Preview: Mariners (71-76) at Rangers (79-67)
    Game: 1
Venue: Globe Life Park in Arlington
    Date: September 18, 2015 8:05 PM EDT

The Texas Rangers turned what was supposed to be an evenly matched series for the division lead into a statement boasting that they're the team to beat in the AL West.

Suffering a letdown against the Seattle Mariners could make that a moot point.

Texas looks to win six straight for the first time in nearly four months when it opens a three-game set against visiting Seattle on Friday night.

The Rangers (79-67) trailed Houston by 1 1/2 games entering Monday, then outscored the Astros 33-13 during a four-game sweep to climb 2 1/2 ahead in the West.

They sat two games under .500 and were fighting for the AL's second wild card on Aug. 12, but they've gone 24-10 since. Mitch Moreland delivered the biggest blow in Thursday's 8-2 win, belting a three-run homer in the third inning that put Texas ahead for good.

Shin-soo Choo matched a career high with four hits and is batting .500 over his last seven for the Rangers, who are on the verge of their first six-game winning streak since a season-high seven-game run May 20-26.

"It was definitely a complete series for us," Moreland said. "Each game seemed like a complete win. We created a lot of opportunities on the offense side, and we were able to capitalize."

Texas has averaged 7.4 runs over its last seven, a stretch that began immediately after being shut out in back-to-back games by the Mariners (71-76) on Sept. 9 and 10.

The Rangers are only 6-10 this season against Seattle, which just put a dent in another West foe's playoff hopes by taking two of three from the Los Angeles Angels.

The Mariners are hitting .273 while going 10-5 this month after Wednesday's 3-1 victory. Mark Trumbo hasn't contributed much to Seattle's improved hitting lately, though, going 2 for 20 with eight strikeouts over his last six.

He's 3 for 6 this season off Yovani Gallardo (12-10, 3.35 ERA), who looks to bounce back from a rough outing.

Gallardo went 4-0 with a 1.93 ERA over a six-start stretch capped by 5 1-3 innings that helped beat Seattle 3-0 on Sept. 7. He followed that by giving up five runs in 4 1-3 innings of Saturday's 5-3 loss to Oakland, his first defeat since July 19.

"I have to figure it out, I have to make adjustments," Gallardo said.

The right-hander should take notes from his starts against Seattle this season. He's 2-1 with a 1.56 ERA in those three outings and didn't allow a run in two of them.

James Paxton (3-4, 3.82) wasn't nearly that good the last time he faced the Rangers, giving up seven runs and 10 hits in 2 2-3 innings April 19 before the Mariners rallied for an 11-10 win.

The left-hander allowed one run over 12 2-3 innings in two starts against Texas last season, and he's hoping he can rediscover that form in his second start since spending over three months on the disabled list with a strained tendon in his left middle finger.

Paxton returned Sunday and allowed three runs - two earned - and walked three in three innings of a 3-2 loss to Colorado. The left-hander had an 85-pitch limit, but he threw only 66 despite giving up just two hits.

"It's been a long, long season waiting to get back out there," Paxton said. "If I had better fastball command and was getting ahead of guys more often it would have allowed me to go deeper in the game."

Seattle has won seven of the last 10 meetings in Arlington.

Preview: Angels (74-72) at Twins (75-71)
      Game: 2
      Venue: Target Field
      Date: September 18, 2015 8:10 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Angels are in a stretch of 10 of 13 games against the two teams they're chasing for the AL's second wild card.

They're making good use of the head-to-heads so far.

A fourth win in five such games could come Friday night in Minnesota, while the Twins will try to stop squandering their chances to catch Houston.

The Angels (74-72) opened the series with Thursday's 11-8 victory, winning their fifth in a row at Target Field and moving to 10-1 against the Twins since the start of 2014.

The win also pulled them within a game of Minnesota (75-71) and 2 1/2 of the Astros, who lost their fourth straight. Los Angeles beat Houston in two of three last weekend and heads to Minute Maid Park for three beginning Monday.

Los Angeles, which is 20-32 with an MLB-low .230 average since July 23, got the kind of offensive night its been starved of for much of the second half.

Mike Trout was 2 for 3 with a grand slam and solo home run, giving him four in five games and a career-high 38. He's one shy of Reggie Jackson (1982) and Vladimir Guerrero (2004) for third on the franchise's single-season list. Troy Glaus, who hit 47 in 2000 and 41 the next year, is the only Angel to reach 40.

"It's September. We got to go now," Trout said. "It's time to go. We've got like (16) games left and every one of them is going to be big. We've got to win them all."

Minnesota has dropped three in a row despite Torii Hunter's continued production. The 40-year-old is batting .405 with 10 RBIs in his last nine games.

"I don't care who you're with, it's no fun to see Trout get five RBIs and two home runs and that offense just took off like that," said Hunter, who homered for the second time in four games. "It's no fun to be on that side."

Trout's been far less to blame for the offensive struggles than Albert Pujols, who was 0 for 4 Thursday for a third straight game and has hit .152 in his last 18. Among active ballparks, Target Field is the only one where he hasn't hit multiple home runs, and his .594 OPS there is his lowest among the 38 venues he's played in.

Neither big bat has done much against Mike Pelfrey, who's been struggling after a lengthy honeymoon in his return from missing nearly all of 2014.

Pelfrey (6-9, 4.09 ERA) is 1-7 with a 5.51 ERA in his last 16 starts after going 5-2 with a 2.28 ERA in his first 11. Since his last win Aug. 12, he's 0-2 with a 6.26 mark in five. After consecutive losses, the right-hander kept the team in a 3-2 win at Kansas City on Sept. 9 by limiting the Royals to a run and five hits over 5 1-3 innings.

During a 5-2 road loss July 22, Pelfrey gave up four runs - two earned - and nine hits to fall to 3-2 with a 3.94 ERA in five starts against the Angels. Chris Iannetta homered and is 6 for 13 against the 31-year-old, but Trout is 1 for 7 and Pujols 4 for 17.

The Angels counter with Andrew Heaney, who's now passed Hector Santiago for the top ERA in the rotation.

Heaney (6-3, 3.32) did his part in Sunday's 5-3 home loss to Houston, allowing six hits and keeping the Astros scoreless through five innings, though it was the second straight start in which he stuck the bullpen with four innings of work.

The left-hander has been at his best on the road with a 3-1 record and 2.11 ERA in six starts as opposed to 3-2 with a 4.24 mark at home.

Preview: Athletics (63-84) at Astros (77-70)
        Game: 1
        Venue: Minute Maid Park
        Date: September 18, 2015 8:10 PM EDT

A bitter sweep at the hands of the AL West-leading Texas Rangers put the Houston Astros' division chances at risk while also moving their wild-card advantage into the red category.

The Astros hope to reverse their luck against the league's worst team and strengthen their postseason spot when they open a series against the visiting Oakland Athletics on Friday night.

Houston (77-70) lost eight times on a 10-game road trip, the last four against Texas to swap their 1 1/2-game division lead with a 2 1/2-game deficit. The Astros sat atop the West for 49 consecutive days but are now positioned 1 1/2 games ahead of Minnesota for the second wild card.

'It's difficult to absorb these losses when we've put so much time and energy in,' manager A.J. Hinch said. 'Obviously, we feel pretty bad about the way these four games went.'

The perfect rebound would typically come against the last-place Athletics (63-84), but the A's have won five of their last six against Houston.

Oakland has lost 10 of 15 in September but was responsible for Mike Fiers' only loss since coming to the Astros in a trade from Milwaukee on July 30.

Fiers (2-1, 3.07 ERA) held Oakland to one run in 6 2-3 innings but didn't factor into the decision of a 5-4 loss on Aug. 9. His second career start against the A's resulted in four runs over five innings of a 10-9 loss on Sept. 7.

Both of those games came on the road, though, where Fiers is 1-1 with a 4.55 ERA in five appearances with the Astros - four starts. The right-hander hasn't allowed an earned run in two outings at Minute Maid Park, including his no-hitter against the Los Angeles Dodgers last month.

Fiers surrendered three solo home runs in seven innings to the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday while not factoring into the decision of a 5-3 win. He will welcome a return home, where the Astros are an AL-best 48-24.

Houston finishes a nine-game homestand against the Rangers from Sept. 25-27 before closing the season at Seattle and Arizona.

'There's nothing really we can do but work on it, be a little more tough-minded and get home in front of our fans and play our brand of baseball that we've been accustomed to for five-plus months,' Hinch said.

Oakland will try to win its third straight series against Houston with Felix Doubront on the mound.

Doubront (3-2, 4.99) makes his eighth appearance and sixth start since coming over from Toronto at the trade deadline. He earned a win over the Astros two starts ago, allowing four runs in six innings of a 10-9 victory.

The left-hander has an 8.27 ERA in his last three starts, bloated from the seven runs he surrendered over 4 1-3 innings in a 12-4 loss to Texas on Sunday. Doubront served up three home runs for the first time in his career, and he was charged with six of the Rangers' seven runs between the fourth and fifth innings.

'I was throwing the ball really good until those innings," said Doubront, who is 2-0 with a 4.97 ERA against Houston.

Colby Rasmus is 7 for 17 with a home run, two doubles and two triples against Doubront.

Houston's Jason Castro went 1 for 2 in Thursday's loss after missing 16 games with a right quadriceps strain. Jed Lowrie was 1 for 4 in his return after getting hit by a pitch on the left shin Monday.

                            Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Some more NFL trends to ponder with Week 2 approaching........

-- Jacksonville is 12-28-1 vs spread in non-divisional games.--

Packers are 17-8-1 vs spread as non-divisional home favorites.

-- Washington is 7-17 vs spread as an underdog. Rams were last 2-0 in 2001.

-- Cowboys are 18-8 vs spread as road underdogs.

-- Arizona is 19-5-1 vs spread in last 25 non-divisional games.

-- Eagles covered twice in their last nine home openers.

                            **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend.......

                            13) Miami Dolphins are trying to start season with back-back wins as road favorites; over last decade, NFL teams in this position are 30-26 vs spread.

                            12) Not a great college football card this week; Ole Miss-Alabama is probably the best game. Rebels beat Bama last year, first time in last 11 meetings.

                            11) Giants desperately need a win to take the stink away from last week's game in Dallas. Falcons come to the Swamp on a short week after hanging on vs Philly.

                            10) Astros' dream season is turning into a nightmare, but now they're home where they play much better. Houston hopes Angels-Twins knock each other off this week, so they can pull ahead in Wild Card race.

                            9) Rex Ryan has spent his entire head coaching career in AFC East, where Brady's Patriots have been his nemesis; he gets another shot at them Sunday, in what should be a very raucous Rich Stadium.

                            8) Can Notre Dame defend Georgia Tech's option offense? Hard to prepare for the option in one week. Plus the Irish have a freshman QB making his first start.

                            7) Huge test for an improved Rams squad that hasn't been 2-0 since 2001. They're the better team here, but they beat the Seahawks last week and this is a trap game against a Washington team that only allowed one offensive TD to Miami last week.

                            6) Best under-the-radar college game: Memphis at Bowling Green. Lot of offense.

                            5) Who starts at QB for Cleveland? Marcus Mariota had a great debut on the road, now he is on road again. Browns' 3rd-string QB Austin Davis is better than Manziel.

                            4) Cal Golden Bears are road favorites for first time since 2012: athletic department at Texas is a mess- they fired the AD this week, changed football play callers the week before. Some of the big money boosters must be wondering whats up.

                            3) Seattle's pass defense fell apart in last minute at St Louis last week, now they're visiting Aaron Rodgers at Lambeau after beating Green Bay twice LY, including a bitter OT playoff loss. If Packers win, Kam Chancellor's agent is a happy man.

                            2) Underdogs covered nine of last 12 Stanford-USC games. Cardinal has struggled on road recently; this is a pivotal early season Pac-12 game.

                            1) Cowboys-Eagles. Demarco Murray against his old team. Road teams have owned this series in recent years. Philly is on short week after a loss; this game means more to them at this point, but Dallas has the better quarterback.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 13

                                September 14, 2015

The back-end of three home-and-home series dominated the CFL schedule in Week 12 with two of the three teams gaining their revenge by earning a split. Hamilton was the only team to pull-off the sweep with its 35-27 victory against Toronto as a five-point road favorite last Friday night.

In the first of two Saturday games, Winnipeg turned the tables on Saskatchewan with a 22-7 victory as a slight 1 ½-point home underdog. Later in the day, Edmonton pulled-off a huge 27-16 win over Calgary as a one-point favorite at home to keep the West Division title race tight. Week 12 in the CFL closed things out on Sunday with Ottawa stunning British Columbia 31-18 as a four-point road underdog.

                                Friday, Sept. 18

British Columbia Lions (4-6 SU, 4-6 ATS) vs. Calgary Stampeders (8-3 SU, 3-8 ATS)

                                Point-spread: Calgary -11 ½
                                Total: 48

                                Game Overview

The Lions’ loss this past Sunday was their third in the last four games both straight-up and against the spread. The total has now stayed UNDER in their last three outings. BC has fallen to sixth in the CFL in scoring with an average of 22.2 points a game. John Beck was the starting quarterback in that loss and while he did complete 20-of-29 passes for 209 yards, he was picked-off twice and sacked three times.

Calgary is still leading the West by one game despite last week’s loss. That loss snapped a SU five-game winning streak but the Stampeders have gone 3-3 ATS in its last six games. The total has stayed UNDER in its last three outings. Bo Levi Mitchell put the ball up 41 times against Edmonton for 244 yards and a score, but he was also intercepted two times on the day.

                                Betting Trends

Calgary has covered ATS in 17 of its last 25 games against the Lions and the total has gone OVER in the last six meetings. This will be the first meeting this season.

                                Saturday, Sept. 19

Edmonton Eskimos (7-4 SU, 7-4 ATS) vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (8-3 SU, 9-2 ATS)

                                Point-spread: Hamilton -6 ½
                                Total: 51

                                Game Overview

The Eskimos will quickly have to put last week’s big win behind them in what could possibly be a preview of this season’s Grey Cup Championship. Edmonton got a big effort from quarterback Mike Reilly in that win over the Stampeders in just his third game of action this season due to injuries. He only completed 22-of-40 attempts, but he still threw for 352 yards and three scores.

Hamilton remains the team to beat in the East and it comes into this matchup having already beaten the Eskimos on the road in a 49-20 romp on Aug. 21 as a two-point road favorite. Zach Collaros added another 254 passing yards to his CFL-high 3,286 yards in last Friday’s road win against Toronto. The Tiger-Cats are now averaging a CFL-high 35.6 points a game, while holding opponents to 20.1 points a game.

                                Betting Trends

Edmonton has failed to cover in 15 of its last 22 games against Hamilton and the total has stayed UNDER in six of their last eight road games against the Tiger-Cats.

Ottawa RedBlacks (6-4 SU, 7-3 ATS) vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders (1-10 SU, 3-8 ATS)
                                Point-spread: Saskatchewan -2
                                Total: 50 ½

                                Game Overview

Ottawa continues to put together a very productive 2015 campaign in its second season as the expansion RedBlacks. In Sunday’s win in BC, running back Jeremiah Johnson anchored the running game with 100 yards rushing on 17 carries and wide receiver Brad Sinopoli hauled-in six catches for 102 yards from quarterback Henry Burris. Burris is now third in the league this season in passing yards with 2,921.

The Roughriders fell back into their old ways last week after winning their first game of the season to open the recent home-and-home series against Winnipeg. Brett Smith only managed to complete 13-of-28 passes for 114 yards, but he led the team in rushing with 53 yards on four attempts. Saskatchewan’s defense has not helped the cause with a points-allowed average of 30.5 that is the highest in the CFL.

                                Betting Trends

Ottawa has already beaten the Roughriders this season in a 35-13 romp on Aug. 30 as a three-point home favorite. The total stayed UNDER the 51-point closing line. Saskatchewan won both meetings last season SU while going 1-1 ATS.

                                Sunday, Sept. 20

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (4-7 SU, 4-6-1 ATS) vs. Montreal Alouettes (4-6 SU, 5-4-1 ATS)

                                Point-spread: Montreal -10
                                Total: 42

                                Game Overview

The Blue Bombers did wonders for their playoff chances with last week’s win to remain a half-game in back of BC for third place in the West. Quarterback Matt Nichols, who started the season with Edmonton, completed 21-of-30 passes for 283 yards and a score in that game. He also carried the ball seven times for 36 yards as Winnipeg rolled-up 117 yards on the ground.

Montreal is coming off a bye week after losing to BC 25-16 in Week 11 as a 4.5-point home favorite. It is now 2-4 SU in its last six games and 3-3 ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in its last four games and in nine of 10 games on the year. The Alouettes are only averaging 20.7 points a game, but they have one of the top defenses in the CFL in points allowed (19.6).

                                Betting Trends

Winnipeg has covered in six of its last seven road games against Montreal and it is 5-1 SU in its last six games on the road in this series. The Blue Bombers won the first meeting this season 25-23 on July 10 as two-point home favorites. The total stayed UNDER the 53 ½-point closing line.
