Edmonton (9-4) @ Winnipeg (4-9)-- Eskimos (-5.5) crushed Winnipeg 32-3 at home back in Week 5, its fifth straight series win, with four of five wins by 18+ points (under 4-1). Edmonton won its last three games, is 3-3 SU on road, 1-2 as road favorite, with wins by 11-3-7 points. Eskimos won last two visits here, 35-27ot/26-3. Winnipeg lost six of its last seven games but covered two of last three; they're 3-4 SU at home, 2-2 as home underdogs. Under is 8-2-1 in last 11 Blue Bomber games, 3-1 in last four Edmonton games.

Saskatchewan (2-11) @ BCLions (4-8)-- Lions beat Saskatchewan by FG on consecutive weekends in Weeks 3-4, after Roughriders had won four of previous five meetings. Riders won two of last three in Vancouver but are 0-5 on road this year (1-2-1 as road underdogs), losing away games by 3-25-4-22-15 points. Lions lost last three games, allowing 31.3 ppg; they're 0-5-1 vs spread when favored this season, 0-3-1 at home. BC is 2-3 SU at home, with both wins by a FG. Over is 3-2 in BC home tilts, 5-2 in last seven Saskatchewan games.

Game Overview

Edmonton remains one game off the pace in the West following its win against the Lions, which was its third in a row SU. The Eskimos continue to boast the stingiest defense in the CFL in points allowed (18.3) and their offense is putting up an average of 25.1 points a game. Wide Receiver Derel Walker pulled-in eight receptions for 121 yards and a score in last week’s win.

The Blue Bombers have posted just one SU victory in their last seven games, but they have covered ATS in two of their last three outings. The total has gone OVER in three of their last four games while giving-up an average of 26 points even with a 22-7 Week 12 win against Saskatchewan included in this same stretch. Winnipeg is 3-6-2 ATS in its last 11 home games.

Edmonton is 5-12 SU in its last 17 road games against Winnipeg and the total has stayed UNDER in 12 of the last 17 meetings here.

Game Overview

Saskatchewan has just two SU wins all season long; however it comes into this West Division rivalry 2-2 both SU and ATS in its last four games. Kevin Glenn completed just 45.2 of his 31 attempts in Sunday’s win for 212 yards and a score, but Jerome Messam did a good job running the ball with 111 yards rushing and a score on 15 attempts.

The Lions have just one SU win in their last six games, but they are 3-1 ATS in their last four contests. Jonathon Jennings did a good job throwing the ball in the loss to Edmonton last week with 281 yards passing and two touchdown throws, but BC’s ground game went nowhere with just 37 total rushing yards on 17 carries.

Betting Trends

BC won two previous meetings this season both SU and ATS. It is now 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings overall and 5-2 ATS in its last seven home games against the Roughriders. The total has stayed UNDER in six of the last seven meetings in BC.

At the Gate - Saturday

October 3, 2015

It is Super Saturday at Belmont Park, with six graded stakes and four are Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” races.

As of early this morning, the main track was listed as muddy and races 2 and 10 have been taken off the turf. It looks as if the rain has passed, but we will have windy conditions.

At Keeneland there are showers forecast for the afternoon. Yesterday saw sloppy conditions and the turf was soft.

The Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) and Breeders’ Futurity (G1) from Keeneland and the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) from Belmont Park will be broadcast live on NBC during a one-hour telecast at 5:00 ET.

In addition to all of the stakes action being prep races for the Breeders’ Cup, we have two races that will give us an early look at Kentucky Derby (G1) contenders for next spring. The Breeders’ Futurity and the Champagne (G1) from Belmont Park are key Derby preps. Both are included below as my featured races of the day.

Here is today’s opener from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:

Analysis: Party Barn makes his debut for the McLaughlin barn that is 26% winners with first time starters. The colt has quite the pedigree, by Bernardini out of the stakes winner Hystericalady ($2.39 million) who has dropped a pair of runners with one winner. Solid works for a hot barn and this guy has a really strong off track pedigree.

River Dell made a good late rally to finish in the runner up spot for the Albertrani barn that does not win first out that often and is another barn that has been on a nice roll at the meet. He gets an extra half furlong and he has a solid off track pedigree, out of a Carson City mare.

Analysis: Sheikh of Sheikhs took the field gate to wire to break his maiden in his debut going six furlongs on the main track at Saratoga. The $330,000 purchase has a solid off track pedigree, by Discreetly Mine out of a stakes placed Pioneering mare that has dropped three other winners, top earner stakes winner Conquest Two Step ($339,408).

Rated R Superstar draws the rail after having an outside post last out in the Iroquois. He raced near the back of the pack, made a good middle move and could not get by the winner late in a runner up finish. It was his first start going long after breaking his maiden two back at Ellis Park by five lengths. Borel sticks for the McPeek barn that won this race in 2009 with Noble's Promise. A decent off track pedigree and this guy offers decent value if he goes off near his 6-1 morning line.

Exaggerator is one of two graded stakes winners in the field, taking the Saratoga Special (G2) last out in his first start against winners. He is going two turns for the first time here but has plenty of pedigree, by Curlin out of a Vindication mare. The colt has one of the strongest off track pedigrees in the field.

Analysis: Sail Ahoy faces winners for the first time here for the Shug barn after the colt made a good late rally to get up late and break his maiden going a mile here. The barn brings them along slower than most and this guy still appears to have a ton of upside. He will benefit if the rains come as he is bred top and bottom to relish a wet track. He is by Bernardini out of a Seeking the Gold mare that has dropped six winners including a pair of stakes winners, Point of Entry ($2.49 million) and Pine Island ($666,800).

Ready Dancer broke his maiden last out in his third career start and will be stretching out beyond six panels for the first time. The Pletcher barn has won the last three editions of this race and six of the last 11. The $225,000 Keeneland purchase is out of the stakes winner Sweettrickydancer ($197,070) who has dropped stakes winner Middie ($320,982).

Ralis tracked the early pace and drew away to win the Hopeful (G1) last out by 5 3/4 lengths. The colt has come up short in a runner up finish two back in the Cal bred Graduation at Del Mar going 5 1/2 furlongs. The extra furlong here should not pose a problem, but his price may end up on the light side.

Updated Breeders' Cup Odds

October 1, 2015

Despite coming up short to win the Travers Stakes at Saratoga, Triple Crown winner American Pharoah is still listed as the top betting choice to win the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Classic.

The event takes place at the end of October from Keeneland and bettors can start placing early wagers on fixed odds at Sportsbook.ag.

American Pharoah has odds listed at 7/5 (Bet $100 to win $140) to capture the main event. AP hasn't run since finishing second in the Travers Stakes this past August from Saratoga.

Beholder, a 4/1 betting choice, is considered a strong threat to win this year's Classic. Jockey Gary Stevens rode Beholder to her sixth straight victory on Sept. 26 in the Grade 1 Zenyatta Stakes from Santa Anita.

In her previous start, Beholder won the $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar, beating colts by 8 1/4 lengths. She has won 15 of 20 career starts, including 11 of 12 at Santa Anita.

Keen Ice, who just beat American Pharoah in the Travers, is listed as an 8/1 betting choice.
