        • Wednesday's Diamond Notes
          May 25, 2016

Hottest team: Tigers (8-1 last nine)

Detroit began this month with a dreadful 2-11 mark and questions regarding Brad Ausmus’ status as manager. The Tigers have turned things around by winning all three series on their current homestand against the Twins, Rays, and Phillies, while going for the sweep of Philadelphia. Detroit received a dominating pitching performance from Justin Verlander in last night’s 3-1 victory, as Anibal Sanchez looks to turn things around this afternoon. Sanchez has allowed 17 earned runs in his last four outings, all Tigers’ losses, but all three of his victories this season have come during the day.

Coldest team: Twins (1-8 last nine)

If there is one team that can hit the reset button on this season, it’s the Twins. Minnesota owns the worst record in baseball at 11-34, which includes five losses to the defending champion Royals. Kansas City goes for the sweep of Minnesota this afternoon at Target Field, as the Twins have allowed 17 runs in the first two defeats. The Twins have dropped 11 of their last 12 games at home, while trying to avoid their fourth home sweep of the season. Tyler Duffey takes the mound for Minnesota in today’s matinee, as the Twins are winless in his two home starts this season after posting a perfect 4-0 record in his four outings at Target Field in 2015.

Hottest pitcher: Jake Arrieta, Cubs (8-0, 1.29 ERA)

Chris Sale suffered his first loss of the season in 10 starts last night as another Chicago ace tries to avoid a slip-up today. Arrieta continues to dominate following his Cy Young run last season as the Cubs’ right-hander has given up two earned runs or less in eight of nine starts. In five road starts, Arrieta has compiled a 5-0 record with an ERA of 0.97, but he lost twice in two starts at Busch Stadium last season.

Coldest pitcher: Scott Kazmir, Dodgers (3-3, 5.23 ERA)

Los Angeles looks to pull off the sweep against Cincinnati, as the Reds have lost 16 of 19 road games this season. Kazmir tries to get on track after dropping three of his four starts at Chavez Ravine this season, while allowing at least four runs in six of his past eight trips to the mound. The veteran southpaw has been taken deep seven times in his past four starts, while his teams (Astros and Dodgers) are 2-6 since last August when he is listed as a favorite of at least -140 (opened as -160 favorite tonight).

          Biggest UNDER run:
          Rangers (4-1 last five)

Texas has stepped up its pitching recently by allowing seven runs in its previous five contests, while giving up three runs in the first two games of its series against the Angels. Colby Lewis continues to be a work-horse on the mound for Texas by tossing seven innings in five consecutive starts, as the right-hander has allowed two earned runs or fewer in five of his past six trips to the mound. After going 1-4 against the Angels last season, Lewis yielded two earned runs in seven innings of a 4-2 victory over Los Angeles in late April as the game easily finished ‘under’ the total of 9 (tonight’s total is 9 ½).

Biggest OVER run: Pirates (9-3 last 12 at home)

Pittsburgh’s offense has torn up Arizona pitching this season by scoring 33 runs in four games (that includes one game scoring only one run). The Pirates lit up Shelby Miller in last night’s 12-1 drubbing in the series opener at PNC Park to cash the fifth ‘over’ in eight games on their current homestand. In four of their six victories on this homestand, the Bucs have plated at least eight runs, while rebounding in a big way after getting swept at home by the Cubs earlier this month. Jeff Locke takes the mound for Pittsburgh tonight, as the southpaw has eclipsed the ‘over’ in six of his last seven starts, including a 3-0 mark to the ‘over’ at home this season.

Matchup to watch: Orioles vs. Astros

Houston snapped a four-game losing streak in Tuesday’s 13-inning walk-off win over Baltimore thanks to a Carlos Correa RBI single. The Astros are mired in a hole inside the AL West following a playoff appearance last season, but Houston has won four of the last five home matchups with Baltimore. The Orioles have scored three runs or less in seven of their past 10 road contests, while posting a 5-5 record in this span. Tyler Wilson has pitched well for Baltimore away from Camden Yards as the O’s are 4-1 in his past five road starts since last season, including a 2-0 mark in 2016.

Betcha didn’t know: Indians’ right-hander Corey Kluber is facing the White Sox for the first time this season today. The former Cy Young winner was winless in three starts against Chicago in 2015, while allowing six earned runs each in two of those defeats. Following Cleveland’s victory at Boston in Kluber’s last outing, the Indians improved to 5-16 in the right-hander’s previous 21 road starts since the start of the 2015 season.

Biggest public favorite: Mariners (-180) vs. Athletics

Biggest public underdog: Orioles (+125) at Astros

Biggest line move: Diamondbacks (+115 to +105) at Pirates

          • LEADING OFF: Arrieta aims for 20; Bradley halfway to Joe D
            May 25, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

            GOING FOR 20

Jake Arrieta (8-0, 1.29 ERA) tries to win his 20th straight regular-season decision when the Cubs face the Cardinals. Chicago has won each of Arrieta's last 22 starts, in part because it is averaging eight runs per game over Arrieta's nine outings this season. Arrieta can tie Chris Sale for the major league lead in wins.

            HALFWAY THERE

Red Sox outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. tries to extend his hitting streak to 29 games when Boston hosts Colorado. Chad Bettis (4-2, 4.18 ERA) pitches for the Rockies. Bradley had two more hits Tuesday night and is halfway to Joe DiMaggio's major league record of 56 consecutive games set in 1941.

            SOMETHING'S GOT TO GIVE

Mets lefty Steven Matz (6-1, 2.81 ERA) brings a six-game winning streak into the series finale against Washington. He has never lost on the road (5-0) or faced the Nationals. Washington counters with Tanner Roark (3-3, 2.89), who is 5-0 with a 3.05 ERA in 11 career appearances against the Mets.

            GETTING CLOSE

Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez is expected to play a second rehab game with Double-A Trenton as he gets ready to return from a strained right hamstring. The 40-year-old Rodriguez went 2 for 4 with two singles and an RBI for the Thunder against New Hampshire on Tuesday night. New York, which has won six straight, is leaning toward activating him from the disabled list for a trip that starts Friday at Tampa Bay but could shorten Rodriguez's time in the minors if he feels good.

            STILL RAKING

Ichiro Suzuki looks to start a new streak after his recent hitting tear ended with an 0-for-5 showing Tuesday. Suzuki tied a Marlins record with 10 hits in the previous three games and became the first 42-year-old to go on such a streak since Cap Anson in 1894. Suzuki has 2,960 hits in his major league career and 4,238 between the majors and Japan - the latter total is 18 behind Pete Rose's career mark.

            TURNING TO JOSE

For all the fanfare around Chris Sale this season, Jose Quintana (5-3, 1.98 ERA) has pitched awfully well for the White Sox, too. Cleveland roughed up Sale for six runs in 3 1/3 innings Tuesday and tries to do the same against Quintana, who has lost his last two starts in part because of poor run support - Chicago scored just one run in each of those defeats.

            COAST TO COAST

The Marlins and Rays head to the Gulf side of Florida to continue their four-game series, with LHP Justin Nicolino (2-2, 4.30) going for Miami and RHP Matt Andriese (3-0, 2.11) trying to win his fourth consecutive start for Tampa Bay. Nicolino is winless in his last three outings, with a 5.63 ERA during that stretch.

            • Pirates pitcher Vogelsong dealing multiple facial fractures
              May 24, 2016

PITTSBURGH (AP) Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Ryan Vogelsong remained hospitalized with swelling and multiple facial fractures on Tuesday, a day after the veteran took a 92 mph fastball to the head from Colorado pitcher Jordan Lyles.

Pirates trainer Todd Tomczyk said Vogelsong was ''in good spirits'' but added that doctors would not be able to determine the extent of the damage around Vogelsong's left eye until the swelling subsided.

Vogelsong was batting with the bases loaded in the bottom of the second inning Monday when a Lyles pitch caught Vogelsong flush. He remained on the ground for several minutes, though Tomczyk said Vogelsong did not lose consciousness and does not have symptoms of a concussion.

''He remembers everything,'' Tomczyk said. ''He did not lose consciousness, which is important. He was scared, yes ... but he is a very positive guy.''

The 38-year-old Vogelsong did experience some vision loss in the immediate aftermath, but Tomczyk said Vogelsong's eye was ''somewhat open'' by Tuesday. Doctors believe there is no significant damage to the eye itself, though it could be a while before there is any official diagnosis, Tomczyk said. He expects the swelling to take significantly longer than the typical 3-5 days to go down.

Pittsburgh catcher Francisco Cervelli stopped by to check on Vogelsong on Tuesday and manager Clint Hurdle hopes to visit in the next couple days.

''He's in a better place (now) than he was (Monday),'' Hurdle said.

The Pirates placed Vogelsong on the 15-day disabled list and recalled reliever A.J. Schugel from Triple-A Indianapolis.

                  • Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Giants 4, Padres 3 (10)-- Giants are 9-0 against San Diego this season.

-- Vin Scully turned down a chance to call the All-Star Game in his final season as a broadcaster.

-- Jackie Bradley Jr's hitting streak is now at 29 games.

-- Indians 4, White Sox 3-- Chicago is now 4-11 in its last 15 games, leads Indians by only a half-game in AL Central.

-- Sharks 5, Blues 2-- St Louis made Stanley Cup finals in their first three years of existence (1967-70); they haven't been back since.

-- Cavaliers 116, Raptors 78-- Another uninteresting game. The average margin of victory in these five games has been 21.8 points.

                    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

                    13) Wednesday was the deadline for NBA prospects to drop out of the draft and go back to school-- at least 45 players have done that. Dillon Brooks, Tyler Dorsey both went back to school, making Oregon a national title contender next winter.

                    12) Purdue gets big man Caleb Swanigan back for next year: "I'm going back to school. I feel I'm only a 2nd round pick and I can do better than that. I love Purdue.'' Boilermakers still need better guard play, but Swanigan's return is important.

                    11) Clemson also got very good news that Jaron Blossonggame will return to school; Littlejohn Coliseum was re-done last winter, so Brad Brownell will be on the hot seat to make the NCAAs next year. When boosters kick in a lot of money to refurbish an arena, they expect results. With Blossingame, Clemson can make the NCAAs.

                    10) USC appears to be the big loser Wednesday; they lost two starters, their point guard and center, despite thought that neither one will get drafted. Trojans were going to be a top 15 team if both kids came back. Now they're out of the top 25. .

                    9) Similar bad news at Seton Hall, after Isaiah Whitehead stayed in the draft- had he stayed in school, he would've been a preseason All-American, and Kevin Willard is a much smarter coach. Whitehead may or may not get picked in the first round.

                    8) Los Angeles Rams will travel 32,072 miles this coming season, most of any team; even without their London trip, Rams would travel 5th-most miles in league.

                    7) There are six teams who will travel less than 10,000 miles this year, all from the two north divisions-- Lions-Packers-Bears-Ravens-Browns-Steelers.

                    6) Memphis Grizzlies offered their coaching job to Miami assistant David Fizdale, who has been an NBA assistant for 14 years. Grizzlies are tough team to work for; in last four years, they've fired a coach who went 56-26, then a coach who went 42-40 despite using 28 players, the most players an NBA team has ever had in one season.

                    5) Odubel Herrera, Yasiel Puig were both benched this week for not running balls out. Herrera returned to the lineup and homered Wednesday afternoon.

                    4) Rougned Odor punched an opponent in the face 11 days ago; when does he get suspended? Baseball does this so badly; by the time he gets suspended, we'll forget what he got suspended for. For that fight, the suspension should've been immediate.

                    3) Giancarlo Stanton is hitting .214 this year and is hurt again; this is his 7th year in the major leagues- he's played more than 123 games twice. I look at the guy and I see a WWE wrestler; he is too damn bulked-up to play baseball. Yes I'm bitter because he has been on my fantasy team since he was an 18-year old in the Florida State League, but how can a guy like this have only one season with 90+ RBI?

                    2) Imagine how bitter you would be if you were paying Stanton's salary? The meat of his big-money deal doesn't start for two more years-- starting in 2018, Stanton will make an average of $31M a year for 11 years, from age 28 to 38. Oy.

                    1) Matt Harvey is 3-7, 6.08 this season; he's allowed 73 hits in 53.1 IP. No bueno.

Hottest team: Red Sox (7-3 last 10)

Boston looks to become the first American League club to reach the 30-win mark with a victory tonight against Colorado. The Red Sox have outscored the Rockies, 18-6 in the first two games of this 2007 World Series rematch, improving to 11-1 in their last 12 opportunities as a home favorite. Boston is in the midst of a 12-4 stretch the past 16 games, while opening up a two-game advantage over Baltimore in the AL East after the Orioles lost the last two nights. The Red Sox begin a key seven-game road trip on Friday that extends to Toronto and Baltimore, as Boston owns a 5-5 record this season against those two division rivals.

Coldest team: White Sox (3-7 last 10)

The fast start for Chicago is quickly in the rear-view mirror as Cleveland has pulled into a tie for first place atop the AL Central. The White Sox dropped three of four to the surging Indians at home, while losing 11 of their past 15 games overall. In this stretch, the offense has dried up as the Sox have scored three runs or less in eight of the last nine contests, resulting in seven ‘unders.’ Oh by the way, Chicago travels to Kansas City to face the defending champions for a four-game series starting tonight as the Sox dropped two of three to the Royals at home last weekend.

Hottest pitcher: Jose Fernandez, Marlins (6-2, 3.02 ERA)

After allowing five earned runs in his first start of the season against the Tigers, Fernandez has bounced back as the Marlins are 7-1 in his last eight outings. The Miami ace owns a perfect 5-0 mark in his last five trips to the mound, including a pair of dominating performances against the division-leading Nationals. Fernandez has cashed the ‘under’ in four straight starts, while striking out 31 batters in his last three outings.

Coldest pitcher: Wily Peralta, Brewers (2-5, 6.99 ERA)

The good news for Peralta is he is facing a team in Atlanta that owns a dreadful 2-19 home record. The bad news is the right-hander is winless in his past three outings, while Milwaukee is 1-3 in his four starts away from Miller Park this season. Peralta has lasted six innings only once this season, while giving up at least four earned runs in six of nine starts. The Brewers are looking to pull off a sweep for the first time this season if they can knock off the Braves tonight, coming off a pair of one-run victories at Turner Field.

Biggest UNDER run: Astros (6-1 last seven)

For some reason, Houston has owned Baltimore at home over the last two seasons. The Astros picked up another one-run victory over the Orioles on Wednesday to improve to 5-1 in the past six home meetings. In fact, five of Houston’s last six games overall have been decided by one run, as seven combined runs or fewer have been scored in five of those contests. Houston’s pitching has stepped up at home by giving up three runs or less in nine of the last 11 games at Minute Maid Park, as the ‘under’ is 7-2-2 in this span.

Biggest OVER run: Yankees (8-3 last 11 at home)

New York’s six-game winning streak came to an end in Wednesday’s 8-4 defeat to Toronto, but the ‘over’ cashed for the eighth time in the past 11 contests in the Bronx. Following a slow start, the Yankees’ offense has picked it up in May by scoring at least four runs in 11 of the last 16 games, as the ‘over’ has hit 10 times in this stretch. CC Sabathia takes the mound for the Yankees this afternoon in the series finale against the Blue Jays, as New York has scored at least six runs in three of his last four starts.

Matchup to watch: Cardinals vs. Nationals

Washington pulled off a three-game sweep at St. Louis last month, while winning the final two games by outscoring the Cardinals, 12-2. In one of those blowout victories, Nationals’ right-hander Joe Ross scattered six hits and allowed one earned run in six innings of a 6-1 triumph, but that was the last time Ross won a game as he is 0-4 in his last four outings. Mike Leake has overcame a slow start for St. Louis by winning three straight starts, including a pair of road starts at Los Angeles against the Dodgers and Angels. The Cardinals have played well on the highway recently by posting a 9-4 record in their last 13 games away from Busch Stadium.

                              Betcha didn’t know:

The Diamondbacks look to avoid the sweep in a getaway game against the Pirates at PNC Park. Since the start of last season, Arizona owns a putrid 2-12 record in its last 14 tries when attempting to avoid the broom, including an 0-3 mark this season. However, Patrick Corbin takes the mound for Arizona, as the southpaw has pitched well on the road with a 4-1 team record in his five starts away from Chase Field.

Biggest public favorite: Pirates (-185) vs. Diamondbacks

Biggest public underdog: Orioles (+100) at Astros

Biggest line move: Marlins (-102 to -108) at Rays

                              • LEADING OFF: Harper slumping, Fernandez rolling in NL East
                                May 26, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                                PITCHED AROUND

Struggling Bryce Harper hopes to get some pitches to hit when the Nationals host the Cardinals for a four-game set. Harper sat Wednesday before grounding out as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning in a 2-0 loss to the Mets. The NL MVP has had a tough month, with opponents consistently pitching around him. He's hitting .197 with two homers in May but also has a .458 on-base percentage thanks to 31 walks.

                                FERNANDEZ ROLLING

RHP Jose Fernandez (6-2, 3.02 ERA) pitches for the Marlins as they close a four-game series with Florida-rival Tampa Bay. Fernandez has 31 strikeouts over his last three starts (20 innings) and has won his past five decisions. The Rays send out LHP Drew Smyly (2-5, 3.54).

                                SHADES OF GRAY

Rockies RHP Jon Gray (1-2, 6.75) tries to get back on track against the Red Sox. The hard-throwing youngster was pitching well until allowing nine runs in 3 1/3 innings during a 13-7 loss to the Cardinals in his last outing. Clay Buchholz (2-4, 5.92) will pitch for Boston, which has scored eight or more runs 10 times in its last 14 home games.

                                CC'S

Yankees LHP CC Sabathia (3-2, 3.41) looks to keep up his resurgence as a solid starter for New York. He faces the Blue Jays having allowed just one run over 13 innings during his past two starts, both victories. He hasn't allowed a home run since April 16 and has held opponents to three or fewer runs in each of his six starts. LHP J.A. Happ (5-2, 3.43) will take the mound for Toronto.
