Blue Jays LHP Cecil injures calf

The Toronto Blue Jays might have lost relief pitcher Brett Cecil for the remainder of the postseason after he suffered a torn left calf muscle on Friday in Game 2 of the American League Division Series.

Cecil, the Blue Jays' top left-hander in the bullpen, was injured during a rundown in the eighth inning of the Blue Jays' 6-4 loss to the Texas Rangers in Toronto. He had to be escorted off the field with assistance after tagging out Mike Napoli.

"He's got a pretty significant tear, so that's not very good," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said.

The 29-year-old Cecil had a 2.49 ERA in 54 1/3 innings during the regular season. He allowed only two unearned runs in 37 games between June 24 and the end of the regular season.

The Rangers took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series with the Blue Jays that shifts to Texas for Game 3 on Sunday.

            Saturday's NLDS doubleheader betting preview
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Cardinals blanked the Cubs 4-0 in Game 1 and look to Jaime Garcia to give them a 2-0 series lead.

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals (-134, 6.5)

The St. Louis Cardinals look to take a commanding 2-0 lead when they host the Chicago Cubs for Game 2 of their National League Division Series on Saturday. St. Louis posted a 4-0 victory in the opener of the best-of-five set, breaking Chicago's nine-game winning streak that included Wednesday's wild-card victory at Pittsburgh.

The Cubs will look to get their bats moving in Game 2 after recording just three singles in the opener. "We could not get anything generated," Chicago manager Joe Maddon said during his postgame press conference. "They've pitched really well all season - that's a big reason they won 100 games." Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was in the Game 1 lineup despite a sprained left thumb and was hitless in three at-bats. "Anytime you get Yadier back there, it's huge," St. Louis' Randal Grichuk said after the opener. "The things he does and brings to the team, you can't even say them all."

            TV: 5:37 p.m. ET, TBS

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH Kyle Hendricks (8-7, 3.95 ERA) vs. Cardinals LH Jaime Garcia (10-6, 2.43)

Hendricks is a surprise Game 2 starter but was dominant in his final two regular-season outings, giving up three hits and striking out 17 in 12 scoreless innings. "I've been preparing myself for any possibilities, so I wasn't caught off-guard," Hendricks told reporters. "But I was definitely excited. I'm glad they gave me this opportunity." Hendricks is 0-1 with a 3.97 ERA in four career starts against St. Louis and gave up four runs and six hits in five frames of a no-decision on May 5.

Garcia is 0-2 with a 4.23 ERA in six career postseason starts but is taking the ball in the playoffs for the first time since 2012. A series of arm injuries has plagued his career and caused a transformation from a power pitcher to a hurler that relies heavily on his sinker and changeup. "Those two pitches are big for me," Garcia told reporters. "It's always about being willing to make changes for good and reinventing yourself. The sinker and changeup are my strength right now."

            TRENDS:

            * Under is 3-1-1 in Garcia's last five starts vs. Cubs.
            * Cubs are 10-1 in their last 11 road games.
            * Cubs are 0-7 in their last seven Divisional Playoff games.
            * Cardinals are 10-2 in Garcia's last 12 starts.

New York Mets at Los Angeles Dodgers (Off, Off)

The New York Mets defeated Los Angeles ace Clayton Kershaw in the opener and look to take a 2-0 lead when they visit the Dodgers for Game 2 of their National League Division Series on Saturday. Jacob deGrom was scintillating with 13 strikeouts in seven scoreless innings as New York recorded a 3-1 victory in Game 1.

Los Angeles standout Zack Greinke will look to even the best-of-five series and keep his club from heading to New York on the brink of elimination. The Game 1 defeat reminds the Dodgers of their postseason struggles as they have lost their last eight series in which they've dropped the opening game. Daniel Murphy's solo homer and David Wright's two-run single provided the Mets with the offense they needed on a night in which they recorded just five hits. New York manager Terry Collins, 66, won his postseason debut and sends rookie Noah Syndergaard to the mound against Greinke.

            TV: 9:07 p.m. ET, TBS

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (9-7, 3.24 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Zack Greinke (19-3, 1.66)

Syndergaard gave the rotation a big boost with his emergence as he held opposing hitters to a .225 average. The 23-year-old was just 2-5 with a 4.23 ERA in 12 road starts, but he went 2-0 with a 2.29 ERA in his last three outings away from home. "To me, it's just all about getting comfortable out there on the mound on the road," Syndergaard said in his press conference. "I feel like in the last couple starts I had on the road, I had a lot of success, lot of comfort."

Greinke posted the lowest ERA by a starting pitcher since Atlanta's Greg Maddux (1.63) in 1995 and it was under 2.00 the entire season. He allowed two or fewer runs in 26 of his 32 starts and is one of three candidates for the NL Cy Young Award - Kershaw and Chicago's Jake Arrieta being the others. "I've probably stopped trying to trick guys as much as I used to," Greinke said, "and try to make my pitches as good as possible."

            TRENDS:

            * Mets are 7-0 in their last seven Divisional Playoff games.
            * Mets are 4-1 in the last five meetings in Los Angeles.
            * Over is 5-0-1 in Syndergaard's last six road starts.
            * Under is 4-1 in Greinke's last five home starts.

                Rangers look for sweep
                October 11, 2015

TORONTO BLUE JAYS (93-71) at TEXAS RANGERS (90-74)

First pitch: Sunday, 8:05 p.m. ET
AL Division Series – Game 3
                Sportsbook.ag Line: Toronto -130, Texas +120, Total: 9.5

The Rangers will be going for a sweep over the Blue Jays when the teams meet in Texas on Sunday.

Game 2 of this series was extremely exciting and the Rangers would end up winning 6-4 in the 14th inning. 3B Hanser Alberto was the guy that drove in what would be the game-winning run. It was especially big for him, as he made a costly error earlier in the game and was able to save face by coming through in the clutch. The Blue Jays now have their backs against the wall and will have to win two games on the road if they are going to have a chance of winning this series.

The starters for this elimination game will be RHP Marco Estrada (12-8, 3.28 ERA, 120 K) for Toronto and LHP Martin Perez (3-6, 4.46 ERA, 48 K) for Texas. One thing favoring Toronto in this game is the fact that the Rangers are just 2-10 against the money line after three or more consecutive Overs in the past two seasons. Texas is, however, 60-54 against the money line as an underdog of +100 or higher this season. RP Brett Cecil (Calf) is out for the series for Toronto after suffering a tear last game and 3B Adrian Beltre (Back) is questionable for Texas in this game.

Marco Estrada will be tasked with trying to save his team from being eliminated on Sunday. Estrada ended the season extremely well, picking up four straight quality starts in a row. He started against this Rangers team in Texas on Aug. 27 and pitched a very solid game, allowing just one earned run with six strikeouts in six innings of work. He’ll need to be as sharp as he was in that game on Sunday.

Offensively, SS Troy Tulowitzki (.280, 17 HR, 70 RBI) really needs to step his game up. He was a huge acquisition for this team at the deadline, but he is 0-for-10 with four strikeouts in this series. It will be hard for the Jays to force a Game 4 if he is not producing at the plate. 3B Josh Donaldson (.297, 41 HR, 123 RBI) will be a player to watch in this one. He is 5-for-13 with three doubles, a homer and two RBI against Perez in his career. Toronto will need him to be at his best on Sunday.

Martin Perez didn’t make many appearances this season, but he came on strong at the end of the year and the Rangers will be feeling comfortable with him in this game. In his final two starts this season, Perez allowed just one earned run over 13.0 innings of work. He struck out 10 batters in those games and walked just two as well. Offensively, it’ll be very tough for the Rangers to continue to win games without 3B Adrian Beltre (.287, 18 HR, 83 RBI). Beltre is questionable for this game and will really be missed if he can’t play.

One guy who has been a major x-factor in this series is OF Delino DeShields (.261, 2 HR, 37 RBI). He is 5-for-11 with two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored. If he can continue to produce at the plate then the Rangers would have a much easier job making up for the loss of Beltre.

Rangers run home looking for ALDS sweep
                  October 10, 2015

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Rougned Odor was struggling so badly a month into this season that he was sent back to the minor leagues by the Texas Rangers.

Now the 21-year-old second baseman is a big reason Texas returned home with a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five AL Division Series against Toronto.

Aggressive on the bases, Odor scored twice in Game 2 with a pair of nifty slides into the plate - one on a shallow sacrifice fly, and the other for the tiebreaking run in the 14th inning of their 6-4 win.

''Right now, he's in a position that he feels good, and he feels his confidence level is high and he can do whatever,'' shortstop Elvis Andrus said Saturday before the Rangers worked out at home.

Sort of like a then-22-year-old Andrus was in 2010, when the Rangers also had a 2-0 ALDS lead and were on the way to their first World Series. Andrus is now the longest-tenured position player in Texas.

Game 3 against the Blue Jays is Sunday night in Texas, a game that will start about the same time the Dallas Cowboys should be finishing their home game across the street against the New England Patriots.

Left-hander Martin Perez (3-6) pitches for the Rangers in the potential clincher. Marco Estrada (13-8), who held hitters to a MLB-low .183 batting average after the All-Star break, starts for Toronto.

''We need a big outburst with the bats, score a lot of runs,'' Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. ''We score in bunches. That's kind of our trademark. ... Hopefully we can do it one time, you know, catch our breath a little bit and gain a little confidence, maybe we can hang in this thing.''

Odor got the game-winning rally in the 14th started Friday with a two-out infield single, then took a wide turn around second on a single to right by Chris Gimenez before sliding feet-first back into the base with shortstop Troy Tulowitzki quickly applying a tag - the safe call stood after a long video replay.

Two pitches later, Odor was going around catcher Russell Martin again, swiping his hand on the back of the plate to put Texas ahead to stay on Hanser Alberto's single.

Manager Jeff Banister calls Odor one of those players that will ''completely will yourself to score'' and with the sole purpose to cross the plate.

''That's where I think Roogie Odor is,'' Banister said. ''Great heads-up baserunning, but also just to have the body control to be able to make the slides that he made. Incredible.''

A dozen innings before his go-ahead run, Odor came home on a short flyball to center to score on a close play. After diving head-first toward the plate and initially reaching with his left hand to get under Martin, Odor avoided the tag by pulling his left arm back and then reaching around with his right hand to hit the plate.

''That excitement and exuberance that he plays with, it lifts everybody else in this clubhouse,'' Gimenez said. ''Literally, this is a kids' game, he's literally a kid playing this game. ... And he's playing like a man. Doing what he's doing is pretty special.''

Odor hit .259 in 114 games as rookie last season, when he was the youngest player in the majors as a 20-year-old, making his debut in May 2014.

After hitting .144 with 25 strikeouts in 90 at-bats through the first 31 games this season, he was sent back to Triple-A Round Rock. Since getting called back June 15, he is hitting .292 with 16 home runs and 53 RBIs in 93 games, including the first two games of this series.

Alberto is the rookie forced into action since veteran third baseman Adrian Beltre exited Game 1 early with lower back stiffness. Beltre, still considered day to day, was excused from Saturday's workout to stay home and rest, and will be reevaluated again before Game 3 on Sunday night.

Only once in their previous seven playoff series did the Blue Jays lose the first two games. That was the 1989 ALCS when they lost the best-of-seven series in five games to Oakland.

''We have to keep trusting our teammates and believe in what got us here,'' Josh Donaldson said. ''We still have an opportunity to win this series.''

                    Beltre excused from Rangers workout

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Adrian Beltre was excused from the Texas Rangers' workout at the ballpark Saturday to rest his back in the AL Division Series.

Beltre missed Game 2 on Friday because of a lower back strain that also forced the third baseman's early exit from the series opener on Thursday.

The Rangers say Beltre is resting, taking medications and still considered day to day.

Beltre will be evaluated before Game 3 on Sunday night. A Rangers' win over Toronto would clinch the best-of-five division series.

                    • Jays' reliever Cecil done for playoffs
                      October 10, 2015

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) The season is over for reliever Brett Cecil, who has a torn left calf muscle and has been replaced on Toronto's postseason roster.

Rookie right-hander Ryan Tepera was added to Toronto's roster on Saturday. Tepera had a 3.27 ERA in 32 appearances over three stints with the Blue Jays this season.

Cecil said Saturday that he won't need surgery and will be ready for spring training. He got hurt while tagging out Mike Napoli in a rundown than ended the eighth inning of the Blue Jays' 6-4 loss to Texas on Friday that gave the Rangers a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series.

While Cecil initially thought he only had a cramp, he said the ''pain took over'' once the adrenaline quickly wore off after the inning-ending play.

                      • LEADING OFF: Both ALDS in Texas; Keuchel up for Astros
                        October 11, 2015

A look at what's happening around the major leagues today:

                        TEXAS TWO-STEP

Both AL Division Series travel to Texas, with the Astros hosting the Royals at 4:10 p.m. EDT and the Blue Jays facing the Rangers at 8:10 p.m. EDT. Kansas City and Houston split Games 1 and 2 in Missouri, while Texas takes a 2-0 advantage into Game 3 after a 14-inning 6-4 victory in Game 2 in Toronto.

                        TAKEN OUT

The Mets will likely play Wilmer Flores at shortstop when their NL Division Series continues Monday after Ruben Tejada broke his right leg on Chase Utley's takeout slide Saturday night. Tejada sustained a fractured right fibula and was placed on a flatbed vehicle with an air cast on his leg, while Utley was ruled safe on a video review as the Dodgers went on to win 5-2. ''Yeah, they're angry,'' Mets manager Terry Collins said of his players. ''You lose in a playoff series to that serious of an injury, yeah, they're not very happy about it.''

                        CLIMATE CONTROL

Astros ace Dallas Keuchel has been great everywhere this year, but particularly at home, where he was 15-0 with a 1.46 ERA. Keuchel has been asked about his home dominance often, and on Saturday, he jokingly supposed that ''maybe it's the temperature'' set by the Minute Maid Park air conditioner. Royals manager Ned Yost decided to start Keuchel in the All-Star game this year. ''He's just good,'' Yost said Saturday. ''I mean, he's just good. But you look at his home and away record, there's quite a big difference in that. But ... he just pitches good here. And sometimes there's just no reason for it.''

                        MAKING NICE

Edinson Volquez throws for the Royals, facing George Springer for the first time since Volquez broke Springer's right wrist by hitting him with a pitch on July 1. Springer missed two months with the injury, and Volquez said he ''felt really bad at the time'' and ''reached out to him and I talked to him a little bit and I said sorry about what happened to him. I was really sad about that.''

                        CECIL DONE

The Blue Jays are moving on after top left-handed reliever Brett Cecil was ruled out for the postseason after tearing a torn calf muscle in Game 2 - Cecil knew it was a bad injury right away, crying as he walked to the clubhouse after suffering the injury. ''It's not the way I perceived it ending,'' he said. Toronto replaced him on its playoff roster with right-hander Ryan Tepera.

                        BELTRE BACK?

Adrian Beltre's status remains uncertain as he continues to battle a lower back strain that kept him at home while the rest of the Rangers worked out on Saturday. The third baseman was injured during Game 1 of the ALDS and sat out Friday's 14-inning Game 2. ''He's day to day, has made some improvement, continues to get better,'' manager Jeff Banister said, adding ''you can never count Adrian out of anything, and where I think he is right now is probably irrelevant.'' Beltre's replacement, Hanser Alberto, singled in the go-ahead run in Game 2.

                        • Torre to review Utley's slide for possible discipline
                          October 11, 2015

LOS ANGELES (AP) Major League Baseball executive Joe Torre will review the controversial slide by Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Chase Utley into New York Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada for possible disciplinary action after Game 2 of their NL Division Series.

Utley broke Tejada's right leg during the seventh inning of the Dodgers' 5-2 win Saturday night while trying to break up a double play at second base.

''I'd hate to think that Utley tried to hurt somebody,'' said Torre, MLB's chief baseball officer. ''It certainly was late. That concerns me. The lateness of the slide. ... I'm looking at it to see if anything should be done.''

Torre, a former manager of the Dodgers and New York Yankees, was at Dodger Stadium for the game.

''I have to determine if I thought it was excessive,'' he said. ''Not that you shouldn't slide hard, but as I said, just the late slide is probably the only thing that is in question right now.''

Rule 5.09 (a) (13) states ''The objective of this rule is to penalize the offensive team for deliberate, unwarranted, unsportsmanlike action by the runner in leaving the baseline for the obvious purpose of crashing the pivot man on a double play, rather than trying to reach the base. Obviously this is an umpire's judgment play.

Torre said second base umpire Chris Guccione ruled it was a legal slide on the field.

''That's a judgment call,'' Torre said. ''I'm still watching replays of it. They get a chance, one shot to look at it. ... I can't fault the umpire for everything he had to look at.''

Torre also said umpires were correct to award Utley second base after the Dodgers asked for a video review, which determined Tejada did not touch the base on the play. Utley did not touch the base on the slide.

''He never needed to touch the base because the umpire called him out,'' Torre said. ''You're correcting the umpire's mistake. In that situation, going to replay and they see the runner never touched the base, but the umpire called him out, by replay rules we can correct the situation and put the runner on the bag.''

Torre said Tejada was not subject to the protection of the ''neighborhood play'' which allows fielders to not touch the base but still be credited with the out. The throw Tejada received from second baseman Daniel Murphy took Tejada away from the bag.

''This wasn't a neighborhood play because spinning around and reaching for the ball and stuff like that,'' Torre said.

                                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marco Estrada’s 2.78 ERA after the All-Star break ranked second and his 0.91 WHIP paced all AL starters.

Kansas City Royals at Houston Astros (-175, 7)

The Kansas City Royals have been cool under pressure since a strong September in 2014 pushed them all the way to the seventh game of the World Series, and staring down an 0-2 hole in the American League Division Series pulled out the best in the team. The Royals will try to take their first lead in 2015 American League Division Series when they visit the Houston Astros for Game 3 on Sunday.

Kansas City dropped Game 1 on Thursday and was down 4-2 in Game 2 on Friday before rallying to earn a 5-4 win behind some clutch hitting from Eric Hosmer, Alcides Escobar and Ben Zobrist, and its usual dominant work from the bullpen. “I kept telling the boys just we've got a long way to go,” Royals manager Ned Yost told reporters. “Just keep plugging away. Just keep plugging away. Let it happen. Don't try to make it happen. Just let it happen. And it did.” The Astros should feel plenty confident heading home with CY Young hopeful and wild-card winner Dallas Keuchel heading to the mound in Game 3, and they are looking to wrap up the best-of-five series without going back out on the road. “I know the Houston fans are ready for us to come home,” Astros manager A.J. Hinch told reporters. “We've got homefield advantage for the rest of this series. We got to take care of business in our own back yard.”

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Edinson Volquez (13-9, 3.55 ERA) vs. Astros LH Dallas Keuchel (20-8, 2.48)

Volquez tuned up for the postseason with two hitless innings at Minnesota last Sunday and surrendered three or fewer earned runs in each of his final four regular-season appearances. The Dominican Republic native is looking for his first postseason win and allowed a total of nine runs in 6 2/3 innings while starting in the 2010 NLDS for the Cincinnati Reds and the 2014 wild-card game for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Volquez is 6-0 with a 2.70 ERA in nine career starts against Houston but had to be bailed out by his offense at the Astros on July 1, when he was ripped for five runs and eight hits in five innings without factoring in the decision.

Keuchel started Tuesday’s AL wild-card game in New York on three days’ rest and dominated over six innings, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out seven in the 3-0 triumph. The All-Star has yielded a total of four runs in 26 2/3 innings over his last four starts and is 15-0 with a 1.46 ERA in 18 starts at home in 2015. Keuchel tossed eight scoreless innings to beat the Royals at home on June 30 but was lit up for five runs on 10 hits in 6 2/3 frames at Kansas City on July 26.

                                TRENDS:

                                * Royals are 5-0 in their last five road games.
                                * Astros are 22-5 in Keuchel's last 27 home starts.
                                * Over is 12-3-1 in Royals last 16 games vs. a left-handed starter.
                                * Royals are 0-4 in their last four games following an off day.

Toronto Blue Jays at Texas Rangers (+120, 9.5)

The Toronto Blue Jays owned the best offense in baseball during the regular season and boasted a starting staff with three of the four best ERAs in the American League following the All-Star break, but none of that is helping much in the American League Division Series. The Blue Jays will try to avoid being swept out of the AL Division Series when they visit the red-hot Texas Rangers for Game 3 on Sunday.

The Rangers beat David Price in Game 1 on Thursday and outlasted Toronto in 14 innings on Friday to take Game 2, putting themselves in position to advance to the ALCS one season after going 67-95. The Blue Jays are trying to turn the rare feat of winning a best-of-five series after dropping the first two games at home, and they were just 40-41 on the road during the regular season. “Sure, it won't be easy, they got a great team over there,” Toronto manager John Gibbons told reporters. “They outplayed us both games.” The Blue Jays will turn to Marco Estrada, who owned the second-best ERA in the AL after the All-Star break behind Price, for Game 3 while Texas goes with the hot hand in lefty Martin Perez.

                                TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Marco Estrada (13-8, 3.13 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Martin Perez (3-6, 4.46)

Estrada’s 2.78 ERA after the All-Star break ranked second and his 0.91 WHIP paced all AL starters. The 32-year-old gets in trouble occasionally by giving up home runs – 13 in his final 10 starts – but is confident he can continue a stretch that saw him allow three earned runs or fewer in 12 of his final 13 outings. “I'm going to give it my all no matter what,” Estrada told reporters. “Like I said, if we were up 2-0 or down 0-2, like we are, it's the same mentality for me.”

Perez gets the nod over veterans Colby Lewis and Derek Holland due to his consistency down the stretch and a final two starts in which he allowed one earned run in 13 innings. The 24-year-old Venezuelan posted a 3.38 ERA over his final 11 starts and surrendered three or fewer earned runs in 11 of his 14 starts in 2015. Perez is facing the Blue Jays for the first time in his career while making his first career postseason appearance.

                                TRENDS:

                                * Blue Jays are 8-2 in the last 10 meetings in Texas.
                                * Under is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings in Texas.
                                * Under is 7-0 in Perez's last seven Sunday starts.
                                * Over is 7-1-4 in Blue Jays last 12 overall.
