    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Average NFL game last year had 13.2 penalties for 111.1 yards. Last weekend, the average game had 18.6 penalties for 166.2 yards.

-- Eli Manning has started 170 straight games. During that span, the Redskins have started 10 different QBs.

-- A's starting pitchers have six wins in their last 40 games. No bueno.

-- Tennessee Titans are only NFL team that hasn't tried a field goal yet.

-- Mets started this season 17-32 on the road; they're 21-5 on road since then.

    -- Giants 32, Redskins 21

-- Was surprised that CBS announcers commented more than once on lack of enthusiasm of crowd

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend.......

    13) 2-0 Jets are already +8 in turnovers, which obviously isn't sustainable; they've outgained opponents by only 13 yards so far. What happens when they aren't forcing turnovers? 0-2 Eagles are in desperate straits here; as a Ram fan, it is my duty to tell you that Sam Bradford's NFL W-L record is 18-32-1.

    12) Florida won its last ten games with Tennessee, but they've suspended a QB for flunking a drug test, never a good sign. Not their starting QB, but the kid who was the starter in the season opener.

    11) Brandon Weeden is only 5-16 as an NFL starter, but the former minor leaguer is older than Aaron Rodgers. Dallas brought in another bonafide backup in Matt Cassel, so they're not 100% sold on Weeden. Falcons are 2-0, but trailed both games late.

    10) Pirates-Cubs open a big series in Wrigley today; home field in Wild Card game the likely objective. Doubt either side will catch St Louis for NL Central crown.

    9) Baltimore is 0-2, Cincinnati 0-2, so huge game for Ravens in their home opener to get back in AFC North race. Bengals have 303 rushing yards in two games.

    8) USC lost its last two visits to Arizona State 62-41/43-22. Trojans lost at home to Stanford last week; a loss here and the natives will get restless.

    7) Buffalo-Miami finds bully Richie Incognito coming back to south Florida after Dolphins dumped him two years ago. Interesting game, with AFC East looking like an improved division. Will the division runner-up make the playoffs?

    6) Auburn is switching QBs after getting waxed at LSU last week, which followed an OT win over a I-AA team. College football people are fickle as hell; Auburn fired Gene Chizik couple years after he won a national title- a loss to Miss State wouldn't help Gus Malzahn's standing on the Plains.

    5) Hopefully the Steelers won't have more fans than the Rams for a St Louis home game in the Jones Dome. I'm thinking Todd Gurley makes his Rams' debut this week; he could be the playmaker their offense is sorely lacking.

    4) Astros close out their home season with series against Texas. Minnesota visits the Tigers, as the AL West/Wild Card races come down the home stretch.

    3) Colts travel to Tennessee on a short week after a dismal performance Monday nite; home debut for Titans' rookie QB Marcus Mariota. Indy has injury issues at cornerback; can Mariota and the Tennessee offense take advantage of it?

    2) TCU eviscerated Texas Tech 82-27 last year; now Horned Frogs visit Lubbock to face a Tech squad that upset Arkansas last week. Dicey spot for TCU.

    1) Pretty good Monday night game, Chiefs at Green Bay. At one time, Andy Reid was an assistant for the Packers. Chiefs had an extra three days to prep for this.

Dickey struggling versus Rays this season

The Toronto Blue Jays have gone 0-4 in knuckleballer R.A. Dickey's four starts versus the Tampa Bay Rays this season. Dickey is probable to get another shot when the Jays open a three-game set with the Rays at Rogers Centre Friday evening.

Dickey has a personal record of 0-3 in those games and has a 4.94 ERA thanks to 13 earned runs in 23 2/3 innings of work.

The Rays are expected to counter with Jake Odorizzi.

Wind blowing in at Wrigley Field Friday

According to weather forecasts, wind will be blowing in from left field in Chicago when the Cubs host the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field Friday afternoon.

Probable pitchers for Friday's tilt are Gerrit Cole for the Bucs and Jon Lester for the Cubbies. The Cubs opened -115 and the total is presently off the board.

MLB roundup: Royals win AL Central

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Mike Moustakas homered, drove in three runs and reached five times as the Kansas City Royals thrashed the Seattle Mariners 10-4 Thursday night.

With the Royals' victory and the Minnesota Twins' loss to the Cleveland Indians, Kansas City wrapped up the American League Central championship.

The Royals have not won a division crown since 1985 when they were in the AL West.

            Padres 5, Giants 4

SAN DIEGO -- For the second straight night, San Diego scored a walk-off win against San Francisco.

Pinch-hitter Alexi Amarista singled home Derek Norris with one out in the ninth to give the Padres a 5-4 win in the rubber match of the three-game series.

The loss dropped the reigning World Series champion Giants eight games behind the Dodgers with 10 games to play in the National League West.

            Indians 6, Twins 3

MINNEAPOLIS -- Cody Anderson pitched 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball and got plenty of early run support as Cleveland salvaged the final game of a three-game series.

The win moved Cleveland to within 2 1/2 games of the Twins in the American League wild card standings, and to within four games of the idle Houston Astros for the second wild card spot.

Francisco Lindor had three hits and designated hitter Carlos Santana had a three-run home run.

            Cardinals 7, Brewers 3

ST. LOUIS -- Thanks largely to a rookie who just arrived in the majors about two months ago, St. Louis continued its steady march to a National League Central title.

Stephen Piscotty knocked in St. Louis' last four runs, lifting the Cardinals over the Brewers.

St. Louis reduced its magic number for a third straight division crown to six thanks to Piscotty, who now has 37 RBIs in his first 58 games.

            Mets 6, Reds 4

CINCINNATI -- Lucas Duda delivered a pair of run-scoring doubles and Daniel Murphy drove home the go-ahead run with a triple in the seventh as New York reduced its magic number for a postseason berth to three.

New York increased its lead in the National League East to 7 1/2 games over the Washington Nationals who dropped their third straight to Baltimore on Thursday.

Mets closer Jeurys Familia shut the door in the ninth for his 42nd save while Eric Goedell earned the win.

            Yankees 3, White Sox 2

NEW YORK -- Carlos Beltran hit a three-run home run with one out in the bottom of the third inning off Chris Sale and New York held on.

The Yankees won for the seventh time in their last 11 games while lowering their magic number to clinching a postseason berth to six.

They also equaled last year's win total while beating the White Sox at home for the ninth straight time.

            Rangers 8, Athletics 1

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Cole Hamels pitched six solid innings for his fifth straight victory and Texas completed a three-game sweep of Oakland.

Texas increased its lead in the American League West over idle Houston to a season-high 3 1/2 games.

The Rangers and Astros begin a three-game series Friday at Minute Maid Park.

            Pirates 5, Rockies 4

DENVER -- Pedro Alvarez hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth inning and playoff-bound Pittsburgh rallied to beat Colorado for its sixth consecutive victory.

Starling Marte had four hits and was 13-for-20 in the four-game series for the Pirates.

Joe Blanton worked the seventh to pick up the win and Mark Melancon tossed a perfect ninth for his major league-leading 50th save.

            Dodgers 6, Diamondbacks 3

LOS ANGELES -- Chris Heisey hit a grand slam to highlight a six-run fifth inning and Los Angeles edged closer to its third straight National League West title with a victory over Arizona.

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw struck out nine and gave up three runs on six hits before departing after five innings in his shortest stint this season.

            Orioles 5, Nationals 4

WASHINGTON -- Catcher Matt Wieters hit a two-run homer off reliever Blake Treinen in the eighth inning and Baltimore kept its slim playoff hopes alive with a victory over Washington, further damaging the Nationals' postseason aspirations.

The Orioles, who won all three games of the series, pulled within 3 1/2 games of idle Houston for the second American League wild card.

Washington lost for the seventh time in its past 10 home games.

            Marlins 1, Phillies0

MIAMI –- J.T. Realmuto snapped a scoreless tie with a seventh-inning RBI triple to lead Miami to the win.

Derek Dietrich started the winning rally with a one-out infield single, snapping a streak of nine consecutive batters retired by Phillies rookie right-hander Alec Asher.

            Realmuto followed with the game-winner.

            Rays 4, Red Sox 2

BOSTON -- Steven Souza Jr. smacked a go-ahead double to cap a three-run sixth inning, and Tampa Bay beat Boston.

Evan Longoria hit his 20th home run of the year.

() - A team's Elimination Number is determined by adding the leading team's number of wins to the trailing team's number of losses. Subtract that total from 163. The first-place team's Magic Number is the same as the second-place team's Elimination Number.
                (E) - A team has been eliminated from the division race. Note that a team eliminated from the division race may still be a contender in the Wild-card race.
                x - Clinched division title
                y - Clinched wild-card
                z - Clinched playoff berth

-Tiebreaker games will be played to determine Division Championships, even if the two tied Clubs are assured of participating in the Postseason. If a Division Championship tiebreaker game is necessary, the head-to-head record between the tied Clubs will determine home-field advantage. If the head-to-head record is tied, then division record will be the next tiebreaker.

-In the event of a tie for the division championship or a Wild Card spot, a one-game playoff will break the tie. If three or four clubs are tied for first place in a division at the end of the regular season, and the two non-division winners would NOT be Wild Card clubs, a playoff will be played among the teams in question.

-If two Clubs are tied for both Wild Card berths, home-field advantage will be determined by the head-to-head record between the tied Clubs. If the head-to-head record is tied, then division record will be the next tiebreaker.

Sabathia heating up during stretch run

Since returning from the 15-day disabled list due to a knee injury, New York Yankees lefty CC Sabathia has been in fine form, surrendering a combined two earned runs over his last three outings.

The Yanks are 2-1 in those three games and the big southpaw will get another chance to continue his strong pitching with the Chicago White Sox in town Friday evening.

New York heads into Friday's action three games behind the AL East-leading Toronto Blue Jays. Books are offering the Yankees in the -152 vicinity while the White Sox, who counter with Carlos Rodon, are around +140.

                    Marlins' Fernandez eyes home-dominance mark

The final home game of the year for the Miami Marlins is set for Sunday.

However, the spiritual end of the season will come Friday night, when Jose Fernandez -- who has never lost at home -- climbs the Marlins Park mound for the final time this year.

In 25 career home starts, the right-hander is an unfathomable 16-0 with a 1.11 ERA.

Since ERA became a stat in 1912, only one other pitcher had a lower ERA in his first 25 home starts -- Ferdie Schupp of the New York Giants, who had a 1.05 ERA from 1913-1917.

And that was during the "dead ball" era.

Fernandez deadens opponents' bats the old-fashioned way -- with an electric fastball and nasty breaking pitches.

With a win Friday, he would set the major league record for most consecutive home victories to start a career.
