    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- A's 8, Angels 7-- Damaging loss for Halos, who finish season against Rangers.

-- Texas Tech-Baylor total is 90.5, highest-ever listed total. Averaged total in last five series games in 95.8.

-- Congrats to the Blue Jays on their first AL East title since 1993.

-- Northwestern has a walk-on basketball player named Charlie Hall; his mother is Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who played Elaine on Seinfeld.

-- Georgia is only SEC team without a full-sized indoor practice field; that means even Vanderbilt has one.

-- Baseball games in Philly/Baltimore today have been moved up to noon starts, to beat bad weather expected to pound the Atlantic seaboard this weekend.

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Looking at each NFC team......

Cardinals-- Rams knocked out Arizona's starting QB in both meetings LY; Arizona is off to great start, scoring three defensive TDs in last two games, while also returning a kick for TD. Redbirds have 14 TDs on 29 drives, eight of which were 75+ yards long.

Falcons-- Off to 3-0 start despite giving up 20+ points in all three games; they trailed all three games in 4th quarter, were down by double digits twice. Julio Jones caught 34 passes already, the most of any player ever after three games- Ryan targeted him 20 times last week (20!!!!) and he caught 12 of them.

Panthers-- Another 3-0 team; they've outrushed opponents by 56.3 ypg; Newton is solid QB- they've turned ball over only twice (+4), converted 17-44 on 3rd down and they really don't have great WR (Ginn has 10 catches for 188 yards, but 22 targets).

Bears- NFL teams don't often sell off players during season, but Chicago has already dealt two defensive guys and Cutler is hurt, leaving Clausen (1-11 as NFL starter) as the #1 QB for time being. Not often a team punts every time they have ball, like Bears did last week in Seattle.

Cowboys-- Weeden is now 5-17 as NFL starter; Dallas gained 295 yards in first half last week, only 52 in second half- they converted only 5-18 on third down last couple games. Falcons ran ball for 158 yards LW; Dallas allowed only 56 rushing yards total in first two games.

Lions-- Detroit won NFL titles in 1952-53-57; they've won one playoff game in 57 years since then, and that was in 1991. For some reason they hired Jim Caldwell as coach and now they're 0-3, scoring total of 28 points in last two games. Not good.

Packers-- I laugh that Aaron Rodgers was 24th player taken in 2005 draft; Redskins took Jason Campbell with next pick, said they would've taken him even if Rodgers was available, which explains why some teams never win. Rodgers sat and watched Favre for few years; there is something to be said for that way of developing a QB.

Vikings-- Ran ball for 362 yards in last two games, good sign; they won field position by 25-16 yards last two games, rare to see that two games in row, but they were lousy in only road game, so curious to see how they play in Denver this week. Vikings have been outscored 34-0 in last 2:00 of each half.

Giants-- Won field position by 11-9-20 yards in first three games, but blew big leads and lost first two; they're 14-10 as road underdogs since 2011, getting TD+ this week in Buffalo, which seems too high for me, but they've allowed 24 ppg despite having superior field position in all three games.

Saints-- Ownership of team is in flux because Mr Benson is in late 80s and his estate is being contested; not sure how that impacts Payton's job status if this season keeps unraveling. Brees could be back for Sunday night game with Dallas; they need a win.

Eagles-- Ran ball for 70 yards in first two games, 123 in win last week, but they didn't score in second half either, and threw for only 108 yards. Eagles are 12-5 under Kelly in games with spread of 3 or less; they're 7-12 as road favorites since 2010. Average total in last five Eagle-Redskin games is 53.8.

Rams-- Good defense, good special teams, horrendous offense because they seem to be unable to develop a possession receiver who can move chains. Converted 4 of 22 third downs in last two games; they've been in red zone once. They seem to want to use their tight ends, but they don't catch the ball very well.

49ers-- Outscored 90-25 in last two games, now Aaron Rodgers comes back to Bay Area this week, while Jim Harbaugh has Michigan in top 25. Kaepernick has a 26-16 record as NFL QB, but now that team has regressed, can he pass well enough to win?

Seahawks-- Chancellor came back and Seattle shut Bears out but that might be more because Clausen played QB for Chicago. Seahawks are 22-9 as home favorites since 2009, since '07, they're 18-6 vs spread in home division games, 24-15 outside divison. Graham caught TD pass LW, maybe thats a good sign their offense is evolving.

Buccaneers-- Not easy breaking in rookie QB with two rookies on OL; they're 9-40 on third down, have only three TDs on eight red zone drives. Since '08, Buccaneers are 14-32-2 vs spread at home. Under is 21-14 in their last 35 games, 14-10-1 in last 25 home games.

Redskins-- Ran ball for 343 yards in first two games, only 88 in loss to Giants; they are just 6-12 vs spread in last 18 home games, 5-10 in last 15 games where spread was 3 or less points. They averaged over 8 ypa in both games vs Eagles LY, interested to see if they throw it well against them Sunday.

MLB roundup: Cards, Jays win division titles

PITTSBURGH -- The St. Louis Cardinals clinched their third National League Central title in a row Wednesday with an 11-1 rout of the Pittsburgh Pirates as Jason Heyward had a grand slam and Tyler Lyons pitched seven scoreless innings in the second game of a day-night doubleheader.

The Pirates are attempting to finish second to the Cardinals for the third consecutive year despite having the second-most wins in the major leagues.

Pittsburgh will play in the one-game NL wild-card playoff for a third straight year, meeting the Chicago Cubs on Oct. 7.

The Cardinals will meet the wild-card winner in the best-of-five National League Division Series, which will open Oct. 9 at St. Louis.

Pittsburgh won the first game, 8-2.

Blue Jays 15, Orioles 2; Orioles 8, Blue Jays 1

BALTIMORE -- Edwin Encarnacion, Jose Bautista and Justin Smoak homered, and Toronto beat Baltimore in the first game of a doubleheader to clinch the American League East title.

Toronto is headed to the playoffs for the first time in 22 years.

In the nightcap, Chris Davis led a four-home run attack with two solo shots, and starter Kevin Gausman shut down the Blue Jays for eight innings as the Orioles salvaged a split.

          Red Sox 9, Yankees 5 (11 innings)

NEW YORK -- Deven Marrero drove in the go-ahead run with two outs in the 11th inning, and Boston prevented New York from clinching a postseason spot.

The Red Sox had runners on first and third when Marrero slapped a single up the middle on the first pitch he saw from Andrew Bailey (0-1).

After Bailey was replaced by struggling left-hander Chasen Shreve, Jackie Bradley Jr. drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt. Mookie Betts followed with a two-run homer, four innings after he blasted a game-tying home run off Dellin Betances.

          Astros 7, Mariners 6

SEATTLE -- Colby Rasmus delivered a go-ahead RBI single in the seventh inning, and Houston overcame a rough outing from Scott Kazmir to beat Seattle.

Houston kept its slim hopes of winning the American League West title alive while moving past the Los Angeles Angels in the AL wild-card standings. The Astros are a half-game ahead of Los Angeles, which opens a four-game series with Texas on Thursday while Houston takes its final off day.

In the seventh, Rasmus followed a one-out triple by designated hitter Evan Gattis with a hit to left field off Danny Farquhar (1-7), giving the Astros a 7-6 lead. Houston rallied back from a 6-3 deficit on first baseman Chris Carter's three-run homer in the sixth.

          Royals 5, White Sox 3 (10 innings)

CHICAGO -- Thanks to a two-run homer in the 10th inning by Eric Hosmer, Kansas City got the win it needed to secure home-field advantage in the American League Division Series.

Unfortunately for the Royals, the night also included a potentially significant loss.

Center fielder Lorenzo Cain fouled a ball hard off his right knee during the seventh inning and left the game. Cain, who hits third, has a contusion on his right knee and is day-to-day.

          Rangers 6, Tigers 2

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Left fielder Mike Napoli's two-run home run keyed a four-run outburst with two outs in the third inning, and Texas moved a step closer to AL West Division title with a victory over Detroit.

Napoli's blast to left was one of three home runs hit by Texas. Adrian Beltre hit his 17th home run, a two-run shot that tied the game in the first, and Robinson Chirinos hit a tiebreaking solo homer to start the game-winning rally in the third.

Yovani Gallardo (13-11) threw 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball, and four Rangers relievers combined for 3 2/3 scoreless innings.

          Athletics 8, Angels 7

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Oakland rallied for four runs in the seventh inning and cooled off surging Los Angeles.

The Angels made things interesting when Kole Calhoun homered to lead off the ninth inning.

Mike Trout walked, but Albert Pujols popped out and C.J. Cron lined out. David Freese sent Trout to third with a single, but pinch hitter Collin Cowgill grounded out to end it.

          Cubs 10, Reds 3

CINCINNATI -- Jon Lester retired the final 20 batters he faced and Austin Jackson had a career-high five RBIs for Chicago.

Lester allowed one runner over his final seven innings. He struck out nine and didn't walk as he lowered his ERA to 3.34.

Jackson had a pair of RBI doubles and Starlin Castro had four hits, including a homer.

          Phillies 7, Mets 5

PHILADELPHIA -- A wild pitch by New York reliever Carlos Torres brought home the go-ahead run in a three-run sixth inning, and Philadelphia rallied for a win in a game that lasted three hours, 59 minutes.

Daniel Murphy and Michael Conforto homered in a five-run first inning for the Mets, who dropped their second straight.

Phillies reliever Justin De Fratus struck Mets center fielder Yoenis Cespedes on the left hand with a pitch in the third inning. Cespedes left the game, but X-rays were negative. He was diagnosed with contusions of the middle and ring fingers.

          Twins 7, Indians 1; Indians 10, Twins 2

CLEVELAND -- Cody Anderson pitched seven scoreless innings on two hits, and Francisco Lindor and Jose Ramirez homered as Cleveland won the second game of a doubleheader.

Minnesota won the first game as Joe Mauer and Byron Buxton homered, and Torii Hunter drove in three runs in support of right-hander Kyle Gibson.

Gibson pitched six scoreless innings allowing four hits while matching his career high with nine strikeouts.

          Rays 6, Marlins 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Grady Sizemore hit a three-run double and Tampa Bay Rays earned the win.

Sizemore, who struck out with the bases loaded in the fourth, got another shot in the fifth and broke open a close game, chasing Jarred Cosart. Sizemore is 8-for-15 during a six-game hitting streak, and he has nine RBIs in his past seven games.

          Braves 2, Nationals 0

ATLANTA -- Jordan Zimmermann had a quality start in what was likely his last game for Washington, but it wasn't good enough to get a victory.

Rookie Williams Perez pitched out of trouble during his six innings and Atlanta made a pair of early runs stand up against Zimmerman, who becomes a free agent after the season.

Perez had just one perfect inning, but he benefited from two double plays and the Nationals went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

          Giants 5, Dodgers 0

SAN FRANCISCO -- Los Angeles' first day as National League West champs was not a pleasant one, as the Dodgers were limited to two hits by San Francisco right-hander Mike Leake.

The loss cost the Dodgers a chance to tie the Mets in the NL's overall standings, which will determine the home-field advantage in the first-round playoff matchup between the first-place finishers in the NL West and East.

Leake threw his second complete game of the season. He walked three and struck out one while running his overall record to 11-10.

          Diamondbacks 3, Rockies 1

PHOENIX -- David Peralta had two hits and an RBI, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia singled in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning of Arizona's victory over Colorado.

Paul Goldschmidt doubled to open the sixth before Peralta walked and Saltalamacchia singled off right-hander Chad Bettis (8-6) to break a 1-1 tie.

Phil Gosselin singled and scored on Peralta's sacrifice fly in the seventh inning. Gosselin, who also had two hits, had a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

          Brewers 5, Padres 0

SAN DIEGO -- Zach Davies threw seven shutout innings as Milwaukee defeated San Diego. The right-hander allowed five hits and two walks while striking out six.

Hernan Perez and Martin Maldonado each had two RBIs for the Brewers.

San Diego's Andrew Cashner (6-16) worked five innings, surrendering five runs on nine hits and two walks. He struck out seven.

                    Inbound wind in Cleveland Thursday

According to weather forecasts, wind is expected to blow in from right field at around 21 miles per hour at Progressive Field when the Cleveland Indians host the Minnesota Twins Thursday evening.

Trevor Bauer is expected to get the start for the Indians (+100) while Tyler Duffy is probable to start for the visiting Twins (-108).

                    Mariners shut down Hernandez

SEATTLE -- Having already shut down 23-year-old top prospect Taijuan Walker and oft-injured southpaw James Paxton for the season, the Seattle Mariners made a move Wednesday to protect and even more important arm.

Manager Lloyd McClendon announced before Wednesday's game that right-handed ace Felix Hernandez was scratched from his expected Friday start because he is being shut down for the season.

Hernandez, 29, is healthy but has already thrown 201 2/3 innings. And the Mariners are eliminated from the playoffs -- again -- as Hernandez has yet to pitch a single postseason game over his 11-year career.

Indians shut down ailing OF Brantley

CLEVELAND -- Michael Brantley finished third in the voting for the American League Most Valuable Player Award in 2014. He was almost as good this year, which says a lot about Brantley as a player, considering he played most of the season with two sore shoulders and a sore back.

Brantley will play no more this season, however. Prior to the Indians' doubleheader split with the Twins on Wednesday, manager Terry Francona said Brantley will not play in any of the Indians' remaining games due to right shoulder inflammation. Brantley was given a cortisone shot in the shoulder on Wednesday.

Kemp hurts finger, first season with Padres over

SAN DIEGO -- Matt Kemp's first season with the Padres comes with a premature end.

Kemp won't play again this year after San Diego announced on Wednesday he has a strained and torn tendon in his right middle finger.

With a rest period of four-to-six weeks, Kemp is finished.

He takes with him a .265 average, 23 homers and 100 RBIs.

Brewers going for sixth-straight win over Padres

The Milwaukee Brewers have gone 5-0 in the previous five meetings with the San Diego Padres and will go for their sixth-straight when the two National League clubs finish up a three-game set at Petco Park Thursday evening.

Over the span of those five games, the Brew Crew have outscored the Friars 31-10, including a 5-0 shutout Wednesday evening.

Taylor Jungmann is expected to get the start for the Brewers (+117) while Ian Kennedy is probable to get the ball for the Padres (-127).
