    Sunday's List of 13:

    Sunday's six-pack

Pointspreads on some college football games this Labor Day weekend........
    -- Clemson (-8.5) at Auburn
    -- Oklahoma (-9.5) @ Houston
-- Notre Dame @ Texas (even)
    -- Kansas State @ Stanford (-16.5)
    -- Appalachian State @ Tennessee (-19)
......and one from later in the season (Nov 26)
-- Utah State @ BYU (-6)-- This game opened at BYU -1

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday.......

    13) James Shields got traded to the White Sox for Erik Johnson and a 17-year old who has never played a pro game; San Diego is also on the hook for $29M of $56M left on Shields' contract, assuming he doesn't opt out after this season.

    12) In essence, White Sox get Shields for $9M a year thru 2018, a pretty good deal.

    11) Milwaukee SS Jonathan Villar has homered in his last three games, after hitting two homers in his first 51 games. Philly is definitely a hitters' park.

    10) If you care about such things, over is 57-32-3 in interleague games this year.

    9) In Oakland's last 32 games, take out Rich Hill's starts and A's starting pitchers have a 7.90 ERA-- the Donaldson trade has turned into a complete disaster- the two starting pitchers Oakland got were Kendall Graveman and Sean Nolin- no bueno.

    8) White Sox brought up OF Jason Coats who left his first big league game with a lacerated mouth after a collision with JB Shuck. Tough way to begin a career.

    7) NBA teams who won Game 1 of Finals by 15+ points are 11-2 in those series.

    6) San Francisco 49ers aren't favored in any of their games this coming season.

    5) Looking thru social media for the last 36 hours, one thing is for sure; Muhammad Ali posed for a hell of a lot of pictures with fans-- lot of people who are famous themselves were showing off their picture(s) with the Champ Saturday.

    4) Speaking of Ali, back in 60's, when he was training in Miami, one of his sparring partners was Rich Kotite, then a football player at Miami and later head coach of the Jets and Eagles.

    3) I've read almost all the John Grisham books and seen all the movies that were made out of his mostly legal-themed books; in my opinion, the two best movies were Runaway Jury and The Client. I think Runaway Jury is a great movie, with Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman and John Cusack.

    2) I hope actress Jennifer Garner buys her agent a Cadillac for Christmas; she is an awful lot of commercials.

    1) College baseball tournament has a weird dynamic to it; the pro draft begins this coming Thursday, right in the middle of the tournament. Nothing like some of your best players being totally distracted during the team's most important time of year.
Remember the 3 G's Gambling, Golf, Girls not in any particular order.....

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS at ST. LOUIS CARDINALS

First pitch: Sunday, 8:00 p.m. ET
        Sportsbook.ag Line: Cardinals -145, Giants +125 Total: 8

Game 1: San Francisco 5 St. Louis 1
Game 2: St. Louis 7 San Francisco 4

Jake Peavy and the Giants will be looking to earn a road victory over the Cardinals in this week’s Sunday Night Baseball matchup.

This meeting between the Giants and the Cardinals will be the final one of a three-game series between the teams.

Both clubs have championship aspirations this season, but the Cardinals have not been playing the way they had hoped to start the year. They’ll be hoping that RHP Carlos Martinez (5-5, 3.69 ERA, 50 K) can earn them a victory on the national stage on Sunday.

He will, however, be going up against RHP Jake Peavy (2-5, 6.34 ERA, 43 K) and the Giants’ starter has been in a nice groove lately. He has won each of his past two starts and has allowed just one earned run total in those games.

It’s worth nothing that two of Martinez’s past three starts have gone OVER the total and just one of Peavy’s past three starts has gone OVER. Martinez is also a miserable 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA versus the Giants over the past three seasons, but Peavy has not faced the Cardinals in that time.

OFs Angel Pagan (Hamstring) and Hunter Pence (Hamstring) are both going to miss this game, as they were both placed on the 15-day DL a little under a week ago.

Jake Peavy started the season off with a string of awful performances and it looked as though he was heading towards a miserable year.

Peavy has, however, bounced back for the Giants. In three of his past four starts, Peavy has allowed one or less earned runs and he allowed just one hit in a seven-inning shutout against the Braves on May 31.

San Francisco will be hoping that the good Peavy shows up on Sunday, as it will not be easy for the Giants to win if Peavy is pitching as poorly as he did in his first couple of starts.

Offensively, one guy that could be an x-factor in this one is OF Gregor Blanco. Blanco is not really known as much of a hitter, but he is 4-for-4 against Martinez in his career.

One of those hits was a double and another was a triple, so he could provide a spark for San Francisco in this one. The Giants will also need Buster Posey to make an impact in this one. He is just 1-for-4 against Martinez in his career, but he could be a bit better after seeing him a few times now.

Carlos Martinez has been very inconsistent this season, but he is coming into this game after his best performance of the year.

Martinez faced the Brewers on May 30 and pitched eight innings of shutout baseball in a 6-0 victory for the Cardinals. Martinez struck out eight batters in that game and walked just one. His control has been an issue this season, so it was big that he avoided walking too many batters in that one.

Martinez had previously walked three batters in each of his previous four games and will need to make sure he keeps runners off the bases on Sunday. Offensively, one guy that could have a major impact in this game is OF Matt Holliday.

Holliday has really gotten to Peavy in his career, going 8-for-28 with a homer and five RBI against him in his career. He has also drawn 10 walks and it’d be big if he can produce on Sunday.

LEADING OFF: Arrieta wraps homestand, Quintana up for Sox
          June 5, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

          ONE MORE AT WRIGLEY

The Cubs seek their major league-best 40th victory when ace Jake Arrieta faces Arizona to close a 10-game homestand. Arrieta (9-0, 1.56 ERA) will attempt to win his 21st straight decision and move closer to Carl Hubbell's major league record of 24. The Cubs have won 10 of 11, with the lone defeat coming in Arrieta's last start Monday against the Dodgers. Arrieta went seven scoreless innings before the bullpen faltered in the 5-0 loss, ending a Cubs streak of 23 straight victories when he starts.

          CHICAGO'S OTHER ACE?

White Sox LHP Jose Quintana (5-5, 2.13) takes on Tigers RHP Justin Verlander (4-5, 4.11) with an impressive string of success to his name. Over his past 16 starts dating back to last August, Quintana is 7-5 with a 1.92 ERA. The 27-year-old is performing well by advanced metrics, too - he entered Saturday ranked third among pitchers with 2.7 wins above replacement, per Fangraphs, trailing only Clayton Kershaw and Noah Syndergaard.

          NICE MATCHUP

Marlins ace Jose Fernandez (8-2, 2.53) is scheduled to start vs. Mets RHP Matt Harvey (4-7, 5.37), who showed signs of shaking his early-season doldrums by pitching seven shutout innings to beat the White Sox in his most recent outing.

''It's another step,'' Mets manager Terry Collins said. ''I don't think you can say that because in one game he pitched so well, it's all solved. Sunday is a huge challenge. But you can't worry about who they pitch. If he pitches his game, we'll be in good shape, because he's got great stuff.''

Fernandez is 6-0 in his past six starts with a 1.38 ERA. He's 22-1 in 32 career starts at Marlins Park.

          BREAKOUT BREWER

Jonathan Villar tries to homer in a fourth straight game when Milwaukee wraps a four-game set at Philadelphia. Villar had two homers in 51 games before the series began but now is approaching his career high of seven homers from 2014. The shortstop is batting .313 with a career-high 20 stolen bases this season.

          HE'S BACK

Sonny Gray (3-5, 6.19) is set to come off the disabled list and pitch for the A's at Houston. He was scheduled to make a rehabilitation start for Class A Stockton, but his return was pushed up when Rich Hill was scratched because of a strained groin.
