    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Westgate Super Contest (1,727 entrants-- prize pool is $2.5M)six most popular picks in Week 1

T6)-- Colts and Vikings, 347 entrants picked at least one of these teams. L-?

    5) Packers 380-- Lot of faith in Aaron Rodgers. W

    4) Jets 381-- Not a lot of faith in anyone on the Browns. W

    3) Rams 474-- Almost fell off my chair when I saw this number. W

    2) Cardinals 589-- 300 more entrants in this contest this year than last, and last year had been the all-time record. W

    1) Dolphins 664-- Washington is seen as a league-wide joke. W (5-1)

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up NFL Opening Day.........

We overreact to Week 1 results; the offseason is so long, we look forward to the Week 1 games from the time the schedule comes out in the spring, but once we see the final scores today, then either panic or euphoria sets in and neither is warranted.

    13) Titans 42, Buccaneers 14-- By time Jameis Winston got his first completion, his Bucs were down 21-nil; Winston's first NFL pass was a pick-6. Last NFL QB whose first pass was a pick-6? Brett Favre, while playing for the Atlanta Falcons. Mariota had a glorious debut for the Titans; maybe his coaches are just better, setting him up to succeed. Bucs have two rookies on offensive line, too. Tough to win that way.

    12) Broncos 19, Ravens 13-- Each team's defense scored a TD, neither offense did, as Peyton Manning looked 39 years old, averaging 3.4 ypa. Total yardage in this game was 219-173. For the whole game. Denver has short week, long road trip this week, with a Thursday game at Arrowhead against the Chiefs.

    11) Rams 34 Seahawks 31 OT-- .Each team ran a punt back for a TD; Seattle had a defensive TD and scored 18 straight points in 4th quarter., but Foles led tying drive in last 2:00, then Seahawks started OT with a flubbed pooch kick that looked like a bad onside kick and Rams got ball near midfield, kicked a FG.

Game ended when Lynch was stuffed on 4th-and-1 in Ram terrritory. Of seven teams Sunday who were -2 or worse in turnovers, only Rams/Cowboys won.

    10) Packers 31, Bears 23-- Green Bay won 10 of last 11 series games, winning last six in row, five by 7+ points. Rodgers averaged 8.2 ypa without Nelson, as James Jones stepped in after being re-signed and caught two TDs. Chicago converted 11 of 17 on 3rd down, which is really good, but scored only 10 points on three red zone drives.

    9) Chiefs 27, Texans 20-- In Hard Knocks, Houston chose Brian Hoyer as QB over Ryan Mallett, in a not-too-decisive way, then Mallett "overslept" practice the next day, so now Bill O'Brien has a full-fledged QB controversy after Mallett came off the bench to direct a couple of garbage time scoring drives. This game was 27-9 at half; Travis Kelce looked like Kellen Winslow Sr in the first quarter, catching two TDs.

    8) Jets 31, Browns 10-- Cleveland is now 1-16 in season openers, as QB McCown was knocked goofy and fumbled while trying to score a TD. Manziel came on in relief, but he hadn't practiced much lately and it showed-- he was 13-24/182 with an INT and a TD pass. Excellent start to the Todd Bowles era in the Swamp.

    7) Bills 27, Colts 14-- I'm going to beat this to death a little, because it is important, I think. Tyrod Taylor was an average (at best) college QB, but he sat on an NFL bench for four years, learned his profession, got better at it and now that he finally got his chance to start a game, he excelled, averaging 10.3 ypa and running for 41 yards. It is becoming evident (see Winston, Jameis) that the best way to develop a QB is to let him sit and learn but no one has any patience anymore. Too bad.

As for Marcus Mariota's debut, which was stellar, we shall see. Still think they would be better off playing Mettenberger this year and letting Mariota observe for a while, but that sounds stupid now after the way Mariota played in Tampa today.

    6) Dolphins 17, Redskins 10-- Miami shut Washington out in second half, scored winning TD on a punt return in 4th quarter. NFL-wide, defense/special teams scored nine TDs this week (so far); teams with non-offensive TDs are 5-4, but two of the losers (Seattle/Baltimore) also gave up a non-offensive TD, so it is really 3-2.

    5) Panthers 20, Jaguars 9--Heading into the Monday night games, favorites are 8-5-1 this week; over is 9-5. In this game, teams were in red zone a combined six times, with two TDs, two FGs and two empty trips.

    4) Cardinals 31, Saints 19-- Arizona is 14-3 at home under Bruce Arians, who didn't become an NFL head coach until he was 60, which means he came very close to never becoming one. Yardage in this game was 427-408, but Saints were lame in red zone, as they seemed to miss departed TE Jimmy Graham.

    3) Chargers 33, Lions 28-- Around 5:00 Sunday, I sent this text to a buddy: "Lions are killing San Diego"; from that point on, Chargers scored 30 consecutive points and hung on after an onside kick in last minute for the win. Rivers was 35-42/388 passing as Bolts racked up 28 first downs, converting 6-11 on third down. Detroit is now 4-10 as road dogs since 2012, 5-11 in last 16 non-divisional road games. No bueno.

    2) Bengals 33, Raiders 13-- Cincinnati is only team in NFL history to make playoffs four years in a row but not win any playoff games in those four years. That said, they ended an 0-10 drought in O.Co Coliseum here with emphasis, KO'ing Derek Carr with a hand injury. Good start for Marvin Lewis' team.

    1) Cowboys 27, Giants 26-- Romo led last-minute comeback fueled by awful clock management by Giants and their $84M quarterback. Dallas is now 8-25 vs spread as home favorites since '10, 3-10 in divisional games; they covered once in last seven tries as a favorite in home opener- they lose Dez Bryant (foot) for 4-6 weeks as they head into Pihilly this week, but this was a big win for Dallas.

NCAAF Opening Line Report: 'Bama opens as 6.5-point faves vs. Ole Miss

Johnny Avello, executive director of race and sports for Wynn Las Vegas, installed the Tide as 6.5-point favorites.

Week 3 of the college football season is usually dotted with some less-than-stellar nonconference matchups. But the mighty Southeastern Conference is getting right down to brass tacks with two big games among ranked teams, highlighted by perennial national title contender Alabama hosting Mississippi.

Both teams come in 2-0 SU, with the Crimson Tide (1-1 ATS) opening with a solid 35-17 neutral-site win over Wisconsin as a 12.5-point favorite, then taking a less impressive 37-10 home win laying 34.5 points against Middle Tennessee State on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Mississippi (2-0 ATS) has cracked 70 points in both its games, steamrolling Tennessee-Martin 76-3 giving 39 points in its opener and whipping Fresno State 73-21 Saturday as a 31.5-point fave. But the trek to Tuscaloosa will be the Rebels’ first road game, and ‘Bama – which made it to the national semifinals last year before losing to Ohio State – would surely like to avenge its lone regular-season loss of 2014, a 23-17 setback as a 5.5-point chalk at Mississippi.

Johnny Avello, executive director of race and sports for Wynn Las Vegas, installed the Tide as 6.5-point favorites.

“Ole Miss has scored 149 points to go along with 1,260 total yards in two weeks, with junior college transfer quarterback Chad Kelly lighting it up,” Avello said. “Alabama coach Nick Saban, on the other hand, has been experimenting with two QBs, trying to find the correct formula. Can Mississippi continue their offensive ways at ‘Bama?”

      Auburn at Louisiana State (-6.5)

It’s another top-25 standoff among SEC teams, but Auburn will certainly have its doubters after its latest performance. The Tigers (2-0 SU, 0-2 ATS) were whopping 44-point home favorites against Jacksonville State, but needed overtime to eke out a 27-20 victory.

LSU had its season opener against McNeese State canceled due to foul weather, so the Tigers’ first game came Saturday night at Mississippi State – yet another ranked SEC team – and they held on for a 21-19 victory, failing to cover as a 3-point favorite.

“Auburn was very fortunate to come away with a ‘W.’ The Tigers were totally outplayed by Jacksonville State,” Avello said. “Auburn coach Gus Malzahn will make this a very difficult week of practice, and I expect a better effort in this important SEC matchup. I can’t make too drastic of a change in my power ratings.”

Georgia Tech at Notre Dame (-2.5)

The Fighting Irish (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS) haven’t dined on cupcakes the first two weeks, so it would seem that they’d be well prepared to host the Yellow Jackets. After ripping Texas 38-3 as an 8.5-point home chalk in its opener, Notre Dame bested Virginia 34-27 Saturday, though it failed to cash giving 13.5 points on the road.

But Notre Dame lost starting running back Tarean Folston with a torn ACL against Texas, then lost starting QB Malik Zaire for the year due to a broken ankle against Virginia.

Tech has rung up a ton of points in its 2-0 SU and ATS start, but both games were at home against much lesser competition. The Jackets drilled Alcorn State 69-6 as a 41-point favorite and Tulane 65-10 laying 32.5 points.

“The Irish lose Zaire this week and Folston last week. On a positive note, redshirt freshman QB DeShone Kiser looked pretty good, especially on the last drive to secure the victory over Virginia,” Avello said. “Georgia Tech appears to be an offensive powerhouse, so this line is tight.”

      Stanford at Southern Cal (-8)

The Trojans have hammered both their opponents so far, hanging up a 50-plus spot both times. On Saturday, as an overwhelming 44.5-point chalk against Idaho, USC rumbled to a 59-9 victory, moving to 2-0 SU and ATS.

Stanford (1-1 SU and ATS) stumbled at Northwestern in its opener, losing 16-6 as 10-point chalk, but bounced back Saturday with a 31-7 home win over Central Florida giving 20 points.

“The Trojans belted the Sun Belt Conference two weeks in a row, but now get into the meat of their schedule,” Avello said. “Even though Stanford has looked lethargic on offense, the final outcome of this matchup over the past five years has been no more than 7 or 8 points.”

MLB roundup: Yankees top Jays to avoid sweep

NEW YORK -- Masahiro Tanaka pitched seven outstanding innings and the New York Yankees averted a four-game sweep with a 5-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday.

First baseman Dustin Ackley was put in the lineup because of a .364 average off R.A. Dickey and the move paid off. Ackley lifted a sacrifice fly for New York's first run and hit a two-run home run into the right field seats with two outs in the fourth.

Designated hitter Alex Rodriguez was honored for collecting 3,000 hits earlier in the season in a pregame ceremony and had an RBI double in the eighth. He also scored on Ackley's sacrifice fly, sliding head first and raising his hands in triumph after being called safe.

        Nationals 5, Marlins 0

MIAMI -- Max Scherzer tossed eight scoreless innings and Matt den Dekker homered after he replaced injured star Bryce Harper to help Washington beat Miami.

Anthony Rendon had three hits and drove in a run while Jayson Werth, Ian Desmond, and Wilson Ramos also had RBIs to help the Nationals end a five-game losing streak.

Harper left the game in the first inning after colliding with Marlins second baseman Derek Dietrich when trying to run to third on a ground ball hit by Werth to shortstop Miguel Rojas.

        Cardinals 9, Reds 2

CINCINNATI -- Matt Adams and Tommy Pham each hit two-run homers and Michael Wacha pitched six solid innings as first-place St. Louis avoided a four-game series sweep with a victory over Cincinnati at Great American Ball Park.

St. Louis snapped a three-game losing streak.

Pham and Adams were among six Cardinals who collected RBIs in keeping with the team concept that has worked for them all season.

        Pirates 7, Brewers 6 (l1 innings)

PITTSBURGH -- Josh Harrison's single with one out in the 11th inning gave Pittsburgh a walk-off victory over Milwaukee, enabling it to keep pace in the National League Central race.

With the scored tied at 6, pinch hitter Travis Ishikawa started the winning rally with a single off reliever Tyler Thronburg and continued to second on a bobble Khris Davis. Pinch runner Pedro Florimon then moved to third on Jordy Mercer's ground out then Sean Rodriguez was hit by a pitch. Harrison, filling for ailing Starling Marte (stomach flu), followed by lining a single to left field to score Florimon.

The Pirates remained 2 1/2 games behind St. Louis in the division race and pushed their lead to four games over the Chicago Cubs for the first NL wild card.

        Phillies 7, Cubs 4

PHILADELPHIA -- A wild pitch by reliever Clayton Richard brought home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as Philadelphia beat the Chicago Cubs.

Ryan Howard homered and drove in three runs for the Phillies, who earned a split of the four-game series.

Chris Coghlan homered and tripled twice for the Cubs, who lead the race for the National League's second wild-card spot.

        Twins 7, White Sox 0

CHICAGO -- Minnesota hit Chicago White Sox ace Chris Sale for six early runs for his shortest stint in five months on the way to victory.

The Twins took two of three from the White Sox and beat Sale for the fourth time this season to remain in the hunt for an American League wild card berth.

Torii Hunter went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, including a three-run first inning home run for Minnesota. Eddie Rosario had three hits and one run batted in as the Twins pounded out 15 hits.

        Mets 10, Braves 7 (10 innings)

ATLANTA -- The New York Mets rallied from three runs down with two outs in the ninth inning and scored three times with two outs in the tenth inning to beat Atlanta at Turner Field.

The winning pitcher was Bobby Parnell (2-3) and Addison Reed earned his fourth save with a scoreless 10th. Jackson was the losing pitcher.

Atlanta starter Ryan Weber, making his second career start, pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed four runs on five hits, with two strikeouts and two walks.

        Red Sox 2, Rays 0 (13 innings)

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- It took 13 innings and 32 combined strikeouts by the two pitching staffs, but the bats finally woke up as Rusney Castillo delivered a bases-loaded single to score the game's only runs in a Boston victory over Tampa Bay.

Dustin Pedroia started the rally with a one-out single, followed by singles from Xander Bogaerts and Travis Shaw that loaded the bases. Facing Tampa Bay reliever Andrew Bellatti, the Rays seventh pitcher, Castillo ripped an offering to left field to score Pedroia and Bogaerts.

Heath Hembree got the victory with one inning of relief, and Robbie Ross Jr. picked up his second save. Enny Romero took the loss.

        Indians 7, Tigers 2; Tigers 9, Indians 2

CLEVELAND -- J.D. Martinez had three hits and three RBIs, and Detroit got strong work from its bullpen to beat Cleveland in the second game of a doubleheader.

Martinez had a two-run single in the third inning and an RBI double in the sixth as the Tigers pounded six Cleveland pitchers for 15 hits. Three Detroit relievers -- Drew VerHagen (1-0), Neftali Feliz and Jose Valdez -- threw two scoreless innings apiece.

The Indians won the opener as rookie Cody Anderson (4-3) outpitched veteran Justin Verlander (3-8). Chris Johnson had three hits and two RBIs, and shortstop Francisco Lindor added two hits and two RBIs for Cleveland.

        Astros 5, Angels 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Pinch-hitter Jed Lowrie hit a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to lead a five-run rally that gave Houston a win over the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium.

The Astros used the victory to remain 1 1/2 games ahead of the second-place Texas Rangers in the American League West. The Angels, whose three-game winning streak ended, fell 4 1/2 games behind the Astros in the divisional race and three games behind the Rangers for the second wild-card spot.

Los Angeles was one strike from a 3-0 victory when Houston rallied against right-handed closer Huston Street, the American League's saves leader.

        Rangers 12, Athletics 4

ARLINGTON, Texas - Adrian Beltre hit two home runs and drove in five as Texas pounded Oakland.

The loss clinched a losing record for Oakland for the first time since 2011.

Beltre, who entered the game in a 5-for-38 slide, drilled a two-run homer off Oakland starter Felix Doubront in the fourth inning that put Texas up 3-0. An inning later he got to Doubront again, clubbing a three-run homer to right center as part of a five-run fifth for the Rangers that put them up 8-0.

        Dodgers 4, Diamondbacks 3

PHOENIX -- Los Angeles right-hander Zack Greinke gave up three hits in eight scoreless innings and strengthened his case for the NL Cy Young Award in the Dodgers' victory over Arizona at Chase Field.

Greinke struck out eight and walked two while dropping his ERA to 1.61, the lowest in the majors. He also leads the majors in WHIP and quality starts and has given up one or fewer runs in 20 of his 29 starts.

Adrian Gonzalez had three hits and an RBI, catcher A.J. Ellis homered and third baseman Justin Turner had two hits, drove in a run and scored another. Arizona's Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who broke up Greinke's no-hitter in the fifth inning, hit a three-run homer off right-hander Kenley Jansen with two outs in the ninth inning.

        Giants 10, Padres 3

SAN FRANCISCO -- Right-hander Mike Leake helped out his own cause with his sixth career home run, a three-run shot that propelled San Francisco over San Diego and a three-game series sweep.

Buster Posey drove in two runs with a double and a single as the Giants rang up eight runs or more for the third consecutive game and finished the series with a 27-4 scoring advantage over the Padres.

The win allowed the Giants to remain 7 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the race for the National League West title with 19 games remaining. The Padres have lost four in a row and eight of 10.

        Rockies 3, Mariners 2

SEATTLE -- Colorado took advantage of a Seattle throwing error, and got an incredible defensive play of its own in the eighth, on the way to a victory.

Brandon Barnes made the defensive play of the game in the eighth, when his diving catch near the foul pole robbed Seattle's Kyle Seager of an extra-base hit and the score-tying RBI. Barnes got up and threw to cutoff man Cristhian Adames, who then gunned down baserunner Ketel Marte at first for the unconventional, inning-ending double play.

Seager was responsible for Colorado's final two runs when he made a fourth-inning throwing error that put the Rockies ahead 3-0. Colorado's Willin Rosario and Justin Morneau both scored on Seager's errant throw to home with the bases loaded, giving the Rockies the lead.

        Orioles 8, Royals 2

BALTIMORE -- Jonathan Schoop had three hits including two of Baltimore's four home runs and Wei-Yin Chen tossed seven strong innings to defeat Kansas City.

Adam Jones homered, doubled and drove in four runs and Chris Davis also homered for Baltimore.

Chen bounced back from a pair of subpar efforts, allowing two runs on six hits. He retired 15 of the last 17 batters he faced.

Kansas City starter Johnny Cueto's problems continued as the right-hander lost his fifth straight start. Pitching on six days rest, Cueto (2-6 with the Royals) gave up eight runs -- seven earned -- on 11 hits over 6 1/3 innings.

MLB betting cheat sheet: Texas Showdown
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cole Hamels goes up against Scott Kazmir in a matchup of newly acquired pitchers to open a huge series between the Rangers and Astros.

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the mid-week major-league schedule:

                  Texas Showdown

The Rangers host the Astros in a four game set in Arlington beginning Monday, and there's only 1.5 games separating these two teams in the standings. Houston has not played well on the road of late, losing six of it's last nine away from Minute Maid Park. The Rangers send Cole Hamels to the hill in Game 1, and he's won five straight starts. His last start in Texas was an impressive performance, striking out 10 while allowing one run on two hits over eight innings in a win over the Orioles.

                  Pirates Plundering

Pittsburgh has won five of it's last six, and the Pirates are now hot on the heels of the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central. The Cardinals lead has been reduced to just 2.5 games with 20 games left to play. Pittsburgh will host the Cubs this week, and the Cubs are just 7-16 in their last 23 games at Pittsburgh. The Pirates have won 40 of their last 53 games at PNC Park.

                  Crush Davis

Orioles slugger Chris Davis has hit seven home runs in September, taking over the major league lead with a total of 42 for the season. Hot on his heels is former teammate Nelson Cruz, who has 41. Davis is batting .444 in September so far, and he could stay hot with as the Orioles host the Red Sox at Camden Yards this week. He's hit .340 with three home runs and 10 RBIs versus Boston this year.

                  Hitting Notes

*The New York Mets lead the major leagues in runs scored so far in September, and the team is batting .292 in 12 games so far this month. Yoenis Cespedes is swinging a hot bat, he's hitting .405 with six home runs and 16 RBIs over the past seven days.

*The San Francisco Giants crushed San Diego in a three game sweep at AT&T Park over the weekend, out-scoring the Padres 27-2. Buster Posey was 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs on Sunday, and he's hitting .432 in September.

                  Pitching Notes

*Felix Hernandez is tied with Dallas Keuchel for first in the American League with 17 wins so far. His next start comes at home against the Angels, and he's 3-0 with a 0.67 ERA in four starts versus LA this season.

*Dallas Keuchel will make his next start on the road in Texas, and he's struggled on the road this season. Keuchel who is 13-0 at home, is just 4-7 with a 3.13 ERA in 13 starts on the road.

                  Totals Streak

The Orioles took two of three from the Royals over the Weekend, and they hit a whopping 10 home runs in the series. Baltimore has seen the total go over in nine of it's last 12, while the Red Sox have trended over at a rate of 10-3-1 in it's last 14 road games. We could see more fireworks at Camden Yards this week.

                  Injury Notes

*Troy Tulowitzki suffered a broken scapula in New York over the weekend, and he's expected to miss at least two weeks. The Jays have acquired Darwin Barney from the Dodgers to help fill in at shortstop.

*Nate Eovaldi leads the Yankees in wins, and the Yankees will miss him as he's expected to be out for the remainder of the regular season with an elbow injury.

Hamels, Kazmir trending in opposite directions

The Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers begin a huge series with the AL West lead on the line and Game 1 features two newly acquired pitchers who are trending in opposite directions.

For the Rangers Cole Hamels got off to a slow start, but the Rangers have won his last five starts while he has pitched to a 3.34 ERA.

Meanwhile, the Astros have gone just 1-6 in Kazmir's last seven starts, while he has put up a 4.28 ERA.

The Rangers are currently -123 home favorites for the series opener.

A's not a fan of facing lefties when on the road

The Oakland Athletics are one of the league's worst road teams this season, but it is even worse when they go up against left-handed starts away from home, going just 4-22 in their last 26 road games versus a southpaw.

Oakland backers are hoping they buck the trend Monday night when the A's visit the Chicago White Sox and scheduled starter, lefty John Danks (4.60 ERA, 11-14 O/U).

Luckily for the A's they will counter with their ace Sonny Gray (2.28 ERA, 13-11 O/U) and are slight -115 road favorites.

Red Sox cashing overs against bad teams

The Boston Red Sox are getting in high scoring affairs against bad teams, with the over going 23-4-1 in the BoSox last 28 games versus a team with a losing record.

That's exactly what will be happening when they visit the 79-73 Baltimore Orioles Monday night.

The Red Sox send Eduardo Rodriguez (4.05 ERA, 11-7 O/U) to the mound to take on the Orioles Kevin Gausman (4.43 ERA, 4-8 O/U). The total is currently at 8.5 runs.

                      Indians crushing right-handers at home

The Cleveland Indians crushing right-handers at home, scoring 8.0 runs per game in their last six games against right handers. The Indians and the over are 6-0 in those games.

Indians and overs backers hope the streak continues Tuesday night when the Tribe hosts the Kansas City Royals in the opener of a four-game series.

Cleveland sends Carlos Carrasco (3.70 ERA, 17-9 O/U) to the hill, while Kansas City will counter with Edison Volquez (3.49 ERA, 13-13 O/U). The Indians are currenly -139 favorites with a total sitting at 7.5 runs.
