

                * One of the leaders in the NL Rookie of the Year race is having a sensational stretch himself. Colorado Rockies SS Trevor Story has been on a tear, belting six home runs and driving in 15 over his previous 13 games. The majority of that damage came at Coors Field (surprise, surprise), and he’ll have a great opportunity to add to those totals with the Rockies kicking off an eight-game homestead Tuesday against the Dodgers.

                * Much has been made of the Washington Nationals’ bullpen issues, but perhaps more attention should be focused on the struggles of right fielder Bryce Harper. The defending National League MVP has a positively putrid .170/.295/.318 slash line in July, and has only six hits - including four singles - since the All-Star break. He’ll look to get going this week with three games in Arizona and another three at home against San Francisco.

                Totals Trend

Over is 3-0 in Jose Berrios’ three career big-league starts. Berrios is expected to return to major-league action Monday against host Cleveland.

                  Baseball Capsules

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Danny Duffy pitched eight innings of one-hit ball and had a franchise-record 16 strikeouts to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 3-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night.

Duffy (7-1) flirted with the Royals' first no-hitter in nearly 25 years before giving up a line-drive double to Desmond Jennings leading off the Tampa Bay eighth.

Jennings came off the disabled list Monday after missing all of July with a strained hamstring.

                  strained hamstring.

Kendrys Morales' 18th home run, a towering shot over the center field wall off Rays starter Chris Archer (5-15), got the Royals on the scoreboard in the seventh. Kelvin Herrera pitched the ninth for his second save.

Alcides Escobar and Lorenzo Cain drove in runs in the eighth for the Royals, who won for only the second time in 10 games.

                  TWINS 12, INDIANS 5

CLEVELAND (AP) - Rookie Max Kepler had three two-run homers and six RBIs, leading Minnesota over Cleveland.

The German-born Kepler homered off All-Star Danny Salazar in the first and third innings and hit another off Cody Anderson in the sixth. Kepler became the first Twin to homer three times in a game since Justin Morneau in 2007. He also had a single.

Joe Mauer was 4 for 4 and homered in the eighth off Andrew Miller, who was making his first appearance with Cleveland after being acquired Sunday from the Yankees.

Jose Berrios (2-1) retired 15 straight after a three-run first inning. The rookie right-hander, recalled from Triple-A Rochester before the game, allowed four hits in six innings.

Salazar (11-4) lost for the first time since May 22.

                  CUBS 5, MARLINS 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Kyle Hendricks allowed just seven hits in his second career shutout, providing Chicago's bullpen a needed breather.

After a wild, 12-inning win a night earlier in which manager Joe Maddon used 22 players, Hendricks (10-7) threw 123 pitches and lowered his ERA to 2.22, third-best in the majors. He allowed three walks and struck out five.

Anthony Rizzo finished a home run shy of the cycle and reached base five times, and Addison Russell had a two-run single in the first off wild Marlins starter Adam Conley (7-6).

                  ASTROS 2, BLUE JAYS 1, 14 INNINGS

HOUSTON (AP) - Carlos Correa hit an RBI double in the 14th inning off Scott Feldman hours after Feldman was traded from Houston to Toronto.

Jose Altuve, who homered earlier in the game, opened the 14th with a single to shallow left field off Feldman (5-4), and Correa followed with his hit off the fence in right-center field. It gave Houston its ninth walkoff win this season, and 14th with its last at-bat.

Michael Feliz (7-1) pitched a perfect 14th inning after Chris Devenski pitched 4 1/3 perfect innings after entering the game in the ninth.

                  YANKEES 6, METS 5, 10 INNINGS

NEW YORK (AP) - Starlin Castro hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning and the Yankees hardly resembled a team resigned to fading away after selling off their stars at the trade deadline, rallying past the Mets in their Subway Series opener.

Didi Gregorius hit a tying single with two outs in the eighth and new closer Dellin Betances worked out of a major jam for his first save this season. Hours after trading slugger Carlos Beltran and pitcher Ivan Nova before the non-waiver deadline, the Yankees snapped a four-game slide.

Wilmer Flores and rookie Matt Reynolds homered for the skidding Mets, who lost their fifth in six games as fans in the sellout crowd of 42,125 traded chants throughout the night following a hectic afternoon at Citi Field.

Castro's RBI came off Seth Lugo (0-1). Adam Warren (1-0) got his first win since returning to the Yankees.

Earlier in the day, the defending NL champions completed deals to land All-Star outfielder Jay Bruce and reacquire lefty Jon Niese.

                  RED SOX 2, MARINERS 1

SEATTLE (AP) - Mookie Betts homered to lead off the ninth inning, Craig Kimbrel got his 18th save in his return from knee surgery and Boston beat James Paxton and Seattle.

Paxton held Boston to a run and four hits over eight innings before Betts hit his 22nd homer off closer Steve Cishek (2-6), who blew a three-run lead in the ninth inning Sunday against Chicago.

Kimbrel made his first appearance since having surgery to repair a medial meniscus tear in his left knee.

Junichi Tazawa (2-1) got the win with a scoreless eighth after Eduardo Rodriguez held Seattle to a run and three hits over 6 1/3 innings.

                  NATIONALS 14, DIAMODNBACKS 1

PHOENIX (AP) - Anthony Rendon drove in three runs, Daniel Murphy went 3 for 3 and Stephen Strasburg got his major league-leading 15th win.

Strasburg (15-1) allowed a run and three hits in six innings, striking out six and walking two. He also had three hits and an RBI.

Arizona starter Archie Bradley (4-7) gave up eight runs and 12 hits in 3 1/3 innings.

                  PADRES 7, BREWERS 3

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Yangervis Solarte drove in two runs, Travis Jankowski had three hits and two walks and San Diego beat Milwaukee.

Carlos Villanueva (2-2) pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief of starter Jarred Cosart, allowing two runs and two hits. Villanueva was the first of four Padres relievers.

Milwaukee's Jimmy Nelson (6-10) exited with four innings pitched and eight hits allowed.

                    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

                    — Red Sox 2, Mariners 1– Mookie Betts went yard in ninth inning for the game-winning run.

                    — Why Cleveland traded for Andrew Miller: Indians are 4-13 on road in games where winning run scores after 6th inning.

                    — Last three years, Atlanta Falcons are 5-17 vs spread in games where spread was 3 or less points.

                    — Now that the Bronx Bombers are selling off expensive players, will they lower their ticket prices?

                    — Royals 3, Rays 0– Danny Duffy had 16 strikeouts for KC.

                    — Astros 2, Blue Jays 1 (14)– Total of six walks, 40 strikeouts in this game. Plate ump Ryan Blakney called so many strikes, you’d think he had both starting pitchers on his fantasy team.

                    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…..

                    13) Buck Showalter is the best manager in baseball; his Orioles are 26-8 this season in games where the lead changed after the sixth inning. Showalter gives them an edge in close games.

Toronto lost in 14 innings Monday; they’re 15-25 (4-14 on the road) in games where lead changed hands after sixth inning.

                    12) Minnesota’s Max Kepler hit three HRs Monday, the 13th time this year a guy hit three HRs in a game. In 2014-15 combined, there were a total of 14 three-HR games.

                    11) Miami Marlins held an auction on TV during one of their games a few weeks ago; it is almost annoying how much it intruded on the broadcast, but they raised $155,000 for charity, so good for them. Some pretty interesting memorabilia got auctioned off.

                    10) Chicago Cubs used six different leftfielders during their extra-inning game Sunday night, the most leftfielders ever used in one major league game. One of them was a pitcher.

                    9) Royals won Danny Duffy’s last seven starts; they’re 2-18 in last 20 games not started by Duffy.

                    8) Brewers’ TV announcer Brian Anderson was saying on TV last night that when he worked in the minor leagues, he got paid $1 a bag for every bag he unloaded off the bus during road trips. When you are in the bush leagues, you make money any way you can.

                    7) Fantasy baseball is great fun, except when it isn’t; on July 4, I added Kendrys Morales to my team, after his 26-49 (.531) hot streak that included seven HRs, 21 RBI in his last 14 games.

I traded Morales Sunday, after a 4-week debacle that produced a .177 average, with two HRs, 4 RBI in 22 games.

Last night, in his first game away from the Armadillos, he went 2-for-4 with a homer. Of course he did.

                    6) So the Mets let Daniel Murphy walk last winter, on the assumption that Dilson Herrera would be their 2B in 2017. Not so fast.

Murphy might be MVP this year (he is hitting .355), while Herrera was dealt to the Reds Monday for Jay Bruce, who might also walk after this year.

Brandon Nimmo was supposed to get traded instead of Herrera, but one of the minor leaguers the Mets were going to send to Cincy washed out physically, so the change was made.

                    5) Former Nationals’ GM Jim Bowden is very good on ESPN’s studio show, describing what goes on at the trading deadline. Learned a lot listening to him Monday.

                    4) Weirdness between the Marlins/Padres. Miami acquired Fernando Rodney from San Diego a while back; the minor leaguer the Padres got back has already had Tommy John surgery.

Then the teams made a 7-player trade last week, with Miami acquiring two starting pitchers, but Colin Rea is on the DL already after lasting just 3+ innings in his Marlin debut. The teams sent Rea and minor leaguer Luis Castillo back to their original teams Monday because of Rea’s injury.

San Diego didn’t have to do that, by the way. If a team trades for an injured player, that’s their fault.

                    3) A’s traded veterans Rich Hill/Josh Reddick to the Dodgers for three minor leaguers, two of whom are in AAA. Oakland has to do stuff like this; if they do not pitch well, they cannot be a contender and Hill is 36 so it was wise to get something for him.

                    2) I took grief on Twitter for saying Jay Bruce’s HR numbers would go down with the Mets; someone produced a computer image that overlaid Citi Field over the Reds’ ballpark with Bruce’s homers plotted and he would have only one less this season.

Impressive graphic, but everything will be different now. Higher pressure environment, Mets won’t be behind as much as the Reds usually are, so he’ll see less fastballs. We’ll see how he does, but I think Bruce’s fantasy owners will be unhappy.

1– Consensus on TV Monday was that this winter’s class of free agent pitchers is very, very weak, maybe the weakest ever so if teams were going to improve their pitching from outside the organization, it had to be done this weekend.

LEADING OFF: Puig to minors, deGrom vs new-look Yanks
                              August 2, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                              SHIPPED OUT

Yasiel Puig is not with the Dodgers for their series in Colorado, and his agent told The Associated Press that Puig expects to be sent to the minor leagues. Adam Katz said Puig was told Monday he'd either be traded before the 4 p.m. trade deadline or sent down. Puig was an All-Star in 2014 after a meteoric rise with the Dodgers, but he has struggled this season with hamstring injuries and inconsistent play. He is batting .260 with seven homers in 81 games.

                              DEGROM VS NEW-LOOK YANKS

Jacob deGrom (6-5, 2.56) leads the Mets into the second game of a four-game Subway Series against the new-look Yankees. DeGrom pitched seven scoreless innings in his last start but got a no decision in a 2-1 loss to Colorado. The Yankees traded Carlos Beltran and Ivan Nova on Monday, joining Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller in an exodus of veterans from the Bronx. Masahiro Tanaka (7-3, 3.16) is up for the Yanks.

                              REINFORCED RANGERS

Help is en route as the AL West-leading Rangers begin a three-game series at AL East-leading Baltimore. Texas acquired outfielder Carlos Beltran, catcher Jonathan Lucroy and reliever Jeremy Jeffress on Monday, bolstering a club that already has the AL's best record and has won four straight games. Yu Darvish (2-2, 3.09) pitches for the Rangers against youngster Dylan Bundy (3-3, 3.46).

                              WASTING BUMGARNER

Madison Bumgarner (10-6, 2.09) leads the Giants into a series at Philadelphia. The Giants wasted a gem from Bumgarner in his last start, when he pitched eight innings of two-run ball in a 2-1 loss to the Reds. San Francisco has scored four runs total over Bumgarner's last three starts. Zach Eflin (3-4, 4.23) is up for the Phils.

                              REBOUND AT WRIGLEY?

Marlins ace Jose Fernandez (12-5, 2.79) tries to get back on track against the Cubs after allowing five runs in five innings in a 5-4 loss to St. Louis on July 28. It was the second time in five starts that Fernandez allowed five or more runs - he gave up nine in a 9-1 loss to the Braves on July 2. Jason Hammel (10-5, 3.23) pitches for NL Central-leading Chicago at Wrigley Field.

                              HELP FROM WITHIN

The Red Sox are calling up top prospect Andrew Benintendi from Double-A Portland, giving the big club a boost in the outfield hours after the non-waiver trade deadline passed. Benintendi is expected to arrive before Boston's game at Seattle. Benintendi was the seventh overall pick in the 2015 draft and is hitting .312 with nine homers, 76 RBIs and 16 stolen bases this season between Class A Salem and Double-A Portland.

                              ICHIRO UPDATE

Marlins OF Ichiro Suzuki, two hits shy of 3,000, received a standing ovation when he pinch hit in the seventh inning Monday. Suzuki lined a 1-0 pitch to Kris Bryant at third, leaving him in a 2-for-18 slump. Bryant threw to first for a double play. Manager Don Mattingly hinted Ichiro may not start until Wednesday's series finale against RHP John Lackey. Ichiro's 37 hits off Lackey are his most vs. any pitcher.

Hottest team: Tigers (8-2 last 10)

Detroit pulled off a pair of impressive sweeps over the last week by taking three from Boston on the road and knocking off Houston in three at home over the weekend. The Tigers routed the Astros in two of those victories, outscoring them 25-6 on Friday and Sunday, while walking off past Houston on Saturday, 3-2. Five of the six victories during this current winning streak came in the underdog role, but Detroit is flipped back to a home favorite tonight as the Tigers begin a series with the White Sox. Detroit owns a spectacular 9-2 record in its last 11 home series openers, but will have to trust right-hander Anibal Sanchez, who is winless in his past 11 starts.

Coldest team: Pirates (1-4 last five)

Pittsburgh had plenty of promise heading into 2016 following three consecutive playoff appearances. However, the Bucs were sellers at the trade deadline, including dealing off southpaw Francisco Liriano to Toronto. The Pirates have fallen to one game above .500 heading into Tuesday’s action at Atlanta, coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of the Brewers. Pittsburgh’s offense put up only five runs in the three losses at Milwaukee, while losing six of its past seven games on the highway. Gerrit Cole will try to turn around Pittsburgh’s recent misfortune tonight as he is fresh off a complete-game three-hitter against the Mariners in a 10-1 triumph his last time out.

                                Hottest pitcher:
Lance McCullers, Astros (6-4, 3.18 ERA)

Houston edged Toronto in extra innings on Monday as the two potential Wild Card squads in the American League meet again tonight. McCullers has been outstanding recently, allowing one earned run in five of his past six starts, while striking out 10 in each of his last two outings against the Angels and Yankees. Houston owns a 6-3 record in McCullers’ nine home starts, as two of those defeats came as a favorite of -200 or more to Oakland and Cincinnati. The Astros have won eight straight home meetings with the Blue Jays since 2014, but McCullers is facing the Blue Jays for the first time in his career.

Coldest pitcher: David Price, Red Sox (9-7, 4.26 ERA)

Call it bad luck, call it what you will, but there have plenty of ups and downs for Price in his first season in Boston. Three times this season the southpaw has tossed eight innings and lost by one run each, including a shocking 2-1 setback to the Angels his last time out as Los Angeles won in the ninth on a two-run throwing error. Price didn’t allow a run in eight innings, which was a major improvement from his previous two outings in which he gave up a total of 22 hits and eight earned runs in less than 12 innings of work against the Yankees and Twins. Boston has compiled a 3-8 record in Price’s last 11 outings, which includes a 1-4 mark away from Fenway Park. Price faces the Mariners tonight in Seattle, a team he beat at home on June 19 by tossing eight innings and actually being on the right side of a one-run victory.

Biggest UNDER run: Giants (5-0 last five)

The reason for San Francisco’s current UNDER run is more about the Giants’ lack of offensive pop as opposed to great pitching. San Francisco has scored three runs or fewer in four of the past five games, but the irony is the Giants’ starters in the last two wins against the Nationals were past-their-prime veterans in Jake Peavy and Matt Cain. The Giants have been ice-cold on the road since the All-Star break, posting a 1-7 record and going UNDER the total six times as San Francisco travels to Philadelphia tonight. Madison Bumgarner takes the mound as a substantial favorite, as the Giants’ ace has finished UNDER the total in four consecutive outings.

Biggest OVER run: Cardinals (5-0 last five)

St. Louis has played some interesting games during its current OVER streak, with three games decided by a 5-4 count, including Sunday’s walk-off loss in Miami. The Cardinals also suffered their worst loss of the season in Saturday’s 11-0 rout at the hands of the Marlins, as St. Louis has put together three streaks of five straight OVERS this season, but are looking for its first streak of six. The Redbirds head to Cincinnati this evening, as four of the first six meetings this season have sailed OVER the total, while the Reds have scored at least six runs in four straight home contests.

Matchup to watch: Rangers vs. Orioles

Texas made plenty of headlines at Monday’s trade deadline by acquiring catcher Jonathan Lucroy from the Brewers and outfielder Carlos Beltran from the Yankees. The Rangers are turning the corner at the right time, coming off a four-game home sweep of the Royals. Texas travels to Baltimore for a crucial three-game series between a pair of American League division leaders. Rangers’ right-hander Yu Darvish takes the mound opposite Orioles’ phenom Dylan Bundy as Baltimore is coming off a thrilling extra-innings win at Toronto on Sunday to snap a five-game skid.

Darvish is winless in three starts since returning to the rotation on July 16, but he has struck out 26 batters in 16.1 innings of work. Bundy picked up a loss in his last start, a 3-1 defeat to the Rockies in spite of allowing two hits (both home runs) in 5.2 innings. The Rangers have won three of the first four matchups with the Orioles in Arlington, including a 4-3 comeback victory in a make-up game on June 20.

                                Betcha didn’t know:
The Cubs are listed in the rare home underdog role tonight against the Marlins, as Chicago shut out Miami on Monday, 5-0. In fact, this is only the second time all season Chicago is an underdog at Wrigley Field, beating Max Scherzer and the Nationals on May 6 by an 8-6 count at +100. The Cubs face another ace tonight as a ‘dog, taking on Marlins’ standout Jose Fernandez. However, Miami owns a 3-6 record since the start of 2015 when the right-hander is listed as a road favorite.

                                Biggest public favorite:
                                Giants (-220) at Phillies

                                Biggest public underdog:
                                Rockies (+110) vs. Dodgers

Biggest line move: Astros (-135 to -165) vs. Blue Jays
