    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Six of the more intriguing college football games this weekend.......
-- Clemson @ Louisville-- Cardinals lost as 13-point favorites Saturday, will be 0-3 if they lose this game.
-- Georgia Tech @ Notre Dame-- First start for ND's backup quarterback.
-- Ole Miss @ Alabama-- Rebels ended 10-game skid vs Alabama last year.
-- Auburn @ LSU-- Auburn crushed LSU 41-7 LY, running for 298 yards.
-- California @ Texas-- Bears haven't been to a bowl since 2011, is favored by six at Texas- their first spot as road favorite since 2012.
-- Stanford @ USC-- Cardinal is 5-3 in last eight series games, taking three of last four here; underdogs covered nine of last 12 in series

    **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Hump Day Happenings.......

    13) James Harden signed a 13-year, $200M deal with adidas to wear their sneakers, but adidas was not happy when TMZ showed Harden out in public recently wearing a pair of Air Jordans. Apparently that is not allowed in his contract.

    12) By the way, if another Watergate-type political scandal ever erupts, likely it won't be a newspaper that breaks it the way the Washington Post broke Watergate, it'll be freakin' TMZ, unless they're too busy stalking the Kardashians.

Don't laugh: James Harden is dating gold-digging Khloe Kardashian, who used to be married to Lamar Odom. Thats how the Harden/Air Jordan thing was uncovered.

    11) Rangers 6, Astros 5-- Texas is now in first place; they're 10-4 against Houston so far this season, but 17-30 against the rest of the AL West.

    10) If I owned the Dodgers, I call manager Don Mattingly or the GM and tell them to get of reliever Jim Johnson, who was good 3-4 years ago but is awful now. Over last two years, in over 110 innings, Johnson has a 5.22 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP, numbers that should get him sent to AAA.

    9) Texas Longhorns fired AD Steve Patterson, who no one seems to like, but the guy gets $1.4M (a year's salary) as a parting gift. I've said this before, but damn, I wish someone disliked me enough to give me $1.4M, just to go away.

    8) Umpire Ted Barrett was an amateur boxer before he turned to umpiring.

    7) Pro wrestler John Cena does more for charity than any athlete; he has answered over 500 Make-a-Wish requests, is a great ambassador for his profession. Here is another one of the great things he has done, this past Monday night.

    6) Are the rats jumping off the ship in Seattle? Now Marshawn Lynch's mom wants offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell fired. Gotta love social media.

    5) Dee Gordon had four hits last night for the Marlins, the 22nd time this season he has had 3+ hits in a game. He's become one of baseball's best leadoff hitters.

    4) Security at Charlotte Arena wouldn't let Jeremy Lin into the arena last week; guess they're not big NBA fans and didn't recognize Lin as one of the newest Hornets.

    3) Rockies 6, Dodgers 5 (16)-- Colorado used 13 pitchers on mound, a 14th in right field after Carlos Gonzalez got hurt fouling ball off his leg. Rockies used 30 players at all in this game, which ended around 3:30am in the east.

    2) Cubs-Pirates split a doubleheader Tuesday, looks like they'll be playing in the NL Wild Card game October 6. Jon Lester pitched a complete game in the nightrcap so the Cubs could salvage the split. Pirates have 4-game lead for home field edge.

    1) NFL running back Jeremy Hill starts Matt Ryan over Andy Dalton on his fantasy football team, which is fine, except for one minor detail.

Jeremy Hill plays for the Bengals. Whoops.

Arrieta has been a road warrior this season

Jake Arrieta is having himself a phenomenal season for the Chicago Cubs and a big reason for that is his ability to perform well pitching away from home.

The Cubbies have won 14 out of Arrieta's last 16 road starts. He's slated to get the ball Wednesday opposite A.J. Burnett and the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.

Chicago is currently in the -135 ballpark at sportsbooks.

D-Backs on an ugly skid behind Ray

When Robbie Ray has gotten the ball lately, bettors of the Arizona Diamondbacks have been suffering.

The D-Backs are a paltry 1-7 in Ray's last eight outings. He'll seek to buck that trend Wednesday at home versus Andrew Cashner's San Diego Padres.

As of this writing, Arizona was -115 on the moneyline. The total was off the board.

Red Sox's Kelly exits with shoulder ailment

BALTIMORE -- Boston starter Joe Kelly left in the third inning of the Red Sox's Tuesday night game against the Baltimore Orioles due to what the team called right shoulder tightness and fatigue.

The Red Sox said that Kelly would be evaluated further. He gave up four runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings.

Kelly started the contest with an eight-game winning streak, the longest in the American League this year and tied with the Chicago Cubs' Jake Arrieta (Aug. 4-present) for the best in the majors in 2015.

The right-hander struck out four in the first two innings but gave up four runs on five hits in the third inning before leaving after center fielder Adam Jones singled with one out. Left-hander Craig Breslow replaced him.

No timetable for Lucroy's return to Brewers

MILWAUKEE -- Jonathan Lucroy worked out with Milwaukee on Tuesday, but the Brewers' catcher still has no timetable for his return after sustaining a concussion last week in Miami.

"It's just a matter of letting that bruised brain heal up," Lucroy said Tuesday, before the Brewers opened a three-game series against the Cardinals at Miller Park. "It takes time and everybody heals different, so I'm waiting for my symptoms to go away fully so we can start attacking it a lot better."

Lucroy missed an entire week since he was stuck in the chin on a foul-tip by the Marlins' Macel Ozuna. While the team faced the Pirates in Pittsburgh, he was examined by noted concussion specialist Dr. Micky Collins of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

              A's Chavez out for season

CHICAGO -- The injury bug has bitten the Oakland Athletics again.

Manager Bob Melvin announced before Tuesday's game with the Chicago White Sox that right-handed starter Jesse Chavez is out for the season after suffering a non-displaced fracture in his ribs. Melvin said he wasn't sure when the injury occurred, but it's certainly another blow to a team that's been beaten up all season.

Hutchison moves to Blue Jays bullpen with Stroman's return

ATLANTA -- The return of Marcus Stroman to the Toronto rotation means a move to the bullpen for Drew Hutchison.

Hutchison was the Blue Jays' Opening Day starter and the right-hander has a 13-4 record in 27 starts.

The right-hander's ERA is 5.33, though, and he gave up 12 earned runs in 8 1/3 innings over his past two starts.

David Price, who is 6-1 with a 2.28 ERA in eight starts since being acquired from Detroit, will start against Atlanta on Wednesday, with Marco Estrada pitching the finale of the three-game interleague series Thursday.

Stroman will start Friday when the Blue Jays return to open their final homestand against Boston.

Stroman, who had knee surgery during spring training, made his return on Saturday against the Yankees in New York and got the win, working five innings.

MLB roundup: Rangers first in AL West for first time

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Mitch Moreland's ninth-inning sacrifice fly gave the Rangers a 6-5 win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday and vaulted Texas into first place in the American League West for the first time in 2015.

The second of four games between the Lone Star State rivals at Globe Life Park this week had all the drama and atmosphere of a playoff contest. The lead went back and forth early, as both starters struggled with their command.

Each bullpen settled down before the Rangers mounted the game-winning rally in their last at-bat. Prince Fielder started it with an opposite-field single off reliever Oliver Perez (0-2) to lead off the ninth.

Houston manager A.J. Hinch turned to his seventh reliever of the evening, Will Harris, who promptly gave up a single to Adrian Beltre. Pinch runner Drew Stubbs, in for Fielder, went to third. Moreland followed with a line drive that center fielder Jake Marisnick caught, but his throw was off line and Stubbs scored easily to give Texas the walk-off win.

              Nationals 4, Phillies 0

PHILADELPHIA -- Bryce Harper homered twice and drove in all four runs, and Stephen Strasburg struck out 14 as Washington silenced Philadelphia.

Harper went 3-for-3 with a solo homer, two-run shot and an RBI single. The 22-year-old right fielder raised his home run total to 39, which put him ahead of Colorado's Nolan Arenado for the National League lead.

Cody Asche's leadoff single in the fifth inning was the only hit Strasburg allowed in his eight-inning outing. The Phillies did not have a runner reach second base the entire game, and the only other batter to reach base was Freddy Galvis, who drew a first-inning walk.

              Rockies 5, Dodgers 4 (16 innings)

LOS ANGELES -- Nolan Arenado homered in the 16th inning, lifting Colorado to a victory over Los Angeles in a game that ended early Wednesday morning.

Arenado slammed his 39th home run on the first pitch he saw from Mat Latos (4-10) as the Rockies snapped the Dodgers' three-game winning streak. The contest lasted five hours, 23 minutes.

David Hale (4-5) worked a scoreless 15th inning, and Gonzalez Germen blanked the Dodgers in the 16th for his first save.

              Braves 3, Blue Jays 2

ATLANTA -- Andrelton Simmons singled home the winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth as Atlanta beat Toronto and snapped a 12-game home losing streak.

Adonis Garcia led off the ninth with an infield single against Aaron Sanchez (7-6). A.J. Pierzynski followed with his third hit of the game, moving pinch runner Todd Cunningham to third.

One out later, Simmons slapped a single into right field and was mobbed by his teammates as they enjoyed a home victory for the first time in more than three weeks.

              Marlins 9, Mets 3

NEW YORK -- Dee Gordon had four hits, including a two-run homer in the ninth inning, and Tom Koehler wriggled out of numerous jams as Miami snapped New York's eight-game winning streak.

Christian Yelich went 3-for-5 with a fifth-inning RBI double and a run-scoring groundout in the seventh. Justin Bour finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs.

Koehler (10-13) allowed one run on five hits and four walks while striking out four.

              Rays 6, Yankees 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Nick Franklin hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning, helping Tampa Bay beat New York.

Franklin went deep off Nick Rumbelow for his second home run of the season. The homer turned a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 Rays lead.

Tampa Bay got a quality start from right-hander Jake Odorizzi, who gave up three hits and three runs in six innings. The Rays bullpen backed Odorizzi (8-8) with three innings of shutout relief.

              Royals 2, Indians 0

CLEVELAND -- Kris Medlen pitched six strong innings, and Alex Rios homered to lead Kansas City past Cleveland.

In 6 1/3 scoreless innings, Medlen gave up five hits with one walk and no strikeouts. Right-hander Greg Holland pitched the ninth inning to pick up his 31st save.

Cleveland threatened in the bottom of the ninth, putting runners at first and second and no outs, but Holland retired the next three batters to preserve the win.

              Pirates 5, Cubs 4; Cubs 2, Pirates 1

PITTSBURGH -- Jon Lester pitched a five-hitter, leading Chicago to a victory over Pittsburgh and a split of a day-night doubleheader.

Lester (10-10) pitched his first complete game for the Cubs. He scattered five hits, struck out nine and walked one.

Starling Marte's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning gave the Pirates a victory in the first game.

              Tigers 5, Twins 4

MINNEAPOLIS -- Pitcher Alfredo Simon made his early offensive support hold up as Detroit defeated Minnesota at Target Field.

Detroit scored three times in the first two innings then tacked on the game-winner in the sixth as Simon pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed three runs, winning for the 13th time this season. It was the third quality start for Simon in his last nine outings.

Detroit's Victor Martinez had three hits and a pair of RBIs, his first runs batted in since mid-August. It was Martinez's first three-hit night since he had four against the Seattle Mariners on July 6.

              Athletics 17, White Sox 6

CHICAGO -- Josh Reddick homered and drove in four runs, Billy Butler had three hits with three RBIs, and Oakland routed Jeff Samardzija and Chicago.

Marcus Semien also homered for the Athletics, who scored 10 times in the fourth inning and set a season high in scoring. All nine starters drove in at least one run and Max Muncy was the only one without a hit for Oakland, which recovered from dropping an 8-7, 14-inning decision early Tuesday morning.

Aaron Brooks went six-plus innings and allowed six runs and 10 hits, but still eased to his first win since Aug. 1 to snap a three-decision losing streak.

              Cardinals 3, Brewers 1 (10 innings)

MILWAUKEE -- Jayson Heyward had three hits, including a two-run home run in the 10th inning, and St. Louis beat Milwaukee at Miller Park.

Heyward already doubled twice, walked and reached on a fielder's choice when he came up in the 10th against Brewers right-hander Tyler Thornburg, who got off to a bad start in the inning when Matt Carpenter reached on an error by Adam Lind.

Stephen Piscotty grounded into a force at second to bring up Heyward. Thornburg (0-2) quickly fell into a 3-0 hole, and on a 3-1 count, fired a fastball that Heyward sent to right for his 12th home run of the season.

              Orioles 6, Red Sox 5 (13 innings)

BALTIMORE -- Chris Davis lined a walk-off single in the bottom of the 13th inning that gave Baltimore a victory over Boston.

Gerardo Parra started the game-winning rally with a walk off Red Sox right-hander Jonathan Aro. Manny Machado then lined a single to center, and Parra never hesitated, easily making it to third.

Left-hander Robbie Ross Jr. then came on to face Davis. On a 2-1 pitch, Davis lined his game-winning single to right, bringing in Parra to end the 4-hour, 20-minute marathon.

              Angels 4, Mariners 3

SEATTLE -- Los Angeles got home runs from Mike Trout and David Murphy, while starting pitcher Nick Tropeano out-dueled Seattle's Felix Hernandez. The Angels snapped a two-game losing streak and is now four games back of new American League West leader Texas.

Hernandez (17-9) had a three-start winning streak snapped, allowing four runs off five hits over seven innings. The long-ball was his nemesis, as Murphy gave the Angels a 3-1 lead with a three-run shot in the third inning and Trout hit his 36th home run of the season to put Los Angeles ahead 4-2 in the sixth.

Nelson Cruz and Franklin Gutierrez each homered for Seattle. Cruz's home run was his 42nd of the season, the most hit by a Mariners player since Ken Griffey Jr. had an AL-best 48 in 1999.

              Diamondbacks 6, Padres 4

PHOENIX -- A.J. Pollock hit a three-run homer in a five-run seventh inning, and Welington Castillo had two hits and drove in a run in Arizona's victory over San Diego at Chase Field.

Chris Owings drew a walk from reliever Bud Norris (1-2) to open the seventh inning, and he scored on Nick Ahmed's triple. Pinch hitter Aaron Hill walked, and Pollock hit the first pitch from reliever Kevin Quackenbush for a homer and a 5-3 lead.

Pollock's homer was his 16th. He is the only major-leaguer with 30 doubles, 15 homers and 35 stolen bases.

              Reds 9, Giants 8

SAN FRANCISCO -- Todd Frazier hit Sergio Romo's third pitch of the 10th inning for a solo home run, as Cincinnati overcame a late rally by San Francisco.

The win was the fourth in the last six games against playoff hopefuls for the Reds, who evened the three-game series at one win apiece. The loss ended the Giants' four-game winning streak .

The homer by Frazier, the All-Star Game Home Run Derby champ, was his 34th of the season and came immediately after the Giants had scored twice in the ninth against Reds closer Aroldis Chapman to forge an 8-8 tie.

Mets Colon on fire in last four starts

The ageless wonder Bartolo Colon just keeps doing things that make us shake our head and his last four starts for the New York Mets is the latest.

Colon has been absolutely on fire in his last four starts, going 4-0 while pitching to a 0.58 ERA with 21 strikeouts to go along with just four walks.

The Mets hope Colon stays hot when he goes up against the Miami Marlins and scheduled starter Adam Conley. The Mets are currently heavy -210 favorites.

Over has cashed in four straight Archer starts

Tampa Bay Rays ace Chris Archer has been as dominant of late and it has resulted in the over cashing in his last four starts.

Archer has struggled a bit pitching to a 4.29 ERA over those four starts, much higher than his season ERA of 2.95. A big jump considering the average total he has faced in those four games is 7.5.

Archer faces off against Luis Severino and the visiting New York Yankees Wednesday night. The total for the game is currently at 7.0.
