    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Westgate Super Contest (1,727 entrants-- prize pool is $2.5M) six most popular picks in Week 1

T6)-- Colts and Vikings, 347 entrants picked at least one of these teams

    5) Packers 380-- Lot of faith in Aaron Rodgers

    4) Jets 381-- Not a lot of faith in anyone on the Browns.

    3) Rams 474-- Almost fell off my chair when I saw this number.

    2) Cardinals 589-- 300 more entrants in this contest this year than last, and last year had been the all-time record.

    1) Dolphins 664-- Washington is seen as a league-wide joke.

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday.......

    13) Oklahoma 31, Tennessee 24 OT-- Sooners' offense did bupkus in first 45:00, but this game had a great finish, with spunky QB Mayfield leading a great comeback and then putting his team over the top in overtime. We need more games like this in September, excellent non-conference matchups. This game was fun.

    12) Auburn 27, Jacksonville State 20 OT-- 30 years ago, the Rams won the NFC West with most famous alum of Jacksonville State's football program (Dieter Brock) as its QB-- he had thrown for 34,830 yards in the CFL before that.

The Gamecocks were winning yesterday in the last minute, but let it slip away, much to the relief of every other team in the SEC. Loss here would've been tough to explain away when the playoffs roll around and conferences start comparing themselves.

    11) Toledo 16, Arkansas 12-- Not a great day for the SEC, as Bret Bielema has now lost his last 12 games that were decided by 7 or less points, dating back to his days at Wisconsin. Bielema's last eight wins are all by 17+ points.

    10) Notre Dame 34, Virginia 27-- Irish lost QB Zaire for the year, but his backup saved the day in this game, throwing a GW 39-yard TD pass with 0:12 left against a Virginia club that UCLA outgained 503-336 in a 34-16 win last week. Not often a team scores 34 points while going 0-10 on 3rd down, but ND did in this game.

    9) Bowling Green 48, Maryland 27-- MAC's Falcons ran 105 plays for 692 yards and scored 42 points in the second half, so before Big 14 people start pointing fingers, they might want to check out that boxscore. Or this one.........

    8) Washington State 37, Rutgers 34-- Scarlet Knights ran a kick and a punt back for a TD but still lost, as Wazzu's soph QB Falk threw for 478 yards, including a GW TD with 0:12 left. WR Marks caught 14 balls for 146 yards and took some severe hits, but kept catching the ball-- he'll be a pro.

    7) David Ortiz hit HRs #499 and 500 last night in St Pete; he and Albert Pujols are only two players to hit 499/500 in same game.

    6) Troy Tulowitzki has a broken bone in his shoulder, is out indefinitely.

    5) Kentucky 26, South Carolina 22-- Gamecocks scored with 8:09 left to pull within 24-22, went for two points to tie game, but Kentucky scored two on defense instead and game swung on that play. Carolina QB Mitch hurt his shoulder-- lot of QB injuries in the first two weeks of the season.

    4) Michigan State 31, Oregon 28-- I'm not a big fan of a kid playing for a team for three years, then jumping ship to play for a better team as a senior, just because he can. Vernon Adams played for I-AA Eastern Washington, they won lot of games, but then he bolted to Oregon because they needed a QB this year. This happens more in hoops than football, but it leaves a sour taste.

Maybe Adams is a great kid, I don't know, maybe he'll be a great NFL QB, but I think he missed out on an experience of finishng what he started at EWU, and who is to say that his staying there would've hindered his chances of playing in the NFL?

    3) Both punters in the Oregon State-Michigan game are from Australia.

    2) Minnesota 23, Colorado State 20 OT-- State fumbled on first play of OT after tying game on last play of regulation. Good win for the improving Gophers.

    1) Temple 34, Cincinnati 26-- Owls open season with wins at Penn State/Cincinnati, with both wins by more than a TD. Think they'll get any top 25 votes? They should.

MLB roundup: Bumgarner toys with perfection

SAN FRANCISCO -- Madison Bumgarner retired the first 23 San Diego Padres he faced Saturday night before settling for a one-hit shutout, delivering the San Francisco Giants an 8-0 victory.

Angel Pagan and first baseman Brandon Belt smacked solo home runs and right fielder Marlon Byrd drove in three runs with three hits, helping the Giants (74-68) keep pace with the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers (81-60) atop the National League West.

The Dodgers lead the Giants by 7 1/2 games with 20 games remaining.

The home run for Belt, which capped the scoring in the seventh inning, was his 18th of the season, a career high.

Bumgarner took a perfect game two outs into the eighth before Padres pinch-hitter Melvin Upton Jr. lined a single to center field on a 2-1 pitch.

          Athletics 5, Rangers 3

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Oakland rookie Sean Nolin notched his first career win by holding Texas to one run in 5 2/3 innings.

Nolin, who was acquired from Toronto on the offseason as part of the Josh Donaldson trade, struck out five and gave up just five hits in his fourth career outing.

The Rangers dropped to 5-9 on the season against the last-place Athletics.

          White Sox 8, Twins 2

CHICAGO -- Adam Eaton went 3-for-5 with an RBI and the Chicago cruised to the win.

Trayce Thompson, Carlos Sanchez and Melky Cabrera were among five other players who contributed two hits apiece for the White Sox.

revor Plouffe went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead Minnesota.

          Mariners 7, Rockies 2

SEATTLE -- Seattle used four home runs, including the career-high 41st of the season from Nelson Cruz to beat Colorado.

Cruz's home run matched the season total of Baltimore's Chris Davis for the most in baseball.

Robinson Cano, Jesus Montero and Franklin Gutierrez added solo shots as the Mariners won for the eighth time in 12 games.

          Dodgers 9, Diamondbacks 5

PHOENIX -- Rookie Corey Seager had four hits including his first major league home run and drove in three runs Los Angeles' win.

Carl Crawford homered to open the game and Adrian Gonzalez and Joc Pederson homered in the third inning as the Dodgers built a 7-0 lead.

Seager's homer in the fifth inning made it 8-4 after Arizona scored three runs in the fourth.

          Angels 3, Astros 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- C.J. Cron hit a home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Los Angeles the victory.

The Angels used their third successive win and their seventh in 10 games to move within 3 1/2 games of the first-place Astros in the American League West and within two games of the Texas Rangers, who hold the second wild-card spot.

Houston has lost four of its last five and has compiled a 7-10 record since Aug. 24.

          Phillies 7, Cubs 5

PHILADELPHIA -- Pinch-hitter Cody Asche drilled a two-run, walk-off homer in the ninth inning to give Philadelphia the win.

On the first pitch Asche saw from Cubs reliever Hector Rondon, he hit his second career walk-off homer and his eighth home run of the season.

          Red Sox 10, Rays 4

ST. PETERSBURG -- Rick Porcello continued his string of quality starts and was backed by five home runs, including a pair of history making shots from David Ortiz as Boston beat Tampa.

Ortiz hit a three-run shot in the first inning, and a solo shot in the fifth, to become the 27th player in major league history to reach 500.

Among active players, only Alex Rodriguez (684) and Albert Pujols (555) have more than the soon-to-be 40-year-old Ortiz.

          Marlins 2, Nationals 0

MIAMI -- Jose Fernandez improved to a record-tying 16-0 at home and lowered his career ERA at Miami to 1.11.

The only other pitchers in history to start their careers 16-0 at home were Johnny Allen (1932-33) and LaMarr Hoyt (1980-82). But of the three, only Fernandez earned his 16 wins exclusively as a starter.

Fernandez, in his first start since he was sidelined on Aug. 7 with a biceps injury, pitched five scoreless innings, holding the Nationals to two singles and one walk. He struck out seven batters and could have gone deeper in the game if not a pitch limit. (He threw 69 pitches.)

          Mets 6, Braves 4

ATLANTA -- New York padded its National League East lead while adding to Atlanta's woes.

Yoenis Cespedes hit his seventh homer in the past 10 games and added an RBI fielder's choice in a tie-breaking ninth inning as the Mets handed the Braves their 11th straight home loss.

Atlanta gained momentum when Adonis Garcia hit a tying three-run homer off Tyler Clippard in eighth inning to cost Noah Syndergaard a victory, but the Mets came back in the ninth for their sixth straight victory.

          Pirates 10, Brewers 2

PITTSBURGH -- Jeff Locke pitched into the seventh inning for just the second time in 10 starts, Josh Harrison had four hits and Michael Morse hit a pinch-hit grand slam as Pittsburgh rolled to the victory.

Locke worked 6 1/3 innings and allowed only one run and three hits as the Pirates won for the sixth time in nine games and drew within two games of the first-place St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central.

It is the closest the Pirates have been to St. Louis since they were also two back at the All-Star break after winning three games in a row from the Cardinals at Pittsburgh.

          Blue Jays 9, Yankees 5, 11 innings, Game 1

          Blue Jays 10, Yankees 7, Game 2

NEW YORK -- Toronto moved 3 1/2 games ahead of the New York in the AL East by completing a doubleheader sweep with a 10-7 victory in the nightcap.

In the first game, Toronto scored four times in the top of the 11th inning to earn the win.

Pinch hitter Russell Martin drew one of three bases-loaded walks in the top of the 11th inning as Toronto outlasted New York in Game 1 of a doubleheader.

          Royals 14, Orioles 6

BALTIMORE -- Mike Moustakas hammered his way into the Kansas City Royals' record books by driving in nine runs with a pair of homers, including a grand slam.

Kansas City won for just the second time in eight games, but evened the three-game series with the rubber match Sunday night. Baltimore fell to five games under .500.

Royals right-hander Yordano Ventura overcame a shaky start to pick up the win. He allowed four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and three walks over 5 2/3 innings.

          Reds 5, Cardinals 1

Reds 4, Cardinals 2 (Suspended game)

CINCINNATI -- Skip Schumaker hit a three-run homer and Anthony DeSclafani had a career-high 10 strikeouts in six innings, lifting Cincinnati over struggling St. Louis.

The Cardinals committed five errors in the first three games of the series and have been outscored 47-13 in the past seven contests.

Adam Duvall's two-run homer in the eighth inning lifted the Reds past the Cardinals in the resumption of Friday night's suspended game.

Duvall's homer, his third, came on a 1-0 pitch from right-hander Jonathan Broxton and just barely cleared the right field wall with a runner aboard.

          Tigers-Indians, postponed

CLEVELAND _ Saturday's game between Detroit and Cleveland was postponed by rain had started Friday and continued through most of the day Saturday.

Friday's game also was rained out.

The two teams will attempt to play two games on Sunday.

Tigers Verlander looks to stay hot versus Indians

The Detroit Tigers hope the Justin Verlander resurgence continues Sunday afternoon when the Tigers close out their series with the Cleveland Indians.

The former MVP and Cy Young award winner has pitched to a very good 1.27 ERA in his last six starts to go along with 39 strikeouts to 11 walks. He also has eight quality starts in his last nine outings.

Verlander is matched up against the Indians Cody Anderson. The Tigers are currently +152 road dogs.

Blue Jays Dickey goes for 11th straight win

A resurgent looking R.A. Dickey has been a big part of the Toronto Blue Jays success this season, as they try to win their 11th consecutive game in which the knuckleballer starts when he takes the mound at Yankee Stadium Sunday.

Dickey is 8-0 in those 10 starts, pitching to a very good 2.66 ERA to go along with 42 strikeouts to just 13 walks in the last 10 games.

Dickey and the Jays are currently +123 road dogs for the finale of the four-game series with the Bronx Bombers. Masahiro Tanaka gets the start for the Yankees, who are trying to avoid a four-game sweep.

Nationals RHP Storen breaks thumb during tantrum

Washington Nationals right-hander Drew Storen is expected to miss the rest of the season after breaking his right thumb during a fit of frustration, manager Matt Williams said Saturday.

The injury happened Wednesday, when an upset Storen slammed his locker after giving up a go-ahead home run to the New York Mets' Yoenis Cespedes in the eighth inning.

The injury was diagnosed after Storen was unable to throw Friday and told the team what had happened, Williams said.

Storen has 29 saves and a 3.44 ERA, but he has surrendered three runs in his past three innings over four games.

The day before he gave up the late homer to Cespedes, Storen walked three to blow a save in what turned into an 8-7 loss to the Mets.
