    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Last 0-3 NFL team to make playoffs? '98 Bills, led by Doug Flutie.

-- Falcons converted 20 of 31 third plays in last two games, both on road.

-- Cubs have 13 walkoff wins, most in baseball; White Sox, Angels have 11.

-- Karl Malone's son is a backup offensive lineman at LSU.

-- Bears traded Jared Allen to Carolina, Jon Bostic to New England, getting draft pciks in return. Waving the white flag this early doesn't happy very often.

-- Cowboys had 295 total yards at halftime Sunday; they had 52 in second half.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but......

    13) Packers 38, Chiefs 28-- When the schedule comes out in May, you do not want to be playing the Packers in Green Bay- Aaron Rodgers just plays better there.

    12) When Chiefs-Packers met in Super Bowl I, 17 future Hall of Famers played in that game. It wasn't even called the Super Bowl at the time.

    11) Orioles snapped their scoreless streak at 29; longest scoring drought this year was a 35-inning skid by the Dodgers. All-time major league record is 48, set by the Cubs around a hundred years ago.

    10) Despite that, scoring in baseball has gone way up the last couple months; 2009 was last time teams scored as much as they have the last two months.

    9) NFL penalties are way up this year; reduction in offseason practice time is part of the problem. Teams are sloppier now because they practice less.

    8) Red Sox posted a video tribute to departing TV play-by-play guy Don Orsillo on the scoreboard at Fenway Sunday, but the weasels at NESN wouldn't show it on TV. A sign of how stupid a firing this is: Padres have already hooked Orsillo up as its new TV voice, good move by them.

    7) MAC football teams are 18-9 vs spread out of conference this year, 10-2 when playing against a Big 14 team, their regional big brothers.

    6) How did Bruce Arians almost not get an NFL head coaching gig? Guy is one of the best coaches in the league, but he was 60 before he got the Cardinals' job. The Steelers fired him as offensive coordinator in 2011- why?

    5) Steelers are 10-8 in last 18 games Ben Roethlisberger missed; 8-1 in non-division games, 2-7 against divisional rivals.

    4) Surprised to hear the Tigers are bringing manager Brad Ausmus back next year; they've had a dismal season, have a new GM, although he was promoted from within the organization. Tigers' veteran players must've spoken up for Ausmus.

    3) Serious question: Do baseball umpires have homes? They're on the road at least seven months every year, eight if they work the playoffs.

    2) Underrated pickup of trading deadline was Texas getting Cole Hamels from the Phillies; they've won his last eight starts. Rangers weren't that strong a contender when they made the trade, but they've got a two-game lead with six days left.

    1) Cardinals won 3-0 in Pittsburgh, despite walking ten batters. Pirates are the first team to get shut out while walking 10+ times since the Royals on April 26, 2007

NFL Opening Line Report: Steelers home underdogs without Big Ben

“I've been making the home team in this rivalry a one to 3-point favorite for as long as I can remember, but without Roethlisberger, that won't be the case here." - John Avello, Wynn

A key AFC North tilt kicks off Week 4 in the NFL, with Baltimore traveling to rival Pittsburgh to play under the Thursday night lights, with both teams reeling. The Ravens still haven’t cracked the win column SU or ATS, and the Steelers lost stud quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to a left knee injury Sunday.

Baltimore (0-3 SU and ATS), a 2.5-point home favorite against Cincinnati Sunday, rallied from a 14-0 deficit to take a 24-21 lead with four minutes left. But the Bengals then drove for a touchdown, handing the Ravens a 28-24 loss.

This week’s trip to Heinz Field marks Baltimore’s third road game of the season already, after the Ravens opened with losses at Denver and at Oakland in games that easily could have fallen in the Ravens’ favor.

The Steelers (2-1 SU, 3-0 ATS) escaped St. Louis with an ugly 12-6 victory Sunday as a 1.5-point road underdog, but Roethlisberger exited in the third quarter and left the stadium on crutches with an MCL sprain. He’s expected to miss four to six weeks.

John Lester, senior lines manager for Bookmaker.eu, made the Ravens a 2.5-point chalk.

“The loss of Roethlisberger is huge. He’s worth at least seven points to a spread because of the offense Pittsburgh runs and the fact that backup Michael Vick is a bottom-tier replacement,” Lester said. “If Big Ben isn’t available, and it doesn’t appear he will be, the offense will struggle. Prior to the injury, we were looking to make the home team between a six and 7-point favorite.”

Johnny Avello, executive director of race and sports for Wynn Las Vegas, said he’ll be adjusting from a long-held formula.

“I've been making the home team in this rivalry a one to 3-point favorite for as long as I can remember, but without Roethlisberger, that won't be the case here,” Avello told Covers. “The Ravens haven't played that poorly, they just haven't won, and they will be the road favorite for this game.”

Green Bay Packers at San Francisco 49ers (OTB)

Despite losing star wideout Jordy Nelson for the year in preseason play, the Packers (2-0 SU and ATS) didn’t miss a beat in the first two weeks. Green Bay won and cashed on the road against Chicago in Week 1, then dropped two-time defending NFC champion Seattle 27-17 in Week 2 as a 3.5-point home fave.

The Packers close out the NFL’s Week 3 slate by hosting Kansas City Monday night.

San Francisco (1-2 SU and ATS) shed its head coach and some key players between last year and the 2015 season, and is still trying to sort things out. On Sunday at Arizona, the 49ers got hammered 47-7 as a 7-point pup.

“The Niners haven't shown a whole lot to get excited about, and Colin Kaepernick looked like a rookie against the Cardinals on Sunday,” Avello said. “In the past, I would say that maybe their defense might slow Aaron Rodgers down, but then again, what defense?

With Green Bay still to play tonight, there’s no line on the game yet, but all things being equal, Lester said the Packers will probably be touchdown favorites.

“As long as no one significant gets injured for Green Bay on Monday – and I certainly hope that isn’t the case, the way quarterbacks are dropping in this league – we will look to make the Packers seven or 8-point favorites,” Lester said. “The Niners aren’t as bad as they’ve looked the last two weeks, but they are up against a juggernaut here.”

St. Louis Rams at Arizona Cardinals (-6.5)

With a healthy Carson Palmer at quarterback, Arizona is rolling and continues to play well in its home dome. On Sunday, the Cardinals (3-0 SU and ATS) steamrolled San Francisco 47-7 laying seven points at home. Arizona is 15-3 SU and 13-5 ATS in its last 18 at home.

St. Louis (1-2 SU and ATS) opened the season with a home upset of Seattle, winning 34-31 as a 3.5-point pup, then was inexplicably pedestrian against a much weaker foe, losing 24-10 at Washington as a 3-point fave. The offensive inadequacies continued Sunday in a 12-6 home loss to Pittsburgh as a 1.5-point fave, despite the Steelers being without Ben Roethlisberger the last 20 minutes of the game.

“As I’ve said before, the Cardinals are very underrated, especially at home,” Lester said. “St. Louis is stuck in quicksand offensively, and that’s not where you want to be against this Arizona defense. I would’ve liked to make the Cards a bit higher favorite, but if this ends up being a defensive battle, we didn’t want to expose ourselves to the sharp dog bettors.”

Said Avello: “It appears that this might be an easy one for the Cards, and I'm not taking anything away from them, because they are a very good team. But the three clubs they've beaten have a combined total of one win,” Avello said. “The Rams are very familiar with the Phoenix surroundings, and this is a division game that will be sought out by a very desperate St. Louis team.”

Dallas Cowboys at New Orleans Saints (OTB)

The injury bug has bitten Dallas hard, as it lost all-world wideout Dez Bryant (broken foot) in Week 1 and standout QB Tony Romo (broken clavicle) in Week 2. The Cowboys (2-1 SU, 1-2 ATS) managed to win both games (1-1 ATS) and were poised to go to 3-0 when they took a 28-14 halftime lead Sunday against Atlanta. But the Cowboys didn’t score the rest of the way, losing 39-28 laying one point at home.

New Orleans’ precipitous fall continued Sunday in a 27-22 loss at Carolina as a 10-point dog. The Saints (0-3 SU, 1-2 ATS) were without Drew Brees (rotator cuff), and his status isn’t yet set for the Sunday night game.

For several years, the Saints were among the stoutest teams in the league at home, but they lost their home opener this year to Tampa Bay 26-19 as a healthy 9.5-point chalk and have now dumped six in a row SU and seven in row ATS at the Superdome.

“We’re going to wait to see what the status of Brees is before putting up a number,” Lester said. “He’s not as valuable as he used to be, but he would still impact a line at minimum four to five points. If Brees is out again, two backups squaring off under center complicates things a bit. If that is the case, we will likely open the Cowboys as short chalk.”

Avello noted that with no Romo and possibly no Brees, this game has lost a ton of allure for bettors.

“I don't believe that before the season started, any of us thought we would see a Brandon Weeden/Luke McCown matchup for this prime-time contest,” Avello said. “For sure we're seeing Weeden, and there's a slight chance that Brees will return. Although team recognition is there for bettors, I may leave work early next Sunday, because the action on this one may be light.

Cardinals' Molina will miss remainder of regular season

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina will miss the rest of the regular season because of a partially torn thumb ligament, and his availability for the postseason has yet to be determined.

Molina was examined by doctors Monday and told he was not ready to play, though they were encouraged that his strength and flexibility have improved. Molina suffered the injury on Sept. 20 when he tagged out the Chicago Cubs' Anthony Rizzo, who was attempting to score on a sacrifice fly.

The seven-time Gold Glove winner will be reexamined Sunday before the Cardinals play their final regular-season game against the Braves at Atlanta.

              Yankees' Tanaka will return Wednesday

NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees finally have an answer to when Masahiro Tanaka will make his next start after being sidelined with a Grade 1 right hamstring strain.

The answer to the highly anticipated question is Tanaka will start Wednesday's game against the Boston Red Sox.

Tanaka cleared all the necessary hurdles before Monday's series opener and by having him start Wednesday, it would give him five days' rest before any potential wild-card playoff game on Oct. 6.

The Cardinals increased their division lead to four games over the Pirates. Both teams have five games remaining and St. Louis can wrap up the title with a win Tuesday night in the second game of a three-game series.

Pirates closer Mark Melancon (3-2), who leads the major leagues with a franchise-record 51 saves, started the ninth and gave up a one-out single to third Matt Carpenter. Center fielder Jon Jay followed with a single to right and Carpenter continued home when right fielder Gregory Polanco bobbled the ball for an error.

Reynolds, the first baseman, followed with his 13th homer of the season, a drive into the right-field stands.

                  Giants 3, Dodgers 2 (12 innings)

SAN FRANCISCO -- Pinch-hitter Alejandro De Aza's sacrifice fly scored Marlon Byrd from third base in the bottom of the 12th inning night as San Francisco kept its slim playoff hopes alive by beating the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Right-hander Jake Peavy pitched seven strong innings and Trevor Brown had a two-run double as the Giants kept the Dodgers from clinching the National League West, trimming their lead to five games with six remaining.

                  Cubs 1, Royals 0 (11 innings)

CHICAGO -- Chris Denorfia led off the 11th inning with a first-pitch home run as the Chicago Cubs claimed a walk-off victory over Kansas City.

Denorfia's lead-off home run off right-handed reliever Miguel Almonte gave the Cubs their major league-leading 13th walk-off win of the season.

Almonte took the loss after entering in the 11th. Chicago right-handed reliever Fernando Rodney worked the top of the 11th for the win.

                  Twins 4, Indians 2

CLEVELAND -- Trevor Plouffe's two-run home run capped a three-run first inning as Minnesota beat Cleveland at Progressive Field.

The win keeps the Twins squarely in the hunt for the second wild card spot in the American League.

Left-hander Tommy Milone pitched into the sixth inning to get the win. He gave up two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Right-hander Kevin Jepsen pitched the ninth to pick up his 14th save.

                  Blue Jays 4, Orioles 3

BALTIMORE -- Justin Smoak drove in the tie-breaking run on a fielder's choice in the ninth as Toronto scored three runs in the final two innings and moved one step closer to the American League East title with a victory over Baltimore.

The Blue Jays are winners of five straight games and reduced their magic number to three.

                  Red Sox 5, Yankees 1

NEW YORK -- Travis Shaw and Jackie Bradley hit two-run home runs in consecutive innings off right-hander Ivan Nova as Boston prevented the New York Yankees from inching closer to clinching a postseason berth.

Left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez allowed one run and seven hits over six innings during his final start of the season. He became the first Boston rookie southpaw to win 10 games since John Curtis in 1972 and finished his rookie season at 121 2/3 innings.

                  Tigers 7, Rangers 4

ARLINGTON, Texas -- For the third consecutive day, Texas missed an opportunity to directly reduce its magic number to clinch the American League West. The latest setback came at the hands of lowly Detroit.

Starter Justin Verlander worked six solid innings and Tyler Collins added a three-run homer for the Tigers, who snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 73-83.

Texas starter Colby Lewis, seeking his 18th win, was shelled and couldn't get out of the fifth. Lewis lost for the first time in four outings.

                  Astros 3, Mariners 2

SEATTLE -- George Springer, Evan Gattis and Chris Cater all hit home runs to lift Houston to win against Seattle.

The Astros are now just 1 1/2 back of the division lead thanks to the Rangers' loss to the Tigers.

Carter's home run in the seventh inning broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Astros the lead for good. He sent the first pitch he saw from Danny Farquhar (1-6) deep down the left field line for his 23rd homer of the year.

                  Angels 5, Athletics 4

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- David Murphy's pinch-hit line-drive single to left field in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Los Angeles Angels to a win over Oakland at Angel Stadium.

C.J. Cron, who had three hits in the game, got the rally started in the ninth with a single to center off A's reliever Edward Mujica. Third baseman David Freese followed with a dribbler up the third-base line. Mujica fielded the ball cleanly but his throw hit Freese in the back for an error, pinch runner Collin Cowgill going to third and Freese taking second on the play.

After an intentional walk to left fielder Shane Victorino, A's manager Bob Melvin brought in lefty Fernando Abad to face Murphy.

                  Nationals 5, Reds 1

WASHINGTON -- Right-hander Max Scherzer took a no-hitter into the eighth inning as Washington ended the home portion of its season with a win over Cincinnati.

Scherzer did not allow a hit until Tucker Barnhart lined a clean single to left with one in the eighth. Later in the inning, Skip Schumaker had an RBI single to break up the shutout bid.

Scherzer, who struck out 10 batters and gave up two hits with three walks in eight innings and also had two hits at the plate, came within one out of a perfect game at home on June 20 against the Pittsburgh Pirates in a no-hitter.

Game of the Day: Cardinals at Pirates
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Cardinals can clinch their third consecutive division title with a win over the Pirates Tuesday night.

St. Louis Cardinals at Pittsburgh Pirates (-104, 7.5)

The St. Louis Cardinals can clinch their third consecutive National League Central title with a victory over the rival Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park on Tuesday. Matt Carpenter, who scored the eventual game-winning run in Monday's 3-0 triumph, is 19-for-52 (.365) with six homers, 11 runs scored and 10 RBIs in his last 13 games.

Carpenter scored on a single in the ninth inning by Jon Jay, who entered the game after rookie Stephen Piscotty (head contusion) was involved in a horrific outfield collision. While the Cardinals reside one victory shy of 100, the Pirates sit four games out of the division while holding a 3 1/2-game lead over the Chicago Cubs for the top wild card. Pittsburgh, which has lost nine of the 17 meetings with St. Louis this season, has dropped two in a row following an eight-game winning streak. Andrew McCutchen has struggled mightily to the tune of 4-for-25 (.160) in his last eight contests, but is 7-for-15 (.467) in his career versus Tuesday starter Michael Wacha.

                      TV:
7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), ROOT (Pittsburgh)

                      LINE HISTORY:
The Pirates opened as the slimest of favorites at -106 and the number has jumped between -113 and +104 since opening. The game is currently listed at a dead even -104.

                      INJURY REPORT:

Cardinals - RF S. Piscotty (out Tuesday, head), C Y. Molina (out for regular season, thumb), SP C. Martinez (out for season, shoulder), SP A. Wainwright (60-day DL, Achilles), RP J. Walden (60-day DL, bicep).

                      Pirates - 2B J. Kang (60-day DL, knee), 1B C. Hart (60-day DL, shoulder), RP D. Guerra (60-day DL, knee), RP C. Sadler (60-day DL, forearm), RF A. Lambo (60-day DL, foot).

                      WEATHER REPORT:
There is curently a 90 percent chance of rain showers expected around the start of gametime. Temperatures will be in the high 60s with a slight four mile per wind blowing in from left field.

                      UMPIRE REPORT:
Dan Iassogna will be the man calling balls and strikes for tonight's big game. The home team is 12-18, while the O/U is 13-16-1 in the 30 games Iassogna has officiated this season. The Pirates are 1-4 in their last five games with Iassogna behind home plate.

                      PITCHING MATCHUP:
Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (17-6, 3.15 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Charlie Morton (9-8, 4.54)

After a sizzling summer, Wacha has cooled down considerably by alternating wins and losses over his last four starts. The 19th overall pick of the 2012 draft, Wacha has allowed 15 earned runs in his last 20 frames and issued 14 walks in that span. Wacha, however, has handcuffed Pittsburgh in his career, permitting four earned runs in 18 2/3 innings versus the Pirates this season and just seven in 32 2/3 frames en route to a 3-0 career mark.

While Wacha has dominated the Pirates, Morton has endured constant nightmarish performances en route to a 2-11 career mark versus St. Louis while allowing the club to bat .305 against him. The 31-year-old is 1-4 in his last six outings overall and escaped with a no-decision despite permitting six runs on 10 hits - including two homers - in 4 1/3 frames versus Colorado on Wednesday. Morton has yielded 12 runs on 19 hits in his last two starts (8 1/3 innings) and four homers in his last three outings after keeping the ball in the park in each of his previous four.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Cardinals are 5-1 in Wacha's last six starts versus the Pirates.
                      * Cardinals are 2-5 in their last seven meetings in Pittsburgh.
                      * Pirates are 3-13 in Morton's last 16 starts versus the Cardinals.
                      * Pirates are 0-5 in Morton's last five home starts versus the Cardinals.

                      CONSENSUS:
The public is very evenly split for this pivotal NL Central clash, with 54.46 percent of wagers backing the Pirates, currently at -104.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Breaking down the week's top elite pitching options
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Greinke and his sub-1.50 home ERA facing a San Diego team that ranks among the league's worst at the plate is a no-brainer.

With less than a week remaining in Major League Baseball's regular season, few teams have anything left to play for - but the same can't be said for daily fantasy players.

The final six days of the campaign represent six more chances at DFS glory - but only for those savvy enough to spend their salary wisely, beginning with those all-important pitching options.

Here are the strongest high-salary plays for the remainder of the week:

Tuesday: Madison Bumgarner, Giants (vs. Dodgers)

How on Earth do you choose between Bumgarner and Dodgers counterpart Clayton Kershaw? Two factors work in Bumgarner's favor: he carries a slightly lower salary than his fellow southpaw, and he has home-field advantage. Both hurlers are sensational options in what could be their final starts of the regular season, but MadBum should be the pitcher you opt for in this marquee matchup.

Wednesday: Masahiro Tanaka, Yankees (vs. Red Sox)

Tanaka is the best option on an otherwise hum-drum schedule. The Japanese ace has allowed more than three runs just one in his previous nine starts while showing impeccable control, walking only eight batters in that span. The Yankees are still looking to stay in the division race and will field their best lineup for this one, while the Red Sox have long been eliminated - and have struggled at the plate for most of the season.

Thursday: Jose Fernandez, Marlins (at Rays)

Ah, the final Jose Day of the season - and it feels like it's here all too soon, thanks to Fernandez spending a good chunk of the season on the disabled list. But previous start aside, Fernandez has been on fire since returning for his most recent DL stint, and is in good position to end the year on a positive note against a Rays team that struggles against right-handers. Expect six solid innings and a whole pile of strikeouts.

Friday: Felix Hernandez, Mariners (vs. Athletics)

This slate is full of great pitching options, but Hernandez edges out the field despite having what he would consider a down year. Hernandez has been sensational at Safeco Field throughout his career, and winds down his year versus an Oakland lineup that shouldn't provide much of a challenge. Hernandez is not without risk, but represents great potential at a price that should come in lower than the top options.

Saturday: Zack Greinke, Dodgers (vs. Padres)

Sometimes, the best option is just too easy to identify. This is one of those times, with Greinke and his sub-1.50 home ERA facing a San Diego team that ranks among the league's worst at the plate. Greinke may not pitch as deep into the game as he usually does, but even a six-inning effort against an underwhelming Padres offense should yield enough fantasy points to return value despite his big price tag.

Sunday: Clayton Kershaw, Dodgers (vs. Padres)

See above - Kershaw facing the Padres at Dodger Stadium in the regular-season finale presents the same mismatch as Greinke the day before. DFS players should, however, be wary of two potential pratfalls: Kershaw either being placed on a strict pitch limit in order to keep him fresh for the playoffs, or being scratched altogether in favor of a bullpen arm. Players should keep a close eye on the probable pitchers before committing to Kershaw.

Stroman hot in return from knee injury

Marcus Stroman's incredible return from a torn ACL has given the Toronto Blue Jays and the rotation specifically a real shot in the arm.

Stroman is 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP in his three starts since returning to the Jays rotation.

He looks to stay hot as the Blue Jays visit the Baltimore Orioles Tuesday night. The Jays are currently -155 road favorites.

BoSox and Yanks cashing unders for very different reasons

Both the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees meet Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium in a matchup of teams have been cashing under bets, but they have been doing so with very different reasons.

The Red Sox pitching has been red-hot, allowing 2.29 runs per game over the last seven games (including three straight shuouts of Baltimore), resulting in the under cashing in seven straight ball games.

Meanwhile in New York, the bats have gone silent, scoring just 2.33 runs per game over their last six, where the under has cashed in six straight.

The total for tonight's matchup is currently at 8.0.
