    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Some stuff about the upcoming NFL season.........

-- You can bet the Super Bowl now; NFC is -2, 48.5.

-- 49ers are 50-1 just to win the NFC; Browns are 100-1 to win the AFC.

-- Denver is 12-1 to win Super Bowl; they don't even know who their QB will be.

-- I can't see wagering on the NFL until the schedule comes out- that is going to happen April 21. Then the fun starts.

-- Packers/Steelers are second betting choice in NFC, AFC respectively.

-- Minnesota has been bet down from 20-1 to 16-1 to win the Super Bowl.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend..........

    13) A's 2, Mariners 1 (10)-- We've talked some baseball strategy this week; Seattle's rookie manager Scott Servais took Felix Hernandez out after seven innings, 99 pitches Sunday with a 1-0 lead. Hernandez is a valued commodity- they get a few thousand more fans when he pitches at home, so his health is paramount, but so is winning, and when Marcus Semien homered to tie the game 1-1, eyes had to roll in Seattle.

    12) I'm not leaving this subject without saying how freakin' awesome it is that the A's swept their first road series, with two dramatic wins. Tremendous!!!!

    11) Texas Rangers brought up their #1 prospect Nomar Mazara and he had three hits in his debut, including a home run-- kids come up thru the ranks faster now than they used to and that makes fantasy baseball keeper leagues more fun.

    10) The MLB app for IPhone is excellent; for $20 for the whole year, you can listen to any radio broadcast of any game. Listened to the great Bob Uecker from Milwaukee some this weekend. Best $20 I've spent this year.

    9) A's radio guy Ken Korach once gave up a home run to NCIS star Mark Harmon, when the two were Little League rivals in the Los Angeles area. Harmon played QB at UCLA later on, his dad won the Heisman Trophy.

    8) Phillies have a choice after this season; pay Ryan Howard $27M to be a slug at 1B again next season, or pay him $10M to go away. When he gets his $10M, I hope he buys his agent a nice parting gift.

    7) Memo to ESPN: How about scheduling Sunday night TV games in warm weather cities or in domes in April? MLB had a fun first week and with a chance to promote their product on national TV with little opposition Sunday night, their game in Detroit got rained out. No bueno.

    6) Jason deGrom got scratched from his Wednesday start with a lat injury; he isn't on the DL yet, but until this issue is resolved, the Mets are nervous.

    5) Iona's basketball team added transfers Sam Cassell Jr (UConn) and Jon Severe (Fordham) this weekend, as they restock for another run at the '17 MAAC ttile.

    4) Kids who are talented basketball players make some goofy decisions: Duke needed another guard this past season, so Derryck Thornton Jr reclassified (moved up a year) and played for Duke, when he could've still been in high school.

Thornton didn't play that well, Duke recruited over him, so now the kid is transferring and will have to sit out this coming season at his new school, when he could've stayed in high school this past year and had a normal senior year. Who advises these kids?

    3) 25 college football teams had their spring games this weekend; I'm guessing the Paul Finebaum show today will have a lot of college football discussion, even in April.

    2) Cubs are 21-2 in Jake Arrieta's last 23 starts.

    1) Cubs' home opener is a night game? Is that a first?

Game of the Day: Royals at Astros
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston opens play at Minute Maid Park after a disappointing six-game road trip to start the season saw it lose two of three to both the New York Yankees and Milwaukee.

Kansas City Royals at Houston Astros (-135, 9)

The reigning world champion Kansas City Royals take to the road for the first time this season when they begin a four-game set against the Houston Astros on Monday in a rematch of the 2015 American League Division Series. Kansas City began the defense of its championship with a successful five-game homestand that concluded with a three-game sweep against Minnesota - including a 10-inning victory on Sunday in which it rallied for two runs in the ninth before pinch-runner Terrance Gore scored on a wild pitch in the 10th.

Mike Moustakas hopes to continue to swing a hot bat on the road as he went 5-for-12 with two home runs versus the Twins after going hitless in his first eight at-bats of the season. Houston opens play at Minute Maid Park after a disappointing six-game road trip to start the season saw it lose two of three to both the New York Yankees and Milwaukee. Tyler White has kicked off his major-league career in superb fashion, going 10-for-18 with three homers and nine RBIs in his first five games before an 0-for-3 outing against the Brewers on Sunday. Collin McHugh looks to return to the form that made him a 19-game winner for Houston last season as he squares off against Chris Young, who has reached double digits in victories each of the last two years.

      TV:
8:10 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, ROOT (Houston)

      LINE HISTORY:
The Houston Astros opened as -135 favorites against the defending World Series champions. The total opened at 9.

      INJURY REPORT:

Royals - RF J. Dyson (Out Monday, oblique), RP T. Collins (Out For Season, elbow).

Astros - DH E. Gattis (Out Monday, hernia), C M. Stassi (Out Monday, wrist).

      WEATHER REPORT:
With a chance of thunderstorms in the Houston area on Monday evening, it is likely that the roof of Minute Maid Park will be closed.

      PITCHING MATCHUP:
Royals RH Chris Young (0-1, 3.60 ERA) vs. Astros RH Collin McHugh (0-1, 135.00)

Young accounted for Kansas City's lone loss thus far as he was outdueled by Mets powerhouse Noah Syndergaard on Tuesday. The 36-year-old native of Dallas worked five innings against his former team, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out four. Despite posting a 4.67 ERA in six career starts against Houston, Young is 4-1 while limiting the Astros to a .208 batting average.

McHugh has a season debut to forget on Wednesday as he was battered for six runs - five earned - by the New York Yankees. The 28-year-old from Illinois allowed three hits and walked two while retiring just one batter in the shortest start of his career. McHugh was outstanding in his only career regular-season outing against the Royals, scattering five hits over seven scoreless innings while striking out nine in a victory at Kansas City on May 27, 2014.

      TRENDS:

      * Royals are 4-0 in Young's last 4 road starts.
      * Astros are 5-1 in their last 6 home games following a road trip of 7 or more days.
      * Astros are 9-0 in McHughs last 9 home starts vs. a team with a winning record.
      * Under is 7-0 in Royals last 7 during game 1 of a series.
      * Under is 6-0-1 in Astros last 7 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
      * Royals are 1-4 in the last 5 meetings in Houston.

      CONSENSUS:
Initial betting action was tilted slightly towards the favorite Astros (54 percent).

                      MLB Power Rankings: Week 2

The Chicago Cubs started the season as the top team on the Power Rankings and certainly did nothing to relinquish their number one spot after starting the season 6-1 on the road.

Rank Last Week Change Team W-L (ATS) Power Rating Team

                      1 1 same 5-1
                      (5-1-0) -131Chi. Cubs
The Cubs certainly looked like the best team in baseball after going 6-1 in the opening week. Chicago out-scored their opposition by 28 runs (40-12) in their six wins. But the Cubs suffered a major loss as Kyle Schwarber is out for the season with a knee injury.

                      2 3 up 1 5-2
                      (4-3-0) -126 San Francisco
San Francisco had an excellent first week, going 5-2 with their two losses both coming by a single run. The Giants’ offense scored 3 runs or less in four games, and they scored 9 runs or more in their other three games.

                      3 2 down 1 3-4
                      (4-3-0) -124 Toronto
They went just 3-4 in their first seven games with two of those losses coming at home. Toronto has been average at the plate and on the mound, and they failed to live up to their lofty expectations in the first week.

                      (2-2-0) -120 Washington
Washington’s strong starting pitching was on full display in the opening week. The Nationals went 3-1 after the pitching staff held their opponents to 3 runs or less in three of their four games.

                      5 4 down 1 2-3
                      (2-3-0) -119 NY Mets
The defending National League champions did not have a great first week. The Mets went just 2-3 after their offense was underwhelming to say the least. New York scored 3 runs or less in four of their five games.

                      (4-3-0) -117 LA Dodgers
After opening the season at 3-0, the Dodgers tailed off an only won one of their last four games. However, all seven of their games so far this season have come away from home.

                      (2-4-0) -115 Houston
The Astros had a terrible first week of the season. Houston went just 2-4 in their six games as their pitching got crushed. The Astros gave up 33 total runs in their four losses.

                      8 8 same 3-2
                      (4-1-0) -114 Boston
A strong offense that ranked 4th overall in total runs scored last year continued where they left off. The Red Sox have scored 28 total runs in their five games while starting the season with a 3-2 record.

                      9 9 same 4-1
                      (2-3-0) -113 Kansas City
Kansas City’s winning ways have carried over to this season. The Royals completed their first week of the season with a 4-1 record. Kansas City’s pitching has been tremendous, allowing 3 runs or less in all five games.

                      (3-3-0) -111 Pittsburgh
The Pirates began the season with 4 consecutive wins, but they dropped both games over the weekend. Pittsburgh’s offense scored 21 runs in their four wins, but they scored just 2 total runs in their two losses.

                      11 11 same 3-1
                      (2-2-0) -110 Detroit
Detroit had a rain shortened week as they only played four games. The Tigers went 3-1 in those games with their offense leading the way while scoring 23 total runs in their four games.

                      12 12 same 3-3
                      (3-3-0) -108 St. Louis
They opened the season with three straight losses, but the Cardinals swept the Braves in Atlanta to even their record at 3-3. St. Louis’ offense has scored 38 total runs in their six games which all came on the road.

                      13 14 up 1 2-2
                      (1-3-0) -105 Cleveland
There’s high expectations for Cleveland this season, but the Indians have started their season off slow. Cleveland went 2-2 in just four games as their pitching was disappointing while allowing 20 total runs, including 6 runs or more in three of four games.

                      14 13 down 1 3-4
                      (3-4-0) -104 Texas
The Rangers went just 3-4 in their first week of the season. Texas looks like a team that will need to score a lot of runs to win games as their pitching got shelled for 32 runs by a pair of mediocre offenses.

                      15 15 same 3-2
                      (3-2-0) -103 NY Yankees
They scored the second most runs in all of baseball last season, and the Yankees appear to be headed down the same path this year. New York scored 35 totals runs while going 3-2 in their first five games.

                      16 16 same 2-5
                      (2-5-0) 100 Arizona
Arizona went 2-5 in their first seven games of the season, but the Diamondbacks played a 4-game series with the Cubs. Arizona’s pitching should fare better as they face lesser lineups throughout the season.

                      17 17 same 2-4
                      (3-3-0) 103 Seattle
They have not made the postseason since 2001 which is the longest active drought in the league, and they began this year with a 2-4 record. Offense continues to be an issue for the Mariners as they scored 2 runs or less in four of their six games.

                      18 18 same 4-2
                      (3-3-0) 104 Chi. White Sox
The White Sox went 4-2 over the first week of the season, but they’ve played a soft early schedule. Chicago’s pitching was solid as they allowed 4 runs or less in five of their six games.

                      19 21 up 2 5-0
                      (4-1-0) 106 Baltimore
Baltimore went a perfect 5-0 in the first week of the season, but they played two teams that aren’t expected to be much this season. The Orioles were workmanlike in all five of their wins, so their wins may be more than just a result of poor opponents.

                      20 19 down 1 2-4
                      (1-5-0) 107 Tampa Bay
Tampa Bay struggled mightily in the first week of the season. The Rays went just 2-4 in their six games, and pitching was a major issue. Tampa Bay gave up 5 runs or more in four of their six games.

                      21 20 down 1 2-4
                      (1-5-0) 108 LA Angels
The Angels were extremely fortunate to go 85-77 last year as they had an incredible 35-17 record in one-run games. Their expected regression has already begun as they went just 2-4 last week with their offense scoring just 12 total runs in those six games.

                      22 23 up 1 1-3
                      (2-2-0) 114 Miami
Miami only played four games last week; the Marlins went just 1-3. However, they played two tough opponents who possess terrific offensive clubs. Miami has potential to be a sneaky good team this season, so don’t put too much stock into their first week.

                      23 22 down 1 0-6
                      (3-3-0) 115 Minnesota
Their offense ranked last in on-base percentage (.305) and second to last in team batting average (.247) last year in the American League. Things look to be the same for the 0-6 Twins as they’ve scored 3 runs or less in every game so far this season.

                      24 24 same 4-3
                      (5-2-0) 118 Oakland
The A’s were just 19-35 in one-run games last year, but they are 3-2 so far in those games this season. Overall, Oakland went 4-3 in their seven games last week behind solid pitching that allowed 2 runs or less in four of six games.

                      25 25 same 3-3
                      (4-2-0) 121 Milwaukee
Milwaukee went 3-3 in their first six games of the season. All of those games came at home, and the Brewers’ pitching is of concern. They gave up 29 total runs, and they look like a team that will need to win high-scoring games this season.

                      26 27 up 1 5-1
                      (5-1-0) 124 Cincinnati
The Reds weren’t expected to be much this season, but they’ve opened the season with a 5-1 record. However, Cincinnati recorded 3 wins over the worst team in baseball (Phillies), so don’t put too much stock into their record.

                      27 26 down 1 2-4
                      (2-4-0) 125 San Diego
The offensive lineup is extremely weak with no depth. The Padres ranked dead last (30th) in all of baseball last season in team batting average and on-base percentage. San Diego was held scoreless in their first three games, but a trip to Colorado aided their offense in scoring 32 runs. The Padres are just 2-4 after the first week of the season.

                      28 28 same 3-3
                      (3-3-0) 126 Colorado
Colorado went 3-3 in their first six games of the season, and their profile looks to be the same as in year’s past. The Rockies simply have to win a lot of high-scoring games to be successful. Their six games this season have averaged a whopping 14.3 runs per game.

                      29 29 same 0-5
                      (1-4-0) 129 Atlanta
The Braves are winless (0-5) after the first week of the season. Atlanta’s offense and pitching has been horrendous, and they already own a woeful -21 run differential (38-21) on the season. Atlanta looks to be in for a long season.

                      30 30 same 2-4
                      (3-3-0) 130 Philadelphia
The Phillies already own two unexpected road wins this season. Philadelphia opened the season at 0-4, but they won both weekend games against the Mets to improve their record to 2-4. But the Phillies are still the worst team in baseball as of right now.

Power Ratings compute offensive and defensive statistics into one number for each team, while accounting for factors like recent performances and strength of schedule. Power Ratings can be used as a baseline for relative spread index to compare current or future match-ups between two teams. The relative spread does not account for non-statistical factors like home-field advantage, recent injuries, game time decisions, rivalries, publicity, and weather.
