    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Mets TV guy Gary Cohen openly insinuated last night that the baseballs that are being used this year are juiced, so more home runs get hit.

-- San Diego Padres are 15-10 vs lefty starters, 23-38 vs righties this year.

-- QB Jarrett Stidham is leaving Baylor; he was supposed to be QB of the future for the Bears, who've lost a lot of players since the school changed coaches.

-- Cavaliers got a trade exception and the rights to a foreign guy who will probably never play in the NBA in a deal with Milwaukee for Matthew Dellavedova.

-- Aledmys Diaz replaces Cardinal teammate Matt Carpenter on NL All-Star team

-- Paul Goldschmidt doesn't do social media, but he started a Twitter account to help get Jake Lamb elected to the All-Star Game. Thats a good teammate.

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here......

    13) The spending spree that took place in the NBA over the last week has lowered the projections for next year's salary cap, from $107M to $102M.

    12) Next summer will be a circus in the NBA; Curry-Westbrook-Griffin-Millsap-Paul-James-Durant could all be free agents, all at the same time.

    11) Michigan Wolverines are paying Arkansas $2M after cancelling a home/home series with the Razorbacks, so they can renew their series with Notre Dame.

    10) Over the last five years, SEC teams are 17-8 vs Big 14 teams, 14-10-1 against the spread; SEC squads were favored in 23 of the 25 games-- the exceptions were a . Wisconsin-South Carolina bowl in 2013 and a Michigan-Miami bowl game last year.

    9) Ohio State has only six starters back this year, three on both sides of the ball.

    8) Tennessee-Virginia Tech are playing a game at Bristol Motor Speedway on Sept 10; are expecting to draw a huge crowd. Unusual place for a football game.

    7) UNLV's baseball team got a big boost; Greg Maddux is their new pitching coach- his son Chase is on the team. Nothing like having one of the best pitchers ever as one of your coaches- their recruiting should spike dramatically.

    6) Enjoy watching family/friend reactions when young people make their MLB debuts; Thursday it was Tyler Glasnow making his debut in St Louis.

    5) Clayton KershawDallas Keuchel led MLB with 232.2 IP last year; last pitcher to throw 250+ innings was Justin Verlander, five years ago.

    4) From 1976-78, Jim Palmer threw 315-319-296 innings; last guy to throw 300+ innings in one season was Steve Carlton (304) in 1980.

    3) Dick Enberg told a story on the Padre-Dodger game last night, about how the red numbers on the front of Dodger uniforms came to be.

When TV first was invented, in 1951, Dodgers decided the numbers on the front of their uniforms should be red, so they would show up better on TV. 65 years later, they are still red. Never heard that story until last night.

    2) As if our Presidential race couldn't get any more hideous, there are commercials on Root Sports (Pirates-Rockies-Mariners games) supporting a Presidential candidate, all paid for by the NRA. Going to be very difficult for me to vote for either side in this year's elections-- we simply do not have an acceptable option, in my opinion. .

    1) I'll be at the adidas Uprising tournament in Las Vegas in two weeks; am hoping the young man with best name in the country-- Immanuel Quickley will be there. Is there a better last name for a point guard than Quickley?

Live long shots poised to pounce heading into MLB's All-Star break

Seattle’s +50 run differential as of Thursday morning ranked ninth in MLB and is more indicative of a 47-38 squad than a 43-42 organization.

The first half of the 2016 Major League Baseball season will conclude Sunday with a pleasant mix of surprising and predictable results that should help facilitate an exhilarating second half push toward the Fall Classic.

Predictable in the sense that top-5 Opening Day payroll clubs like the Dodgers (1), Red Sox (3) and Giants (5) all find themselves either in firm control of their respective divisional races or within striking distance. Surprising in the sense that the preseason afterthought Baltimore Orioles currently lead the American League East, while the defending champion Kansas City Royals find themselves in the middle of the American League pack.

Since professional baseball expanded its postseason format from eight teams to ten in 2012, 17 of a possible 24 divisional champions (70.8 percent) were leading their respective divisions at the All-Star break, while 30 of a possible 40 playoff participants (75.0 percent) were within 2.5 games of first place by the Mid-Summer Classic.

In fact, of the 40 teams to qualify for the MLB postseason since 2012, only two (2012 A’s and 2015 Cubs) did so after finding themselves more than 7.0 games out of first place in their respective divisions by the All-Star break.

Granted, the 2015 Cubs were trying to chase a 100-win Cardinals team that was 56-33 in mid July, but the 2012 A’s are without question a fascinating story. With a mediocre .500 record (43-43) that resulted in a nine-game deficit at the All-Star break, Oakland went 51-25 over its final 76 games to overtake both the Rangers and Angels for the American League West crown. And the A’s did so in stunning fashion, no less, by recording a shocking three-game sweep of the Rangers over the final three games of the season to win the A.L. West by one solitary game.

Using MLB.com’s postseason probabilities tool, we can go back to 2012 and determine the precise chances each club possessed of qualifying for the postseason on any given date. Using the All-Star break as the date for each season from 2012-2015, here’s what we found out:

              - 20 of a possible 40 playoff teams had a 75 percent chance or greater of making the postseason at the All-Star break.

              - 29 of a possible 40 playoff teams had a 60 percent chance or greater of making the postseason at the All-Star break.

              - 31 of a possible 40 playoff teams had a 50 percent chance or greater of making the postseason at the All-Star break.

              - Only 3 of a possible 40 playoff teams had a 10 percent chance or less of making the postseason at the All-Star break.

It’s this last category that we want to focus our efforts on today, as our mission is to identify which, if any, current World Series long shots may turn on the afterburners during the second half of the season and put us in position to cash a lucrative betting slip.

In addition to the 2012 Oakland Athletics (5 percent), the 2012 Baltimore Orioles (8 percent) and 2015 Texas Rangers (7 percent) make up the three MLB clubs who qualified for the playoffs with a less than ten percent chance to do so at the All-Star break.

Baltimore went 48-29 during the second half of the 2012 campaign and defeated the Rangers in the American League wild card game before falling in five games to the New York Yankees in the ALDS. Aided by a second half Angels collapse, the 2015 Rangers went 46-28 over the second half of the season and won the A.L. West before the high-flying Toronto Blue Jays ended their World Series dream in five games during the ALDS.

So which, if any, somewhat under-the-radar clubs could experience a second-half surge that results in a surprising 2016 playoff berth? Here are three to keep an eye on:

              Seattle Mariners, 43-42 (40/1):
2010 Cy Young winner Felix Hernandez (calf) makes his first rehab assignment Sunday and is expected back with the big club in the very near future after hitting the disabled list on June 1. But more importantly, Seattle’s +50 run differential as of Thursday morning ranked ninth in Major League Baseball and is more indicative of a 47-38 squad than a 43-42 organization. If the Mariners meet their potential during the second half of the season, Seattle should have a solid chance of closing that 3.5-game gap between them and the final American League wild card spot.

              Miami Marlins, 44-41 (40/1):
Almost too quietly, the Marlins have ridden respectable pitching to a surprising place among the National League’s top-7 clubs as of Thursday’s slate of action. But with a -7 run differential (eighth in NL) and a young roster that has little experience in terms of a late season playoff push, Miami will have its hands full come September in a loaded National League. The upside? Miami should be active at the August 1 trade deadline and has the luxury of playing 13 of their final 25 games against the Braves (28-57) and Phillies (40-46).

              Pittsburgh Pirates, 44-42 (100/1):
Eliminate a May 31-June 23 swoon that saw Pittsburgh drop 18 of 23 games and the Pirates would have a record of 39-24 (.619). Wishful thinking, I know, but this club is much better than their current record indicates. The Pirates have been to the postseason in each of the past three years, understand the rigors that come with a September playoff push and get staff ace Gerrit Cole back from a June triceps injury in time to pitch the first game off the All-Star break. Additionally, the Pirates have won 10 of their last 13 games and come at the exceptional price of 100/1, which is absolutely worth a shot.

MLB betting cheat sheet: Flying North

The Jays are one of only three A.L. teams to be at least four games above .500 both at home and on the road. Cleveland and Texas are the others.

                    Flying North

A team to keep an eye on both this weekend and in the second half of the season is Toronto. At this time last year, the Blue Jays were just a .500 team, but had a run differential that suggested they might take off. They did and finished 93-69 with a run differential of +224.

This year, a similar pattern may emerge, but the bad news for their fellow contenders in the American League is that the Jays are already 10 games above the Mendoza Line. Their run differential (+65) is best in the division and trails only Cleveland in the league. They won their sixth straight game Thursday night, taking the series opener from Detroit.

The Jays are one of only three A.L. teams to be at least four games above .500 both at home and on the road. Cleveland and Texas are the others.

                    There’s No Place Like...The Road?

One of the more unusual dichotomies MLB bettors need to take note of from the first half is Arizona’s atypical home and road split. On the road, they’ve actually made backers a significant profit (+11.6 units), actually the second most in all of baseball (Giants). But at Chase Field they’ve been an unmitigated disaster, going 15-32, which works itself out to a net loss of -24.0 units, by far the worst in all of baseball.

This weekend sees them visiting the division rival Giants. True to form, the Diamondbacks swept a (four-game!) series here back in April, but have since lost five of six to them at home. For not just this series, but in general, I’m interested to see if this unusual dichotomy continues. It’s definitely worth keeping track of.

                    What to Look Forward To

Teams that I expect to see their win percentage decline in the second half are: Kansas City, Texas and Philadelphia.

The Royals, who close out the 1st half at home vs. Seattle, continue to be just awful on the road (16-30). Texas, whose 1st half concludes with a visit from Minnesota, leads MLB at the betting window (+26.3 units) as they did last year. But despite leading the AL in wins, they are just seventh in run differential (+27) and their 18-7 record in one-run games will be difficult to maintain. It’s a similar story in the City of Brotherly Love where half of the Phillies victories have come by a one-run margin! Their -91 run differential is worse than everybody in baseball besides Atlanta and Cincinnati.

                    Hitting Notes

                    * San Diego might be baseball’s equivalent of Siberia (not talking weather here), but Wil Myers is a name I’ve mentioned before and he certainly deserves more attention than he’s probably getting. He hit 11 home runs in June and is entered in next week’s Home Run Derby. If interested in playing that event, Myers might be a good bet as it will be contested in his home park where he’s hit 13 of his 19 home runs this season.

                    * Over the last week, the Mets have scored 55 runs, which is a much needed offense surge. They scored nine times in a big win Thursday against the first place Nationals, who they’ll continue to host this weekend. On a personal note, I’ll be at Sunday’s game at Citi Field!

                    Pitching Notes

                    * More Padres! San Diego leads the pitching notes “portion of the program” as well thanks to Drew Pomeranz, who I made the mistake of going against Thursday night. He ended up tossing a two-hit shutout against the Dodgers, improving his WHIP to 1.07 (TSR only 9-8). Pomeranz now has 26 strikeouts in his last 27 innings of work and leads the entire N.L. in opponent’s batting average. Because he’s on a bad team, you might be able to get some good prices on him moving forward. The Dodgers are certainly happy they won’t have to see him the rest of the weekend.

                    * Boston’s Sean O’Sullivan toes the rubber for the Red Sox Friday night in Fenway against a bad Rays team. O’Sullivan has a 3-0 team start record so far, but is not deserving of it given a 6.46 ERA and 1.696 WHIP. Underdog opportunity? He’ll be opposed by Chris Archer, who you can get at a nice price.

                    Totals Trend

Remember that Arizona team I talked about earlier? They’ve also gone Over in seven straight and 11 of their last 13 games.
