Preview: Astros (83-74) at Mariners (74-83)
    Game: 2
    Venue: Safeco Field
    Date: September 29, 2015 10:10 PM EDT

A home run binge has the Houston Astros maintaining their grasp on a playoff spot, and an AL West title still isn't out of the question.

Now 1 1-2 games out of the division lead with five remaining, the Astros look to continue their power surge Tuesday night against the slumping Seattle Mariners.

After winning the final two tests of a weekend series with first-place Texas, Houston (83-74) gained another game after backing Lance McCullers' six solid innings with solo homers from George Springer, Evan Gattis and Chris Carter in Monday's 3-2 victory over the Mariners. The result kept the Astros a half-game ahead of the Los Angeles Angels, who beat Oakland, for the second wild card.

Houston, second to Toronto for the major league lead with 220 homers, has hit 20 while winning six of nine following five consecutive losses that relinquished its AL West lead. Carter, who snapped a 2-all tie in the seventh, has homered in three straight games and Gattis, Colby Rasmus and Carlos Correa have three during the stretch.

"I'm feeling pretty good right now," Carter told MLB's official website. "I'm getting pitches up in the zone."

McCullers struck out seven while allowing two runs for the Astros' sixth quality start in eight games, while Mike Fiers (2-1, 3.18 ERA) has six in eight starts since joining the club along with injured outfielder Carlos Gomez from Milwaukee July 30.

Fiers owns a 2.44 ERA and has held opposing hitters to a .177 average in those outings, though he's 0-1 with a 4.38 ERA over his last four. He did hold the Angels to three runs in 6 2-3 innings while not getting a decision in Wednesday's 6-5 loss.

The right-hander makes his first appearance against the Mariners.

Seattle (74-83) is already looking toward next year after naming Jerry Dipoto its general manager Monday.

Dipoto, the Angels' GM for 3 1/2 years before abruptly resigning July 1, will oversee a franchise with the sport's longest playoff drought at 14 years and that has lost six straight, one shy of a season high set May 30-June 5.

"During our conversations over the past few weeks, it became clear to me that he has a very solid understanding of our team and organization, both where we are and where we want to be. And he has a strategy to get us there," team president Kevin Mather said in a statement.

The Mariners are hitting .206 during the skid and managed just four hits while striking out 12 times Monday.

Seattle also has some pitching concerns with James Paxton scratched from Tuesday's assignment after tearing a fingernail Thursday at Kansas City, pushing Vidal Nuno (1-4, 4.10) up a day to pitch on short rest.

Nuno allowed five runs and nine hits over 4 1-3 innings in Friday's loss to the Angels, his second rough start since yielding one hit in seven innings in a 6-0 victory over Texas Sept. 9. He lasted just 3 1-3 innings while walking four and surrendering five runs in a loss to the Rangers on Sept. 19.

The left-hander sports a 1.45 ERA in three starts at Safeco Field this season but is 3-16 in 36 starts since the start of 2014, losing 12 of his last 13 decisions.

One of those defeats came Aug. 31 at Minute Maid Park, where Nuno gave up homers to Correa, Jed Lowrie and Hank Conger and permitted five runs in six innings in his only start against Houston.

Springer also homered in his lone at-bat against Nuno on June 21 in Seattle.

LEADING OFF: Cards, Jays, Dodgers can clinch; Harper back

      September 29, 2015

A look at what's happening around the major leagues today:

      CENTRAL SHOWDOWN

The Cardinals can clinch their third straight NL Central crown with another victory at second-place Pittsburgh. St. Louis took the opener of their pivotal series 3-0 Monday night. Michael Wacha (17-6, 3.15 ERA) pitches for the banged-up Cardinals against Charlie Morton (9-8, 4.54). St. Louis lost yet another key player to injury Monday when rookie Stephen Piscotty exited with a bruise on his head after a violent collision with Peter Bourjos in the outfield.

      IS TONIGHT THE NIGHT?

Already assured a playoff spot, the Blue Jays can wrap up their first AL East title in 22 years with a win at Baltimore and a Yankees loss to Boston. Toronto right-hander Marcus Stroman seeks his fourth win in four starts since returning from a spring training knee injury. The Blue Jays got encouraging news Monday on star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who took batting practice for the first time since cracking a shoulder blade. He is expected back in time for the postseason.

      ACES UP

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw gets the next chance to pitch the Dodgers to their third consecutive NL West title after fellow ace Zack Greinke fell short Monday night. Kershaw faces Madison Bumgarner for the fourth time this year as the 2014 World Series MVP looks to save San Francisco's season and become the team's first 19-game winner in 18 years. Bumgarner is 2-0 with a 1.31 ERA in his outings this year against Kershaw, who is 0-2 with a 3.54 ERA in those starts. Kershaw, last year's NL MVP, leads the majors with 281 strikeouts and is in the running for his fourth Cy Young Award. The Dodgers are 0-7 at AT&T Park this season, their longest skid in San Francisco since 1961-62.

      BRYCE'S BREAKOUT

NL MVP front-runner Bryce Harper is expected back in the Nationals' lineup at Atlanta. He was held out Monday following his fight in the dugout Sunday with teammate Jonathan Papelbon. Harper is vying for the NL batting and home run titles. He has a .336 average and is trying to hold off Marlins speedster Dee Gordon for the batting crown. The slugger entered Monday tied with Colorado's Nolan Arenado for the league lead with 41 homers. Harper is almost surely going to end up leading the majors in slugging percentage, and he is neck-and-neck with Cincinnati's Joey Votto for the on-base percentage lead, giving him a shot at the slash-line triple crown, too.

      GEARING UP

Two of the top pitchers moved before the July 31 trade deadline get potential postseason tuneups: Royals right-hander Johnny Cueto faces the White Sox, while Rangers lefty Cole Hamels faces the Tigers. Cueto struggled after his acquisition from Cincinnati, but has bounced back in his past few starts, getting his first win since mid-August his last time out. Meanwhile, Texas has won each of Hamels' last eight starts, and he is 5-1 with a 3.41 ERA since coming over from the Phillies.

      GIVING CHASE

The Astros are still trying to run down the first-place Rangers in the AL West, and Mike Fiers will try to deliver a win in Seattle. Fiers has been solid for Houston since coming over in a July trade with Milwaukee, going 2-1 with a 3.18 ERA. He's allowed seven homers in his past four starts, though, all against division opponents. Vidal Nuno (1-5, 3.69) goes for Seattle.

Cardinals' Molina will miss remainder of regular season

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina will miss the rest of the regular season because of a partially torn thumb ligament, and his availability for the postseason has yet to be determined.

Molina was examined by doctors Monday and told he was not ready to play, though they were encouraged that his strength and flexibility have improved. Molina suffered the injury on Sept. 20 when he tagged out the Chicago Cubs' Anthony Rizzo, who was attempting to score on a sacrifice fly.

The seven-time Gold Glove winner will be reexamined Sunday before the Cardinals play their final regular-season game against the Braves at Atlanta.

              Yankees' Tanaka will return Wednesday

NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees finally have an answer to when Masahiro Tanaka will make his next start after being sidelined with a Grade 1 right hamstring strain.

The answer to the highly anticipated question is Tanaka will start Wednesday's game against the Boston Red Sox.

Tanaka cleared all the necessary hurdles before Monday's series opener and by having him start Wednesday, it would give him five days' rest before any potential wild-card playoff game on Oct. 6.

Nationals' day of reckoning looms after Papelbon attacks Harper

Even for him, controversial closer Jonathan Papelbon has had an eventful time with his new Nationals team. Within the past couple weeks alone, Papelbon implied that his old, rebuilding Phillies club was populated by non-winners in an unnecessarily rude press conference; he drew a three-game ban by twice throwing at Orioles star Manny Machado's head following a game-deciding home run by Machado; and now, in the highlight of all the lowlights, he has started a fight with the Nats' own franchise player, Bryce Harper.

The dugout brawl instigated by Papelbon on Sunday by all rights should spell the temperamental reliever's end in Washington. It is of course very hard to predict how Nationals management will handle this -- how to predict a team that thinks it's a good idea to add Papelbon in pennant race? -- but it's apparent to most of us now Papelbon just isn't worth the trouble he brings, even if he isn't always trying to do harm to his team's best player.

Bizarrely, Papelbon, who attacked Harper by wrapping his hands around the young phenom's neck for talking back to the volatile reliever, was left in the game by out-of-touch manager Matt Williams after trying to separate the team's best player's head from his neck. Papelbon already has three games coming to him from the MLB via a ban associated with the attempt to hit Machado in the head, and either MLB or the Nats themselves should round out the ban to a season-ending week to now. He can't be left in a position to do any more damage to any more stars, whether they are on his team or the opponent's.

The Papelbon-instigated dugout fight, which followed Papelbon's decision to tell off Harper for not running out a pop-out, helped transition Washington quickly from a National disaster to a National embarrassment. This team will go down as one of the most disappointing teams in recent decades, a prohibitive favorite that couldn't ever seem to get out of its own way and eventually burst into figurative flames, right there on camera for everyone to see.

And it's not like this wasn't predictable.

Several – and I mean several – major-league GMs declared at deadline time they wouldn't ever consider touching Papelbon, even though he's one of the game's best closers. These GMs are from teams that were tied to Papelbon, and in some cases teams that seemed to badly need a closer of any sort.

However, Papelbon's reputation as a crotch-grabbing, clubhouse-destroying malcontent didn't deter the Nationals, who imported him even though they already had one of the league's more successful closers in Drew Storen, a Stanford-educated fellow who wouldn't think of harming anyone but himself. Meanwhile, the chasing, rival Mets added the guy the Nats should have targeted, set-up man Tyler Clippard, who also happens to be an ex-Nat, and several other reinforcements, including superstar outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, on their way to the NL East title they clinched Saturday.

The Nationals-owning Lerners, who are said by sources to have been dissatisfied for weeks, long before their early elimination, did consider one big change within the past couple months, and that was whether to pull the plug on their ultra-intense manager, Williams, as the team continued its obvious underachievement. Williams had lost most of the clubhouse by this time, as was reported here several weeks ago, but the Lerners ultimately decided against making the unusual move of axing their manager in the heat of a team's pennant race.

Anyway, the Nationals' talented players weren't clicking with the super-intense Williams, and they never did. One Nationals player defended Williams in this space by saying the players were able to not let the manager's demeanor, which seems to be border on the dour, bother them. Whether it did, the team never came close to playing close to its potential.

Williams is a nice guy and hard worker, and he certainly was a great (if enhanced) player. But he was miscast as a modern-day manager. He didn't mesh with this team, and he didn't seem to adjust to the new bullpen strategies.

Anyway, the Nats' two-game lead at the time of the ill-advised Papelbon trade soon disappeared, then turned into a big deficit, when the two NL East teams met on the field. That's when the upstart Mets, with the newly acquired Cespedes, showed what a fun, cohesive unit they are, beating the Nats like a dying drum game after game.

Meantime, the anti-fun Nats finally exploded Sunday, with its big import reliever wrapping his hands around the league's probable MVP over how hard the star ran on a popout. Now its obvious things need to be done. And other things undone.

This was supposed to be the big year for the Nats, who have several major free agents, including star pitcher Jordan Zimmermann, starting shortstop Ian Desmond, pitcher Doug Fister and outfielder Denard Span. So several changes will come naturally. Most, if not all, of those free agents will be gone. And now, a whole new bullpen will have to be built.

Papelbon, who has $11 million to go for 2016 in his re-worked contract, has to leave. As many other teams suspected, he isn't worth the trouble.

The volatile bullpen guy apologized to Harper after attacking him, but it's too late. The image of a one-inning guy wrapping his tattooed hand around one of the game's transformative stars is indelible.

Papelbon never quite got the fact that he is a reliever only tolerated because of his on-field resume. He doesn't take a hint even though only one team wanted him when he had a perfect closing record this year. He thinks because folks put a microphone in front of him that that means people desire his advice. He couldn't be anything further from a leader.

Storen, a fine closer when the ill-advised Papelbon deal was made, needs to be traded, too, and his value isn't exactly up, either, as he'll go as a slumping set-up man who missed the last few weeks with a broken thumb, the result of a temper tantrum following a season-defining gopherball to Cespedes.

It's been that kind of year for the Nats, who not only didn't play like they should but also didn't handle things as they should, either. Early this year, I covered a Nationals-Marlins game in which catcher Wilson Ramos made the key mistake in the game. Ramos didn't come out and face the media. And, true to form for this team, he wasn't made to come out, either.

Rizzo didn't face the media Sunday, according to Nationals reporters. (Not surprisingly, he didn't respond to a text, either.)

This was a team that didn't understand the concept of accountability, and its time for the Lerners to look closely into exactly what's going on here. Word has been out that they are very unhappy. The belief has been that Williams will be out (they seemed inclined to make that call several weeks ago, and now they have no choice) but that GM Mike Rizzo will be given one more chance.

Rizzo has assembled an impressive array of talent, but he also hand-picked a manager better suited for the 1950s than this decade from their days together in Arizona, he disregarded chemistry in making the most disastrous trade-deadline deal, and oversaw a team that has alternated between underachieving and failing in tight moments. Rizzo knows his talent, so it would be understandable if his bosses decided to still give him another chance. But after missing so badly on his last managerial call, maybe the owners ought to make that hire this time.

MLB playoff race watch: Cards, Jays, Dodgers can clinch Tuesday

We have just six days to go in the 2015 MLB regular season (unless there are ties!). We know the five NL playoff teams and two of the AL playoff teams, but there are still several races yet to be decided. Let's take a quick look around the league at where things stand as of Tuesday morning.

The Full MLB Schedule for Tuesday

                                AL East

The Blue Jays can clinch their first AL East title since 1993 today. They have a 5 1/2-game lead on the Yankees, with a "magic number" (MLB refers to it as an "elimination number") of two. The Jays continue a series at Baltimore with surprise secret weapon Marcus Stroman on the mound. The Yankees continue at Boston, where the Red Sox would just love to help eliminate them from division contention. Michael Pineda vs. Rick Porcello.

                                AL Central

The Royals clinched (what seems like weeks ago) but now are wrestling with the Jays for best record, which determines their respective ALDS opponent and possible home field in the ALCS. The Jays have essentially a two-game lead because they won the season series. Everything is coming up Canada! Kansas City continues its series against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

                                AL West

The Rangers are 1 1/2 games up on the Astros, and two games up on the Angels, and their magic number for both is five (Houston and Los Angeles have the same number of losses). Texas is finally cooling off, having lost three straight after falling to the Tigers on Monday. The Astros are finally heating up again, having won three straight after beating the Mariners on Monday. The Angels have been hotter than most for a while, having won six in a row after edging the Athletics on Monday. Those respective series continue today. According to the SportsLine projection models, the Rangers sit at 76.8 percent to win the division (and 89.1 for a playoff spot); the Angels have an 11.9 percent chance to win the West (and 27.1 for a playoff berth); the Astros stand at 8.2 percent to win the division (and 67.4 percent for the playoffs).

                                AL wild card

The Yankees are up 3 1/2 games in the top spot, and Sportsline says they are virtually 100 percent assured of getting a wild card. They could even clinch today -- if they win, and the Angels, Rangers and Twins lose.

The Astros hold a 1/2-game lead over the Angels, and the Twins are just 1 1/2 out after beating the Indians on Monday. Cleveland's loss pushed the Tribe to a sub-.500 record and five games back. They could be eliminated today. Sportsline gives the Twins a 10.3 percent chance, and the Indians a 0.1 percent chance of making the playoffs. Everyone else -- you're outta there.

                                NL East

The Mets have clinched their first NL East title since 2006. They also have a two-game lead on the Dodgers for second-best record, which means they'd have home field in the NLDS.

                                NL Central

The Cardinals can clinch the division by beating Pittsburgh today (Michael Wacha vs. Charlie Morton). The Pirates have just a 1.9 percent chance of winning the Central after falling to the Cards on Monday night at PNC Park. Their series continues through Wednesday.

                                NL West

The Dodgers have a five-game lead on the Giants, with a magic number of two, so the only real threat would come if San Francisco swept the current four-game series at AT&T Park. Well, the Giants won on Monday night... Sportsline says the Giants have just a 0.9 percent chance of overtaking the Dodgers. Clayton Kershaw vs. Madison Bumgarner tonight.

                                NL wild card

The Pirates have a three-game lead on the Cubs for home field in the wild-card game, which likely would pit Gerrit Cole against Jake Arrieta. Can you even stand waiting for it?
