Column: Braves go from model franchise to laughingstock
    May 7, 2016

ATLANTA (AP) A slew of pennants line the left-field facade at Turner Field, a sobering reminder of the team that used to play here.

They won't be putting up another one, not in this ballpark.

The Atlanta Braves are heading for a new stadium in 2017, and this season is already lost.

Really, the only real suspense is how long manager Fredi Gonzalez will last (probably not much longer) and how many games this dumpster of a team will lose by the time it's done.

It's going to be a lot, for sure.

Will it be a season of historically bad proportions? It very well could be.

With another loss Friday night to Arizona, the Braves slid to 7-21 for the season, a hideous .250 winning percentage. It's still early, but only three teams in baseball's modern era (1900-present) have finished at those depths.

Atlanta's plunge over the last two seasons has been especially jarring in light of this team's longtime place as one of baseball's flagship franchises, a team that won an unprecedented 14 straight division titles and captured its most recent NL East championship just three years ago.

Now, the Braves are a team that can't hit (last in the majors in runs, homers and average), can't pitch (a 4.81 team ERA) and can't field (only one team has committed more errors than Atlanta's 24).

More troubling is the absentee ownership, a callous front office that has left Gonzalez unfairly flapping in the breeze, and the impending move to the suburbs for a stadium that wasn't needed (Turner Field is only 20 years old) and will be paid for with a huge chunk of taxpayer dollars.

A team that once did everything right - at least until it got to the World Series - is stirring up all sorts of ill will that might take years to overcome, even if the massive rebuilding job pans out in the end.

In the meantime, this season is a lame duck in every sense of the word.

Outfielder Jeff Francoeur took note of that while remembering how he played on a 99-loss Phillies team a year ago.

''This year is a little different,'' he said before Friday's 7-2 loss. ''Last year, there were a lot of, lot of, lot of young guys. Here, it's kind of stuck in the middle.''

Much of the vitriol in Atlanta has rightly been directed at Liberty Media, the team's out-of-state and out-of-touch owners, who have sliced payroll and seem to view the Braves as a real estate entity more than a baseball team. Indeed, that's a big reason the team is heading to suburban Cobb County.

Liberty Media was able to find a sucker of a local government that was willing to fork over upward of $400 million to build a stadium and an adjacent shopping **** that the team's ownership is apparently more excited about than the product it's putting on the field.

In fact, when season tickets for 2017 go on sale next week, the slogan should be: ''Don't miss a chance to see all the exciting action at Braves, Bath & Beyond.''

''It's tough,'' said Gonzalez, who admitted to doing some ''soul searching'' during an off day Thursday, with speculation swirling about his future. ''But that's a challenge I'm going to take. We're not going to 90-10 the rest of the way. But we're going to play better.''

To be fair, the Braves are attempting to follow a path that worked in Kansas City and Houston, where scorched-earth overhauls resulted in short-term pain but gratifying results in the end. The Royals have played in the last two World Series and are the reigning champions. The Astros went from 111 losses in 2013 to a playoff spot last season (though they've taken a step back this year).

But to make it work, a team must make a LOT of right decisions on players who are often several years away from playing in the big leagues. The Braves deserve points for fleecing Arizona of former No. 1 pick Dansby Swanson and top pitching prospect Aaron Blair, but a couple of moves have been real puzzlers.

Andrelton Simmons, perhaps the best defensive shortstop in the game and only 26, was dealt to the Angels. The bigger head-scratcher came at last year's trade deadline, when the Braves traded a young left-handed starter (Alex Wood) and a top infield prospect (Jose Peraza) to the Dodgers for Cuban defector Hector Olivera.

Olivera is already 31, didn't show much late last season or early this year, and now his future is in limbo after an arrest last month on misdemeanor assault and battery charges. He's on leave while his court case plays out, and the Braves still owe him nearly $30 million for the next four years under the deal he signed with Los Angeles, even with the Dodgers picking up part of the hefty contract.

For those in the midst of this rebuilding job - even those who are supposed to be a big part of the future - are having trouble seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

''When you're the middle of a hurricane,'' said rookie outfielder Mallex Smith, ''you're in the middle of a hurricane.''

The rebuilding job is being led by 67-year-old John Hart, who came out of semi-retirement when former general manager Frank Wren was fired, and unproven, first-year GM John Coppolella, who is only 36 years old. So far, their plan for turning things seems to have as many misses as hits.

    But Coppolella isn't going anywhere.

The same can't be said for Gonzalez, who appears poised to take the fall for something that is largely beyond his control.

This isn't the Atlanta Braves we once knew.

    Not even close.

            Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- 167,227 people went to the Kentucky Derby; to see a 2:01.37 race.

-- Kershaw-Dickey in Toronto yesterday had to be a tough game to ump the plate.

-- May 30-31 Pirate-Marlin series was moved from Puerto Rico to Miami because of the Zika virus problem in central America.

-- There are 108 stitches on a major league baseball.

-- Aaron Hill hit three HRs, knocked in seven runs as Milwaukee came back from a 6-2 deficit to beat the Reds 13-7 in ten innings.

-- In NHL history, when a series has been 2-2, the Game 5 winner has gone on to win 190 of 243 (78.2%) series.

            **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Happy Mothers' Day......

            13) Whats wrong with the people who run the Memphis Grizzlies?

Three years ago, Memphis went 56-26, lost in Western Conference final; they showed their gratitude for the franchise's best-ever season by firing coach Lionel Hollins.

Yesterday, the Grizzlies fired coach Dave Joerger, after he led injury-ravaged Griz to a 42-40 season. You don't think thats impressive? Memphis used 28 different players this year, the most any NBA team has ever used in one season and yet they still made the playoffs. And they fire the coach. Wow.

            12) Bartolo Colon homered last night in San Diego, making him the oldest player in major league history (42) to hit his first home run. Colon took 31 seconds to round the bases; don't think he was showboating, he just doesn't move very fast.

            11) Sounds like major leagues are going to expand to 32 teams soon; Montreal, Mexico City mentioned as possible franchise homes. 32 teams would make it easier to schedule; not sure where all the new pitchers are going to come from, though.

            10) Saw something I've never seen in a major league game last night.

Cincinnati's speedster Billy Hamilton was on second, he tries to steal third. Milwaukee catcher Jonathan Lucroy throws to third, but the third baseman doesn't cover the base. I've seen guys not cover second base, but never third; it looked like Little League.

            9) Willie Mays turned 85 this week; one of the greatest players ever, he hit 660 home runs in his career and played a great centerfield.

            8) San Diego Padres have never had a no-hitter; Colin Rea got into the 7th inning with one Friday night, but had to settle for a 5-3 win. Yoenis Cespedes rolled a single thru the shift-vacated right side of the infield to get the Mets' first hit.

            7) In doubleheaders, the home plate umps do not work the other game. Feel bad for the home plate ump in Baltimore today, who did two games on the bases yesterday. I'm guessing the strike zone might be a little large this afternoon.

            6) Orioles' SS JJ Hardy's mom played on the LPGA tour; his dad was a professional tennis player.

            5) Portland 120, Golden State 108-- I'm guessing Steph Curry's leg feels a little bit better than it did 24 hours ago.

            4) Toronto 95, Miami 91-- Three games in this series were decided by a total of 14 points, with two of them going to overtime. Kyle Lowry had 33 for the Raptors after he went 10-35 from the floor in the first two series games.

            3) Week or so ago, we talked about how quickly Bruce Boudreau would have a new coaching job after Anaheim Ducks fired him despite his 409-192-80 career record. Boudreau also has a 1-7 career record in Game 7's of playoff series. Minnesota would probably be happy just to get to Game 7 of a playoff series.

            2) Quick baseball notes:
-- White Sox have a 5-game lead, Cubs have a 7.5-game lead in their divisions.
-- Giants are only 17-15, but they're in first place.
-- Arizona ownership has to be sick to be 14-18 after all the money they spent this winter. Luckily for them, they're only three games out of first place.
-- Angels' 4-2 loss to Tampa Bay was a real gut-wrencher; watching it happen, the loss just seemed more important than one game. Halos have already lost their three of their top pitchers to injury- a lost season looks like a real possibility.

            1) RIP Howard Garfinkel, 86, an iconic figure in basketball who co-founded the Five-Star Basketball Camp and helped thousands of basketball coaches/players further their careers. Mr Garfinkel was a beloved figure who dedicated his life to hoops. RIP, sir.

                      Red Sox, Yankees square off
                      May 7, 2016

BOSTON RED SOX at NEW YORK YANKEES

First pitch: Sunday, 8:00 p.m. ET Sportsbook.ag Line:

                      Game 1 - Yankees 3 Red Sox 2
                      Game 2 - Yankees 8 Red Sox 2

Steven Wright and the Red Sox take on Luis Severino and the rival Yankees in the series finale on Sunday night.

The Yankees, looking for revenge after getting swept by the rival Red Sox at Fenway Park in their first meeting of the season, will start RHP Luis Severino (0-4, 6.31, 16 SO, 5 BB, 4 HR in 25 2/3 IP) in the series finale.

After showing flashes of brilliance in his first major-league action last season—he went 5-3 with a 2.89 ERA in 11 starts—the 22-year-old has looked completely lost so far in 2016.

The Dominican had one of his better outings his last time out, allowing three earned runs on five hits in six innings of work against the Orioles on May 3. He’s allowed less than three earned runs just once through his first five starts.

On the mound for the Red Sox will be RHP Steven Wright (2-3, 1.67 ERA, 31 SO, 15 BB, 1 HR in 32 1/3 IP). Wright has been the antithesis of Severino, as he hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in any of his five starts.

In his last outing, against the White Sox on May 3, the right-hander surrendered two earned runs on three hits—he struck out six and walked four—in six innings of work.

Severino faced the Red Sox in his major-league debut back on August 5, 2015. He got the loss but was very impressive, giving up just one run on two hits in five innings and striking out seven.

He hasn’t faced John Farrell’s club since. DH David Ortiz went 1-for-2 on that August 5 day and homered off the rookie.

No other players on this year’s Red Sox team had hits off of Severino. SS Xander Bogaerts, CF Jackie Bradley Jr., LF Brock Holt and 1B Hanley Ramirez all went 0-for-2 against him, and none were even able to draw a walk.

Severino has been a different pitcher this year, though. He hasn’t been nearly as electric as he was in 2015, and Boston’s offense has looked far more dangerous than it did a year ago. As young Severino looks to get back on track, it’s a prime opportunity for this Red Sox team to take advantage and pounce on the inexperienced youngster.

The Yankees have struggled mightily to put runs on the board all season, and they’re facing a pitcher in Wright who has been rock solid. The 31-year-old faced the Yankees twice last season and beat them both times, allowing just three earned runs on 10 hits in 13 innings.

Wright faced the Yankees once in 2014, as well, and got the loss despite not allowing a run in five frames.

CF Jacoby Ellsbury has the most at-bats of any Yankee against Wright—with seven (1-for-7 with 3 SO). DH Carlos Beltran (2-for-4) and 1B Mark Teixeira (1-for-5) have homered off him.

LF Brett Gardner (0-for-4 with 3 BB), SS Didi Gregorius (1-for-6 with 2 SO) and 3B Chase Headley (0-for-4 with 1 BB and 1 SO) haven’t hit him well.

DH Alex Rodriguez (.194, 5 HR, 12 RBI, .275 OBP) was placed on the disabled list this week with a strained right hamstring. The 14-time All-Star only had 14 hits in 72 at-bats, but he led the club with five homers. Without the 40-year-old in the lineup, the power-starved Bombers are even weaker.

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                          JAKE'S JOYRIDE

Cubs ace Jake Arrieta has won 17 straight decisions, the longest streak by a starter in team history. The reigning NL Cy Young winner (6-0, 0.84 ERA) tries to help Chicago finish off a four-game sweep of Washington at Wrigley Field.

                          LATE NIGHT

Luis Severino dazzled for the Yankees after making his major league debut last August. But the 22-year-old righty is 0-4 with a 6.31 ERA in five starts this year. He makes another bid for his first win of the season when he faces Steven Wright and Boston in the Sunday night game.

                          BOUNCE BACK?

Pirates star Gerrit Cole gave up a career-worst six runs in his previous start, losing to the Cubs. He beat the Cardinals three times last year and hopes to do it again when he pitches against Michael Wacha at Busch Stadium.

                          CHECKUP TIME

The Rangers will find out more about A.J. Griffin, a day after he left his start in Detroit because of shoulder stiffness. The right-hander exited after throwing 53 pitches and giving up three runs and four hits in 2 2/3 innings.

                          BULLPEN BOOST

Right-hander reliever Casey Fien is expected to join the Dodgers for their series wrapup in Toronto. Los Angeles claimed him off waivers from Minnesota, where he was 1-0 with a 7.90 ERA in 14 games.

Almost 43, Colon becomes oldest to hit 1st major league HR
                            May 7, 2016

SAN DIEGO (AP) New York Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon became the oldest player to hit his first major league home run, connecting Saturday night less than three weeks before his 43rd birthday.

Colon launched a two-run shot in the second inning off San Diego's James Shields. The impressive drive hit the lower balcony on the Western Metal Supply Co. brick warehouse in the left-field corner at Petco Park to give the Mets a 4-0 lead.

Randy Johnson hit his only homer shortly after turning 40 in 2003. He was the oldest to finally hit a home run before Colon.

Colon watched the ball all the way, and didn't toss his bat until he was well over halfway to first base. The portly pitcher's trot around the bases took about 30 seconds.

When he returned to the dugout, his teammates were hiding in the tunnel before coming out to mob him.

Colon hasn't had to worry about his hitting. He won the 2005 AL Cy Young Award while with the Los Angeles Angels, and is a three-time All-Star.

Before his home run, he was a career .089 hitter in 225 at-bats, striking out 119 times. He usually swings hard and his helmet often falls off in the process, frequently drawing cheers and laughs from fans at home and on the road.

At 42 years, 349 days, Colon is the second-oldest Mets player to homer. Julio Franco homered on May 4, 2007, when he was 48 years, 254 days old.

Colon's major league debut was April 4, 1997, in a no-decision for Cleveland against the Angels. Franco was his teammate. The opposing manager was Terry Collins, now in his sixth season as the Mets manager.
