  • Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- White Sox are first team since 1979 to turn three triple plays in same season.

-- Does the nine-team CFL have fantasy football leagues?

-- 7pm baseball games in this country are starting at 8am the next day in Japan.

-- One winning ticket for a $524M Mega Millions jackpot was sold, in Indiana.

-- Think Charlie Strong is on the hot seat at Texas? Longhorns are 11-14 in his two years in Austin-- they lost 24-0 at Iowa State LY. Iowa freakin' State.

-- Over last nine years, Kansas State is 20-8 vs spread as a road underdog.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday.......

    13) I go thru this every year at this time, but it is stupid that the All-Star Game will decide who has home field in the World Series. Mind-numbingly stupid.

This was done as a concession to FOX TV after the tie game in Milwaukee a few years ago, when the All-Star teams ran out of pitchers. Home field in the World Series could be determined by who wins interleague play, or it could just alternate, either option would be significiantly better than this.

    12) Because the All-Star Game "matters", All-Star managers get goofy when they select players, making situational relievers All-Stars, while Max Scherzer stays home. The All-Star Game should be for guys having the best year this year, not guys who might help the team win. It is supposed to be a damn exhibition showcase.

    11) Red Sox traded for Arizona reliever Brad Ziegler before they announced Craig Kimbrel needed his knee operated on-- price tag might've gone up if Arizona knew the Sox were hurting for a relief pitcher. .

    10) Speaking of which, there is nothing more depressing to a fan than when his team starts selling off players in July-- A's will be doing it soon, since Rich Hill and Danny Valencia are both in their mid-30's, so whats the point of keeping them, when maybe you can get a prospect or two for them?

Remember, back on August 12, 1987, the Tigers needed another starting pitcher for the stretch run, so they acquired Doyle Alexander from Atlnata for a minor leaguer?

The minor leaguer's name was John Smoltz.

    9) Arizona-San Francisco game Friday night was second one this season where both managers got tossed- first was a Cincy-Pittsburgh game on May 11.

    8) Want to know why the NBA's salary cap is going to be as high as $102M in two years? They put over 16,000 fans in the Thomas & Mack Center last night, for the 76ers-Laker game. 16,000 fans for a damn summer league game at $28 a pop? Wow.

    7) I know it is only summer league, but Ben Simmons, in his first three summer games for the 76ers, is shooting 7-25 from the floor, scoring just 8 ppg. He's grabbed 25 rebounds, had 19 assists, and the Sixers are +12 with him on the court, but he has looked incredibly uncomfortable shooting the ball, even on shots in the lane.

Defenders are going to play so far off Simmons that the 76ers will wind up playing 4-on-5 on offense when he has the ball, unless he becomes a scoring threat.

    6) Oklahoma could be starting a freshman and four sophmores on its offensive line this fall, but three of the sophs started a total of 32 games LY.

    5) Mets' pitcher Matt Harvey is having surgery on his shoulder, which includes having a rib taken out of his body, allowing more space for the muscles around Harvey’s neck and shoulder. Hopefully the surgery .can revive Harvey's career.

    4) Buddy Hield started his pro career with a 5-20 shooting night (1-8 from the arc) in an 85-65 loss to the Lakers.

    3) Angels' 1B CJ Cron was hitting .405 (12-33) with five HRs in July, but then he got hit by a pitch and broke his hand Friday night in Baltimore. He's out for a month.

    2) My fantasy baseball team has more players in the Futures Game (3) than in the actual All-Star Game (2), which might be a good thing two of three years from now, but for this season......not so much.

    1) Tom Candiotti is working on Arizona TV games this weekend; he usually works on the radio, but his presence reminded me that a few years ago, I'm watching a game with Arizona and the Padres, and Chad Gaudin was pitching- he was on my fantasy team.

Candiotti was a good big league pitcher, he was explaining why Gaudin would never be a good major leaguer-- his argument was so logical and convincing that I went right online and cut Gaudin, while he was still pitching that night. Not my finest moment, but it was the right move. Sometimes you just have to listen and learn.

            • Sunday's Diamond Notes
              July 10, 2016

Hottest team: Pirates (9-1 past 10)

The Pittsburgh Pirates are hurtling toward the All-Star break with nine wins over their past 10 games, including a 5-1 mark in their past six home games and 5-1 record in their past six divisional outings, too. The Bucs have also started to pick up the pace against the 'good' teams, going 6-1 in their past seven contests against teams with a winning overall record. After losing seven in a row at home against the Cubs, the Pirates have won the first two games in this series to turn things around somewhat, beating both Jake Arrieta and Jon Lester. The Cubs are in a hard tailspin (see below).

Coldest team: Cubs (1-9 past 10)

The Cubs were humming right along through the middle of June, posting a 47-20 record. Since the last time they faced the Pirates they have won just five games in the past 20 outings. The Cubs will take their third crack at a left-handed starting pitcher in this series after losing the first two vs. LHP. Chicago is also a dismal 2-14 in their past 16 outings against teams with a winning overall record, and they have dropped six in a row on the road. Lately John Lackey hasn't been the answer, either, as Chicago has lost the past four with Lackey on the hill. The Cubs are also 0-5 in their past six away from the Friendly Confines.

              Hottest pitcher
              : Chris Tillman, Orioles (11-2, 3.55 ERA)

Tillman faces an ultra-favorable matchup against the Angels, who lost hot-hitting CJ Cron to a broken hand earlier in this series. The Halos are also starting Tim Lincecum, who has managed an 0-2 record and 10.50 ERA over the past three outings. The O's are 7-3 in their past 10 games against a right-handed starter, and 8-1 in their past nine against losing teams. In addition, the O's are 18-4 in their past 22 with Tillman toeing the slab, while going 21-6 in his past 27 starts at Oriole Park against a team with a losing overall record.

Coldest pitcher: Archie Bradley, Arizona (3-4, 4.81 ERA)

Bradley has won just once over his past seven starts dating back to May 29, and it doesn't look like things will turn around Sunday in San Francisco. He allowed five earned runs, seven hits and four walks in just 4 1/3 innings in his first outing in San Francisco back on April 18. The Snakes have managed just two wins in their past 13 games overall, and just 1-5 in their past six against teams with a winning overall record. And they're just 2-5 in Bradley's past seven outings, so don't expect a turnaround in this final game before the All-Star break.

Biggest UNDER run: Rockies (8-2 past 10)

The 'under' has been the play lately for the Rockies, hitting in eight of their past 10 games, including seven straight matchups against a right-handed starter. The 'under' is also a frequent play when Tyler Chatwood gets the ball, cashing in each of his past four starts at Coors Field, and six of his past eight outings overall. Couple that with the fact the 'under' has hit in 12 of the past 17 games for Philadelphia against NL West foes, and 4-1 in their past five games overall, and Sunday's line of 12 looks a tad bit on the high side.

Biggest OVER run: Diamondbacks (12-3 past 15)

The D-Backs have had the 'over' cashing frequently over the past few weeks, including 5-1 in their past six outings on the road. The 'over' has hit in eight of their past nine games overall, and 15 of their past 18 games inside the National League West. As far as Bradley is concerned, the 'over' is 14-2-1 in his past 17 starts overall, 7-2 in his past nine on the road and a perfect 8-0 in his past eight assignments against divisional foes.

              Matchup to watch:
              Rangers vs. Twins

Regardless of pitching matchup, games between the Texas Rangers and Minnesota Twins have been barn burners. Texas bats have come alive recently, as they have five or more runs in six of their past eight games, with the 'over' going 6-1-1 during the impressive stretch. The Rangers are also averaging 6.0 runs per game over their past seven at Globe Life Park in Arlington while allowing 8.9 runs per game over the past eight. Minnesota's young offense has also been coming alive, especially against Texas pitching. The Twins are averaging 9.0 runs per game over the past five against the Rangers, posting a 4-1 record during the span.

              Betcha didn’t know:

The Giants have won 22 of their past 27 games inside the National League West division, while going 4-1 in Madison Bumgarner's past five starts against division rivals. The Giants are also an impressive 11-3 in MadBum's past 14 starts overall, while San Francisco has consistently cashed against right-handed pitching, too. The Giants are 9-4 in their past 13 vs. RHP, and 37-18 in their past 55 home games against righties. The Giants have won eight of their past nine games against the Diamondbacks, although Arizona is 10-3 in their past 13 trips to AT&T, and the Giants are 0-4 in MadBum's past four home assignments against the Snakes.

              Biggest public favorite:
              Giants (-225) vs. Diamondbacks

              Biggest public underdog:
              Pirates (+145) vs. Cubs

              Biggest line move:
Angels (+200 to +180) at Orioles

              • Giants battle D-backs
                July 9, 2016

ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (38-51) at SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (56-33)

First pitch: Sunday, 8:00 p.m. ET
                Sportsbook.ag Line: Arizona +200, San Francisco -240, Total: 7

                Game 1: San Francisco 6 Arizona 2
                Game 2: San Francisco 4 Arizona 2

Madison Bumgarner and the Giants will be looking to win their final game before the All-Star Break when they host the Diamondbacks on Sunday.

The Giants have been one of the best teams in baseball throughout the first half of the season and they’ll be hoping to head into the All-Star Break with some momentum. They’ll be feeling pretty good about their chances to do so, as LHP Madison Bumgarner (9-4, 2.09 ERA, 132 K) will be on the mound for the team. Bumgarner has really been lights out this season for San Francisco, allowing two or fewer earned runs in 14 of his 18 appearances.

The Giants will, however, be going up against a talented pitcher for the Diamondbacks, as RHP Archie Bradley (3-4, 4.81 ERA, 60 K) will be on the mound for Arizona. The Diamondbacks have had a disappointing first half of the year, but they’ll certainly take a lot of pride in beating this Giants team. They’ll also be out to prove that they can beat a pitcher like Bumgarner on national television.

It will, however, be hard with OF A.J. Pollock (Elbow) still sidelined. He is one of Arizona’s best hitters and it’s not definite that he will return at any point this season, but he did begin throwing last Monday.

Archie Bradley has had an up-and-down season for the Diamondbacks, but he will need to be on his game on Sunday. He’s facing a dangerous San Francisco lineup in this game, so he must limit his mistakes in this one. That is not something he did in his last start, allowing five earned runs in six innings against the Padres on Jul. 4. Bradley did, however, allow three or less earned runs in his three previous starts and will be hoping he can perform like that once again. He certainly knows how to miss bats, but his control is an issue and he is prone to letting up homers.

Offensively, two guys to keep an eye on in this game are 1B Paul Goldschmidt and C Wellington Castillo. Goldschmidt is one of the best hitters in the game and is 13-for-41 with two homers and six RBI against Bumgarner in his career. He has flown under the radar all season, so he’ll be hoping to make a splash on the big stage on Sunday. Castillo, meanwhile, is 5-for-19 with two homers and five RBI against Bumgarner in his career. He has had a good season for Arizona and will be hoping to provide some power in this game.

As previously mentioned, Bumgarner has been an absolute beast for the Giants this season. Not only has he allowed two or fewer runs in 14 of his 18 starts, but he has also kept his opponents scoreless in four of those outings. In his only other start against the Diamondbacks this season, Bumgarner allowed just two earned runs in seven innings of work. He struck out eight batters in that game, but his teammates did not provide him with any run support. The Giants ended up losing that one, but they’ll be hoping for a better result this time around.

San Francisco’s lineup should have no problems getting to Bradley though. The Giants got seven hits and five runs in 4.1 innings the last time they faced Bradley and a similar result would likely mean a victory with Bumgarner on the mound. C Buster Posey and OF Angel Pagan are two bats to keep an eye on for San Francisco. Both guys are 2-for-5 against Bradley in their careers and will be looking to do damage on Sunday.

                • LEADING OFF: All-Star break nears, teams try to stay healthy
                  July 10, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                  EVERYONE OK?

It's the last day before the All-Star break, and teams are hoping their players stay healthy through one more game. Yoenis Cespedes, Craig Kimbrel, Dexter Fowler and Noah Syndergaard are among the guys who recently got hurt and will be out of action Tuesday night in San Diego.

                  BREAK AWAY

Giants ace Madison Bumgarner starts in the twilight at home against Arizona in the last scheduled matchup before the All-Star Game. San Francisco holds a comfortable lead over the Dodgers in the NL West.

                  MURPHY MASHING

NL batting leader Daniel Murphy has homered six times against the Mets this season - last year while playing for the Mets, he had a total of five home runs at the break. He gets one more chance to tag his former team when Washington plays at Citi Field.

                  AS CLOSE AS IT GETS

Mark Trumbo tops the majors with 28 home runs, and looks to boost his total when Baltimore faces Tim Lincecum and the visiting Angels. The Orioles lead the closest division race heading toward the break - they're up two games on Boston and Toronto.

                  WALK THIS WAY

Marlins righty Tom Koehler (6-7, 4.40) is scheduled to start against the Reds in Miami. He began the weekend tied for fifth in the majors with 48 walks, but manager Don Mattingly is pleased with his season so far.

''He has kept us in almost every game he has pitched,'' Mattingly said. ''He hangs in there. I call him effectively wild. He doesn't always hit his spot, but that's tough on the hitter, too.''

                  • Home Run Derby Odds
                    July 10, 2016

The 2016 All-Star festivities begin on Monday night in San Diego with the Home Run Derby. This event has seen plenty of rules changes over the years to keep it exciting as this season's version features eight hitters participating in a head-to-head elimination style contest.

Orioles' outfielder Mark Trumbo leads the Majors with 28 home runs and is listed as the top-seed. Trumbo will square off in the first round against Dodgers' shortstop Corey Seager, who has knocked out 17 homers in his second season.

The winner of that matchup will face whoever comes out between Seattle second baseman Robinson Cano and Marlins' outfielder Giancarlo Stanton. After slumping to start the season, Stanton has found his groove recently as he leads Miami with 19 home runs and is the favorite to capture the Home Run derby crown.

Last year's champion has an opportunity to defend his crown with a different team. Todd Frazier wowed the hometown Cincinnati fans by hitting a total of 39 homers, including 15 in the final round to beat Dodgers' outfielder Joc Pederson. Frazier is now with the White Sox this season and ranks second in the American League with 25 home runs as he faces Colorado's Carlos Gonzalez in the opening round.

Hometown favorite Wil Myers looks to give the Padres' faithful something to cheer for as the San Diego first baseman has hit a career-high 19 homers in the first half and opposes Cincinnati's Adam Duvall in the first round, who is tied for second in the National League with 23 round-trippers.

Below are the latest odds for Monday's Home Run Derby at Petco Park courtesy of Sportsbook.ag.

                    Giancarlo Stanton (Marlins) 3/1
                    Mark Trumbo (Orioles) 7/2
                    Todd Frazier (White Sox) 5/1
                    Adam Duvall (Reds) 6/1
                    Wil Myers (Padres) 6/1
                    Carlos Gonzalez (Rockies) 9/1
                    Corey Seager (Dodgers) 9/1
                    Robinson Cano (Mariners) 10/1

                    • Bettors can swing big when betting the MLB All-Star Home Run Derby

Todd Frazier tries to become just the third player to win back-to-back MLB Home Run Derby titles in San Diego Monday night.

Baseball and betting have been like oil and water since the 1919 World Series. But unbeknownst to MLB, they’ve adopted the most raw and popular format for sports bettors when they switched their annual All-Star Game Home Run Derby over to a tournament-style bracket last year.

I mean, who doesn’t love a good bracket? An estimated 70 million American sports fans filled out a March Madness bracket during the NCAA tournament this year. And guess what? Those friendly bracket pools are sports gambling at its most primal.

And, as we know from that first weekend of the NCAA, anything can happen in a single elimination tournament. That means a No. 8 seed - like Dodgers star rookie Corey Seager - could knock off a top-seeded slugger like Mark Trumbo in the opening round. There really is no rhyme or reason to the home run derby (not a game situation, no runners on base, no count, and BP pitches. How the hell do you analyze that with regular season stats?), so upsets are bound to happen. That means value in taking a flyer on a long shot.

So whether you’re filling out your own MLB Home Run Derby bracket amongst buddies or actually hitting the sportsbook – either online or in Nevada – to place a wager on a single player to win Monday’s derby, you can thank Major League Baseball for being so betting friendly during the Mid-Summer Classic.

Here’s a look at this year Home Run Derby contenders and their odds to win:

                      Mark Trumbo, Baltimore Orioles (4/1)

The American League has been the dominant force in recent derbies, winning seven of the last nine. Trumbo leads the big leagues in dingers with 26 heading into Friday’s action and had two home runs versus the Angels on July 6. He took part in the 2012 Home Run Derby, launching a total of 13 balls over the fence to finish third. He’s matched up with Corey Seager (17 home runs) of the Dodgers in the first round.

Todd Frazier, Chicago White Sox (5/1)

Frazier has been a derby star the past two seasons, finishing second to Yoenis Céspedes in 2014 and winning last year’s event by topping Joc Pederson in the finals. As of Friday, Frazier has yet to go yard this month but did register seven home runs in June after hitting nine in May. Only two men have won back-to-back derby titles: Céspedes and Ken Griffey Jr. He battles bats with Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies in Round 1.

                      Adam Duvall, Cincinnati Reds (6/1)

Duvall enters the weekend with 22 home runs on the season, which is third in the National League. He hit half of his total home runs in May and put up nine in June, but has yet to go yard in July. Before Frazier and Céspedes won the past three derbies (both RH), left-handed hitters dominated the longball competition with five straight lefties taking the derby title between 2008 and 2012. He’s up against Wil Myers and the home town San Diego crowd in Round 1.

                      Robinson Cano, Seattle Mariners (15/2)

The way the derby has plagued power hitters in recent years, allegedly throwing a hitch in a batter's giddy-up following a display in the competition, Mariners fans may be lobbying for Cano to sit this one out. The M’s second baseman, who won the 2011 derby as a Yankee, is finally playing like everyone in Seattle hoped for when he signed with the team for a "bajillion dollars" in 2014, putting up 20 home runs and 56 RBIs. He’s got name-brand value and a derby title, but also just one home run since June 18. Cano faces Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton in the opening round.

                      Giancarlo Stanton, Miami Marlins (4/1)

When it comes to pure power at the plate, Stanton is unmatched. But this isn’t a longest drive competition. He looked like he was on pace for a big day in last year’s derby, earning a bye with six big flys in the opening round, but then laid a goose egg in Round 3. He has 19 jacks heading into Friday and is swinging the hottest bat in the field, with back-to-back two home run games against the Mets this week. Stanton is in a big-name Round 1 bout with Cano.

Wil Myers, San Diego Padres (6/1)

Myers gets the hometown nod in San Diego, and deservedly so. He’s got 19 homers heading into the weekend and will have a home-field advantage in Petco Park, where he’s hit 13 of his total taters. Frazier, then a member of the Reds, won in front of the home faithful in Cincinnati last season. Should Myers get past Duvall, he could face Frazier or Gonzalez in Round 2.

                      Carlos Gonzalez, Colorado Rockies (15/20

You can take the bat out of the Rockies, but can you take the Rockies out of the bat? We’ll find out just how much Coors Field has been boosting CarGo’s numbers this season, knocking 13 of his total 18 home runs over the fence inside the hitter-friendly park this season. Away from the thin mile-high air, Gonzalez has only five home runs and is hitting .279 BA (vs. 362 at home). Despite serving as the major’s biggest home run factory over the years, Colorado has yet to boast a derby champion (0-11).

Corey Seager, Los Angeles Dodgers (13/2)

Seager brings up the rear in the bracket format, seeded No. 8 among these big swingers. The Dodgers rookie shortstop has 17 homers to his name in 2016 and, as of Friday, has one home run since June 24. He’s been to Petco six times this year, failing to pick up a home run in any of those games. Seager may be holding the bat a little tight on the big stage among these household names. “I’m in trouble,” he told reporters when the field was announced. “I’m in a lot of trouble.”

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Madison Bumgarner allowed Arizona's only hit with one out in the eighth inning and matched a career high with 14 strikeouts to lead the San Francisco Giants over the Diamondbacks 4-0 on Sunday night.

Bumgarner (10-4) retired 25 of the 28 batters he faced, including two double plays, and walked one while going the distance for the third time this season.

Jake Lamb broke up Bumgarner's bid with a single. Lamb also reached on an error in the fifth when right fielder Gregor Blanco dropped a flyball.

Beyond that, San Francisco's four-time All-Star was nearly untouchable while notching his fourth career one-hitter.

Archie Bradley (3-5) allowed two runs over six innings.

                              NATIONALS 3, METS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Daniel Murphy kept answering the Citi Field boos with booms, hitting his seventh home run this year for Washington against the team that let him go last winter.

Murphy tops the majors with a .348 batting average at the All-Star break, boosted by the damage he has done to the Mets. He homered three times and drove in 10 runs as the NL East leaders took three of four in this series, opening a six-game edge over New York.

Murphy lined a two-run drive off the facing off the upper deck in the first inning. Overall, he is 22 for 52 (.423) with 21 RBIs vs. his old club.

Jose Reyes hit two home runs for the Mets, including a leadoff shot in the first inning. Steven Matz (7-5) fell to 0-4 in his last eight starts.

Gio Gonzalez (5-8) pitched into the sixth as the Nationals beat the Mets for the ninth time in 13 matchups this year.

                              CUBS 6, PIRATES 5

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Kris Bryant hit an RBI single in the eighth inning, sending the Cubs to a sorely needed victory.

Pinch hitter Matt Szczur doubled to left field with one out against Tony Watson (1-3). Bryant, who had three hits and reached four times, followed with his tiebreaking hit.

NL Central-leading Chicago stopped a five-game losing streak. Pittsburgh lost for just the second time in 11 games heading to the All-Star break.

Pedro Strop (2-2) got the win and Hector Rondon pitched the ninth for his 14th save.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Jacoby Ellsbury hit a three-run homer, and the Yankees overcame a shaky outing by Masahiro Tanaka.

New York scored four runs in the second and six in the fifth, moving to .500 (44-44) going into the All-Star break. The Yankees won three of four from the AL Central-leading Indians.

Tanaka took an 11-1 lead into the fifth, but was charged with seven runs (three earned) and fell one out short of qualifying for his seventh win. Nathan Eovaldi (7-6), demoted to the bullpen last week, allowed one hit over the final 4 1/3 innings for his first career win in relief.

Carlos Carrasco (5-3) allowed five runs - one earned - in 3 2/3 innings. Cleveland, which is 3-6 since a franchise-record, 14-game winning streak, committed three errors, leading to eight unearned runs.

BOSTON (AP) - David Price pitched eight innings in his best start with the Red Sox, and David Ortiz hit a two-run homer.

The victory completed a three-game sweep for the Red Sox and handed Tampa Bay its 22nd loss in 25 games.

Price (9-6) struck out 10, allowed four hits, walked one and hit two batters in snapping a personal two-game losing streak. Brad Ziegler, acquired from Arizona after Friday night's games, finished the four-hitter in his Red Sox debut.

Jake Odorizzi (3-5) got the loss, allowing four runs in five innings.

Donaldson is the sixth player in American League history to hit at least 20 home runs and score 80 runs or more before the All-Star break.

Dickey (7-9) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings to win consecutive starts for the first time since victories at Boston on June 3 and at Detroit on June 8.

Cano's two-run shot to deep right field for his 21st homer extended the Mariners' lead to 5-0. Lind hit a three-run shot a few batters later.

BALTIMORE (AP) - Chris Tillman pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, Chris Davis and J.J. Hardy homered and the Orioles beat Tim Lincecum and the Angels.

Adam Jones and Pedro Alvarez had three hits apiece for the Orioles, who improved to 33-14 at home and reached the All-Star break in first place in the AL East with a 51-36 record.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Max Kepler hit Minnesota's first grand slam this season, one of four homers for the Twins.

Minnesota won three of four at Texas after taking the last two games of its home series against the Rangers the previous weekend.

Kepler's slam came with two outs in the fifth off A.J. Griffin (3-1), putting the Twins up 6-0.

Kennys Vargas, Eduardo Escobar and Brian Dozier also connected for the Twins, who have won seven of their last nine games but still have the American League's worst record at 32-56.

Minnesota's Tommy Milone (2-2) allowed two runs and five hits in five-plus innings.

Despite losing nine of their last 12 games, the Rangers still have the AL's best record at 54-36.

                              CARDINALS 5, BREWERS 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - St. Louis right-hander Mike Leake struck out a season-high 10 over seven innings, and Matt Adams and Randal Grichuk homered.

Aledmys Diaz scored from first on a single in the fifth to snap a tie, and the Cardinals entered the All-Star break having cut a 12-game deficit to the NL Central-leading Cubs to seven.

Adams snapped an 0-for-27 skid with a leadoff drive in the second. That ended a 16 1/3-inning scoreless streak for rookie Junior Guerra (6-2).

Leake (6-7) allowed six hits in his first win since June 12.

                              BRAVES 2, WHITE SOX 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Mike Foltynewicz struck out a career-high 10 in seven innings, leading Atlanta to the victory.

Foltynewicz (3-3), who grew up in the far southwest suburbs of Chicago, allowed five hits and walked none. He struck out the side in the seventh on 12 pitches.

Jeff Francoeur and Jace Peterson homered for Atlanta, which finished with six hits. Jim Johnson worked the ninth for his second save.

White Sox starter James Shields (4-10) allowed six hits, including both homers, in 7 2/3 innings. Jose Abreu had three of Chicago's six hits.

                              ASTROS 2, ATHLETICS 1, 10 INNINGS

HOUSTON (AP) - Jake Marisnick scored the winning run on an errant throw in the 10th inning, helping the Astros rally for the win.

Marisnick led off the 10th with a single off Liam Hendricks (0-2). He stole second on George Springer's strikeout before reaching third on a groundout by Marwin Gonzalez.

After Jose Altuve was intentionally walked, Marisnick scored on Carlos Correa's chopper to third that Danny Valencia threw up the line to first as Yonder Alonso's attempted tag missed Correa. It was the A's fourth error of the game.

Will Harris (1-1) pitched a perfect 10th for the win.

                              MARLINS 7, REDS 3

MIAMI (AP) - Giancarlo Stanton's 20th homer helped the Marlins complete their first series sweep of Cincinnati since 2003.

Stanton, who will compete Monday in the All-Star Home Run Derby, was batting .193 on June 15, but he goes into the break with an average of .233 and 50 RBIs. His two-run homer in the fifth gave Miami a 4-3 lead.

Thanks to three consecutive wins over last-place Cincinnati, the Marlins (47-41) have their best record at the All-Star break since 1997. The Reds were swept in Miami for the first time since 1996.

Miami's Mike Dunn (1-1) pitched a perfect fifth to break the franchise record for career pitching appearances with his 369th.

Cincinnati rookie Cody Reed (0-4) allowed three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings to remain winless in five career starts.

DENVER (AP) - Maikel Franco and Cameron Rupp hit long home runs for Philadelphia, and rookie Zach Eflin got his second big league win.

Eflin (2-2) allowed two runs in six innings.

Colorado's Tyler Chatwood (8-5) gave up four runs in five innings.

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Baseball thoughts at All-Star break.........

                                13) Buck Showalter is a great manager. His Orioles are 51-36, have a 2-game lead in AL East at the All-Star break, despite their starting pitchers being 29th in innings pitched, 28th in ERA- that puts a tremendous strain on their bullpen.

                                12) At an average Dodger home game, they sell over 15,000 Dodger Dogs.

                                11) Does Home Run Derby take a toll on participants?
Last year at the All-Star break Todd Frazier was hitting .284 with 25 HRs, 57 RBI, a .337 OB%.

Then he won HR Derby at his home park in Cincinnati. In his second half last year, Frazier hit .220 with 10 HR, 32 RBI and a .274 OB%. Then he got traded to Chicago.

                                10) A guy named Pat Shine will throw to Giancarlo Stanton at HR Derby tonite; he is the Marlins' video coordinator and in my opinion, the best guy in majors at telling his team when to challenge umpires' decisions via replay.

Shine has been an assistant coach at Cal-Irvine and UCLA; tonight he'll throw BP in front of the whole world. Little different than coaching third for the Anteaters.

                                9) Since start of 2013 season, over is 69-37 with Jerry Meals umping the plate.

                                8) Cubs' OF Matt Szczur once donated bone marrow to a 15-month old Ukrainian girl who was battling leukemia and desperately needed bone marrow that matched hers. He essentially saved the little girl's life, seeing as how she is still alive and well.

                                7) Bryce Harper is a great player, but he is 1 for 26 in his career against Matt Harvey. Miami pitcher Tom Koehler is 3 for 3 in his career against Harvey.

                                6) Cubs go into the All-Star break having lost 15 of their last 21 games; Texas goes into break having lost nine of last 12 games- they allowed 85 runs in last nine games.

                                5) Mike Pelfrey has made eight road starts for Detroit; the Tigers have been shut out in four of them.

                                4) Arizona Diamondbacks are 38-51, 15-32 at home, a huge flop. They traded closer Brad Ziegler to Boston, could dump more guys in the three weeks before the deadline, which is August 1 this year, because July 31 is a Sunday.

                                3) Curse of Cespedes: July 31, 2014, the A's traded Yoenis Cespedes to Boston for Jon Lester and Jonny Gomes- they were 66-41 and had been in the playoffs the two years before that. Since then, Oakland is 128-179 and summers aren't as much fun.

                                2) Shouldn't Colorado have an ex-pitcher as its manager? As difficult as pitching is in high altitude, you'd think an ex-pitcher would help current pitchers when their ERA gets inflated like all Rockies pitchers' do. Nothing against Walt Weiss, who is doing an admirable job in a smallish market, but I'd think about an ex-pitcher as a skipper.

                                1) If the playoffs started today (or tomorrow, or the next day.....)
