    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- World-wide this year, 12 people have died while taking selfies. Seriously.
-- Andrew Luck is 26th in fantasy points amongst NFL quarterbacks.
-- Utah State's oft-injured QB Charlie Keeton is out 4-6 weeks again (knee).
-- Boise State QB Finley is also hurt and will be out for eight weeks.
-- Jon Lester picked off a runner in each of his last two starts; he went over a year without even trying a pickoff throw to first base.
-- Since 1990, 24 NFL teams have made the playoffs after an 0-2 start.
    **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Hump Day Happenings........

    13) Dallas traded for Buffalo backup QB Matt Cassel, who has a 34-38 record as an NFL QB, despite never starting a game in college, at USC, where he backed up both Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart. He lost his only playoff start, for the '10 Chiefs.

    12) Since 2006, seven Dallas QBs other than Tony Romo have started 21 Cowboy games and went 9-12 in those games.

    11) Green Bay Packers sold out their last 310 home games; thats roughly 37 years.

    10) Alabama ran 101 plays in its loss to Ole Miss Saturday; thats a lot. By way of comparison, Seattle-Green Bay game Sunday night had a total of 121 plays, Atlanta-Giant game had 115 plays, Saints-Buccaneers 128. More action in college football.

    9) UNLV cashed a $1M check for going to Michigan and playing the Wolverines last week; Mountain West teams have now lost 21 non-league games in a row to I-A teams but they do make a lot of money playing big-name schools on the road.

    8) Saints lost their last six home games, which is a disaster; very hard to make any hay in the NFL just by winning road games.

    7) Random story: I saw teachers in Seattle were on strike last week, which reminded me of when I was a junior in high school 40 years ago. Teachers at three high schools in our area went on strike at the same time, one of which was mine, so we had a different substitute teacher in class every day for 2-3 weeks.

Some kids who didn't like school bolted classes and held "protest marches" to the district offices to support the teachers. It was a couple miles from our high school to the district offices; if anyone thought I was walking four miles to support anyone they had another thing coming. All we had to do was go to class, do nothing, since we had all different teachers every day and we couldn't get in trouble. Not a tough decision.

Funny thing was that a lot of the teachers on strike were just going to one of the other districts and subbing, so they could earn money. The strike ended after a couple weeks with no one winning-- we were behind on our classes and that was the year I had the toughest classes. Hopefully the same thing won't happen in Seattle.

    6) On July 2, 2013, the Orioles traded Jake Arrieta/Pedro Strop to the Cubs and got Steve Clevenger/Scott Feldman in return. Whoops.

Arrieta was 20-25 in his 63 starts over 3.5 years with Baltimore; he is 34-13 in his 2+ years with the Cubs. Brutal move by the Orioles.

    5) Jets had 13 takeaways all of last year; they have ten in their first two games this year, the first team since the '92 Steelers (Bill Cowher's first year) to do that.

    4) I'm not a fan of college football's targeting rule; too harsh. If you're calling plays, it would be smart to throw long passes on the first series- you get a targeting call on an opposing DB, he is eliminated from the game, which could be a big deal.

    3) Mike Trout hit his 40th homer last night, joining Troy Glaus as the only Angels to hit 40+ homers in a season.

    2) Week 2 was the first time ever that the Raiders, Jaguars, Browns, Buccaneers and Redskins all won on the same day; that covers 17+ years of games, since Jacksonville came into the league in 1995, but the Browns were out of it from 1996-98.

    1) September baseball is great fun if your favorite team is contending; if not, then this is just glorified spring training, with the next "real games" 7-8 months away.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

The Georgia Bulldogs are 54-point favorites versus FCS Southern a week before facing Alabama. Feel like laying that massive pile of chalk in this lookahead spot?

      Letdown spot

The New York Yankees are chasing down the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East, currently visiting the Rogers Centre for three games this week. New York took a loss in the first game of that series Monday and, heading into Tuesday, sits 3.5 games behind Toronto. Whether the Bronx Bombers can gain some ground on the Jays may not matter when it comes to this potential letdown spot.

Following Wednesday’s finale in Toronto, New York is back home hosting the Chicago White Sox Thursday night. The Yankees will be coming down from an intense Game 3 against the Blue Jays, facing a ChiSox team that has won three of its last four on the road, and will have thrown everything but the kitchen sink at Toronto.

      Lookahead spot

We have a double lookahead spot this week with Alabama and Georgia on a collision course in the SEC next weekend. The Crimson Tide, who were knocked off by Ole Miss last Saturday, are monstrous 38-point favorites hosting UL Monroe. Nick Saban will be tightening the bolts on his program in preparation for UGA, which means trying some different things against the Warhawks which may keep Bama short of that big pile of chalk.

For the Bulldogs, they host FCS Southern Saturday and most books don’t have this “extra” on the board. Offshore spots braving the big spread have tagged Georgia as a huge 54-point favorite. The Dawgs smashed UL Monroe 51-14 as 35-point favorites in Week 1 but with Alabama up next, UGA will be trimming the starters’ minutes and holding back a good chunk of the playbook, not tipping their hand to Saban and the Tide.

      Schedule spot

The Baltimore Ravens are in panic mode in Week 3 after losing their first two games of the NFL season. Baltimore, which opened with back-to-back road games at Denver and Oakland, comes home to face the rival Cincinnati Bengals as 3-point favorites in Week 3 for what will be one of only two games inside M&T Bank Stadium in the first month and a half of the schedule.

Following the game with Cincinnati, the Ravens play in Pittsburgh on Thursday night in Week 4, then head back home for a meeting with Cleveland the following week. After that, Baltimore has another tough schedule with games at San Francisco and Arizona in Weeks 6 and 7. The team was planning on staying out west again, but after last week’s fiasco in the Bay Area they’re rethinking the travel strategy. All that worry about upcoming trips puts an extra emphasis on winning at home this week.

MLB roundup: Cubs' Arrieta first 20-game winner of season

CHICAGO -- Jake Arrieta became baseball's first 20-game winner of the season on Tuesday with a sharp complete-game outing in the Chicago Cubs' 4-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Arrieta (20-6) got all the support he needed on third baseman Kris Bryant's third inning two-run home run.

The Wrigley Field crowd stood on its feet and roared as Arrieta worked a one-two-three ninth that included two strikeouts.

The victory was the second straight and seventh in eight games for the Cubs (89-62) while the Brewers (63-88) dropped their second in a row and 10th in 11 games.

A Cy Young Award candidate, Arrieta scattered three hits, struck out 11 and walked just one in a complete-game collaboration with catcher Miguel Montero.

Arrieta, 29, is the Cubs' first 20-game winner since Jon Lieber went 20-6 in 2001 and 27th Cub since 1900 to reach that milestone in a season. It was his fifth straight outing of eight or more innings, his fourth complete game of the season and third complete-game shutout.

            Yankees 6, Blue Jays 4 (10 innings)

TORONTO -- Greg Bird hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning to lead New York past Toronto.

Blue Jays catcher Dioner Navarro had tied the game at 3 with a one-out homer in the bottom of the ninth against left-hander Andrew Miller (3-2). Carlos Beltran had homered against right-hander Liam Hendriks in the eighth to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead.

Miller, who returned for the bottom of the 10th, allowed the 35th homer of the season with one out by Blue Jays designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion in the extra inning.

The win brought the Yankees (83-67) to within 2 1/2 games of the first-place Blue Jays (86-65) in the American League East.

            Twins 3, Indians 1

MINNEAPOLIS -- Ervin Santana threw seven-plus innings of one-run ball as Minnesota defeated Cleveland at Target Field.

Santana scattered five hits and a walk while striking out seven for his sixth win this season and fourth in his last five starts. The veteran right hander has lasted at least seven innings in all five starts over that span, accumulating an ERA of 1.86 in 29 innings with 39 strikeouts and eight walks.

The top of the Twins order did the bulk of the damage, accounting for five of their eight hits, two of their three runs and all three RBIs. Aaron Hicks and Brian Dozier had two hits and an RBI double apiece.

            Mariners 11, Royals 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Robinson Cano homered twice and Hisashi Iwakuma pitched seven shutout innings as Seattle ripped Kansas City.

The Mariners hit five home runs, scoring all their runs in the first four innings.

Iwakuma (9-4) checked the Royals on three singles before being pulled after seven innings and 92 pitches. He struck out a season-high 10 and walked one.

            Orioles 4, Nationals 1

WASHINGTON -- Ubaldo Jimenez earned his 100th career victory as he gave up one unearned run in six innings, as Baltimore beat Washington.

The contest opened a three-game interleague series between teams trying to stave off elimination. The scheduled series opener was rained out Monday.

The Orioles prevailed behind two runs in the second inning and two more in the fifth. Jimenez (12-9) gave up three hits and five walks with five strikeouts while lowering his ERA to 4.16. He doubled his win total from a 6-9 season in 2014.

            Braves 6, Mets 2

NEW YORK -- Matt Wisler earned his first win in almost two months, and Jace Peterson and Hector Olivera each homered during a four-run fifth inning that lifted Atlanta past New York at Citi Field.

The Braves won for the fourth time in five games and scored more than three runs for the first time since Sept. 13.

Despite the loss, the Mets saw their magic number to win the National League East reduced to six by virtue of the Washington Nationals' 4-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

            Tigers 2, White Sox 1 (10 innings)

DETROIT -- Rajai Davis hit a walk-off triple in the 10th inning after Tyler Saladino's ninth-inning triple foiled Detroit's bid for a combined no-hitter as the Tigers defeated Chicago at Comerica Park.

The left fielder's seventh career walk-off hit -- a liner down the right-field line -- knocked in Anthony Gose, who drew a two-out walk against Zach Duke (3-6). Blaine Hardy (6-3) retired all three batters he faced in the top of the inning to get the victory as Detroit ended a three-game losing streak.

Tigers starter Daniel Norris tossed five perfect innings and relievers Buck Farmer, Ian Krol and Drew VerHagen threw a hitless inning apiece. The only White Sox baserunner during those frames was Adam Eaton, who was hit by a Krol pitch to start the seventh inning.

            Phillies 6, Marlins 2

MIAMI –- Right-hander Aaron Harang earned his first win since July 30, and Cody Asche hit two solo homers to lead Philadelphia to a win over Miami at Marlins Park.

Philadelphia, which snapped a six-game losing streak, has been bad against just about everyone else this season except Miami. The Phillies are 9-5 against the Marlins this season and 41 games under .500 against everyone else.

Harang (6-15) allowed seven hits, two walks and two runs in seven innings, shutting down the Marlins) in a battle between two of the worst teams in baseball. Half of Harang's wins this year have come against the Marlins (once) and Atlanta Braves (twice), two teams way under .500.

            Rays 5, Red Sox 2

BOSTON -- Evan Longoria's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to cross the plate and Tampa Bay held on for a win over Boston in the second of a three-game midweek series at Fenway Park.

The Rays' third baseman lofted a ball to deep right field with two outs in the sixth, letting Richie Shaffer tag from third to tie it at 2-2. Brandon Guyer also scored as Red Sox right fielder Mookie Betts' throw sailed over the catcher and out of play.

Mikie Mahtook put the game out of reach with a two-run home run in the eighth, as the Tampa Bay center fielder launched a pitch over the Green Monster in left to make it 5-2.

            Angels 4, Astros 3

HOUSTON -- Mike Trout and Albert Pujols smacked back-to-back home runs in the first inning and Los Angeles' bullpen piecemealed its way through a white-knuckle eighth inning in a win over Houston at Minute Maid Park.

The Angels snapped a six-game skid in Houston with their early power surge and by fending off an onslaught of Astros pinch hitters in the eighth -- five total were announced. Angels closer Huston Street struck out Jake Marisnick with two runners on base to close the inning after uncorking a wild pitch that allowed Jed Lowrie to score the Astros' third run.

Right-hander Trevor Gott and left-hander Jose Alvarez preceded Street out of the bullpen as the Angels closed to within 2 1/2 games of the Astros in the chase for the second American League wild card. The Twins beat the Indians 3-1 and moved to within two games of Houston.

            Cardinals 3, Reds 1

ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis starting pitcher John Lackey only retired Cincinnati one inning without allowing a baserunner, but the defense behind him was steady to lead the Cardinals to a win at Busch Stadium.

Lackey (13-9) fanned seven, scattered nine hits and did not walk a batter.

The Cardinals reduced the magic number to eight to clinch the National League Central title.

            Pirates 6, Rockies 3

DENVER -- Pittsburgh methodically scored in succession in the early innings, beating Colorado.

The Pirates were opportunistic as they scored in each of the first four innings, totaling their six runs in that span, all with two outs against Colorado starter Chris Rusin (5-9).

J.A. Happ (6-2), who the Pirates acquired from the Mariners for a minor league pitcher at the trade deadline, continued to pay big dividends. Happ (6-2) worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with one walk and eight strikeouts. Jared Hughes relieved him with a runner on first and got D.J. LeMahieu to ground into an inning-ending double play.

            Diamondbacks 8, Dodgers 0

LOS ANGELES -- A.J. Pollock and Paul Goldschmidt hit back-to-back homers in the seventh inning, sparking Arizona to a rout of Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium.

Robbie Ray delivered a solid outing as the Diamondbacks beat the Dodgers for the second night in a row. Arizona, which ended a nine-game losing streak at Dodger Stadium on Monday, extended the Dodgers' skid to a season-high four straight.

Ray (5-12) struck seven and walked two, limiting Los Angeles to three hits in six innings.

            Giants 4, Padres 2

SAN DIEGO -- Angel Pagan's two-run homer lifted San Francisco past San Diego. Pagan's blast in the seventh inning extended the Giants' lead after Brandon Crawford's two-out RBI single in the sixth.

The Giants gained ground on the NL West-leading Dodgers and trail Los Angeles by six games. San Francisco beat the Padres for the sixth straight time and in eight of the past nine games. San Diego fell 11 games under .500 as it dropped its eighth contest in 11 outings.

Tyson Ross (10-11) went six innings and surrendered two runs on four hits and two walks. He tied a career high with 11 strikeouts and ran his season total to a career-best 205.

            Rangers 8, A's 6

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Mitch Moreland hit his career-high-tying 23rd home run of the season, and Texas rallied to defeat Oakland at the O.co Coliseum.

Texas increased its lead in the American League West to two games over the Houston Astros.

The Rangers trailed 5-3 entering the sixth inning, but they scored three times to take a 6-5 lead.

Rays lefty Moore showing off past form

Matt Moore is starting to look more and more like the pre-Tommy John surgery Matt Moore.

The left-hander struggled through a two-run first inning at Fenway Park on Tuesday night. But he settled down and turned in a strong 6 2/3 to get his first win since July 12.

This effort came on the heels of Moore throwing seven shutout innings and allowing just two hits while striking out nine in Baltimore last week. He struck out seven on Tuesday.

Tropeano draws key start for Angels

Opportunity is coming sporadically for Los Angeles Angels right-hander Nick Tropeano this season -- one start each in April, July and August before three followed this month.

On Wednesday, the Angels' playoff hopes might hinge on his performance against his former club.

With a rainout last Friday in Minnesota pushing the start of left-hander Andrew Heaney back one day, Tropeano must fill in the gap in the series finale against the Houston Astros.

The Angels will enter 2 1/2 games behind Houston in the chase for the second American League wild card. Tropeano (2-2, 5.06 ERA) needs to pitch effectively against the organization that traded him along with catcher Carlos Perez on Nov. 5, 2014, for catcher Hank Conger.

Rangers 1B Moreland at home in Oakland's O.co Coliseum

The O.co Coliseum is supposed to be a pitcher-friendly park, but Rangers first baseman Mitch Moreland continued making himself at home there Tuesday night in an 8-6 victory against Oakland.

Moreland hit his career-high-tying 23rd home run of the season, a two-run shot in the sixth inning that tied the game 5-5 and ended A's left-hander Sean Nolin's night.

The home run was Moreland's 14th of his career against the A's, the most he has hit against any team. Moreland has 10 of those homers at the Coliseum, more than at any other road stadium. Moreland's blast Tuesday was also his career-high fifth against a left-hander.

Brewers bolster roster with six from Double-A

The Milwaukee Brewers added an infusion of Double-A talent to their big league roster Tuesday.

The Brewers called up six players from their Biloxi, Miss., affiliate following the completion of the Shuckers' season Monday, a three-games-to-two series loss to Chattanooga (a Minnesota Twins affiliate) for the Southern League championship.

Five of the six will get their first taste of the big leagues during the season's final 11 games.

Milwaukee recalled infielder Yadiel Rivera and right-hander Tyler Wagner.

The Brewers also selected the contracts of right-handers Yhonathan Barrios, Adrian Houser, Jorge Lopez and outfielder Michael Reed. Only Wagner has major league previous major league experience.

Rivera made his big league debut Tuesday in the Brewers' 4-0 loss to the Cubs, coming on as a sub and going 0-for-2. He batted .277 in 52 games for Biloxi and also played at Triple-A Colorado Springs this season.

Wagner posted an 11-5 record in 25 starts with the Shuckers and held opponents to a .235 collective batting average.

Barrios was acquired from Pittsburgh on July 23 in the Aramis Ramirez trade. A former infielder, he became a pitcher in 2013. In a combined 49 relief appearances between Double-A and Triple-A this year, he went 4-5 with 17 saves and a 2.83 ERA.

Houser, acquired on July 30 from the Houston Astros with three others in the Carlos Gomez trade, was 4-1 with a 2.92 ERA in seven regular-season starts for Biloxi. He threw a shutout in the first game of the Southern League playoffs.

Lopez went 12-5 with a 2.26 ERA in 24 games with Biloxi and was named Brewers' minor league pitcher of the year and the Southern League pitcher of the year. He also was a Southern League All-Star.

Reed batted .278 average with five homers and 49 RBIs in 93 games in Double-A. He was promoted Aug. 1 to Triple-A Colorado Springs, where he finished the regular season before joining Biloxi for the Southern League playoffs.

One day after declaring Jimmy Nelson finished for the season, Milwaukee placed the right-hander on the 60-day disabled list due to a head contusion. Right-hander Michael Blazek (fractured right hand) also moved from the 15-day to 60-day DL, with both moves clearing spots on the 40-man roster for newly promoted players.

Verlander strugging to get wins at home

Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander has struggled at home, posting a 1-6 mark despite registering a 1.15 WHIP in 10 starts at Comerica Park this season.

Verlander is probable to get the start for the Tigers when they host the Chicago White Sox Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers are currently being offered around -145 while the Pale Hose, who are projected to counter with Francellis Montas, are +134.

Game of the Day: Yankees at Blue Jays
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rookie Greg Bird has homered in three consecutive games and gone deep five times in the last seven contests.

New York Yankees at Toronto Blue Jays (-180, 8.5)

Following Monday's series-opening loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi said his club had to win the next two games to have any chance of claiming the American League East title. New York eked out a 6-4 victory Tuesday and looks to inch closer to the first-place Blue Jays in Wednesday's rubber match in Toronto.

Rookie Greg Bird, playing every day after first baseman Mark Teixeira was lost for the season, has homered in three consecutive games and gone deep five times in the last seven contests. Bird has seven RBIs in the last three games after belting a tiebreaking three-run shot in the 10th inning Tuesday to draw the Yankees within 2 1/2 games of Toronto. Carlos Beltran has homered twice and knocked in seven runs in the last four contests for New York while Edwin Encarnacion has five blasts in the past 10 games for the Blue Jays. Toronto sends Marcus Stroman to the mound to oppose Ivan Nova in the series finale.

7:07 p.m. ET, ESPN, YES (New York), RSN (Toronto)

                      LINE HISTORY:
The Jays opened -165 but are now in the -180 vicinity. The total opened at 9 and is down to 8.5.

                      INJURY REPORT:
Yankees - 1B Mark Teixeira (Out for season, shin). Blue Jays - SS Troy Tulowitzki (Late September, shoulder).

                      WHAT CAPPERS SAY:
"The Jays suffered a blow when Troy Tulowitzki collided with Kevin Pillar and broke his shoulder. Tulo is out for at least two weeks, but if they can wrap up the East without him - which they should - and then get their All-Star SS back for the playoffs, they should be even stronger going forward."

                      PITCHING MATCHUP:
Yankees RH Ivan Nova (6-8, 5.11 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH Marcus Stroman (2-0, 3.00)

Nova was removed from the starting rotation after he was battered by the Blue Jays for six runs in 1 2/3 innings on Sept. 12, but Masahiro Tanaka's injury opened the door for him to make another start. Nova has permitted at least three runs in seven consecutive starts, which includes back-to-back outings against Toronto on Aug. 8 and 14. He split a pair of decisions against the Jays, winning at Toronto with seven innings of three-run ball.

Stroman will make his third start since returning from surgery on a torn ACL sustained during spring training. The former first-round draft pick won his season debut against the Yankees on Sept. 12, allowing three runs on four hits over five innings to improve to 3-1 with a 3.18 ERA in four career starts against New York. Stroman was much sharper in his last turn against Boston, going seven innings and yielding one run on six hits.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Yankees are 1-4 in Nova's last five starts.
                      * Blue Jays are 6-1 in Stroman's last seven home starts.
                      * Under is 5-1 in Nova's last six road starts.
                      * Under is 8-1-2 in Stroman's last 11 home starts.

                      CONSENSUS:
Sixty-four percent of users are backing the Jays.
