    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Ravens 23, Steelers 20 OT-- Pitt is on its third kicker of year already; am guessing next week it'll be #4- they also fell short on two 4th down plays in OT.

-- Cincinnati 34, Miami 23-- Bearcats had harder time with Miami of Ohio.

-- Andrew Luck has a bum shoulder, may not play against the Jaguars Sunday.

-- Texas Rangers are in the playoffs; they're 41-20 in their last 61 games.

-- Michigan-Maryland was moved up to noon Saturday because of the bad weather hitting the Atlantic coast this weekend.

-- Get well soon Steve Kerr; Warriors coach is on leave of absence after he had an operation on his back. Luke Walton is the interim coach.

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend.......

    13) Astros lead Angels/Twins by game each for the last playoff spot; Houston is in Arizona this weekend, Angels are in Texas, Twins are hosting Kansas City.

    12) Jets-Dolphins play at 9:30am ET Sunday; I figure Fresno St-San Diego St game will end around 2am Saturday night; when is a guy supposed to sleep?

    11) Cruddy weather is expected up and down the Atlantic seaboard this weekend; not sure if Alabama-Georgia and Notre Dame-Clemson will be affected. Crimson Tide is an underdog for the first time since 2009, 73 games ago.

    10) Raiders snapped an 11-game road losing streak last week; now they're going for two in row on road against Chicago and Jimmy Clausen (1-11 as an NFL starter).

    9) Total in Baylor-Texas Tech game is 90.5, highest total ever; average total in last five series games is 95.8. Don't these teams recruit defensive players?

    8) Rams KO'd the Arizona starting QB in both meetings this year; I'm expecting lot of chippiness Sunday. St Louis needs a win, but Arizona is a well-balanced team, and a 1-4 start is a real possibility for the Rams, with the Packers on deck next week.

    7) Oregon has treated Colorado like a pinata since Buffaloes joined the Pac-12, but the Ducks got pounded at home by Utah last week and have a QB controversy. This is not going to be an easy game in Boulder-- the Buffs are improvng.

    6) Andrew Luck has a bum shoulder and may not play Sunday; Tim Hasselbeck is his backup-- he is 80-72 as an NFL starter, but his last start was in 2012.

    5) Ole Miss visits Florida, a week after the Gators stole a game from Tennessee; Jim Kelly's nephew is the Rebels' QB- they'll be aggressive on offense. Florida gets their backup QB back from suspension; curious to see if they play him at all.

    4) Giants are getting a TD in Buffalo, as they actually play a game in New York State for first time since 2007. Giants led by double digits in fourth quarter in both losses; tis could be a really good game.

    3) Arkansas-Tennessee is battle of embattled coaches; Bielema has lost 13 games in row that were decided by seven or less points. Butch Jones' game maagement has been likened to Charlie Brown's ability to kick a football when Lucy is holding for him.

    2) West Virginia's improved defense gets a stern test at Oklahoma, which has beaten Mountaineers three years in row. Sooners play rival Texas next week; they better not be looking past this opponent, because West Virginia is better than they have been.

    1) Tampa Bay has lost ten home games in a row; trap game for 3-0 Carolina, which won six of its last eight games against the Bucs.

          Friday, October 2

Pitcher change announced - Mark Buehrle, Toronto

Tampa Bay vs. Toronto on October 02 at 7:10 PM. Previous Starter: David Price.

Home field at stake in Mets' final series

PHILADELPHIA -- It turns out that the New York Mets' season-ending series against the Washington Nationals will mean something after all.

The Mets clinched the National League East last Saturday at the expense of the underachieving Nationals. They are, however, in a virtual tie with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the battle for home-field advantage in their Division Series after being swept in a three-game series by the downtrodden Philadelphia Phillies.

MLB roundup: Rangers, Yanks clinch playoff berths

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Adrian Beltre hit a three-run double, and the Texas Rangers guaranteed themselves a postseason berth by beating the Los Angeles Angels 5-3 Thursday at Globe Life Park.

Texas can do no worse than a wild card after its third consecutive win. The Rangers are three games up on Houston in the American League West with three games left in the regular season. The Astros begin a three-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday.

Should the Rangers lose the last three games of their four-game series with the Angels coupled with a Houston sweep, a one-game playoff Monday would determine the AL West champion and the wild card. Texas needs one win (or Astros loss) to clinch its sixth division title.

The Angels, last year's West champion, were eliminated from the division race, but are alive for a playoff berth. Los Angeles and Minnesota are 83-76, one game back of Houston for the second wild card.

          Yankees 4, Red Sox 1

NEW YORK -- Carlos Beltran, Greg Bird and Rob Refsnyder hit solo home runs, and CC Sabathia pitched five innings as New York clinched a postseason berth with a victory over Boston.

The Yankees sealed their first playoff appearance since 2012, when they won their last AL East title. New York needs one more win -- or one more loss by the Houston Astros -- to secure home field for Tuesday's American League wild-card game.

Beltran hit his 19th home run in the second off Rich Hill (2-1), and Bird added some breathing room by hitting his 11th with one out in the seventh off Jean Machi. In the eighth, Refsnyder drove a first-pitch fastball from Heath Hembree over the left-center-field fence.

          Dodgers 3, Giants 2

SAN FRANCISCO -- Los Angeles moved into a tie with the New York Mets in the overall National League standings, riding Brett Anderson's strong pitching to a victory over San Francisco.

Anderson (10-9) fired 7 2/3 innings of two-run ball. Giants right-hander Tim Hudson (8-9) allowed three runs in 2 1/3 innings in the final start of his career.

The Dodgers and Mets will meet in an NL Division Series next week. The team with the better regular-season record will gain home-field advantage, and the Mets hold the tiebreaker.

          Phillies 3, Mets 0

PHILADELPHIA -- Jerad Eickhoff combined with two relievers on a six-hit shutout as Philadelphia beat New York to complete a sweep of the three-game series.

Darin Ruf and Andres Blanco homered for the Phillies, who have won four straight.

Eickhoff, facing a lineup of Mets reserves, went seven innings and allowed four hits. The rookie, struck out 10 for the second straight game and walked one. He also became the first Phillies rookie to work seven innings or more and allow two earned runs or fewer in four straight starts since Ben Rivera in 1992.

          Cubs 5, Reds 3

CINCINNATI -- Austin Jackson homered and Jason Hammel pitched five shutout innings, lifting Chicago past Cincinnati.

Chicago won its fifth consecutive game to pull within two games of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the battle for home field in the National League wild-card game.

Cincinnati lost its 12th straight, the franchise's longest streak since 1993.

          Orioles 6, Blue Jays 4

BALTIMORE -- Manny Machado homered twice and stole two bases as Baltimore outlasted a long rain delay and Toronto to post a victory.

The starting time was moved from 7:05 p.m. ET to 12:05 p.m. because of concerns about Hurricane Joaquin. Still, the rains came, got harder throughout the first inning, and a three-hour, 25-minute delay ensued after the inning ended.

Machado hit a two-run homer in the first inning and added a solo shot in the sixth, finishing 3-for-4.

          Royals 6, White Sox 4

CHICAGO -- Kansas City picked up its second win in a row by beating Chicago, but the Royals had two more key players leave early with injuries.

A day after Lorenzo Cain was hurt fouling a ball off his right knee, Kendrys Morales and Salvador Perez left this game. Morales experienced tightness in his left quadriceps in the fifth inning, after running first to third on Perez's double, and Perez left in the eighth with swelling in his right thumb.

No prognosis was immediately given by the Royals. Cain, who didn't play, is day-to-day with a right knee contusion.

          Rays 4, Marlins 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Evan Longoria had a solo home run and an RBI double as Tampa Bay finished off a three-game sweep of Miami.

It was a wildly inefficient victory for Tampa Bay, which had 16 hits and stranded 11 runners in the first seven innings. The Rays got a strong start from Jake Odorizzi (9-9), who gave up four hits in seven innings, striking out seven.

Brad Boxberger pitched a perfect ninth for his 41st save, taking over the American League lead from Huston Street.

          Padres 3, Brewers 1

SAN DIEGO -- Yangervis Solarte hit a two-run homer, and Ian Kennedy snapped a personal four-game losing streak as San Diego defeated Milwaukee.

Kennedy (9-15) allowed one run on five hits with 11 strikeouts over six innings for his first win since Aug. 22. Craig Kimbrel picked up his 39th save as the Padres bullpen worked a seventh consecutive scoreless game covering 22 2/3 innings.

Kennedy and three relievers combined for 16 strikeouts while allowing seven hits and no walks.

          Nationals 3, Braves 0

ATLANTA -- Stephen Strasburg pitched six scoreless innings in his final start of the season, helping Washington beat Atlanta.

The win allowed the Nationals to salvage one game of the three-game series. Washington won the season series against the Braves 14-5.

Strasburg (11-7) allowed six hits and one walk while striking out seven. His streak of double-digit strikeout games ended at four.

          Twins 4, Indians 2

CLEVELAND -- After giving up the lead late, Minnesota rallied to score two unearned runs in the ninth inning to beat Cleveland.

With one out in the top of the ninth, Trevor Plouffe reached first on an error by second baseman Jose Ramirez. Eduardo Nunez, pinch-running for Plouffe, went to third on a single by Eddie Rosario off right-hander Cody Allen (2-5). Rosario advanced to second on the throw to third.

Nunez scored and Rosario went to third on a wild pitch by Allen. Right fielder Torii Hunter's sacrifice fly drove in Rosario with an insurance run.

          Diamondbacks 8, Rockies 6

PHOENIX -- Welington Castillo doubled and drove in three runs, and rookie Socrates Brito had three hits and scored twice in Arizona's victory over Colorado.

Castillo's two-run double in a four-run seventh inning put Arizona ahead for good in a seesaw game in which they lost David Peralta to a wrist injury in the fourth inning.

Peralta caught his glove in the turf and his wrist bent back on a sliding attempt to catch Rafael Ynoa's liner to short left field. The Diamondbacks did not characterize the injury but said X-rays were negative.

                    Friday, October 2

Wet, windy conditions at Camden Yards Friday

According to weather forecasts, rain could wash out Friday's game between the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees at Camden Yards as there is a 99 percent chance of rain expected to fall in Baltimore.

Furthermore, wind will be blowing in from center field at around 19 miles per hour to add to the hectic weather.

Luis Severino and Wei-Yin Chen are probable starters for New York and Baltimore respectively should the game go ahead as scheduled.

Road teams cashing tickets in Barksdale's games

Visiting teams have gone 6-0 in the last six games that umpire Lance Barksdale has worked behind home plate. Barksdale is scheduled to work home plate in Arlington when the Texas Rangers host the Los Angeles Angels Friday evening.

In spite of the winning streak from the road team, home teams still have a 15-13 season-to-date edge in Barksdale's games this season.

Jered Weaver is expected to start for the visitors while Martin Perez is scheduled to get the ball for the Rangers (-120).

MLB betting cheat sheet: Wild Wild West
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston is just a game up on Minnesota and LA, and the Astros wrap up the season on the road at Arizona.

                      Wild Wild West

The Yankees have already clinched a Wild Card berth in the American League, but the final playoff spot is still up for grabs. Houston is just a game up on Minnesota and LA, and the Astros wrap up the season on the road at Arizona. The Angels have their work cut out for them as well, finishing the year with a four game series in Texas. The Rangers clinched a playoff spot by winning Game 1, and they can clinch the division with a win in Game 2 on Friday. The Twins are hosting the Royals, who still have plenty to play for. Kansas City is tied with Toronto for the league's best record.

                      Putting on a Brave face

The Braves will wrap up the season at home against St. Louis, and despite a challenging season Atlanta can still finish with a winning record at home. They hand the ball to ace Julio Teheran in Game 1, and the right-hander has allowed two runs or less in six straight starts. He's 7-2 with a 3.06 ERA in 16 starts at home in 2015. St. Louis will likely be resting players, as they've already clinched home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

                      Miller Time?

If it wasn't for bad luck, Shelby Miller wouldn't have any luck at all. He might go down as the most unlucky pitcher of all time. He makes his final start of the season at home against the Cardinals, looking for his first win since he tossed a complete game two-hit shutout against Miami on May 17. He's 2-9 at home this season despite a 2.63 ERA in 16 starts. You have to think he's due for a win here at home versus the Cardinals backups in a meaningless game.

                      Hitting Notes

                      * There are currently eight players in the major leagues with 40 or more home runs in 2015. That's the most since 2006, the tail end of the Steroid Era. Albert Pujols and JD Martinez are well within striking distance with three games to play, sitting on 39 and 38 respectively.

                      * The Dodgers have a pair of formidable aces, but they head into the post season with a struggling offense. Only cellar dwellers Miami and Atlanta have scored fewer runs in the second half of the season that LA.

                      Pitching Notes

                      * Jered Weaver will start for the Angels in a must win game in Texas on Friday night, but he's been god awful on the road this season. Weaver is 3-10 with a 6.33 ERA in 14 starts away from home this season, and he was pulled from his last start after five innings because of shoulder soreness.

                      * Dallas Keuchel will have a chance to become the second 20 game winner of 2015 when he starts at Arizona Friday. It looks like a tough spot for Keuchel though, as he's 4-8 with a 3.82 ERA in 14 starts away from home. He was torched for nine runs on 11 hits over just 4 2/3 innings in a loss to Texas in his last road outing.

                      Totals Streak

The Rangers won Game 1 of this series versus LA by a score of 5-3, falling just short of the total. Low scoring games have been few and far between for the Rangers, who have gone over at a rate of 12-4-2 in their last 18 overall. They've also gone over at a rate of 6-1-1 in their last eight home meetings with LA.

                      Injury Notes

                      * Troy Tulowitzki is set to return to the Blue Jays lineup this weekend after missing the last three weeks with a shoulder injury.

                      * The Angels lost their closer Houston Street for the remainder of the season to a groin injury, and their bullpen has already cost them valuable points since his absence.

                      Weather Notes

                      * The Yankees' visit to Baltimore, the Nationals' date with the Mets and the Marlins trip to Philadelphia could all be impacted by rain Friday evening.

                      * Wind is expected to blow in from left field at around 19 miles per hour when the White Sox host the Detroit Tigers at U.S. Cellular Field Saturday evening.

                      Umpire Notes

                      * The road team is 6-0 in umpire Lance Barksdale's previous six games working behind home plate. He'll be calling balls and strikes in Texas when the Rangers host the Angels Friday evening.
