              Monday's Tip Sheet

              September 14, 2015

Washington Nationals at Philadelphia Phillies | 7:05 p.m. ET

The Washington Nationals picked up a huge win in yesterday’s series finale with the Miami Marlins behind Max Scherzer, and will now seek to keep it going against another downtrodden NL East team to keep their faint playoff hopes alive.

Fortunately for them as it pertains tonight’s series opener in Philadelphia, they have another constant on the hill in veteran Jordan Zimmermann (12-8, 3.32 ERA), who will simply wish to continue on his recent roll as of late. To be specific, Zimmermann has allowed exactly one run in each of his last three outings, while pitching into the sixth inning or deeper in each instance. All three of those starts came at home at Nationals Park, though, where the 29-year-old has fared significantly better in 2015. He’s on the road tonight, and in 12 starts away from our nation’s capital, he’s just 5-5 with a 4.67 ERA and 1.40 ERA, while opposing lineups are surprisingly hitting .303 off Zimmermann in those outings. The over/under is 7.5 in any case.

That could mean Phillies rookie Aaron Nola (6-2, 3.56 ERA) might be one of the more tempting underdog bets on tonight’s slate, having +145 odds in this home assignment. That’s especially true with how the youngster has pitched as of late, with one run or less surrendered by Nola in three of his past four starts. That includes his most recent performance -- arguably the most impressive thus far into his freshman campaign -- when he blanked the Braves over seven sharp innings and striking out seven. His splits, unlike with Zimmermann, also figure to aid his outlook this evening, as he has a 2.10 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and .198 BAA in his five starts at Citizens Bank Park. He’ll be taking on division rival Washington for the first time in his career.

Houston Astros at Texas Rangers | 8:05 p.m. ET (MLB Network)

With ESPN hosting the year’s first edition of Monday Night Football this evening, there’s no Monday Night Baseball on the network as a result, leading to rare Monday action set to air on MLB Network. They couldn’t ask for a more intriguing division race to showcase in their contest tonight, as the latest installment of the Lone Star Series kicks off the new week, with the first-place Houston Astros just 1.5 games up on the in-state rival Texas Rangers in the AL West.

At the moment, the Rangers still have possession of the AL’s second Wild Card spot, but certainly would like more if they can get it. To continue their quest towards accomplish such, they have trade deadline acquisition Cole Hamels (9-8, 3.76 ERA) on the hill looking to continue his notable success as of late. When the Rangers first got Hamels, it took the former Philadelphia ace a little while to settle in, as he allowed four runs or more in his first pair of outings. Since then, however, Hamels has looked like the standout pitcher the Rangers hoped they were getting, as evident in the fact that he’s registered five consecutive quality starts entering this evening’s assignment, while going seven innings or more in each instance. He’s a -125 favorite for this series opener.

The Astros, just looking to hang onto their spot atop the division, will counter with a talented left-hander of their own, that being Scott Kazmir (7-10, 2.63 ERA). Like Hamels, Kazmir is also a trade deadline acquisition who has excelled with his new club since arriving. In fact, the 31-year-old has now made nine starts with Houston, and although he’s officially 2-5 in those games, his numbers would certainly indicate much better, as he has a 3.13 ERA and .245 batting-average-against over 54 2/3 total innings of work. One of those outings includes a night’s work in Arlington on the road against these Rangers, who managed to plate four runs (one earned) off Kazmir on six hits and a pair of walks in 5 2/3 innings on August 5. The over/under is appropriately 8.

Colorado Rockies at Los Angeles Dodgers | 10:10 p.m. ET

Bettors are always taking notice of when Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw (13-6, 2.15 ERA) takes the mound at Chavez Ravine, and tonight’s assignment will mark his latest home start, when he goes up against the NL West’s basement resident, the Colorado Rockies. If Kershaw is at all concerned with adding yet another NL Cy Young award to his already-remarkable resume, he’ll certainly be motivated to match teammate Zack Greinke’s eight-shutout-inning performance in Arizona yesterday afternoon.

Being that he’s at home, Kershaw is a good bet to twirl one of his usual gems, considering he’s 9-2 in 13 starts at Dodger Stadium with a truly marvelous 1.41 ERA and 0.77 WHIP, while compiling a ridiculous 134/14 K/BB ratio in 95 2/3 home innings. At the same time, Kershaw is a little more human when taking on Colorado, as although he’s 3-0 in four starts opposing the club, he has just a 3.91 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in those outings. He’s a -330 favorite nonetheless, as is usually the case for a Kershaw start at home.

While Kershaw is as close to automatic as it gets when working from Dodger Stadium, bettors might want to show a little discipline considering who he’s facing, that being intriguing Rockies rookie hurler Jon Gray (0-0, 5.17 ERA). One interesting item about the 23-year-old right-hander thus far is that through seven starts into his big league career, Gray still hasn’t received a decision on his record, although after his most recent outing, it would appear he’s trending more towards notching his first career win.

That’s because he had his best performance to date, when he logged five shutout innings in San Diego against another division rival, while striking out six and yielding only four baserunners. On the contrary, the Rockies are 1-6 in games started by Gray. The linesmakers have set the line at 6 due to the presence of Kershaw.

                September 14, 2015

DETROIT TIGERS (64-76) at MINNESOTA TWINS (73-68)

First pitch: Monday, 8:10 p.m. ET
                Sportsbook.ag Line: Detroit +145, Minnesota -155, Total: 8.5

The suddenly hot Minnesota Twins host a struggling Tigers team on Monday night.

The Tigers played two games against the Indians on Sunday and split the set, which gave them a loss in the three-game series. Detroit has now lost three of its past four games and seven of its past 11 as well. The Twins, meanwhile, defeated the White Sox 7-0 on Sunday and have now won two consecutive series and seven of their past 12 games.

On the season, the Tigers have gotten the best of this head-to-head matchup with eight wins in 13 games. Minnesota, however, is 4-3 when playing as the host in this season. On the mound in this game will be LHP Kyle Lobstein (3-7, 5.31 ERA, 28 K) for Detroit and RHP Tyler Duffey (2-1, 4.17 ERA, 30 K) for Minnesota.

The Tigers are 17-12 against the money line with an on base percentage of .310 or worse over their last 20 games this season. The Twins, meanwhile, are 8-1 against the money line in home games after batting .225 or worse over a 15-game span on the year.

SS Jose Iglesias (Finger) is out indefinitely for Detroit and Minnesota will be entering this contest at close to full strength.

The Tigers have not been playing well as of late and will now be sending the struggling Kyle Lobstein out to the mound for a meeting with the Twins. Lobstein has been lit up in his past two starts, pitching a total of 9.3 innings and allowing 15 hits and 11 earned runs. He has allowed three homers and walked four batters over the past two games and will need to settle in and deliver something close to a quality start if his team is going to win on Monday.

The last time he faced Minnesota, Lobstein allowed six earned runs on seven hits in just 2.1 innings of work. Probably the biggest reason that this Tigers team is struggling is that 3B Miguel Cabrera (.341, 17 HR, 68 RBI) has not been hitting well. Cabrera is just 4-for-31 in the past eight games and he has not picked up a single RBI in that span. It has been 16 games since he last hit a homer and he must break out of his slump if this team is going to start winning games.

Luckily for Detroit, OF J.D. Martinez (.285, 36 HR, 94 RBI) came through on Sunday. Martinez was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI in the game. The Tigers will need him to produce at the plate if Cabrera can’t get himself going soon.

The Twins are playing very well recently and they’ll be sending Tyler Duffey to the mound on Monday. Duffey has pitched well for Minnesota over the past few weeks, allowing two earned runs in 6.2 innings of work in his last outing on Sep. 6. He struck out eight batters in that game and walked just one.

Over his past five starts, Duffey has pitched 30.1 innings and allowed just nine earned runs. He’ll need to keep it up against a dangerous Detroit lineup on Monday. Offensively, Minnesota was on fire on Sunday. The team racked up 15 hits and scored seven runs in its win over the White Sox. OF Torii Hunter (.238, 19 HR, 69 RBI) was the guy that came through for the Twins, going 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBI in the game. Hunter now has four multi-hit games in his past six contests. He’ll be looking to keep that hot streak up on Monday.

1B Joe Mauer (.268, 8 HR, 60 RBI) and DH Miguel Sano (.275, 16 HR, 44 RBI) will also be counted on to drive in runs for this Twins team. Mauer is just 2-for-10 over the past three games and must snap out of his slump, as he is this team’s most consistent hitter. Sano, meanwhile, can really use a long ball in this one. He’s hit two in the past 10 games and is this team’s best source of power by far.

MLB Betting Cheat Sheet: Texas Showdown

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the mid-week major-league schedule:

                  Texas Showdown

The Rangers host the Astros in a four game set in Arlington beginning Monday, and there's only 1.5 games separating these two teams in the standings. Houston has not played well on the road of late, losing six of it's last nine away from Minute Maid Park. The Rangers send Cole Hamels to the hill in Game 1, and he's won five straight starts. His last start in Texas was an impressive performance, striking out 10 while allowing one run on two hits over eight innings in a win over the Orioles.

                  Pirates Plundering

Pittsburgh has won five of it's last six, and the Pirates are now hot on the heels of the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central. The Cardinals lead has been reduced to just 2.5 games with 20 games left to play. Pittsburgh will host the Cubs this week, and the Cubs are just 7-16 in their last 23 games at Pittsburgh. The Pirates have won 40 of their last 53 games at PNC Park.

                  Crush Davis

Orioles slugger Chris Davis has hit seven home runs in September, taking over the major league lead with a total of 42 for the season. Hot on his heels is former teammate Nelson Cruz, who has 41. Davis is batting .444 in September so far, and he could stay hot with as the Orioles host the Red Sox at Camden Yards this week. He's hit .340 with three home runs and 10 RBIs versus Boston this year.

                  Hitting Notes

*The New York Mets lead the major leagues in runs scored so far in September, and the team is batting .292 in 12 games so far this month. Yoenis Cespedes is swinging a hot bat, he's hitting .405 with six home runs and 16 RBIs over the past seven days.

*The San Francisco Giants crushed San Diego in a three game sweep at AT&T Park over the weekend, out-scoring the Padres 27-2. Buster Posey was 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs on Sunday, and he's hitting .432 in September.

                  Pitching Notes

*Felix Hernandez is tied with Dallas Keuchel for first in the American League with 17 wins so far. His next start comes at home against the Angels, and he's 3-0 with a 0.67 ERA in four starts versus LA this season.

*Dallas Keuchel will make his next start on the road in Texas, and he's struggled on the road this season. Keuchel who is 13-0 at home, is just 4-7 with a 3.13 ERA in 13 starts on the road.

                  Totals Streak

The Orioles took two of three from the Royals over the Weekend, and they hit a whopping 10 home runs in the series. Baltimore has seen the total go over in nine of it's last 12, while the Red Sox have trended over at a rate of 10-3-1 in it's last 14 road games. We could see more fireworks at Camden Yards this week.

                  Injury Notes

*Troy Tulowitzki suffered a broken scapula in New York over the weekend, and he's expected to miss at least two weeks. The Jays have acquired Darwin Barney from the Dodgers to help fill in at shortstop.

*Nate Eovaldi leads the Yankees in wins, and the Yankees will miss him as he's expected to be out for the remainder of the regular season with an elbow injury.

Colts WR Hilton likely out 1-2 weeks

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver T.Y. Hilton is day-to-day with a bruised knee.

The Colts are planning to be without their No. 1 receiver for their Week 2 Monday night game against the New York Jets.

"It looks like he may miss some time," head coach Chuck Pagano allowed Sunday night.

Colts owner Jim Irsay said Sunday that Hilton was diagnosed with a "really bad bruised" and the team would err on the side of caution for a few weeks.

Hilton's official status could change by the weekend if he responds to treatment.

Hilton signed a five-year, $65 million contract extension with the Colts before the start of the season. He led the team in 2014 with 82 receptions for 1,345 yards and seven touchdowns and had seven receptions for 88 yards Sunday in a loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Indianapolis added veteran Andre Johnson as a free agent, but he was targeted 10 times and totaled four catches for 24 yards in his Colts' debut.

Report: Redskins to cut K Forbath

The Washington Redskins reportedly plan to release kicker Kai Forbath and sign Dustin Hopkins, who has yet to kick an NFL field goal.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday that the Redskins will cut Forbath and sign Hopkins, formerly with the New Orleans Saints and Buffalo Bills.

Forbath missed a 46-yard field goal in Sunday's 17-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins. He also made a 45-yarder in the game. Last season, he hit 24 of 27 field goals for the Redskins.

The Redskins drafted kicker Zach Hocker last year, then cut him at the end of the preseason. Hocker beat out Hopkins for the kicking job in New Orleans, and went 4-for-4 in his NFL debut Sunday.
