            April Good Month/Bad Month Pitchers

Max Scherzer has a knack of being a great bet early in the season.

Major League Baseball trades places with March Madness as the sports flavor of the month in April. And as we usher in America's favorite pastime, let's open the season with one of our favorite handicapping angles – good month pitchers.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of April. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in April, winning 33 percent or less of their team-start efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each April over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s April list.

            GOOD MONTH PITCHERS

            Bartolo Colon, Mets • 11-4 (6-2 H)

The ageless wonder will be the Mets fifth starter until Zach Wheeler returns. Throws almost exclusively fastball and moves this pitch all around the zone. Places batters under pressure by throwing strikes.

            *Gio Gonzalez, Nationals • 11-5 (7-1 H)

Gonzalez employs a tricky delivery and has great motion on his fastball and changeup. He has gotten in more trouble the last two years by telegraphing his curveball. Gonzalez is usually more effective early on in the season than late.

            *Zack Greinke, Diamondbacks • 11-2 (6-0 A)

A premier starting pitcher who adds and subtracts velocity on his fastball to get more movement. He can also spot it inside and out. His late breaking slider can be devastating and can dial up 12-to-6 curveball when necessary. Simply put, he is a tremendous talent.

            *Jason Hammel, Cubs • 11-4 (7-2 H)

Hammel will begin the season a back of the rotation starter for the Cubs, who still can throw in low to mid-90's, but has to keep the ball down or is liable be knocked around. His slider is second-most effective pitch.

            *Cole Hamels, Rangers • 10-4 (5-2 H)

Hamels has all the pitches and can throw any of them for strikes. He still employs a good fastball, but has developed an excellent cutter over the last four years, which has come at the expense of arguably the best changeup in the game. He also has roughly a half-dozen curves, which are all different in velocity and movement.

            *Scott Kazmir, Dodgers • 9-3 (6-2 A)

Kazmir knows how to pitch with a four-pitch assortment, which all can be thrown for strikes. Both his two-seam and four-seam fastballs are back in the 90's, but they have straightened out a bit and do not miss as many bats. There's lots of pressure on him to replace Greinke.

            Max Scherzer, Nationals • 10-5 (7-2 H)

Scherzer is a top line pitcher who can dominate with a mid-90's fastball, sweeping curve and biting slider. He shows extreme confidence with a loose repeatable delivery and is a great bet early on.

            Julio Teheran, Braves • 13-2 (7-1 A)

A talented hurler being wasted on bad team Atlanta team, but luckily is still young enough at 25 to be in prime if Braves rebuild quickly. Inconsistent command of his fastball hurts, but when he's right with this pitch, combined with a nasty slider and curve he can be tough to hit. FYI: these numbers represent Teheran’s career starts during April.

            BAD MONTH PITCHERS

            Homer Bailey, Reds • 4-8 (1-6 A)

Bailey is still recovering from Tommy John surgery and is probably a couple months away from pitching for Cincinnati.

            *Trevor Cahill, Cubs • 2-10 (0-4 A)

Cahill is now working out of the Cubs bullpen as setup man, but could be a spot starter if needed. Note: He is 0-7 in his last seven April starts.

            Andrew Cashner, Padres • 4-8 (1-5 A)

It's confusing as to why Cashner does not to throw his mid to upper 90's fastball more often. His secondary pitches are all a little above average, but he has spooked himself by tossing heat down the middle instead of going up the ladder with fastball based on count.

            Phil Hughes, Twins • 5-10 (2-6 H)

Hughes will be looking to regain his 2014 form with Minnesota after reverting to his Yankees numbers in 2015. He has good command of his fastball and cutter, plus his curve is tightly spun with excellent dropping motion. He will get into trouble early and appears not focused or feeling pressure if all of his pitches are not working.

            Corey Kluber, Indians • 3-9 (1-6 A)

Kluber is a legit ace who got off to slow start last year trying to live up to winning the Cy Young award. He has a mid 90's fastball that darts in or out and he can control at batters' knees. He also delivers a hard curve and the occasional changeup. A return to 2014 numbers is expected, but like all pitchers, he will need some run support.

            Jeff Samardzija, Giants • 5-11 (2-7 A)

Samardzija is 47-61 with a 4.09 ERA for his career, yet is making $9.8 million this year with San Francisco. He still has a good fastball and when he hits his spots, can be hard to hit. All oh his other pitches are ordinary. If he cannot win with Giants, his usefulness is all but done.

            Jered Weaver, Angels • 4-8 (1-3 H)

Former Angels ace spent the spring throwing fastball in the low 80's. Not being a Mark Buehrle-type, that renders most of his other pitches almost useless because the differences in speed do not fool batters. Claims to have found arm slot to add velocity and movement. Not a Play On pitcher.

                Saturday's six-pack

Odds to win the Super Bowl in Houston next February.......
                7-1-- New England Patriots
                8-1-- Seattle Seahawks, Pittsburgh Steelers
                10-1-- Green Bay Packers
12-1-- Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, Denver Broncos
                14-1-- Arizona Cardinals, Dallas Cowboys
                16-1-- Minnesota Vikings

                ---------------------------

Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

                13) Kid named Stripling made his MLB debut for the Dodgers at AT&T Park in San Francisco last night; he had a no-hitter with one out in 8th inning, there was a guy on first, Dodgers led 2-0 and Stripling had thrown 100 pitches, two years after having Tommy John surgery. What does the manager do?

He took him out, the reliever gave up a tying homer, Giants hit a walk-off HR in the ninth and social media in SoCal damn near imploded.

                12) Manager Dave Roberts had to take the kid out; with five outs to go, he would've been up around 125-130 pitches if they let him finish, which would be managing malpractice this early in the season, espeially with a kid who had an arm operation two years ago. So now the Dodgers are 0-2 on the road.

                11) 29 of 61 major league games played so far this week have seen the winning run score in the 7th inning or later, thats how important bullpens are now.

29 of 61 is not a percentage that will sustain over the whole season, but looks like the contending teams will need stronger bullpens than usual.

                10) Trevor Story is running amok; Colorado's rookie SS now has six homers in four games- he is the first player EVER whose first four big league hits were all home runs. And he's a good fielder, too.

                9) Cubs lost C/OF Kyle Schwarber for the season with a blown-out knee after an outfield collision in Arizona Thursday night. Nasty looking injury.

                8) Robinson Cano has four home runs in his first four games; LY, during an injury-plagued season, he hit his 4th home run in his 71st game.

                7) Seattle manager Scott Servais is the Mariners' 10th manager in the last 15 years; hasn't been a lot of continuity since Lou Piniella left town.

                6) A's-White Sox game Thursday was the first game this season that was 0-0 after the fifth inning- you'll be surprised how many of these there are, over the course of a season. Playoff teams win all kinds of games, high and low scoring ones.

                5) Josh Pastner goes from Memphis State to Georgia Tech to coach basketball; things had gotten ugly for him in Memphis, where the fanbase is ridiculously spoiled. He'll make $11M over six years at Tech, plus Mmphis will supplement that some over the next two years. Pastner is a good guy; we wish him well.

                4) One of the fun things about college sports is that different schools are strong in different sports. Championship game at the Frozen Four tonight is Quinnipiac-North Dakota, not a matchup you'd expect to see, except in hockey.

                3) Pistons 112, Wizards 99-- Stan Van Gundy has Detroit in the playoffs for the first time since 2009-- good for him.

                2) Jets' OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson retired at age 32; in his whole time with the Jets, 10,708 offensive plays, Ferguson missed one play. One.

                1) Justin Holiday plays for the Chicago Bulls; he played four years of college ball at Washington. In his junior year, he scored less than six points a game-- he scored 10.6 ppg as a senior, but he's worked his butt off and now he is in the NBA. Kids need to look at this-- leaving school before your skills are developed enough is career suicide. Way too many kids jump to the pros before they're ready- its a damn shame.
