LEADING OFF: Arrieta goes for No. 21, Keuchel right at home

    September 26, 2015

A look at what's happening around the major leagues Sunday:

    EVERYTHING'S JAKE

Jake Arrieta's remarkable season can get a little more special if he can beat Pittsburgh. The right-hander, who leads the majors with 20 wins, can become the first Cubs pitcher with more than 20 victories since Ferguson Jenkins went 24-13 in 1971. A.J Burnett starts for the Pirates in the night matchup at Wrigley Field between playoff-bound teams.

    HOME, SWEET HOME

Dallas Keuchel starts for the Astros as they try to hold onto the second AL wild-card spot. The lefty is 14-0 with a 1.47 ERA at Minute Maid Park this season. He'll face AL West-leading Texas, which leads Houston by 3 1/2 games.

    FLYING WITH CLIPPED WINGS

The banged-up Cardinals wrap a series against the Brewers hoping to edge closer to an NL Central crown. St. Louis dropped its magic number to five Saturday, but also had infielder Matt Carpenter exit with left hip tightness not long after finding out pitcher Carlos Martinez is done for the year with a shoulder strain. The Cards are already without star catcher Yadier Molina, who will be re-examined Monday for a slight ligament tear in his left thumb. John Lackey faces rookie Tyler Cravy (0-8, 6.21), who's yet to win in 12 career appearances (six starts).

    ROAD WORK

The Mets have won a team-record 10 straight road games, including Saturday's victory at Cincinnati that clinched the NL East. Jacob deGrom pitches for New York at Great American Ball Park, having given up at least eight hits in three of his last five starts - before that, he'd done that just once in his prior 38 starts.

    ANOTHER TRY

Braves righty Shelby Miller aims to end a drought that almost defies belief - an All-Star this year, he's 0-15 in his last 23 starts. Miller has gotten the worst run support in the majors, the main reason he's 5-16 despite a 3.00 ERA. He'll try to break the streak when he pitches at Miami.

Neither Ervin Santana nor Randy Wolf will pitch in the postseason, but one has a chance to help his team get there while the other wants to prove he can still compete.

A suspension already withdrew Santana's eligibility for the playoffs, but he will continue his push to get the Minnesota Twins there anyway. The 39-year-old Wolf is simply chasing his first win with the Detroit Tigers in Sunday's series finale at Comerica Park.

Despite seven losses in its last 11, Minnesota (79-75) enters 1 1/2 games behind Houston for the AL's second wild card after splitting the first two of this series.

The Twins let a 4-1 seventh-inning lead in the opener turn into a 6-4 loss, and while not calling Saturday's 6-2 victory a "must-win," manager Paul Monitor said his team can't give any more games away with eight left on the schedule.

"The days are dwindling, and the last thing we can afford is to give another one away," said Molitor, whose team is 7-11 versus Detroit this season.

Santana (6-4, 4.31 ERA) hasn't let much slip through his fingers this month, though his 80-game suspension earlier this season for the use of performance-enhancing drugs means he wouldn't reap the postseason reward.

The 11-year veteran is 4-0 in his last five with a 1.50 ERA, ranking toward the top of MLB in wins, ERA, strikeouts (39) and home runs per nine innings (0.25) since Aug. 30.

Santana - whose ERA rose to 6.05 on Aug. 25 - has one non-win during his hot stretch after surrendering two runs in seven innings of a 7-4, 12-inning loss to the Tigers on Sept. 16. Detroit rocked the right-hander for six runs in four innings July 10, though the Twins won 8-6. Santana had gone 5-1 with a 1.84 ERA in his prior eight against Detroit.

Victor Martinez has two home runs while hitting .357 in 28 at-bats against Santana, and Ian Kinsler has six doubles, a triple and a homer to go with a .323 average in 62 at-bats. Miguel Cabrera is 5 for 21 against Santana with a home run and five strikeouts.

Saturday's loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Detroit (72-82) and clinched its first losing season since 2008. Earlier in the day, general manager Al Avila announced that second-year manager Brad Ausmus would return for 2016.

"For the past two months, we've been evaluating every level of our baseball operations, and on Friday, I met with Brad and told him I wanted him to continue as manager of the Detroit Tigers," Avila said. "He and I are on the same page as to the future of this organization."

It's anyone's guess as to how much longer Wolf (0-4, 5.91) will be a part of it, but the veteran left-hander is focused on picking up the first win of his 16th season.

Wolf registered his third quality start in six outings Monday, but a 3-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox denied him his first win since June 2, 2014, after he allowed three runs in seven innings.

Wolf failed to escape the fifth inning in his three previous starts, surrendering 20 hits and 14 runs over 11 innings. Opponents are batting .307 against him.

Torii Hunter has just five at-bats against Wolf - logging a single and a home run - despite their careers overlapping since the late-90s.

If the New York Yankees' offense continues sputtering the way it has over the last six games, it won't be anything new for Luis Severino.

The next chance to break out comes Sunday at home in the series finale against the Chicago White Sox with time running out on their AL East title hopes.

The Yankees (85-69) have taken two of the first three in this set after Saturday's 2-1 victory, but Toronto and Houston also won, so they remain four games behind the Blue Jays in the division with eight to play. New York is 4 1/2 ahead of the Astros for the top wild card, so a celebration probably isn't far off.

"I'm excited to celebrate and taste some of the champagne," said Dellin Betances, whose bullpen crew has an AL-record 573 strikeouts. That's two more than the previous mark set by New York last year and 16 shy of Colorado's big league record established in 2012.

The Yankees have alternated wins and losses for six games while averaging 2.5 runs and hitting .223. Alex Rodriguez is batting .115 in his last 10 and Brett Gardner .116 in his last 13.

Nevertheless, they assured themselves at least a split with the White Sox and haven't allowed Chicago to win a series in the Bronx since its 2005 World Series season, going 25-8 since with victories in 10 of 11.

Severino (4-3, 3.10 ERA), who has allowed at least three runs twice in his first nine big league starts, isn't getting the run support he deserves with a 2.92 RSA while New York's starters overall have a 5.07 mark - third best in baseball behind Toronto and Texas. When given at least two runs of support, the right-hander is 4-0 in five outings.

The one time he didn't earn the decision was Tuesday's 6-4 win in 10 innings at Toronto after giving up two runs and three hits with three walks in six innings.

If there's a complaint with the 21-year-old, it's probably his control. After issuing one free pass in 11 innings over his first two starts, he's posted 4.70 walks per nine innings in his last seven outings.

He's up against International League Most Valuable Pitcher Erik Johnson, whose RSA is nearly three times that of Severino at 7.83 in his four starts since being recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Sept. 1.

Johnson (3-0, 3.52), though, was plenty deserving of the decision in Monday's 3-2 win at Detroit after limiting the Tigers to two runs and five hits with a career high-matching nine strikeouts in six innings.

"I felt good. It was a good first inning to put the right foot forward, and I thought I was very aggressive in the zone with fastball, slider, change," Johnson told MLB's official website. "I gave up a few hits. Sometimes the aggressiveness, you're going to run into some hits here and there."

The right-hander has allowed six home runs with at least one in each start, and he's walked 10 over 17 innings in his last three. He faced the Yankees for the only time in 2013 and took the loss with Gardner going 2 for 4 with a triple.

The White Sox (73-82), who were officially eliminated from postseason contention, have also been stagnant with 2.5 runs per game and a .203 average over a 4-7 span. They're in danger of falling 10 games under .500 for the first time since being 32-42 on June 29.

Despite seven straight seasons without playoff baseball, Chicago remains optimistic.

"I don't like to see this like something bad," Jose Abreu said through a translator. "This is something good for the future, and that's the way that I want to see."

The Toronto Blue Jays are hardly satisfied even upon ending baseball's longest postseason drought.

And why would they be after securing one of the more anticlimactic playoff berths in major league history?

After finally celebrating a playoff spot a day after actually earning it, the Blue Jays look to take another step closer to the AL East title by sweeping a three-game series from the Tampa Bay Rays in Sunday's home finale.

Toronto's magic number to clinch a playoff spot was reduced to one after Friday's series-opening win, and it stayed there after the Los Angeles Angels defeated Seattle.

In the overnight hours, however, it became apparent that the Blue Jays (89-65) had in fact clinched their first playoff berth since 1993 because the three AL West teams vying for a spot - Texas, Houston and the Angels - all still play each other, making it impossible for all three to win as many games as Toronto already has.

Just for good measure, the Blue Jays officially cut their magic number to zero by beating the Rays 10-8 on Saturday. They followed up with a raucous champagne and beer celebration but insist their work isn't done.

"We expect to have another one of these when we win the division," Jose Bautista said. "That's our goal."

Toronto leads the second-place New York Yankees by four games with eight to play.

The Blue Jays have won five of six over the Rays (75-80) and conclude the season with three at Tampa Bay. Bautista has been instrumental to that success, hitting home runs Nos. 38 and 39 on Saturday to give him five homers in his last four against Tampa Bay.

Toronto is tied with the Astros for the AL's best home record at 52-28 and can match the 1992 club for the second-most home wins in team history. The 1985 team went a franchise-best 54-26.

Mark Buehrle (14-7, 3.69 ERA) gets the ball in what will be the final home game before a likely playoff date with his chances of extending his string of consecutive 200-inning seasons in serious jeopardy.

Buehrle is 14 2-3 innings away from joining Hall of Famers Warren Spahn, Don Sutton and Gaylord Perry as the only pitchers to have tossed at least 200 in 15 straight seasons since 1901, but with only two starts remaining, time isn't on his side.

He also has seemingly hit a wall, going six innings or less in each of his last six starts. The veteran left-hander has a 5.65 ERA with opponents batting .390 against him in three starts this month with the Blue Jays losing each. Buehrle went 1-1 with a 6.17 ERA in two April starts against the Rays and hasn't faced them since.

Tampa Bay counters with Matt Andriese (3-5, 4.37), who has made 10 relief appearances since starting at Kansas City on July 7. In the midst of his fifth stint in the majors this year, Andriese has a 5.27 ERA in 15 relief outings but a 3.62 ERA in seven starts.

In two starts against the Blue Jays - the last coming June 22 - the rookie right-hander is 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA.

Edwin Encarnacion is 0 for 5 against Andriese, while Josh Donaldson is 2 for 4. Backup catcher Dioner Navarro is likely to start since he's 3 for 3 with a homer and double against Andriese and 9 for 21 with two home runs and two doubles in his last five games.

Evan Longoria is batting .340 over 47 career at-bats against Buehrle and Logan Forsythe is hitting .409 with four doubles in 22 at-bats in their matchups.

Amid some strong individual efforts in a frustrating first year with Atlanta, Shelby Miller's most painful moment might have occurred the last time he pitched in Miami.

He was an out shy of a no-hitter there May 17 but hasn't won since, and the results may be leading to the strangest year for a starting pitcher in baseball history.

The right-hander returns to the mound at Marlins Park on Sunday as the Braves conclude a three-game series, and while many will point to an expansive winless stretch as this season's ultimate misfortune, there's a lot more to it.

Miller (5-16, 3.00 ERA) enters his second-to-last outing at 0-15 with a 3.65 ERA in 23 starts since dominating the Marlins. He's tied with Matt Keough (1979) for the second-longest single-season winless run behind Jack Nabors' 27 in a row in 1916. He could also become the first Braves pitcher to lose eight straight starts since Preston Hanna in '78.

Wait, it gets worse: With a .238 winning percentage, he's on pace to become the first with at least 30 starts and an ERA of 3.00 or lower with that poor of a percentage since Bob Groom went 7-26 (.212) with a 2.87 ERA in 1909. In fact, Miller would be the fourth in history to have a 30-start season with such an ERA and a percentage under .250.

However, it might be unfair to put Miller and Groom in the same category because Groom's numbers can't be considered an anomaly. The league ERA was 2.53 that season compared to the 2015 mark of 3.97 entering play Saturday. Groom's ERA was higher than the league, and Miller is nearly a full run better than his contemporaries.

The 24-year-old lost his seventh straight outing in Monday's 4-0 defeat at the New York Mets after giving up two runs and seven hits in six innings. In his last five, he's been given one run of support across 27 innings. His 2.30 season RSA is on pace to be the lowest for a qualifying pitcher since Jose DeLeon's 2.27 mark in '85.

"As bad as my streak has been, we're still playing hard baseball, and that is all that matters to me," Miller told MLB's official website. "It would be a lot different if it was going this way and it didn't seem like anybody was trying."

Miller has unsurprisingly lost both of his starts against the Marlins since the two-hit shutout, but he's 2-2 with a 1.16 ERA in five outings against them this season.

It doesn't help that after Saturday's 6-2 loss, the Braves (62-93) have dropped six straight to the Marlins (68-87), who can match a season-best five-game winning streak.

"They realize there is no rainbow at the end, in terms of postseason," said manager Dan Jennings, whose club has won 16 of 24. "But there is the mindset of, this core is together. This core is good. Finish this season strong and get ready for 2016."

Justin Bour homered for a second straight game, is batting .364 with five homers and 14 RBIs in his last 11 and is 3 for 5 against Miller.

Miami counters with Tom Koehler, who could join Miller and become baseball's seventh pitcher to lose at least 15 games this season.

Koehler (10-14, 3.94), however, has deserved his fate a bit more. The right-hander gave up four runs - three earned - and seven hits in five innings of Tuesday's 6-2 home loss to Philadelphia, falling to 2-8 with a 5.29 ERA in his last 11 starts.

Koehler is 1-4 with a 3.54 ERA in nine career starts against the Braves

Now that the New York Mets have punched their ticket to the postseason, they have their eyes on securing home-field advantage in the first round.

They're hoping Jacob deGrom will be revitalized in his first start in nearly two weeks Sunday when they face the Cincinnati Reds seeking an 11th consecutive road win.

New York sealed its first playoff appearance since 2006 and just its second division title in 27 years with Saturday's 10-2 victory behind Matt Harvey's 6 2-3 innings. The Mets (88-67) are looking at a likely NL division series matchup with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Los Angeles owns a hefty lead in the NL West over San Francisco, which is on the brink of elimination.

"It's worth all the time, all the effort, all the things you do - this is the culmination of it all," manager Terry Collins said. "We're going to have a little fun tonight and relax tomorrow. Right now we have to go get home field (advantage), that's next."

The Mets' offense has been firing on all cylinders, scoring 28 runs in the first three games against Cincinnati to put themselves in position for their fourth consecutive sweep of a four-game series. They homered three times Saturday for the second straight game, highlighted by Lucas Duda's first-inning grand slam, the first of his career. Duda has 12 RBIs in this series.

Saturday's victory was also New York's franchise-record 10th straight on the road. The Mets are hitting .305 and averaging 8.3 runs with 43 homers while winning 18 of 20 away from home, and their .625 winning percentage (25-15) all-time at Great American Ballpark is the highest among NL teams.

DeGrom (13-8, 2.64 ERA) missed Tuesday's start against Atlanta for extra rest. He's up to 181 innings after throwing 140 1-3 during his Rookie of the Year campaign last season and has given up six earned runs twice in his last five outings. Before that stretch, his 1.98 ERA trailed only Zack Greinke for the NL lead.

The 10 hits he gave up Sept. 15 against Miami were the second-most of his career.

New York is hoping a plan similar to the one it employed last year pays off again. DeGrom didn't pitch between Aug. 7-23 in 2014 because of tendinitis in his right rotator cuff. He finished strong after coming back, going 3-1 with a 2.25 ERA in his final six starts.

"The location of his pitches is not what it needs to be," Collins said. "This guy became extremely successful because of the sink with his fastball, where he got ground balls, and right now he's getting fly balls cause everything seems to be moving up."

DeGrom, who is 5-0 over his last eight road starts, has never faced the Reds or any of their current players.

Cincinnati (63-91) has dropped seven straight for the third time this season, averaging 2.7 runs during that skid.

Keyvius Sampson (2-5, 6.45) comes off one of his better starts during a rough rookie season, limiting St. Louis to one run over 5 1-3 innings in Cincinnati's 3-1 road loss Tuesday. The Reds are looking for Sampson to bring the success back home, where he's 0-4 with an 8.74 ERA in five starts.

The Baltimore Orioles are going to need a lot of help to reach the playoffs for the third time in four years, especially if they keep failing to help themselves.

They'll try to avoid a three-game sweep against the Red Sox in the teams' final meeting of the season Sunday in Boston.

Saturday's hit to Baltimore's increasingly slim playoff chances was twofold. The Orioles (76-78) lost 8-0 to the Red Sox, while Houston won 9-7 against Texas, lowering Baltimore's elimination number to four. The Orioles have been held to seven hits in being shut out through the first two games of this set. They had been averaging 5.2 runs while winning 11 of the previous 15 meetings in the season series.

"We haven't scored in the last two days, so that kind of starts and ends there for me," manager Buck Showalter said. " ... I'll be the first to tip my hat to the other team, but we're capable of better."

Baltimore also matched a season high with three errors Saturday, including two by Manny Machado. Machado is not swinging the bat particularly well, either, hitting .207 in his last eight games.

The Orioles would love to get Adam Jones back after he missed a fifth straight game due to back spasms, though Showalter said he was available off the bench.

Ubaldo Jimenez (12-9, 4.16 ERA) has put the brakes on his post-All Star break slump for Baltimore, going 3-0 with a 3.04 ERA in his last four starts compared to 2-5 and 7.50 in his previous nine. He was excellent in Tuesday's 4-1 win at Washington, giving up one unearned run over six innings for his 100th career victory.

Jimenez walked five and has issued 14 free passes over 23 2-3 innings in his last four starts, though he's limited opponents to a .202 batting average in the same span.

"You're going to have to sometimes live with it," Showalter said of Jimenez's propensity for walks. "That's a little bit more than you want to."

Boston has had Jimenez's number historically. He's 2-3 with a 7.96 ERA in 10 career starts, allowing four runs over five innings before leaving without a decision in a 6-5 win Sept. 15. He's averaged an abysmal 7.2 walks per nine innings over the last five meetings, but managed to come away with a road victory June 23 after allowing three runs in five innings in a 6-4 win.

Pablo Sandoval missed a sixth straight game for Boston (74-80) due to pneumonia but manager Torey Lovullo said his condition was improving. He's batting .359 with five extra-base hits in 39 at-bats against Jimenez.

This has also been a good matchup for Dustin Pedroia (9 for 24) and Mookie Betts (4 for 9).

The Red Sox will start left-handed rookie Henry Owens (3-3, 4.41), who threw 7 2-3 shutout innings in a 10-1 victory at Baltimore on Sept. 16. He had a perfect game through four innings in his next start Tuesday against Tampa Bay, but he ended up yielding five runs and seven hits over 7 1-3 innings in a 5-2 defeat.

"The consistency was definitely there early," he told MLB's official website. " ... I think I just did a poor job those last few innings. There was definitely positives from the outing I will take."

Owens is 1-2 with a 6.35 ERA in five starts at Fenway Park, allowing seven homers in 28 1-3 innings.
