    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- A couple drove 45 hours from California to be in Pittsbugh for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals; they must like talking to each other.

-- NASCAR driver Brad Keselowski tweeted that he lost eight pounds driving in the 600-mile Charlotte race Sunday night. If i drove 600 miles, I'd gain a couple pounds from my 2-3 stops at McDonald's or some other healthy eating place.

-- Legendary baseball coach Augie Garrido was forced out as coach at Texas. He won three national titles at Cal State-Fullerton, two more at Texas.

-- Median age of Americans is 37.3. Texas is the third-youngest state in the US.

-- Poverty rate amongst seniors in this country in 9.4%. In both Texas/New York, it is 11.3%. There are 32 public golf courses in Austin, TX alone, by the way.

-- There were 107 shootouts in the NHL this year, lowest amount they've had. New overtime system, with fewer players on the ice, is probably responsible.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Hey!! Things its OK to say on last day of May

    13) Stupid Scheduling Dept: Giants played in Denver Sunday afternoon, had a 1pm game Monday in Atlanta- they couldn't play a 5:00 or 6:00 game Monday?

Dodgers play in Queens Sunday night, then had a 5pm game in Chicago; not quite as bad, but still, the teams that play on Sunday night and have to travel after should play a night game on Monday. .

    12) Cubs 2, Dodgers 0-- WP- Wood 3-0, LP- Wood 1-4. All of which reminds me that from 1971-75, a 5-year period, White Sox pitcher Wilbur Wood started 224 games, an average of 44.8 starts per year (most any pitcher starts now is usually 32 or so).

Wood was a knuckleballer who went 24-20 in 1973, 20-19 in '74 and once started both games in a doubleheader. He also had 57 saves in an interesting career.

    11) There have been six major league games this year where a team got only one hit for the game, but those teams are a surprising 3-3 in those games.

    10) I watch these mini-series on Showtime, like Billions or House of Lies and I'm not eager to trust any human on the planet-- is everyone a scoundrel? Can anyone be a trusted friend? On these shows, its almost like a WWE storyline, where people turn on each other at the drop of a hat. Every man for himself. Kind of sad.

    9) Baylor hired former Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe as its interim football coach, after a string of off-field problem that caused Art Briles to get fired recently. I've long been a fan of Grobe; he won an ACC ttile at Wake Forest, a huge accomplishment.

Not sure what happens to Baylor's assistants; don't think they can fire them all, since that could lead to a mass exodus of players via transfer. No matter what the school says, they want/need a winning team and good players are responsible for that,.

    8) Clayton Kershaw is making $34,571,429 this year, over $1M per start; not sure how you take him out in a key spot Sunday night to bring in a situational lefty in a big spot, when the reliever makes the major league minimum. By my count, Granderson is 3-17 in his career vs Kershaw, with a double in his first AB Sunday. Odd decision.

    7) Dodgers have a payroll of $249,781,668, a huge payroll, yet they have an entry level manager running their games- it makes no sense. Roberts has never managed in the minor leagues- he ran one game in San Diego LY after Bud Black got canned.

I know teams that play "Moneyball" consider managers to be an expendable middle manager who just pushes buttons during games, but damn its an important job. To have a guy in charge who has never done it before this year puts you at a disadvantage.

And no, the Dodgers don't play "Moneyball" but GM Andrew Friedman did when he ran the Tampa Bay Rays. I think he underrates the manager's influence on a team.

    6) Obscure major league record-- July 30, 1991, Dennis Martinez vs Mike Morgan at Dodger Stadium-- Major league record for most batters to make out in a game, before any batter reached base. 30 batters went down before there was a baserunner.

Tigers/Angels got to 27 consecutive batters retired last night, before CJ Cron singled to open the bottom of the fifth inning.

    5) WeTV, a purveyor of bad TV programs, is bringing "Millionaire Matchmaker" back to the airwaves. This woman sets up millionaires with dates-- she has had a ton of cosmetic surgery since this program was last on the air, I believe on Bravo Network. I actually felt bad for some of the guys she had the show on a few years ago.

Anyway, I'll say this: any guy who is a millionaire and needs a dating service is a jackass. Exhibit A: Donald J Trump. He has the worst hair in America, but he also has $10B so he has a raving beauty tagging along behind him. Thats just the way it is.

Like it or not, attractive women are drawn to money like locusts to a rotting corpse.

    4) There is an intersection in town of Banff, Alberta-- Moose and Squirrel Streets. Obviously whoever planned this neighborhood is a Rocky/Bullwinkle fan from the old cartoon. No word on whether there is a Boris Badenov Blvd.

    3) Pittsburgh Penguins haven't been out of the eastern time zone since January 18, when they played in St Louis- they're headed to San Jose for Games 3-4 of Stanley Cup finals- they were last in the Pacific Time Zone in December.

    2) Watching the Oklahoma City Thunder play, you forget they are the old Seattle SuperSonics, who the NBA stole from the city of Seattle after the 2007-08 season, because the city of Seattle wouldn't build (yet another) new arena for the Sonics. This was a horrendous injustice, since Seattle always supported their team very well.

    1) Warriors 96, Thunder 88-- Lot of the nitwits on social media who gave up on the Warriors last week can now eat their words. 10th time a team down 3-1 has won in a 7-game series, out of 233 tries. This series was good for the NBA, two great teams that people like to watch going at it for seven games. Solid entertainment.

MLB betting cheat sheet: A week to forget for the White Sox

The White Sox were swept over the weekend in Kansas City and have now fallen into third in the division, behind both the Royals and Indians.

      Cubs and Dodgers

There is no question as to what the biggest series is this week in baseball. The Cubs host the Dodgers for a four-game set and they get a big break in avoiding Clayton Kershaw altogether. Meanwhile, Jason Hammel, Jake Arrieta and Jon Lester are scheduled to start for the home team in the first three games.

Save for the Arrieta start, it looks like prices will be relatively cheap on the Cubbies here. Note that the Dodgers are just 9-21 as a road underdog of +125 or less the last three seasons including 0-5 so far in 2016. The Under was a perfect 7-0 in last season’s head to meetings, which saw the Dodgers come out ahead with a 4-3 advantage.

      A Week to Forget

In the last “Cheat Sheet,” I wrote about the potential for the White Sox recent slide to continue. Well, they were swept over the weekend in Kansas City and have now fallen into third in the division, behind both the Royals and Indians. Now they’ll lose the DH from the lineup this week w/ a trip to Queens to play the Mets.

This is Chicago’s first Interleague series of the year and they won’t have Chris Sale at their disposal.

It should be noted that the White Sox bullpen blew multiple-run leads in every game of the series vs. the Royals.

The Longest Win Streak in MLB Belongs To...

The Twins? Yes, winners of four straight, Minnesota comes off – by far – its most successful series of the season as they swept the Mariners up in Seattle.

Now they travel down the West Coast to face Oakland. Interestingly, when the Twins are off a win this year, they are 8-6. In all other games, they are 7-28!

The A’s have won two in a row themselves as they beat the Tigers both Saturday and Sunday. This will be a matchup of the teams with the worst two run differentials in the American League as Oakland is -50 while Minnesota is -74.

      Hitting Notes

      * While Ryan Braun has been out for the past two days (stiff neck), Jonathan Villar has been one leading the Milwaukee offense. In fact, the team’s leadoff man is now batting .373 since May 9th after going 9 for 19 (with seven runs scored) the last five games. Villar went 2 for 2 with three runs scored in Sunday’s win over Cincinnati.

      * Dustin Pedroia has come around lately for the Red Sox as he’s 10 of 24 at the plate his last six games with five doubles. He had four RBI’s over the weekend against Toronto.

      Pitching Notes

      * I talked about the White Sox earlier, but Chris Sale has now seen the team lose his last two starts after he’d opened the year a perfect 9-0. The first loss was definitely Sale’s fault, but on Sunday was one of the aforementioned bullpen meltdowns.

      * The team with arguably the hottest pitching staff in all of MLB right now is the Giants, whose rotation has posted a 1.53 ERA the last 17 games. A big key is that the team has been able to use the same five starters all year – Johnny Cueto, Madison Bumgarner, Jeff Samardzija, Jake Peavy and Matt Cain. But note they are only a combined 7-13 when either Peavy or Cain starts.

      Totals Trend

For the second time this month, the Royals are working on a streak of at least five consecutive games going Over the total. The current one has seen them go Over in six straight games.

      Tuesday's Weather Report

      * There is a chance of thunderstorms and a 25 percent chance of rain at Turner Field in Atlanta where the Braves will host the Giants. The total for this one is set at 8.0.

      * 50 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms possible throughout the game in Miami where the Pirates will be in town to take on the Marlins. The total for Tuesday night is 7.0.

      * A chance of thunderstorms, a 25 percent chance of rain, and a 10 mph wind blowing from right to left are all on tap for Wrigley Field in Chicago where the Dodgers will be taking on the Cubs. The total is currently OFF.

      * Miller Park in Milwaukee will see the same forecast as Chicago except for the fact that the wind will be blowing in from right field. The total is set at 9.0.

      * There is a 70 percent chance of rain in Kansas City for Tuesday night's game between the Royals and Rays. The total is currently set at 8.0.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday's Game of the Day: Dodgers at Cubs
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The last time Jake Arrieta faced the Los Angeles Dodgers, he threw his first career no-hitter on August 30th, 2015.

                  Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago Cubs (A: +185, H: -225, Total: 7.5)

The last time Jake Arrieta faced the Los Angeles Dodgers, he threw his first career no-hitter. The reigning National League Cy Young Award winner would have to duplicate that feat Tuesday to top what the Chicago Cubs’ pitchers did to the visiting Dodgers in the opener of the three-game series.

The Cubs need a deep outing from Arrieta after burning through the bullpen Monday. Starter Jason Hammel left after two innings with cramping in his right hamstring before four relievers combined for seven perfect innings to complete a one-hitter in Chicago’s 2-0 victory. The Cubs have won six straight since a season-high three-game losing streak and they’ve allowed a total of five runs over the past four games. Monday’s loss was just the second in eight games for the Dodgers, who have allowed two or fewer runs in six of their last seven contests.

                  TV:
8:05 p.m. ET, ESPN, SportsNet Los Angeles, ABC 7 (Chicago)

                  INJURY REPORT:

Dodgers - CF T. Thompson (Questionable Tuesday, back).

Cubs - CF D. Fowler (Questionable Tuesday, heel).

                  WEATHER REPORT:
There will be the possibility of thunderstorms in the Chicago area Tuesday evening which will also bring with it a 25 percent change of rain throughout the game. As usual at Wrigley Field you have to keep your eyes on the wind forecast - 10 mph wind is expected to be blowing from right field to left field. Temperature at gametime will be in the mid-70's and there will be significant humidity in the air (65 percent).

                  PITCHING MATCHUP:
Dodgers LH Scott Kazmir (4-3, 4.84 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Jake Arrieta (9-0, 1.72)

Kazmir has been wildly inconsistent with his command, as he struck out 12 in his last start after walking seven in his previous outing. The 32-year-old was excellent Wednesday against Cincinnati, allowing one run and four hits over six innings in addition to the 12 strikeouts to win his second straight decision. Kazmir is 1-0 with a 2.53 ERA in two starts against the Cubs, but he hasn’t faced them since 2010 with the Angels.

The Cubs have won Arrieta’s last 23 starts, tying the major-league record set by Atlanta’s Kris Medlen from 2010-12. Arrieta has won 20 straight decisions, including one Wednesday at St. Louis when he didn’t have his best stuff and allowed four runs and seven hits over five innings. Before his no-hitter at Los Angeles last season, Arrieta had struggled in two previous starts against the Dodgers, losing both in 2013.

                  TRENDS:

                      June Good Month/Bad Month Pitchers

After a sluggish start to season, Gerrit Cole's ERA is down to close to 2.50 and he can be expected to have another fine month.

You know the saying, “May flowers bring June showers.” For Major League Baseball pitchers hurling during the month of June, showers are hopefully not in their immediate plans. Instead, it’s the hope of all MLB starting pitchers to stay around long enough in their starts to avoid having to clean up and go home early.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of June. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in June, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each June over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s June list.

                      GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

                      Jake Arrieta, Chicago Cubs: 8-4 (6-2 A)

Only Clayton Kershaw has been in Arrieta's stratosphere since 2015. The right-hander is in the right organization which has allowed his abundant talents to flourish and this season opposing batters are hitting a mere .168 against him. His effortless delivery and mid-90's fastball causes a lot of swings and misses as does his breaking pitches.

                      Gerrit Cole, Pittsburgh Pirates: 10-2 (6-0 A)

Cole is now the ace of the Pittsburgh staff and expertly commands a two and four-seam fastball in the mid to upper 90's which he can sink or have riding action. After a sluggish start to season, his ERA is down to close to 2.50 and can be expected to have another fine month. Note: Cole’s numbers above reflect his career team mark during June.

                      * Bartolo Colon, New York Mets: 10-5 (7-0 H)

The 43-year old right-hander just keeps churning along on staff that is very talented and youthful. Colon knows how and where to spot his fastball, which he tosses 70 or more percent of the time and blends in a quick slider that has excellent depth. The fact is Colon understands his craft and wins.

                      John Lackey, Chicago Cubs: 11-5 (6-1 H)

Remember for years no pitcher in his right mind would want to pitch at Wrigley Field, now they line up for the chance. Being a talented young team helps and Lackey is the right fit, with a fastball he keeps low in the zone and sinker opposing hitters cannot elevate. Through two months, the batters Lackey has faced are at a lowly .209 batting average and his WHIP is sick 0.97.

                      Anibal Sanchez, Detroit Tigers: 9-4 (8-3 H)

The Detroit hurler has gotten off to a rugged start with ERA over 6 as June began. Sanchez's problems revolve around lack of pitch placement - not even having 2-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio and giving up more than a hit an inning. Of the 58 hits allowed, 11 have left the yard and if the Tigers are going to be contenders in the AL Central, Sanchez will have to throw like previous June's.

                      * Max Scherzer, Washington Nationals: 11-4 (6-2 A)

If you research Mad Max's numbers, many are at or below career norm, yet he begins this month with an ERA over 4.00. The problem is too many pitches right down the middle, which is why he on pace to give up 45 home runs (15 thru May). If Scherzer solves this, he will have a great rest of the year.

                      Chris Tillman, Baltimore Orioles: 11-3 (4-1 A)

After an off year in 2015, the Orioles righty has come back in a big way. When he's at his best like he has been this year, Tillman works his low 90's heater at the knees on both sides of the dish and his curve and changeup have sharp downward motion. He starts this month with hitters at .203 batting average versus his tosses.

Edinson Volquez, Kansas City Royals: 11-5 (7-1 A)

The Royals right-hander is doing what he does best, as in nine of his 11 starts for Kansas City he has induced double digit groundball outs. Volquez is still thought to be a power pitcher and gets numerous weak swings with tilted curve and deluxe changeup he will throw on any count.

                      * Jordan Zimmermann, Detroit Tigers: 12-5 (8-3 H)

After an unbelievable start, Zimmermann has drifted back to previous career numbers. He pulled a groin late last month, but is expected to make his start on June 3rd and continue from that point. His strengths include four pitches he trusts to throw for strikes and he has shown greater durability thus far in the AL.

                      BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

                      Shelby Miller, Arizona Diamondbacks: 6-12 (2-6 A)

After disastrous start with Arizona, having ERA over 7, maybe a trip to the DL with bad finger on his throwing hand will settle Miller down, who looks like he is trying to throw a no-hitter on every pitch and is getting hammered. The talent has always been in place, just not the execution as this record shows.
Note: Miller’s numbers above reflect his career team mark during June.

                      Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers: 4-10 (2-5 H)

No longer equipped with high 90's fastball, Verlander tends to give up runs in bunches these days. He can be sailing along for three to five innings and then give up three or four runs in single inning. Without the necessary secondary pitches, he's become easier to hit a third time through the lineup.

Jered Weaver, Los Angeles Angels: 5-10 (1-6 A)

It is sometimes tough to watch former aces who were among the best in the game, as their stuff is in decline and they are not close to what they used to be. This is the case of Weaver, whose fastball barely reaches 85 MPH, which makes his breaking ball and assortment of change-ups less effective. It is no accident at this juncture hitters are clocking him for .311 BA.
