    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Six of the more interesting NFL games this weekend.......

-- Broncos @ Browns-- McCown has played better than Manning this year.

-- Bengals @ Bills-- Only QBs to beat Buffalo: Brady, Eli Manning.

-- Redskins @ Jets-- Still unclear how good these Jets are.

-- Cardinals @ Steelers-- Bruce Arians against a team that fired him as OC.

-- Panthers @ Seahawks-- Unbeaten Carolina is a TD underdog.

-- Giants @ Eagles-- Two best teams in NFC East meet.

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Some college basketball knowledge.....

Before we start, this kind of sums up my feelings on the incredibly sad Lamar Odom situation that is unfolding in Las Vegas this week........

Came home from vacation today; always love being in Las Vegas, but it is good to be home, too. Problem is I have trouble sleeping on planes now, so I make lists or read a lot. Here is some college basketball iknowledge I came up with today.......

    13) Kentucky lost seven players from LY's team to the NBA; not a lot of college teams who have two subs drafted, but they reloaded with more talented freshmen and will be very good again, though probably not 38-1 good.

    12) Maryand went 14-4 in its first year in Big 14, after being 30-38 in ACC play its last four years there. Terps have more expectations this year; will they handle them?

    11) North Carolina returns nine of its top 10 scorers, which is good on one hand, but also means they didn't have many NBA-ready players- they'll have a big edge as far as experience goes this winter. They still need to shoot the ball better.

    10) Kansas has won Big X regular season 11 years in a row, but they're only 8-8 on road in confernece play the last two years. Jayhawks return their top three scorers this year for the first time in six years.

    9) Arizona has 67 wins the last two years, but they haven't been in the Final Four since 2001; the natives are getting restless. Wildcats lost five kids to the NBA the last two years; they're rebuilding a little bit this season.

    8) Iowa State has four senior starters, six of its top eight scorers back but they also have a new coach, which usually means a period of adjustment. High expectations for ISU, but coach Prohm had high expectations at Murray State too and he won a lot of games there, enough to get this job.

    7) Villanova won 62 games the last two years, but hasn't been to Sweet 16 since '09; they're 32-4 in the new (weaker) Big East, but how can they play better in March?

    6) Gonzaga/Texas will both be at a tournament in the Bahamas Nov 25-27, about a week after they play separate games in Asia. Texas is playing Washington in China on Nov 13; Gonzaga is playing Pitt in Japan. Not lot of time for classwork there.

    5) Wichita State has 30-35-30 wins the last three years; they've been helped by Big East scooping up Creighton, the Shockers' main MVC rival. Wichita has four senior starters, so they'll be awful good again this year. Coach Gregg Marshall makes $3M a year (top 10 in country); they take basketball seriously in Wichita.

    4) Cal Golden Bears had such a good recruiting year, it is thought that they have the best starting five in the Pac-12. Cal took a trip to Australia this summer; those trips (allowed once every four years) are great for bonding and team chemistry.

    3) Tom Izzo has taken Michigan Sate to seven Final Fours in 20 years.

    2) How the real world works sometimes: a kid named Tyler Dorsey committed to go to Arizona couple years ago, but was cut from a USA Basketball U18 team that Arizona coach Sean Miller was an assistant coach for. Young Dorsey re-opened his recruitment and now plays for Oregon, in the same league as Arizona.

    1) Oregon was 26-10 LY, 13-5 in Pac-12 but home attendance averaged only 6,209 a game, their lowest figure in 23 years, despite a brand-new arena and a good team. The Ducks have had off-court issues that hurt their public perception; they've cut ticket prices 34% this year in hope of luring some of those fans back.

NLDS Betting Preview: Mets at Dodgers
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two of the bigs' best pitchers in Jacob deGrom and Zack Greinke face off for a chance to advance to the NLCS.

New York Mets at Los Angeles Dodgers (-148, 6.0)

The Los Angeles Dodgers set things up so that Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke could each pitch twice in a five-game series, and now they’ll pin their hopes on the second of the two aces. Greinke will go up against Jacob deGrom when the Dodgers host the Mets in a decisive Game 5 of the National League Division Series on Thursday.

Kershaw allowed one run and three hits over seven innings in Game 4 to lead Los Angeles to a 3-1 win and get the series back to the west coast. “Definitely wanted to send this back to LA,” Kershaw told reporters. “I feel confident with Zack going in Game 5 back home, so really just wanted to push it.” deGrom dominated Game 1 in Los Angeles, scattering five hits and striking out 13 over seven scoreless innings to best Kershaw, and has the confidence of his whole team. “There's a reason why we thought, hey, look, if we're up 2-1 in Game 4 that we're going to save (deGrom) because he's the guy we want on the mound,” New York manager Terry Collins told reporters. “…And once again, this is a time when you need your guys to step up and you certainly think he'll do that.”

        TV:
        8:07 p.m. ET, TBS

        LINE HISTORY:
The Dodgers opened as -150 home favorites and have come down very slightly from that number to sit at -148. The total hasn't moved off its opening number of 6.0.

        INJURY REPORT:

        Mets - N/A.

Dodgers - 3B J. Turner (probable Thursday, knee), C Y. Grandal (questionable Thursday, shoulder), 2B C. Utley (questionable Thursday, shoulder).

        WEATHER REPORT:
There is a slight chance of thunderstorms and a 25 percent chance of rain for Game 5 at Dodger Stadium. There will also be a five-to-ten mile per hour wind gusting out to right field.

        PITCHING MATCHUP:
Mets RH Jacob deGrom (0-0, 0.00 ERA), vs. Dodgers RH Zack Greinke (1-0, 2.57)

DeGrom waited until late in Game 4 to do his side work in case he was needed in the game but did not get into the contest and should be ready to go on full rest in Game 5. The 27-year-old has allowed a total of one run and 10 hits in 17 innings over his last three starts. DeGrom’s 13 strikeouts Tom Seaver’s franchise record in a playoff game.

Greinke carried over his outstanding work from the regular season into Game 2, when he yielded two runs – both on solo home runs – and five hits over seven innings to pick up the win. The Cy Young hopeful struck out eight without issuing a walk in that win and has allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of his last five starts. Greinke is 3-2 with a 3.48 ERA in eight career postseason starts.

        TRENDS:

        * Over is 4-1 in Greinke's last five starts versus the Mets.
        * Over is 7-2-1 in the last 10 meetings in Los Angeles.
        * Dodgers are 20-4 in Greinke's last 24 home starts versus a team with a winning record.
        * Mets are 8-0 in deGrom's last eight starts versus a team with a winning record.

        CONSENSUS:
The public likes the Dodgers to advance to the NLCS with 62.68 percent of wagers backing Los Angeles.
