    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Westgate Super Contest (1,727 entrants-- prize pool is $2.5M)
six most popular picks in Week 1 season record: 15-10

    6) Giants +4.5 (384)-- Lost 11 of last 14 games against the Eagles.

    5) Lions -3 (417)-- Lot of people have faith in this winless favorite.

    4) Bills +3.5 (470)-- Only QBs to beat Buffalo both won multiple Super Bowls.

    3) Vikings -4 (547)-- Minnesota lost its last five post-bye games.

    2) Cardinals -3 (768)-- Bruce Arians against his former employer.

    1) Patriots -7.5 (849)-- NE scored 47 ppg in last four games vs Colts.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

    13) Michigan State 27, Michigan 23-- Worst loss in a college football game since the Stanford band play 33 years ago. Wolvernes' special teams dominated the game until the punter dropped a snap with 0:10 left then coughed the ball up when hit and State ran the ball in as the gun sounded for the incredible, Pisarcik-like outcome.

Jalen Watts-Jackson scored the winning TD; sadly, his teammates piled on him in the end zone and he suffered a dislocated hip in the celebration. We wish him well.

By the way, this was an excellent, intense game; Sean McDonough's call of the bizarre final play was really good- he is an underrated play-by-play guy.

    12) Memphis 37, Ole Miss 24-- Good news and bad news for the 6-0 Tigers; they beat a regional rival from the SEC, which should really help their recruiting, they're 6-0 and headed to a great bowl, but there is no way on God's green earth that coach Fuente will be in Memphis next year. The big money schools are watching and they're going to throw a lot of cash at him in December.

    11) If you wagered on games Saturday just by reading the week's headlines, here is now you did:
-- South Carolina (-1)-- Their coach quit Monday; they still beat Vandy 19-10.
-- USC (+4.5)-- Fired its coach Sunday; they lost 41-31; AD Pat Haden collapsed before the game, but flew back to LA. He's about as good an AD as he was an NFL quarterback, as in, not very good.
-- Florida (+6.5)-- QB was suspended for a year; they lost 35-28 at LSU.

    10) Clemson 34, Boston College 17-- BC scored total of 41 points in its last five games; when I watch the Recruiting Day stuff in February, BC better have signed at least two QBs and 15 offensive players in all; their offense is pathetic.

    9) Utah 34, Arizona State 18-- Are Utes the best team in the Pac-12? Yes.

    8) North Carolina 50, Wake Forest 14-- Apparently a Wake assistant mocked UNC on social media in the offseason for its academic scandal; the Tar Heels remembered yesterday as they hammered the Demon Deacons.

    7) LSU 35, Florida 28-- Les Miles is one of our favorites; his kicker scored winning TD on a fake FG with 10:40 left. Who else does stuff like that? LSU is 6-0 and seems to be getting better; this was the Gators' first loss.

    6) Royals 6, Blue Jays 3-- Toronto is down 2-0 in another series; David Price had retired 18 hitters in a row, but imploded in the 7th and became first pitcher ever to lose his first seven postseason starts.

    5) Georgia 9, Missouri 6-- Dawgs snap two-game skid; loss here would've made the natives VERY restless. Tigers' season has been uudone by its QB getting suspended for off-field activities. Not often a team gives up nine points and still losses.

    4) Mets 4, Cubs 2-- Chicago had won nine games in row against the Mets, but that doesn't matter. Daniel Murphy is making hmself very rich this month.

    3) Rutgers 55, Indiana 52-- Hoosiers led 52-27 in third quarter; losses like this can implode programs and get coaches fired. This was 5th Rutgers game in last 2.5 years where the losing team scored 38+ points.

    2) Baylor 62, West Virginia 38-- If you took West Virginia +21, and watched them score 38 points but not cover the spread, well why are you betting against Baylor?

    1) Florida Sate 41, Louisville 21-- Jimbo Fisher is hell of a coach; he lost a QB who went 27-1 as a starter as well as four starters on OL and he still has the Seminoles unbeaten. Golson passed for 372 yards and three TDs; FSU trailed 7-6 at the half.

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NLCS Game 2 betting preview: Cubs at Mets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jake Arrieta struck out nine in 5 2/3 innings against St. Louis in his last start, but he also allowed four runs and five hits.

Chicago Cubs at New York Mets (+152, 5.5)

        Mets lead series 1-0.

The Chicago Cubs send ace Jake Arrieta to the mound against the host New York Mets on Sunday in hopes of evening the National League Championship Series at one win apiece. New York limited Chicago to five hits in the opener and received solo homers from the red-hot Daniel Murphy and Travis d'Arnaud en route to a 4-2 victory.

Arrieta has won 13 consecutive decisions dating back to late July - which includes two postseason wins - in a dynamic turnaround of his career. "I think that our players gain a lot of confidence when he pitches," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said in a press conference. "I think that's a normal part of that, but I think for the most part, it's just a matter of us being ourselves, trusting ourselves, sticking to our own methods." Murphy has homered in three straight postseason games - something he never has done in the regular season - to match the franchise mark set by Donn Clendenon in 1969, when the first baseman was named World Series MVP. "Saving the homers," Murphy joked after Game 1. "If I knew what I was doing, I would have hit more homers during the regular season."

        TV: 8:07 p.m. ET, TBS

LINE HISTORY: Books opened the Mets at +160 and the total at 5.5.

WEATHER: Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-40s with wind blowing in from left field at around 9 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH Jake Arrieta (2-0, 2.45 ERA) vs. Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (0-1, 3.68)

Arrieta struck out nine in 5 2/3 innings against St. Louis in his last start, but he also allowed four runs and five hits. He said he noticed a difference during the postseason starts in terms of the pressure and expectations being ratcheted up a notch. "The physical toll really hasn't bothered me at all, but I think that the mental side of it and all the energy you burn leading up to the game does have a little bit of effect," Arrieta said at his press conference. "But having a couple of these under my belt now, I'm pretty confident going in that I'll be able to handle that pretty well."

The 23-year-old Syndergaard made one start and one relief appearance in the NL Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers and said the experience taught him not to change his approach. "I think the anticipation before was thinking that the game was going to be completely different, but in reality it's still the same game," Syndergaard said in his press conference. "You're still 60 feet, 6 inches away. The only thing that's really different is the crowd's a little bit louder." Manager Terry Collins said the rookie also will start Game 6 if the series goes that far.

        TRENDS:

        * Under is 6-2-2 in the last 10 meetings.
        * Cubs are 21-8 in the last 29 meetings.
        * Cubs are 8-1 in Arrieta's last nine starts vs. National League East.
        * Under is 4-1-1 in Mets last six home games.

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday.......

              13) Broncos 26, Browns 23 OT-- Denver is 6-0; their defense scored another TD, the offense also scored one TD, is now just 12-52 on 3rd down last four games. Browns played third game in row decided on last play- they lost two of them.

              12) Bengals 34, Bills 21-- Cincy had huge 26-yard advantage in field position; every Buffalo drive started 80+ yards from goal line. Unbeaten Bengals have a bye week coming up, before they go to Pittsburgh in Week 8.

              11) Vikings 16, Chiefs 10-- Minnesota is 3-0 at home, 0-2 on road; Chiefs lost last five games. KC had only three points on two red zone drives- they had only 51 yards in first half. Rookie WR Diggs caught seven balls for 129 yards for Minnesota.

              10) Texans 31, Jaguars 20-- Houston was +3 in turnovers; they had two takeaways in first five games combined. Divisional home favorites are now 3-14 vs spread this season. Jaguars head to London next week to play the Bills.

              9) Lions 37, Bears 34 OT-- Detroit gets first win in weird game where Chicago had a 15-yard edge in field position but was -2 in turnovers. Bears' last two TD drives were both less than 25 yards. Detroit kicked a FG at 2:46 mark to cut Chicago lead to 31-27, a poor decision, but both teams scored after that, to send game to OT.

              8) Jets 34, Redskins 20-- Washington is very banged up, missing two starters on OL, the guy who broke Geno Smith's jaw should get a bonus from Jets, as Fitzpatrick has been very solid in this 4-1 start by Gang Green. Jets averaged 9.7 ypa here; only TDs by Washington came on a 37-yard drive and a blocked punt.

              7) Mets 4, Cubs 1-- Chicago is in deep trouble after ace Arrieta lost; series moves to Wrigley Field Tuesday night. Murphy homered again for the Mets.

              6) Steelers 25, Cardinals 13-- 3rd-string QB Jones came off bench to spark Steelers; he is better than Vick, who pulled hamstring. Arizona has two losses; in both games, they were -3 in turnovers. Redbirds had 469-310 edge in TY, but their 111 penalty yards all seemed to come at key times.

              5) Dolphins 38, Titans 10-- Miami's defense was supposedly unhappy with old DC who got fired; they had six sacks, four takeaways vs rookie QB Mariota, as Tennessee finishes three-game homestand 0-3. AFC South teams are 4-9 vs spread in non-division games this season.

              4) Panthers 27, Seahawks 23-- Carolina had two TDs in last 3:55, scoring winning TD with 0;32 left; Seahawks have now had a 4th quarter lead in their last five losses. Unbeaten Panthers are now 13-5 vs spread in last 18 games as a road underdog.

              3) Packers 27, Chargers 20-- Rivers threw for 503 yards but San Diego is now 0-3 on road, though they're 14-7-1 vs spread in last 22 games as road dog. Green Bay is now 6-0 heading into its bye week; this was first game they didn't cover this year.

              2) 49ers 25, Ravens 20-- Niners are giving up 13.3 ppg at home, 40 ppg on road; they averaged 10.9 ypa vs Baltimore defense that has seen better days. Ravens are 1-5 and in a freefall; they were -2 in turnovers, had only 13 points in three red zone drives.

              1) Patriots 34, Colts 27-- Game swung on ill-conceived fake punt by Indy in third quarter; two of their three wins this year cae with 40-year old backup QB Hasselbeck playing. Unsure why they let coach Pagano coach this season as a lame duck; if they don't want him, should've fired him last winter and moved on.

ALCS Game 3 betting preview: Royals at Blue Jays
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Kansas City Royals have not lost an American League Championship Series game since dropping Game 4 to the Toronto Blue Jays in 1985.

Kansas City Royals at Toronto Blue Jays (-167, 8)

                  Royals lead series 2-0.

The Kansas City Royals have not lost an American League Championship Series game since dropping Game 4 to the Toronto Blue Jays in 1985. The Royals took the final three games in 1985 to take that series and will go for their 10th straight ALCS win against the Blue Jays when the series shifts to Toronto for Game 3 on Monday.

Kansas City, which swept the Baltimore Orioles in the 2014 ALCS, managed one hit through the first six innings on Sunday but took a 2-0 lead over the Blue Jays with a come-from-behind victory in Game 2, sparked by five runs in the seventh. “No,” Royals manager Ned Yost responded when asked if he was surprised about the comeback in the postgame press conference. “You knew somewhere over the course of the game that we were going to mount some type of challenge there.” Toronto trailed its Division Series 0-2 against the Texas Rangers before coming back to win in five games and remains confident it can get back into the series. “Our back is against the wall, but it will be good to go back home where we normally play well,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons told reporters. “We'll have (Marcus Stroman) going on Monday. We feel good. It's a lot tougher from here. But we have a pretty good team, too.”

                  TV: 8:07 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

LINE HISTORY: Books opened the Jays -167 and the total at 8.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Johnny Cueto (1-0, 3.86 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH Marcus Stroman (0-0, 3.46)

Cueto’s had an up-and-down tenure with Kansas City since being acquired prior to the trade deadline but turned in his best performance when it counted the most with eight dominant innings in the clinching Game 5 of the ALDS. The Dominican Republic native set down 19 in a row to end that outing and was charged with two runs on as many hits while striking out eight without a walk. Cueto made his Royals debut at Toronto on July 31 and allowed three runs on seven hits and a pair of walks in six innings.

Stroman started the decisive game of the ALDS as well and left without factoring in the decision after allowing two runs and six hits in six innings to the Rangers. The 24-year-old has made only six starts since returning from knee surgery but has yet to suffer a loss in 2015. Stroman faced Kansas City only once previously in his career and cruised through six innings while surrendering one run to earn a win.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Royals are 1-5 in the last six meetings in Toronto.
                  * Under is 13-3 in umpire John Hirschbeck's last 16 games behind home plate vs. Kansas City.
                  * Royals are 4-0 in Cueto's last four starts vs. a team with a winning record.
                  * Blue Jays are 6-1 in Stroman's last seven starts.

Game 3 - Royals at Blue Jays
                    October 19, 2015

KANSAS CITY ROYALS (100-69) at TORONTO BLUE JAYS (96-73)

First pitch: Monday, 8:05 p.m. ET
                    Sportsbook.ag Line: Kansas City +155, Toronto -165, Total: 8

The Blue Jays will be looking to avoid a 3-0 series deficit when they host the Royals in Game 3 on Monday.

The Blue Jays had a 3-0 lead in Game 2, but the Royals ended up scoring six unanswered runs to win the game 6-3. David Price unraveled for Toronto in that one and his postseason struggles continue to haunt him. The Jays must now come away with a Game 3 win or they will have a gigantic hole to climb out of to advance to the World Series.

The starters for this pivotal game will be RHP Johnny Cueto (12-13, 3.46 ERA, 189 K) for Kansas City and RHP Marcus Stroman (4-0, 2.25 ERA, 27 K) for Toronto. Toronto should be confident playing on its home field on Monday, as the team is 3-1 against Kansas City at home this season. The Royals won’t be intimidated though, as they are 19-6 against the money line in October games over the past two seasons. The Blue Jays, meanwhile, are 27-8 against the money line as a home favorite of -150 to -200 this season.

2B Omar Infante (Oblique) is out indefinitely for Kansas City and RP Brett Cecil (Calf) is out for the season for Toronto.

Johnny Cueto will be looking to give his team a 3-0 lead and he will be feeling extremely confident after turning in his best performance as a Royal in Game 5 last round. Cueto pitched eight innings in that one and gave up just two earned runs with eight strikeouts and no walks. He was in complete control from the second inning on and will be looking to carry that momentum into this one on Monday.

Offensively, both SS Alcides Escobar (.321, 1 RBI in playoffs) and DH Kendrys Morales (.240, 3 HR, 8 RBI in playoffs) have stepped up for Kansas City. Escober has been getting on base at will and has three doubles in the past three games. Morales, meanwhile, is providing this team with some much needed power and will need to keep doing so the rest of the way. OF Lorenzo Cain (.259, 1 HR, 3 RBI in playoffs) has gotten a hit in every playoff game thus far, but he still hasn’t truly broken out. He’s due for a multi-hit game shortly and there’s a good chance it comes on Monday.

The Blue Jays desperately need a victory in Game 3 and Marcus Stroman will be on the mound to keep them in this series. Stroman has been big time throughout this postseason, giving up just five earned runs over his two starts (13.0 IP). Toronto could really use another quality start out of him in this one.

Offensively, DH Edwin Encarnacion (.320, 1 HR, 4 RBI in playoffs) has been the only Jays superstar that has been reliable hitting in the postseason. He will need to keep hitting while 3B Josh Donaldson (.231, 2 HR, 4 RBI in playoffs) and OF Jose Bautista (.222, 2 HR, 5 RB in playoffsI) try to find some consistency. 1B Chris Colabello (.375, 1 HR, 2 RBI in playoffs) has really stepped his game up for Toronto. If he can keep it up then it’d be a huge plus for this team.

Blue Jays happy at home after 2 losses
                      October 18, 2015

TORONTO (AP) Hip-hop music blared over the loudspeakers in an eerily empty, moodily lit Rogers Centre as Jose Bautista and the Toronto Blue Jays went through an easy workout on an off-day in the American League Championship Series.

With their backs against the wall again, there's no place they'd rather be.

''We're down 2-0 right now, we've got three games at home. These guys here, they're comfortable and we've definitely got the crowd behind us,'' outfielder Ben Revere said Sunday. ''We definitely feel much more comfortable being back at home.''

After Kansas City took the first two games at home, Game 3 is in Toronto on Monday night. First pitch is set for 8:07 p.m. The Blue Jays' Marcus Stroman faces Kansas City's Johnny Cueto in a matchup of two Division Series Game 5 starters.

''This series is not over, not even close,'' defending AL champion Royals center fielder Lorenzo Cain said after testing the bounce of the turf and the glare of the light in the closed-roofed stadium.

The Blue Jays advanced to the ALCS with a win that featured one of the most bizarre innings in postseason history. Bautista capped that seventh inning with a monster home run - and equally big bat toss.

That was the last long ball the top slugging team in baseball this year has hit.

Toronto relied heavily on the home run as it overcame the New York Yankees to win the East and it connected for 123 of its 232 homers this year at home. It then slugged its way to three straight wins over Texas after losing the first two at home in the ALDS.

In the chilly air of Kansas City, the Blue Jays scored just three runs and went deep none.

Now, they are more than ready to play in front of another raucous crowd that has filled their ballpark - and got rowdy in the deciding Game 5 against Texas. So much so, security should be beefed up for the ALCS.

No more deep alleys of Kauffman Stadium where their drives died. No more unfriendly fans who played tricks with Ryan Goins on the flyball that changed the tenor of Game 2, setting off a five-run rally that led to a 6-3 come-from-behind win for the Royals.

''Kansas City's park is really big,'' Revere said. ''Some of the balls we were hitting there, they were going nowhere. Now we're back home, some of those balls that were crushed are going to go over the heads or go in the gaps more.''

Of course, the Blue Jays will have to figure out a way to beat Cueto and his multitude of pitches. The Royals dreadlocked, trade-deadline acquisition from the Cincinnati Reds has found his dominant form after struggling in late summer. He gave up two runs in eight innings against Houston in Game 5 of the Division Series.

''He's just a guy that is constantly trying to change your timing at the plate, whether it's with his quick pitch or his shimmy on the mound and he's got six pitches,'' Blue Jays center fielder Kevin Pillar said.'' But ultimately you've got to throw the ball over the plate and that's what we're trying to do is hit his mistakes.''

Cueto has had good success against Blue Jays players. He's only allowed two homers in career 88 plate appearances, with Troy Tulowitzki, with Colorado, and Edwin Encarnacion going deep.

''I'm going to toe the rubber and give everything I've got and I'm going to take the same approach as I did the previous game and just be ready to go, ready to pitch,'' he said through a translator.

The Royals should have their hands full, too, with Stroman, the 24-year-old right-hander who made a speedy return from a torn left knee ligament in March and excelled down the stretch. He was 4-0 with a 1.67 ERA in four starts - he didn't return until after the testy series at end of July into August between the teams.

Stroman got that Game 5 start against Texas and now Toronto turns to him to help get them back in a series in which the odds are stacked against them: All but three of the previous 25 teams to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven era have won the series.

''He's got the `it' factor,'' Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. ''It doesn't mean he's going to go out and dominate (Monday), but you have a great feeling every time he takes the mound because he can pull of something special.''

James to miss Cavs' preseason finale, get ready for opener
                            October 19, 2015

CLEVELAND (AP) LeBron James will sit out Cleveland's final preseason game against Dallas on Monday night, but Cavaliers coach David Blatt said the four-time MVP will be ready when the regular season opens next week.

James, who had an anti-inflammatory injection in his back last week, hasn't played since Oct. 12.

Asked before Cleveland's preseason finale against Mavericks if there was any chance James wouldn't be ready when the Cavaliers visit Chicago on Oct. 27, Blatt said, ''he will absolutely be ready for the season opener.''

James missed a career-high 13 games last season with back and knee issues.

Cleveland has gone 0-6 while dealing with several injuries during the preseason. Kyrie Irving fractured his left kneecap in Game 1 of last season's NBA Finals and Kevin Love played for the first time Sunday after dislocating his left shoulder in the opening round of the playoffs.

Preview: Mets (90-72) at Cubs (97-65)
                                Game: 3
                                Venue: Wrigley Field
                                Date: October 20, 2015 8:07 PM EDT

CHICAGO (AP) Kris Bryant, Kyle Schwarber and Jason Hammel played hacky sack with a baseball, and manager Joe Maddon chatted amiably with his players and staff as he made his way around Wrigley Field on Monday afternoon.

Down 2-0 to the New York Mets in the NL Championship Series, the Chicago Cubs are sticking with what worked for them during a breakthrough season.

'We'll come out tomorrow, we'll be ready to play,' Maddon said. 'Our guys are always ready to play.'

It might not matter if the Mets continue to pitch as well as they did in New York. Matt Harvey and Noah Syndergaard shut down Chicago's powerful lineup in the first two games of the series, putting New York in an ideal position to make it to the World Series for the first time in 15 years - a quaint little drought compared to the Cubs' seven mostly empty decades since they last played in the Fall Classic.

According to STATS, the winner of the first two games of a best-of-seven series in the baseball playoffs has advanced 83 percent (63 of 76) of the time, and the Mets have Jacob deGrom heading to the mound for Game 3 on Tuesday night.

'We have a lot of confidence,' manager Terry Collins said. 'Any night that he pitches, we've got a good chance to win.'

DeGrom is coming off a pair of impressive victories in the NL Division Series, albeit for different reasons.

The 27-year-old was dominant in Game 1 at Los Angeles, striking out 13 while pitching seven scoreless innings in New York's 3-1 win. Then he came back for Game 5 and worked six effective innings despite not having his best stuff.

The reigning NL Rookie of the Year matched Bartolo Colon for the team lead with 14 wins this year, but it was the gutsy start against the Dodgers that really cemented his place among the best young pitchers in the game.

'The second game was definitely a battle,' deGrom said. 'I feel like it was more impressive just because it wasn't easy. When you have your best stuff, it's a lot easier to pitch.'

While deGrom has struggled in three career starts against Chicago, Harvey and Syndergaard provided a roadmap for the right-hander in the first two games of the series. Harvey and Syndergaard pounded the strike zone, getting ahead of the Cubs' young sluggers and keeping them off balance.

The Mets started the Cubs with a strike in 43 of 68 at-bats in New York, according to STATS. They threw 177 of their 274 pitches for a strike, a 64.6 percent success rate.

Those are important numbers against the patient Cubs, who finished second in the majors to Toronto with 567 walks this season. St. Louis, Chicago's opponent in the NLDS, threw a first-pitch strike 56.3 percent of the time and had a 59.9 strike percentage for the series, and the Cubs clubbed 10 homers and walked 15 times.

'I don't want our guys to change based on an umpire in the previous game, it could change in the next game,' Maddon said. 'Regardless of the fact that the strike zone is a static or supposedly a static area, it's not. It's just depending upon the guy.

'So I prefer that we just stay with our normal patterns, and then we have to adjust sometimes during the course of the game. That's it. You just have to make adjustments, but you don't necessarily want to change,' he said.

Bryant, who had two hits and drove in Chicago's only run in Game 2, said everyone on the Cubs just has to stick to their own approach.

'We've gotten pretty far just the way we've been going,' he said. 'I think it's a matter of, we've hit some balls hard and they haven't been falling. That's the way baseball goes sometimes.'

While Harvey, Syndergaard and deGrom rely on their electric stuff, Kyle Hendricks, the Game 3 starter for Chicago, is more dependent on location for his success. The Dartmouth graduate threw six shutout innings in each of his last two starts of the season, but was yanked in the fifth inning of his Game 2 start at St. Louis in the division series.

Job No. 1 for Hendricks against New York is stopping Daniel Murphy, who is one away from matching Carlos Beltran's record of homering in five straight postseason games.

'He's swinging a hot bat,' Hendricks said. 'Sometimes the best thing to do is pick your spots. See when guys are on base, when they're not, when you can pitch around him. Regardless, when he comes up, you've definitely got to be careful. You can't make any mistakes with him.'
