    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Odds on the first round of the NHL playoffs.........

    -- Washington -$280 vs Philadelphia +$230

    -- Florida -$155 vs NY Islanders +$135

    -- Pittsburgh -$150 vs NY Rangers +$130

    -- Tampa Bay -$150 vs Detroit +$130

    -- Dallas Stars -$200 vs Minnesota +$165

    -- Anaheim -$165 vs Nashville +$145

-- Los Angeles -$150 vs San Jose +$130

    -- St Louis -$110 vs Chicago -$110

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

    13) I met Pete Rose yesterday; got an autographed ball for a buddy of mine. Pete signs autographs at Mandalay Bay for a few hours most afternoons; $75 for a picture, $99 for a ball- they have a framed bat for a bargain, $1,500. You get your picture taken with him and he'll talk a little bit with you. Seems like a good guy.

    12) I told him that if his Hall of Fame eligibility was put up for a public vote, that he would win handily. His reply: "They have their own set of rules", referring to MLB. He makes $1M+ a year signing his name, lives here in Vegas, he is doing pretty well.

    11) Lot of music and movie memorabilia in that store where he signs autographs; you can get a Dave Matthews autographed guitar for $4,500 or an autographed Army helmet from Full Metal Jacket for $1,495. An interesting place.

    10) Since 2013, St Louis is 40-18 against the Brewers, thw most lopsided series in major league baseball during that time.

    9) Quote of the Day, part 2: "What the world needs are less mental hospitals and more minor league baseball." Bill Murray, 1982

Went to the Sacramento-Las Vegas minor league baseball game last night, AAA teams of the Giants-Mets, played before a sparse crowd on a pleasant night. Top prospect Brandon Nimmo plays CF for the Mets' AAA team- he showed great range in center..

    8) Marlins 10, Mets 3-- New York lost three of four at home- it is way too early to go nuts about this, but their pitching has been spotty, deGrom is hurt, Granderson is one for 24, Miami treated Matz like a pinata in this game.

    7) I watched afternoon baseball games at Mandalay Bay for a couple hours, but the gorgeous big screens at the Westgate have spoiled me. The pizza at Slice in the shopping area at Mandalay Bay was first class, however.

    6) At one point in March, Baltimore was something like 0-10-2 in spring training games and their TV guys were trying hard not to sound concerned. Now the Orioles are 6-0 and we are reminded that Buck Showalter is a good as any manager without the last name of Bochy.

    5) Minnesota is 0-7 and it was 42 degrees at their home opener, played outdoors because they weren't smart enough to put a retractable dome on their ballpark, the way the Brewers did in Milwaukee.

    4) Atlanta is 0-6 but they've openly tanked this season as they acquire prospects who will make the majors when the Braves start playing in their new stadium in suburban Cobb County next season. 15 of their top 30 prospects have been acquired by trade, and they traded some talented older players to get those prospects.

    3) Josh Jackson committed to Kansas Monday, jumping the Jayhawks from #41 in the 2016 recruiting rankings into the top 10. He is a 6-7 shooting guard.

    2) Vanderbilt-Marquette and Ohio State-Navy will be a Veterans' Day twinbill in Annapolis next fall. That will be Bryce Drew's first game as Vandy's coach.

    1) Kings 105, Suns 101-- Seth Curry had 20 points, 15 assists-- he has a players' option to stay in Sacramento next season, or he can become a free agent. I'm thinking someone will overpay for his services, just based on bloodlines.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: Marlins at Mets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Noah Syndergaard turned in a dominant performance in his season debut at Kansas City, limiting the Royals to three hits while striking out nine over six scoreless innings.

Florida Marlins at New York Mets (-150, 6)

Two of the top young pitchers in the game will square off when the New York Mets host the Miami Marlins on Tuesday in the middle contest of their three-game set. Miami delivered an early knockout punch in the series opener, pushing across seven runs in the second inning en route to handing the Mets their third straight loss with a 10-3 drubbing.

New York could use a quality start from towering right-hander Noah Syndergaard after lefty Steven Matz lasted only 1 2/3 innings in Monday's mauling, taxing an already short-handed pitching staff. The 23-year-old Syndergaard was as reliable as could be in his rookie season, working at least six innings in all 12 regular-season starts at home. Jose Fernandez, who is a month older than Syndergaard and already has come back from Tommy John surgery, made his major-league debut at Citi Field in April 2013 and provided a glimpse of what was to come with five innings of one-run, eight-strikeout ball.

                TV:
7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), SNY (New York)

                LINE HISTORY:
The Mets opened at -135 but the public quickly bet the line up to -150. The total opened at a minuscule 6 and has been steady thus far at most books.

                INJURY REPORT:

Marlins - RP R. Lazo (Out Tuesday, shoulder), RP M. Dunn (Out Tuesday, arm), RP C. Capps (Out For Season, elbow).

Mets - RP J. Edgin (Out Tuesday, elbow).

                WEATHER REPORT:
After some pregame showers clear the area we can expect perfect baseball conditions for the remainder of the evening. Clear skies, relatively mild temperatures, and a breeze blowing in from center field (10 mph).

                PITCHING MATCHUP:
Marlins RH Jose Fernandez (0-1, 7.94 ERA) vs. Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (1-0, 0.00)

Fernandez saw his major league-record run come to a halt in his season debut as his 17-game winning streak at home - the longest such stretch to start a career in history - was snapped by Detroit. It was hardly a shoddy outing for the 23-year-old Cuban, who despite allowing five runs and five hits also flashed overpowering stuff with 13 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. Fernandez never has lost to New York in four starts, logging a 1-0 record and 1.64 ERA.

Syndergaard turned in a dominant performance in his season debut at Kansas City, limiting the reigning World Series champion to three hits while striking out nine over six scoreless innings. It was a positive early omen for the native of Texas, who struggled on the road last season with a 2-5 mark and 4.23 ERA. Conversely, Syndergaard was masterful in the friendly confines of Citi Field, posting a 7-2 record, 2.46 ERA and .196 batting average against.

                TRENDS:

                * Marlins are 1-5 in Fernandez' last 6 road starts.
                * Mets are 2-10 in their last 12 vs. National League East.
                * Mets are 9-2 in Syndergaards last 11 home starts.
                * Over is 5-1 in Fernandez' last 6 road starts.
                * Over is 6-1 in Mets last 7 home games vs. a right-handed starter.
                * Over is 6-0 in Syndergaards last 6 starts vs. a team with a losing record.

                CONSENSUS:
The Mets are getting the majority of the public action at 67 percent but that number has certainly dropped since the early line move from -135 to -150. Many bettors aren't trusting a low total of six and 57 percent are picking the over.

MLB betting cheat sheet: An "O's" so good start to the season

The Orioles have started the season a perfect 6-0 and were listed as underdogs in half of those games.

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the mid week major-league schedule:

                  O's So Good

The Orioles shocked the Red Sox on Monday, winning Game 1 of this series in Boston as a +180 underdog. They head into Game 2 still undefeated at 6-0, and they've been an underdog in half of those wins and just a short favorite in the other half. The bookmakers don't appear to be overly impressed, as Boston is again a heavy favorite in Game 2 at Fenway. The price seems particularly strange when you consider that Boston has lost 15 of it's last 21 at home when Clay Buchholz starts.

                  Never Ending Story

Last week I noted: "Rookie shortstop Trevor Story is the first player in history to hit home runs in each of his first three major league games. Since he plays for the Rockies, some might assume that Coors Field has aided his prolific start. In fact the Rockies started the season on the road at Arizona, and all four of his home runs so far came at Chase Field. The Rockies open a home series versus the Padres Friday, and he should have a chance to continue to produce against a struggling San Diego pitching staff." He has since added three more during a home series versus San Diego.

                  Just Win Baby

Baseball fans in Minnesota are still waiting for their Twins to win a game this season, but they might not have to wait too much longer with the Twins playing their next seven games at home. Atlanta fans could be waiting a while, as the Braves will be on the road until next week, playing three more games in Washington before a weekend series in Miami. Expect Atlanta to be a big underdog in all six of those games.

                  Hitting notes

*Daniel Murphy is on a tear with his new team, leading the Nationals batting .471 with a pair of home runs and seven RBIs in just five games. He should be able to continue producing this week, as he's facing a weak Atlanta pitching staff. He'll face Jhoulys Chacin Tuesday, and he's hitting .333 lifetime versus the right-hander.

*The Miami Marlins are batting a major league best .299 so far, but still have just two wins in five games. Both Dee Gordon and Martin Prado are hitting .400 so far, but they are in for a tough test Tuesday going up against Noah Syndergaard at Citi Field.

                  Pitching notes

*Jose Fernandez had won 17 straight starts in Miami, but his perfect career home record came to an end this week in a loss to Detroit. He gave up five runs on five hits, but also struck out 13 batters over 5 2/3 innings. His next start will come on the road tonight at New York opposite Noah Syndergaard.

*Felix Hernandez is still looking for his first win of the season, despite a minuscule 0.69 ERA with 16 strikeouts in 13 innings in his first two starts. His next start comes on the road at Yankee Stadium, opposite C.C. Sabathia on Saturday.

                  Totals trend

The Colorado Rockies went over in two of three games in a home series versus San Diego, and they've gone over the number in four of six games overall. Coors Field is well known as the most hitter friendly park in the majors, and even though the bookmakers make adjustments with higher totals, the Rockies still seem to trend over at home consistently. They play Game 1 of a home series versus the Giants tonight, and eight of the last 11 in this series have gone over. The over is 32-15-4 in Rockies last 51 during game 1 of a series.

                  Injury notes

*Tigers catcher James McCann left Monday's game with a sprained ankle, and he's landed on the 15 day DL. This forced Detroit to call up veteran catcher Bobby Wilson from Triple-A Toledo.

*Miami's Wei-Yin Chen is dealing with an elbow injury that could cause him to miss his next scheduled start.

Tuesday's ump stat of the day

The under is 7-1-1 in Alfonso Marquez's last nine games when he is calling balls and strikes when the Oakland Athletics are involved in the game. The total for tonight's Angels-A's game is set at 7.5.

                  Tuesday's weather report

                  * There will be a moderate hitters wind in Detroit this afternoon, when the Tigers host the Pirates. The wind will be gusting at 8-10 miles per hour out to center field. O/U is set at 8.5.

                  * The weather should clear up at National's Park for first pitch when Washington hosts Atlanta. There will be a moderate hitters wind gusting in from left field at 8-10 miles per hour. O/U is set at 7.5.

                  * There is a similar forecast in Philadelphia when the Phillies host the Padres, with early showers clearing up as first pitch approaches and a 10-12 mile per hour hitters wind gusting in from left. The total is set at 7.5.

                  * It could be a messy day in Seattle when the Mariners host the Rangers. There is a 67 percent chance of rain and a strong 15-17 mile per hour hitters wind gusting out to center field. O/U is set at 7.5.
