    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Some more NFL trends to ponder with Week 2 approaching........-- Jacksonville is 12-28-1 vs spread in non-divisional games.-- Packers are 17-8-1 vs spread as non-divisional home favorites.-- Washington is 7-17 vs spread as an underdog. Rams were last 2-0 in 2001.-- Cowboys are 18-8 vs spread as road underdogs.-- Arizona is 19-5-1 vs spread in last 25 non-divisional games.-- Eagles covered twice in their last nine home openers.

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend.......

    13) Miami Dolphins are trying to start season with back-back wins as road favorites; over last decade, NFL teams in this position are 30-26 vs spread.

    12) Not a great college football card this week; Ole Miss-Alabama is probably the best game. Rebels beat Bama last year, first time in last 11 meetings.

    11) Giants desperately need a win to take the stink away from last week's game in Dallas. Falcons come to the Swamp on a short week after hanging on vs Philly.

    10) Astros' dream season is turning into a nightmare, but now they're home where they play much better. Houston hopes Angels-Twins knock each other off this week, so they can pull ahead in Wild Card race.

    9) Rex Ryan has spent his entire head coaching career in AFC East, where Brady's Patriots have been his nemesis; he gets another shot at them Sunday, in what should be a very raucous Rich Stadium.

    8) Can Notre Dame defend Georgia Tech's option offense? Hard to prepare for the option in one week. Plus the Irish have a freshman QB making his first start.

    7) Huge test for an improved Rams squad that hasn't been 2-0 since 2001. They're the better team here, but they beat the Seahawks last week and this is a trap game against a Washington team that only allowed one offensive TD to Miami last week.

    6) Best under-the-radar college game: Memphis at Bowling Green. Lot of offense.

    5) Who starts at QB for Cleveland? Marcus Mariota had a great debut on the road, now he is on road again. Browns' 3rd-string QB Austin Davis is better than Manziel.

    4) Cal Golden Bears are road favorites for first time since 2012: athletic department at Texas is a mess- they fired the AD this week, changed football play callers the week before. Some of the big money boosters must be wondering whats up.

    3) Seattle's pass defense fell apart in last minute at St Louis last week, now they're visiting Aaron Rodgers at Lambeau after beating Green Bay twice LY, including a bitter OT playoff loss. If Packers win, Kam Chancellor's agent is a happy man.

    2) Underdogs covered nine of last 12 Stanford-USC games. Cardinal has struggled on road recently; this is a pivotal early season Pac-12 game.

    1) Cowboys-Eagles. Demarco Murray against his old team. Road teams have owned this series in recent years. Philly is on short week after a loss; this game means more to them at this point, but Dallas has the better quarterback.

MLB roundup: Cubs inch closer to top wild-card spot

PITTSBURGH -- Anthony Rizzo's two-run home run, his 30th of the season, started a six-run fifth inning as the Chicago Cubs rallied for a 9-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday afternoon to take three of four games in the series between National League contenders.

The Cubs turned a 4-3 deficit into a 9-4 lead with the fifth-inning outburst that included a two-run double by left-handed reliever Clayton Richard and RBI singles by Addison Russell and Tommy La Stella.

The Cubs got within two games of the Pirates for the first wild-card berth in the National League.

Kris Bryant had his second straight three-hit game and La Stella and Russell drove in two runs each and were two of four Chicago players with two hits along with Rizzo and Dexter Fowler.

              Athletics 4, White Sox 2

CHICAGO -- Billy Butler hit a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning lead Oakland to a comeback victory over the Chicago White Sox.

With runners on first and third and one out, Butler hit a drive off Chicago closer David Robertson to the opposite field. Avisail Garcia jumped and got a glove on the ball, but the contact with the wall jarred the ball loose and it fell into the visiting bullpen.

Robertson has blown seven saves this season. Left-hander Sean Doolittle pitched the final two innings for the win.

              Blue Jays 5, Braves 0

ATLANTA -- Marco Estrada scattered three hits over eight shutout innings and Toronto connected for three home runs while blanking Atlanta at Turner Field.

The Blue Jays got all the runs they needed in the fourth inning, when Edwin Encarnacion and Cliff Pennington hit long home runs to produce four runs. Josh Donaldson hit a solo homer -- his 39th -- in the ninth inning. Toronto has hit a league-leading 207 homers this season.

The losing pitcher was rookie Matt Wisler, who allowed four runs on nine hits in six innings. Wisler struck out three and walked two. Wisler has lost seven straight and has not won since July 26 at St. Louis.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB betting cheat sheet: Battle of the bottom feeders
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Atlanta Braves have really struggled at home, losing 14 of their last 15 at Turner Field.

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the weekend major-league schedule:

                  Houston.. We Have a Problem!

The Astros are now 2.5 games out of first place after losing four straight to the Rangers in Texas. The good news is that they are still 1.5 games ahead of the Twins for the final Wild Card spot, and they play their next nine games at home at Minute Maid Park. Houston will host the last-place A's in a three-game series over the weekend, and the odds are in their favor. The Astros have been a good bet at home, going 40-15 in their last 55 games in Houston.

                  Capital Punishment

The Nationals have fallen apart in the second half of the season, while the Marlins are enjoying their role as spoiler. Miami has won 12 of it's last 16 overall, including taking 2-of-3 in a home series versus Washington last week. After upsetting the Nats in the series opener on Thursday, they will finish out a four-game set at Nationals Park over the weekend. Jose Fernandez will get the nod for the Fish on Friday, and he's 2-0 with an 0.82 ERA against the Nats this season.

                  Battle of the Bottom Feeders

Things have gotten ugly in Atlanta, as the Braves have not been at all competitive in the second half of the season. They've really struggled at home, losing 14 of their last 15 at Turner Field. They host Philadelphia this weekend, and the Phillies have lost 11 of their last 14 overall. The Phillies hand the ball to rookie Adam Morgan in Game 1, and he's 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA against Atlanta.

                  Hitting Notes

                  * The Boston Red Sox lead the major leagues batting .288 in day games in 2015, and they will play matinees at Toronto on Saturday and Sunday. Boston has won three of it's last four versus Toronto, scoring in double digits in all three wins.

                  * Nobody has been swinging a hotter bat than Joey Votto in the second half of the season. Votto is batting .374 with a dozen home runs and 31 RBIs since the All Star break.

                  Pitching Notes

                  * Jake Arrieta failed to record his 20th win of the season despite tossing a gem at Pittsburgh his last time out. Arrieta went eight innings, allowing one earned run and striking out five, but the Cubs needed extra-innings to get by the Pirates and Jake got the no-decision. He'll get another chance on Tuesday against the Brewers.

                  * Cole Hamels is enjoying a six game unbeaten streak, and he's set to make his next start at home against Seattle on Saturday. He's 4-1 with a 3.99 ERA in his last 10 starts.

                  Totals Streak

                  * The Detroit Tigers will host the Royals at Comerica Park over the weekend, and these teams have pushed the total over the number in each of the last four head to head meetings. Detroit has been one of the best bets to go over all season long, and the over is 6-2-1 in the Tigers last nine overall.

                  Injury Notes

                  * Pirates SS Jung Ho Kang suffered a gruesome injury when Chris Coghlan came in for a hard slide at second base in yesterday's game. He's out for the season with a torn MCL and a broken fibula.

                  * Joe Kelly will miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury, and he had been pitching well for the Red Sox. He was 8-1 with a 3.77 ERA in his last 11 starts.

                  Umpire Notes

                  * The Under has gone 7-1 in the last eight ball games that umpire Chris Conroy has worked behind home plate. He'll be calling balls and strikes in Washington when the Marlins visit the Nats Friday.

                  Weather Notes

                  * Wind will be blowing in from right field at roughly 11 miles per hour at Rangers Ballpark when the Texas Rangers host the Seattle Mariners Friday evening.

                  * It could also be windy in Cleveland Saturday as forecasts predict winds of up to 18 miles per hour blowing in from left field when the Indians host the Chicago White Sox.

Under wagers in hot with Conroy behind home plate

The Under has gone 7-1 in the last eight ball games that umpire Chris Conroy has worked behind home plate. Conroy is scheduled to call balls and strikes in Washington when the Nationals host the Miami Marlins Friday evening.

Season to date, Conroy has worked home plate in 25 games with the under holding the slight edge at 11-13 O/U. There has been an average of 7.92 runs scored per game when he works home plate.

Jose Fernandez and Max Scherzer are probable to start for the Marlins and Nats respectively. The total is currently pegged at 6.5.
