Preview: Sky (21-12) at Sun (14-19)

        Date: September 13, 2015 1:00 PM EDT

Elena Delle Donne will be crowned with her first WNBA scoring title Sunday when the Chicago Sky visit the Connecticut Sun on Sunday.

Delle Donne will dethrone Minnesota's Maya Moore, who finished with a 20.6 scoring average. The Chicago star and frontrunner for MVP honors is averaging 23.2 points, and that figure could only drop as low as 22.5 if she's held scoreless.

She will become the ninth player to lead the WNBA in scoring. If she scores at least 47 points, she will join Diana Taurasi as the only players to average at least 24. Delle Donne's career-high is 45.

It's not even clear if Delle Donne will play since Chicago (21-12) has already clinched the Eastern Conference's No. 2 seed and opens the postseason Thursday at home against Indiana or Washington.

Teammate Cappie Pondexter figures to miss a fifth straight game due to a concussion. She is eighth in the league with 15.0 points per game.

Delle Donne was out with a foot injury and Pondexter was also out the last time these teams met in Connecticut's 72-68 road win Aug. 30. Kelsey Bone dominated inside with 25 points and eight rebounds as the Sun (14-19) evened the season series at two wins apiece.

Three of the four meetings have been decided by four points or less, with Chicago's 96-76 win July 12 the exception.

While Chicago will be looking ahead, Connecticut seeks to end an injury-plagued season on a winning note and halt a four-game home slide. Star forward Chiney Ogwumike has missed the entire season and Alex Bentley, second to Bone with a 14.7 scoring average, will miss her ninth straight game with a right ankle injury.

The Sun completed a 2-2 trip with Wednesday's 74-64 loss to New York, as Bone finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

The Sky posted their third straight win, 92-71 over Tulsa on Friday in their home finale. Delle Donne scored 21 points, and Allie Quigley and Jessica Breland each added 14.

Chicago has won by an average of 23.7 points during this win streak that began after the last meeting with Connecticut.

Preview: Dream (14-19) at Mystics (18-15)

          Date: September 13, 2015 4:00 PM EDT

The Washington Mystics will try to take some momentum into the playoffs by avoiding a season sweep to an Atlanta Dream team that's heading home after this matchup Sunday.

Washington (18-15) has dropped all three meetings this season with Atlanta, including a 73-67 defeat last Sunday, and eight of 10 since the beginning of the 2013 playoffs.

The Dream (14-19) wish they could have fared as well against other opponents as they are set to miss the postseason for the first time since their inaugural 2008 campaign.

The first two matchups were decided by three points apiece. Atlanta star Angel McCoughtry scored five of her 21 points in the final 28 seconds in the only other game in Washington, a 64-61 victory June 12.

A win would give the Mystics the No. 3 seed for the Eastern Conference playoffs if Indiana loses to New York on Sunday. Washington would face Chicago in the opening round if that happens and would get league-best New York if it doesn't.

A series against the Sky would begin Thursday and a series against the Liberty would start Friday.

Washington enters this game having earned back-to-back wins after Friday's 82-55 rout of New York, which played its starters sparingly to rest up for the postseason.

Atlanta also had won two straight before losing 75-67 to Indiana on Friday. McCoughtry came off the bench for a fifth straight game and was held to 11 points on 4-of-12 shooting after averaging 24.8 points in the previous four.

Sancho Lyttle tied a season high with 19 points and had eight rebounds. She's averaging 16.3 points on 56.8 percent shooting and 9.7 boards in the past three games.

Lyttle had 16 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Washington last weekend. Tiffany Hayes (19 points) and McCoughtry (18) were the Dream's scoring leaders.

Ivory Latta scored 22 for the Mystics, giving her a combined 40 in the past two meetings with Atlanta, and she's made 14 of 25 shots in those matchups.

Atlanta forward DeLisha Milton-Jones would become the league's first player to appear in 500 games if she returns from a concussion that's kept her out of the past three. Milton-Jones, who turned 41 on Friday, broke Tina Thompson's WNBA record Aug. 28.

Preview: Mercury (20-13) at Shock (17-16)

            Date: September 13, 2015 4:30 PM EDT

By making the playoffs for the first time in six years, the Tulsa Shock are guaranteed at least one more home game before the franchise relocates to Texas.

The Phoenix Mercury will be their opponent for that game and Sunday's regular-season finale in Tulsa.

The final WNBA game in Oklahoma would be next Saturday if the Shock (17-16) fail to beat Phoenix in a best-of-three, opening-round series which begins Thursday. This playoff appearance is their only one since relocating from Detroit after the 2009 season.

The Shock are moving to the Dallas-Fort Worth area next season but will try to reward their current fans by securing the only winning season in their time in Oklahoma. They were a combined 41-129 in their first five in Tulsa.

The Shock have won their last five home games, beginning with a 74-59 victory over Phoenix on Aug. 18. They had lost the previous five meetings, including three this season.

Tulsa has dropped two of three overall following a 92-71 loss in Chicago on Friday.

Odyssey Sims, Karima Christmas, Plenette Pierson and Riquna Williams did not play in that game. Williams, who had a team-high 18 points in the win over Phoenix, has been out since Aug. 30 because of an injured left leg.

Vicki Baugh and Jordan Hooper set career highs Friday with 22 and 16 points, respectively, but the Shock's regulars might see some playing time in front of the home crowd.

Sims has averaged 25.5 points in her past four games but has been held to a more pedestrian 15.3 while shooting 32.0 percent in three matchups against Phoenix this season.

The Mercury (20-13) will try to earn a fourth consecutive win in their final tuneup before their title defense. Monique Currie had a season-best 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting in a 70-65 victory over Los Angeles on Friday, and Phoenix reached 20 wins in consecutive seasons for the first time.

Candice Dupree has averaged a team-best 19.5 points on 63.2 percent shooting against Tulsa this season, and leading scorer DeWanna Bonner has averaged 20.7 in the past three meetings.

Bonner, averaging 15.8 points overall, has scored in single digits in each of the last three games.

Preview: Liberty (23-10) at Fever (19-14)

              Date: September 13, 2015 5:00 PM EDT

The New York Liberty and Indiana Fever will face one another in Sunday's regular-season finale. Whether the teams meet again a few days later is yet to be determined.

New York (23-10), the Eastern Conference's top seed for the playoffs, will host either the Fever or Washington in Friday's Game 1 of the conference semifinals. Indiana (19-14) will avoid a rematch with a win or a Mystics' loss to Atlanta on Sunday, and that would leave the Fever as the No. 3 seed with a first-round series against Chicago.

Avoiding the No. 4 seed may not be to the Fever's advantage, though. Indiana has won three of four season meetings with the Liberty, including both at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, but is 0-4 against the Sky.

Building momentum is likely the more important goal for both teams, and Indiana got a good start with Friday's 75-67 victory at Atlanta. The Fever had lost two straight and five of six following a six-game winning streak which was capped by an 80-79 victory over the Liberty on Aug. 23.

Indiana used a balanced offense to prevail Friday despite holding out top scorer and rebounder Tamika Catchings. Shavonte Zellous led five Fever players in double figures with 14 points and Shenise Johnson added 13 with eight rebounds.

"Tonight was a good first step," Stephanie White told the team's official website after becoming the fifth rookie coach in WNBA history with at least 19 wins. "We got better defensively and a whole lot of people produced. Shenise played well and Zellous gave us a big game."

Already having clinched home-court advantage throughout the playoffs, the Liberty used most of their key players sparingly in Friday's 82-55 loss to Washington at Madison Square Garden. No New York starter played over 17 minutes in the team's first home game on Sept. 11 since the 2001 terror attacks.

"It's something special to be playing on this day for New York," said center and Queens native Tina Charles. "I just wish we could have put on a better show."

New York leads the WNBA in scoring defense (70.8 ppg) and field-goal percentage defense (39.3) but has struggled to stop Indiana this season. The Fever have averaged 80.8 points and shot 44.9 percent from 3-point range in the four meetings.

Reserve guard Maggie Lucas is 9 for 17 on 3s in the series while Johnson, fifth in the league in 3-point percentage (41.9), is 6 for 12.

                Stars-Storm Preview

The WNBA regular season will end with a whimper Sunday night when the league's worst teams meet, and one is trying to avoid a dubious piece of history.

The San Antonio Stars are out to end a franchise-record 10-game slide and avoid becoming the second team in league history to go winless on the road as they face the Seattle Storm.

San Antonio (7-26) will match the worst record in club history, set in 2005, with a loss Sunday. It would also give the Stars an 0-17 road mark that would be the worst in league history, with Washington going 0-15 in 1998.

It's a sad ending to the career of Sophia Young-Malcolm, who is retiring after this game. She is the franchise's all-time leading scorer with 4,311 points and helped lead the Stars to their lone WNBA finals appearance in 2008.

Young-Malcolm scored 12 points in her penultimate game, Tuesday's 74-64 defeat at Tulsa. Jia Perkins led the Stars with 24 points and nine rebounds.

Kayla McBride, who averages a team-high 13.8 points, and Danielle Robinson both sat out. They are listed as starters for Sunday's game according to the team's official game notes.

Seattle (10-23) is expected to have Sue Bird back in the lineup after the aging point guard was rested in Friday's 78-64 home victory over a Minnesota team that rested three of its best players. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis scored 16 points as the Storm ended a three-game slide.

Angel Goodrich started in place of Bird and scored a season-high 11 points with five assists.

"She ran our team well and I think that is indicative of us only having nine turnovers," coach Jenny Boucek told the club's official website. "Nine turnovers without the best point guard in the world says a lot about how we're growing in our efficiency offensively."

These are the league's lowest scoring teams, with Seattle averaging 70.8 points and San Antonio 68.3.

The Storm took the first two 2015 matchups before losing the next two in Seattle.

                    Sunday, Sept. 13

Ottawa RedBlacks (5-4 SU, 6-3 ATS) vs. British Columbia Lions (4-5 SU, 4-5 ATS)

                    Point-spread: BC -3 ½
                    Total: 50 ½

                    Game Overview

The RedBlacks remain in the thick of the East Division race after winning just two games last season as a first-year expansion team. Coming off a bye week, veteran CFL quarterback Henry Burris has proven that he still has some gas in the tank with 2,504 passing yards and 10 touchdown throws while completing 68.1 percent of his 313 attempts. Defensive end Jamaal Westerman leads the team in sacks with eight, which is also tied for most in the league.

BC quarterback Travis Lulay left last Thursday’s game in the first quarter with a knee injury and John Beck made the most of the opportunity by tossing two scores as part of a 14-for 22 performance that helped pace the upset. The Lions’ defense intercepted Montreal quarterback Tanner Marsh five times to help seal the win. BC is still just 2-4 ATS over its last six games.

                    Betting Trends

Ottawa won the first game in this season’s series on July 4 with a 27-10 victory as a 2 ½-point home underdog. BC won both meetings last season SU and the total has now stayed UNDER in all three games.

Tigers Verlander looks to stay hot versus Indians

The Detroit Tigers hope the Justin Verlander resurgence continues Sunday afternoon when the Tigers close out their series with the Cleveland Indians.

The former MVP and Cy Young award winner has pitched to a very good 1.27 ERA in his last six starts to go along with 39 strikeouts to 11 walks. He also has eight quality starts in his last nine outings.

Verlander is matched up against the Indians Cody Anderson. The Tigers are currently +152 road dogs.

Blue Jays Dickey goes for 11th straight win

A resurgent looking R.A. Dickey has been a big part of the Toronto Blue Jays success this season, as they try to win their 11th consecutive game in which the knuckleballer starts when he takes the mound at Yankee Stadium Sunday.

Dickey is 8-0 in those 10 starts, pitching to a very good 2.66 ERA to go along with 42 strikeouts to just 13 walks in the last 10 games.

Dickey and the Jays are currently +123 road dogs for the finale of the four-game series with the Bronx Bombers. Masahiro Tanaka gets the start for the Yankees, who are trying to avoid a four-game sweep.

Nationals RHP Storen breaks thumb during tantrum

Washington Nationals right-hander Drew Storen is expected to miss the rest of the season after breaking his right thumb during a fit of frustration, manager Matt Williams said Saturday.

The injury happened Wednesday, when an upset Storen slammed his locker after giving up a go-ahead home run to the New York Mets' Yoenis Cespedes in the eighth inning.

The injury was diagnosed after Storen was unable to throw Friday and told the team what had happened, Williams said.

Storen has 29 saves and a 3.44 ERA, but he has surrendered three runs in his past three innings over four games.

The day before he gave up the late homer to Cespedes, Storen walked three to blow a save in what turned into an 8-7 loss to the Mets.
