    Sparks-Lynx Preview

The Los Angeles Sparks have been dealing with adversity throughout the season.

Heading into their biggest game of the year, they've been dealt another major blow.

The Sparks are unsure of the status of three-time All-Star Nneka Ogwumike for Tuesday night's decisive Game 3 of their Western Conference semifinal series against the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx.

Ogwumike left in the third quarter of Sunday's 81-71 win with a neck strain after she was struck in a tangle of players in the paint.

''She wasn't feeling very good, obviously,'' coach Brian Agler said. ''I don't know what the status will be on Tuesday with her.''

If Ogwumike, second on the team with 16.5 points and 7.3 rebounds, can't play, it would just be the latest obstacle for the Sparks, who did not have Candace Parker and other key players to start this season and began 2-12.

Facing elimination Sunday, Parker carried Los Angeles to its first playoff win in two years, finishing with 25 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Rookie Ana Dabovic had a career-high 19 points for the Sparks, who led by 22 in the second quarter.

''You never want to be in a situation where you're down by that much on the road against a team that's fighting for a championship like we are,'' Minnesota's Maya Moore said. ''We didn't hang our head. We didn't give up. We tried to still make plays. But with that big of a hole, it's hard. It hard mentally. It's hard emotionally to not get frustrated.''

The Sparks have had plenty to potentially get frustrated about this season - they were forced to move Game 2 to Long Beach State because the Emmy Awards were being held Sunday night near Staples Center - but have not been deterred.

''I think that that's what so great about our team,'' Parker said. ''We've been through everything this year - injuries, people coming in and out. We've had to fight the whole year. This is something we didn't really talk about.''

Parker had 16 points and nine rebounds Friday as the Sparks nearly stole the opener, falling 67-65.

Although the Lynx are 17-2 at home in the playoffs - the best home winning percentage for any team the postseason - and have advanced to the last four conference finals, Parker remains confident.

''Minnesota did what they were supposed to do,'' Parker said. ''Now we have to do what we are supposed to do."

The Sparks are a win away from advancing to their first conference finals series since 2012 despite having no answer for Moore.

After scoring a playoff career-high 33 points and adding four steals in Game 1, she scored 27 and had another four steals Sunday. Moore has made 22 of 43 shots - 8 of 16 from 3-point range. The rest of the team is 2 of 12 from beyond the arc.

Sylvia Fowles, second on Minnesota with 15.3 points per game, has totaled 15 points in the first two contests.

      Dodgers, D-backs meet up

      September 22, 2015

ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (72-78) at LOS ANGELES DODGERS (85-64)

First pitch: Tuesday, 10:10 p.m. ET
      Sportsbook.ag Line: Arizona +155, Los Angeles -165, Total: 7.5

The Dodgers look to avoid losing their fourth straight game when they host the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.

The Diamondbacks are not going to make the postseason this year, but they are a tough team and come into this one after having won three of their past four games and four of their past six. The Dodgers, meanwhile, have not been playing their best baseball lately. They have lost their past three games and hold only a seven-game lead on the Giants in the division. The Dodgers will need to pick up some wins in the remainder of this series against the Diamondbacks, as they’ll be facing San Francisco in a four-game set in the near future.

This game will feature a pair of lefties on the mound, as LHP Robbie Ray (4-12, 3.72 ERA, 101 K) of the Diamondbacks takes on LHP Alex Wood (11-10, 3.63 ERA, 128 K) of the Dodgers. This head-to-head matchup has been all Los Angeles recently, as the Dodgers are 11-5 against the Diamondbacks this season and 6-1 when playing as the host. One thing favoring Arizona is the fact that the team is 10-3 against the money line in road games after three straight games where nobody committed an error this season. The Diamondbacks are, however, a lousy 16-35 against the money line after having won three of their past four games over the past two seasons.

C Tuffy Gosewisch (Knee) is out for the season for Arizona and Los Angeles will likely be without 3B Justin Turner (Knee) in addition to SS Jimmy Rollins (Finger) and OF Yasiel Puig (Hamstring), who are both out indefinitely for the team.

The Diamondbacks have won three of their past four games and now send Robbie Ray to the mound against a struggling Dodgers squad. Ray struggled in his most recent start, pitching just 4.2 innings against the Padres on Sep. 16 and allowing four earned runs in the loss. He did, however, shut down the Dodgers on Sep. 11. He pitched 5.0 innings and didn’t allow a single earned run in that start. He’ll need to channel that and put forth a solid effort on Tuesday.

1B Paul Goldschmidt (.316, 29 HR, 101 RBI) hit a homer in the 8-4 victory on Monday and he was 2-for-4 with two runs in the game. Goldschmidt will be very excited to be going up against Wood on Tuesday, as he is 4-for-7 with two homers and four RBI against the pitcher in his career.

OF Yasmany Tomas (.282, 9 HR, 46 RBI) hit his first homer since Aug. 21 on Monday night. The Diamondbacks would love to get him going against, as he can be a force at the plate when he is seeing the ball well. OF A.J. Pollock (.320, 17 HR, 68 RBI) is on a 10-game hitting streak entering this game. He is always a threat at the plate and will need to provide some production in order to help out Goldschmidt.

Alex Wood is coming off of his best start in a Dodgers uniform, pitching eight innings and allowing just one hit in a shutout against the Rockies on Sep. 16. He struck out five batters in that game and didn’t walk one. While that was an extremely impressive outing, he did struggle the last time he faced the Diamondbacks. Wood couldn’t get out of the second inning just two starts ago against this team, allowing six earned runs on eight hits in 1.2 innings of work versus Arizona on Sep. 11. He’ll need to figure himself out and avoid another outing like that on Tuesday.

1B Adrian Gonzalez (.281, 28 HR, 87 RBI) struggled offensively late in August and early in September, but he has found his swing recently. Over the past 10 games, Gonzalez has seen his average rise from .276 to .281. He homered in the loss to the Diamondbacks on Monday and will need to keep producing at the plate for this team.

2B Howie Kendrick (.294, 9 HR, 50 RBI) is another guy who can help this team offensively. Kendrick missed a month due to a hamstring injury and is just 1-for-6 at the plate since returning, but he had a streak of five straight multi-hit games before going down. He’ll need to knock off the rust and get this team back on the right path or the division lead could start to slip out of the Dodgers’ hands.
