    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- There are ten players on NFL rosters who played D-III college football, where the players don't get scholarships, just financial aid based on need.

-- Announcers at the Louisiana Tech-Western Kentucky game on FS1 last night were not at WKU for the game; they worked the game from the FOX studio in LA.

-- Florida Gators scored 61 points last week, are changing starting QBs this week.

-- NC State landed a terrific PG in Dennis Smith, best PG left in Class of '16.

-- Mariners 5, Rangers 0-- King Felix blanked Texas for eight innings for the win.

-- Somehow I can't picture Wellington Mara or Dan Rooney strutting across a field with the Lombardi Trophy to taunt the rest of the NFL, the way Robert Kraft did last night with his hideous imitation of Vince McMahon.

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend.....

    13) Everyone on TV is picking the Colts to win the AFC but they're only -3 in their opener at Buffalo. Why so low? Buffalo hasn't made the playoffs since 1999; their QB has never started an NFL game. I'm so confused......

    12) Oregon is an underdog for the first time in their last 46 games; they whacked Michigan State 46-27 LY in Eugene. Can they win in East Lansing with a QB who played the last three years at the I-AA level?

    11) How will the two rookie QBs do in the Florida heat late Sunday afternoon down in Tampa? Defensive coordinators will challenge them with a variety of blitzes.

    10) Blue Jays-Bronx got rained out last night; they'll play a twinbill Saturday, as part of a 4-game series that will go long way towards determining the AL East winner.

    9) Will Sam Bradford stay in one piece? He's missed 31 games out of 80 in his first five NFL seasons. If Bradford gets hurt, the Eagles QB is Mark Sanchez.

    8) Did LSU getting rained out last week hurt their prep for Mississippi State this week? Their offense/defense played one series each last week against McNeese State, while MSU played a fairly tough game at Southern Miss.

    7) How much will Jordy Nelson's injury hurt the Packers? Green Bay has treated the Bears like a pinata recently; will it continue Sunday in Chicago?

    6) Iowa-Iowa State is an underrated rivalry; last four series games were all decided by six or less points. Hawkeyes are 3-5 in last five visits to Ames.

    5) Cleveland Browns are 1-15 in season openers; they visit a Jets squad with new QB, new coach and a less-than-stellar record at home.

    4) Rutgers won 41-38 at Washington State LY; Wazzu lost at home to a I-AA team last week, really needs a win here, before heading into a tough Pac-12.

    3) Who will fill Demarco Murray's shoes in Dallas? Cowboys averaged 5.9 yards per carry when they ran ball on first down LY. He will be missed.

    2) Memphis is a two-TD favorite at Kansas; this is sixth time Tigers have been a road favorite since 2013. From 2006-12, they were never once favored on the road. Coach Justin Fuente has done a terrific job, could be moving up the coaching ladder soon.

    1) Can Denver's rebuilt OL protect immobile, 39-year old Peyton Manning?

Enjoy the first full football weekend of the year; it should be fun.

          MLB roundup: Mariners blank Rangers

SEATTLE -- Felix Hernandez extended the Texas Rangers' offensive woes and Seattle teammate Nelson Cruz made a triumphant return from a quad injury in the Mariners' 5-0 win on Thursday that salvaged a split in the four-game series.

Hernandez pitched eight scoreless innings and Tom Wilhelmsen finished as the Rangers were unable to score a run for the second game in a row. Texas has struggled through 18 consecutive scoreless innings while falling 2 1/2 games behind first-place Houston in the American League West.

Cruz went 2-for-4 in his first game in a week, with a two-run homer in the seventh inning that essentially put the game out of reach. Mark Trumbo added two hits and two RBIs as Seattle won for the seventh time in nine games.

          Reds 11, Cardinals 0

CINCINNATI -- Home runs by Brandon Phillips and Todd Frazier helped rookie John Lamb to his first career victory as Cincinnati hammered St. Louis.

Phillips homered in the seventh inning and former Cardinal Skip Schumaker drove in two runs with a pinch-double, making the score 9-0.

Frazier went 3-for-5 with a double, three runs and three RBIs. He hit his 32nd homer of the season, a two-run blast in the eighth.

Lamb threw five shutout innings during his sixth career start since being acquired from the Kansas City Royals in the Johnny Cueto trade.

          Brewers 6, Pirates 4 (13 innings)

PITTSBURGH -- Logan Schafer and Luis Sardinas, who entered the game earlier as reserves, hit consecutive run-scoring singles with two outs in the top of the 13th inning to give Milwaukee a victory over Pittsburgh.

The Pirates remained 4 1/2 games behind St. Louis in the National League Central. Pittsburgh's lead for the first NL wild card was sliced to 2 1/2 games over the Chicago Cubs, who were rained out at Philadelphia.

The Brewers won their seventh straight game against the Pirates and have beaten them nine times in their last 10 meetings.

          Rockies 4, Padres 3

SAN DIEGO -- Daniel Descalso greeted Joaquin Benoit with Colorado's fourth solo homer of the game in the eighth inning to lift the Rockies over San Diego in the hottest game in the 12-year history of Petco Park.

The 93-degree temperature at game time for the makeup of the first July rainout in Padres history in San Diego stands as the fourth-highest temperature ever for the start of a major league game in San Diego.

Descalso's 409-foot drive to right off Benoit, who had missed the past four days with back spasms, came on a full-count pitch. An inning earlier, the Rockies had completed a rally from a 3-1 deficit when they tied the score at 3 on Carlos Gonzalez's opposite-field home run into the left-field corner.

Nolan Arenado, the National League leader in homers and RBIs, gave the Rockies a 1-0 lead in the first with his 38th homer of the year. After the Padres took a 3-1 lead, Colorado's Corey Dickerson homered to right center in the sixth to trim San Diego's lead to 3-2.

          Indians 7, Tigers 5

CLEVELAND -- Michael Brantley's home runs in the seventh and eighth innings lifted Cleveland over Detroit.

Brantley broke a 3-3 tie with a home run leading off the seventh inning when the Indians took a 5-3 lead. After Detroit scored twice in the top of the eighth to tie it, Brantley homered in the bottom of the inning.

Cody Allen pitched the last 1 2/3 innings to get the win.

          Mets 7, Braves 2

ATLANTA -- Bartolo Colon's scoreless streak ended, but the 42-year-old pitched well enough to earn his 14th win as the New York Mets beat Atlanta at Turner Field.

Colon extended his scoreless streak to 31 innings before the Braves scratched for a pair of runs in the seventh inning. It was the team's longest scoreless streak since R.A. Dickey set the franchise record of 32 2/3 innings in 2012.

Kevin Plawecki had a double and three RBIs, and third baseman Jose Uribe was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs for the Mets. Atlanta pitcher Shelby Miller allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings, with five strikeouts and two walks, and has lost 13 straight games.

          Yankees-Blue Jays, ppd., rain

NEW YORK -- The race for first place in the American League East wound up getting an unscheduled night off. Heavy rains at Yankee Stadium postponed the Toronto-New York game, which will be made up as part of a single-admission doubleheader on Saturday.

David Price was scheduled to oppose rookie Luis Severino on Thursday night, and that matchup will now occur Friday.

          Phillies-Cubs, ppd., rain

PHILADELPHIA -- Thursday's rained-out game will be made up as part of a doubleheader starting at 5:05 p.m. ET Friday.

Chance of rain in Cleveland Friday

According to weather forecasts, there is a 58 percent chance of rain that could fall at Progressive Field in Cleveland when the Indians host the Detroit Tigers Thursday evening.

Furthermore, wind will blow in from centerfield at around 12 miles per hour during the game.

Pirates can't seem to solve Brewers in recent meetings

The Milwaukee Brewers have won seven-straight ball games versus the Pittsburgh Pirates heading into Friday's meeting at PNC Park.

The Brew Crew trumped the Buccos 6-4 Thursday evening and have now outscored their NL Central rivals by a tally of 45-22 over the course of those seven games.

Jimmy Nelson is expected to get the start for the Brewers (+164) while Charlie Morton is probable to toe the slab for the Pirates (-178).

Hey Udog---Those Buffalo Bills might surprise you Sun. That defense is for real--not sure Indy's offensive line is ready for this kind of test yet. Browns played them in 2nd preseason gm and they gave our offensive line fits. And that new QB is better than people think. He's on the order of Colin Kaepernick and the new OC is the guy from SF who developed Kaepernick.

You could be right on the button RS. I think that low line is due strictly to the Bills' D. If the linesetters are on track, it'll be a helluva game.

It's been a rough start in Kansas City for Johnny Cueto, who has been lit up in his last four starts. Cueto (9-11, 3.24 ERA) has surrendered 22 runs on 37 hits over 20 innings in four consecutive losses. Three of those losses came at home in Kansas City, where he is 2-4 with a 4.50 ERA this season. His next start comes on the road in Baltimore, and the Orioles tagged him for six runs on eight hits in five innings in a home loss at the end of August.

                      Capital Punishment

It was just a few days ago that Washington appeared to have the Mets on their heels, but after dropping all three games in a home series versus New York this week, the Nats are 7.5 games back in the NL East. Now they head out on the road to take on the Marlins in a three game series in Maimi. Washington has not performed well on the road, losing 12 of it's last 16.

                      Something Brewin'?

The Brewers upset the Pirates in Game 1 of this four game series in Pittsburgh on Thursday night. They won by a score of 6-4 in extra-innings, defeating the Pirates for the ninth time in the last 10 meetings between the two teams. The series wraps up on Sunday, and Taylor Jungmann will get the start for Milwaukee in the finale. He's 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA against the Pirates this season.

                      Hitting Notes

                      * Boston's rookie center fielder Mookie Betts is on fire over the last seven days, batting .500 (12-for-24) with a home run and six RBIs. He was 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs in Boston's win over the Blue Jays on Wednesday.

                      * Kyle Seager is sizzlin' out in Seattle in September. He's 15-for-32 (.469) with a pair of home runs and nine RBIs since Sept. 1. He has a favorable matchup this weekend facing the Rockies at home. Colorado's pitching staff ranks dead last in the majors with a 5.09 ERA.

                      Pitching Notes

                      * Jake Arrieta followed up his no-hitter versus the Dodgers by tossing eight scoreless innings at home versus Arizona, and he's allowed just one (unearned) run over his last four starts. His next scheduled start comes on Friday in a matinee against the Phillies.

                      * Marcus Stroman is set to make his season debut for the Blue Jays on Saturday in the Bronx. He was 11-6 with a 3.65 ERA as a rookie last year, and he was 2-1 with a 2.55 ERA in three starts versus the Yankees.

                      Totals Streak

The Pirates host the Brewers this weekend, and both these teams are trending toward high scoring games. The Brewers have won nine of the last 10 in the series, and nine of those 10 games went over the total. The Pirates have seen the total go over in eight of their last 10 overall, while the Brewers have gone over at a rate of 12-3-2 in their last 17 on the road.

                      Injury Notes

                      * Josh Hamilton will have minor knee surgery on Friday, but he's expected to return before the end of the season. The Rangers are right in the thick of things in the Wild Card race, and may well be playing in the playoffs.

                      * Mark Buehrle received a cortisone shot on September 8, and he's expected to be skipped in his next spot in the rotation as he rests a sore left shoulder.

                      Umpire Notes

                      * The over has gone 4-0 in the last four ball games that Manny Gonzalez has worked home plate. He's expected to be behind the dish in Pittsburgh when the Pirates host the Brewers Friday.

                      * The Cincinnati Reds have gone 5-1 in their last six games when Jim Joyce is calling balls strikes. He's scheduled to work home place in Cincy when the Reds host the Cardinals Saturday.

                      Weather Notes

                      * There is a 58 percent chance of rain that could fall at Progressive Field in Cleveland when the Indians host the Detroit Tigers Thursday evening. Furthermore, wind will blow in from centerfield at around 12 miles per hour during the game.
