  • Three MLB Plays For Thursday

Just 3-5 in Basses here at Bettors Chat. Let's turn it around

    LA Dodgers vs Atlanta Braves

A Look At The Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers are really playing mediocre ball right now and were surprised in game one of this series as they fell 8-1 to a Braves team that had yet to win a game at home this year. Losing is one thing, but they were crushed in the game and the biggest culprit in the game may have been their defense that had three errors in the game. Alex Wood did allow six runs in the game, but just three were earned. The offense sputtered as well as all they could muster was just five hits and the one run off of Williams Perez and four relievers. Two of the hits came from Adrian Gonzalez, who is now hitting .333 on the year, while Puig had a hit and continues to lead the team in hitting at .347. On offense overall the Dodgers check in at 8th in the league in scoring putting up 4.71 rpg, while also ranking 7th in hitting at .259, but they are just 26th in homers with eight.

On the mound they have been solid as they come in at 8th in ERA at 3.19, while also ranking 4th in WHIP at 1.05 and 3rd in quality starts with 10. Dodger starters have an ERA of 2.88, while their pen has an ERA of 3.86. Taking the hill for the Dodgers will be Clayton Kershaw, who comes in at 2-0 with a slim 1.64 ERA through three starts so far this year. Last year he was 16-7 with a 2.13 ERA in 33 starts, including 5-4 with a 2.60 ERA in 16 road starts. He is 2-0 with a 1.79 ERA in six career starts vs the Braves, including going 0-0 with a 2.57 ERA in one starts here at Turner Field. Kershaw has been an excellent starter in day games in his career, going 33-10 with a 2.52 ERA in 71 day starts.

A Look At The Atlanta Braves

The Braves got off to a horrible start to their year as they lost their 1st nine games of the season, but following their 8-1 win in game one of this series they have now won their last four games in a row. A big part of that is their offensive explosion as they have scored at least six runs in each of the four games, after they had put up more than four runs just one in their 1st nine games. Having a big game for the Braves in the win over the Dodgers was Tyler Flowers, who was 4-for-4 with three RBIs, while Jeff Francoeur was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Freddie Freeman had one hit in the game and scored two runs, but still his slow start continues as he is hitting just .175, with one homer and four RBIs. They need his bat to wake up. Overall the Braves are 21st in scoring at 3.85 rpg, while also ranking 28th in hitting at .215 and last in homers with just three.

The pitching is worse than that as they are 28th in ERA at 5.01 and 25th in WHIP at 1.43. Brave starters this year have posted an ERA of 5.22, while their pen has an ERA of 4.67. Matt Wisler gets the call for the Braves in this one and he is 0-1 with a 4.97 ERA in two starts this year. He has also pitched an inning out of the pen and picked up a save in that game as he retired the side in order. Last year he was 8-8 with a 4.71 ERA in 20 games (19 starts) for the Braves, including going 5-3 with a 2.93 ERA in nine starts here at Turner Field. His lone start vs the Dodgers came last year and he got the win, beating them 7-5, while allowing four ERs on eight hits in six innings of work. Wisler is 2-2 with a 4.31 ERA in seven day games (five starts) in his career.

    Pick: LA Dodgers -1.5

The Braves surprised the Dodgers in game one of this series, but I don’t expect that to happen here vs Clayton Kershaw, who has really looked sharp at the start of the year and the Braves have troubles vs lefties. Atlanta is just 5-12 their last 17 vs southpaws and they have hit just .178 off of them this year so far. The Dodgers are clearly the better team here and behind Kershaw they should win this one rather easily.
