    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Some trends to ponder for Week 1 NFL games.........

-- Broncos' coach Gary Kubiak was the Ravens' OC last season.

-- Since 2002, defending Super Bowl champ is 8-3-2 vs spread in its next opener.

-- Since 2002, Super Bowl loser is 2-11 vs spread in its opener the next season.

-- Last three years, Indy is 8-3-1 as road favorite, 13-9-1 vs spread in games where spread was 3 or less points.

-- Cowboys are 8-24 as home favorites since 2010, 3-9 in divisional games; they covered once in last six tries as a favorite in their home opener.

-- Over is 11-5 in Philadelphia road games under Chip Kelly.

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud......

    13) In Monday's Dodger-Angel game, 14 relief pitchers combined to get 23 outs, as a sleep-inducing parade of relief pitchers came in from each bullpen. Hopefully next year, they will put an end to September roster expansion-- it is not good.

This game took 3:52 to play and the pace of play was fine, when they weren't changing pitchers. Each pitching change during an inning adds maybe 4-5 minutes?

    12) Dodgers have used four different leadoff hitters the last four games; the last two led off the game with home runs, Justin Ruggiano and Scott Schebler, not exactly the kind of names you'd expect to be leading off for a team with a $300M payroll.

    11) Texas Longhorns lost 38-3 at Notre Dame and have already changed play callers, not that they're panicking or anything. The new playcaller last chose plays for UCLA way back in 2007. Why exactly did they fire Mack Brown?

    10) Cole Hamels is the first pitcher to be traded by a team during the same season in which he threw a no-hitter for that team.

    9) Our daily note on Mets' OF Michael Conforto: his mom won two gold medals in the Olympics in synchronized swimming. His dad played football at Penn State.

    8) Miami's J.T. Realmuto is first catcher with an inside-the-park HR and a regular HR in same game since Gary Carter in 1980

    7) Not only has Atlanta used 36 pitchers this season, 18 of 36 weren't in big league spring training with the Braves.

    6) Oakland gave manager Bob Melvin a well-deserved contract extension thru 2018, as this nightmare of a season winds down. A's made the playoffs the last three years, but the front office dismantled the lineup last year and this season has mostly been a dumpster fire combining horrible fielding with cruddy relief pitching.

    5) Beverly Hills HS has a gym with a pool underneath the basketball floor; this is simply tremendous!!!! Wonder if it makes the gym more humid.

    4) Don't tell me baseball isn't a mental game; Red Sox are 14-7 since they announced Dave Dombrowski s the team's new head honcho.

    3) Race car driver Denny Hamlin tore his ACL playing basketball, but won't miss any races, because if you drive a race car for a living, you're tough.

I mean seriously, if you screwed up your knee, it would be agony just to sit in a car for 500 miles without getting out now and then to stretch out and he can't take pain killers, because he's driving a damn car 180 miles an hour. Good grief.

    2) Sam Bradford will wait until after the season to negotiate a new contract, which is an interesting strategy for a guy who missed 31 of 80 games in his NFL career, with an 18-30-1 record in the 49 games he did play.

Of course, when you've already banked $65M in the first five years of your career, it is easier to take that gamble. If he stays healthy, he's a good player. Big if.

    1) Joey Votto bugged out in the 8th inning last night, getting ejected after a marginal pitch was called a strike. Odd thing is, he didn't strike out on the pitch; it merely made the count 1-2, but it sent Votto over the edge and he got tossed. Votto is famous for having a good eye at the plate; he draws a lot of walks.

Under has been oddly hot in Jays-Yankees meetings

For two major league clubs that boast such impressive bats, it's certainly an anomaly that the Under is so hot when the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays tangle.

The Under has cashed in the past seven meetings between the two AL East rivals and they'll renew acquaintances Thursday evening in the Bronx.

The clubs are averaging just 4.3 runs combined per meeting in those last seven games, which dates back to a 5-1 Jays win back on May 6.

Favorites cash for bettors on the diamond

Favorites were the side to back in Major League Baseball action Wednesday night, going a solid 11-4 straight up, cashing at a rate of 73.33 percent.

Baltimore, Boston, Minnesota and Seattle were the four dogs to pull off a win yesterday.

Make sure to check out our Scores and Matchups page to see if favorites can keep the trend going Thursday.

              Astros make homer-hitting history

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Houston Astros made some home run-hitting history Wednesday as they powered their way to an 11-5 victory against the Oakland A's.

The Astros hit four home runs, including a solo shot by first baseman Marwin Gonzalez in the seventh inning, his 10th of the season. Gonzalez became the 11th Astro with double-digit home runs, which tied a major league record set by the Detroit Tigers in 2004.

Outfielder Jake Marisnick has nine home runs, and infielder Jed Lowrie has eight, so the Astros should own the record outright before long.

The Astros also had home runs from left fielder Colby Rasmus (19), designated Evan Gattis (23) and center fielder Carlos Gomez, who has three home runs since coming to Houston in a trade from Milwaukee.

MLB roundup: Mets complete sweep of Nationals

WASHINGTON -- Yoenis Cespedes hit a two-run homer off Drew Storen in the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie and the New York Mets stunned the Washington Nationals 5-3 on Wednesday night to sweep the three-game series and seriously damage the home team's playoff chances.

Kelly Johnson led off the eighth with a pinch-homer off Stephen Strasburg to tie the score 2-2. It was the second pinch-homer of his career.

The Mets, with three comeback wins in a row, lead the National League East by seven games over the Nationals with 23 games left. Washington has lost six in a row to the Mets after winning the season series 15-4 in 2014.

Bryce Harper hit a solo homer in the eighth off Tyler Clippard to pull the Nationals within 4-3. It was the second solo homer of the game for Harper, who had three hits.

              Cardinals 4, Cubs 3

ST. LOUIS -- Six outs away from absorbing a three-game sweep that would have sent St. Louis on the road with a four-game losing streak, the Cardinals stunned Chicago with a three-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning to salvage the series finale at Busch Stadium.

Stephen Piscotty supplied the winning hit, lacing the first pitch from Fernando Rodney to the center field wall for a two-run double that scored Peter Bourjos and Matt Carpenter.

The Cubs saw their five-game winning streak end, and they fell 7 1/2 games in arrears of the Cardinals. They also trail Pittsburgh by 2 1/2 games for the first NL wild-card spot.

Chicago wasted a dominant outing from starter Jon Lester, who allowed only two hits and a run in seven innings, walking one and fanning seven.

Red Sox 10, Blue Jays 4

BOSTON – Joe Kelly won his eighth straight start, Ryan Hanigan had three hits, a walk and three RBIs and David Ortiz hit the 498th career homer to lift last-place Boston to its fifth win in the last six games.

Mookie Betts, extending his hitting streak to 15 games, homered and doubled in the Red Sox's 13-hit attack.

Toronto manager John Gibbons emptied the bench in the sixth inning knowing his team, trailing 10-1 at the time, was headed to New York for a four-game weekend battle for first place with the Yankees. Only Chris Colabello remained in the game and he drilled a three-run homer in the eighth.

              Orioles 5, Yankees 3

NEW YORK -- Steve Pearce broke a tie with a one-out solo home run in the top of the eighth inning as Baltimore rallied past New York.

A night after Chris Davis opened the ninth with a tiebreaking home run off Chasen Shreve, Pearce drove a 2-2 breaking ball from Adam Warren over the left-center field fence for his 10th home run of the season.

Pearce's homer gave Baltimore its fifth win in the last 20 games. It also prevented the Yankees from potentially moving within a half-game of first-place Toronto, which visits New York for a four-game series this weekend.

Davis drove in two runs for Baltimore, getting a bloop single in the first inning and a ground-rule double in the ninth.

DETROIT -- Jake Odorozzi pitched six shutout innings for his first victory in his last eight starts and the Tampa Bay offense backed him with four solo home runs.

Nick Markakis, Freddie Freeman and Hector Olivera all reached base four times for Atlanta, with Markakis scoring two runs and Freeman contributing a two-run single. Christian Bethancourt homered and had three of Atlanta's season-high 18 hits.

              Marlins 5, Brewers 2

MIAMI -- Christian Yelich hit a tiebreaking, two-run double in the seventh inning and Tom Koehler snapped a long losing streak as Miami defeated Milwaukee.

Koehler, who had lost his past seven starts, including a franchise-record 0-6 record in August, pitched eight innings and struck out a career-high-tying 10 batters. He allowed four hits, two walks and two runs. A.J. Ramos pitched a scoreless ninth for his 25th save.

Miami got to Milwaukee's bullpen in the seventh. Miguel Rojas worked a one-out walk against Tyler Cravy before Dee Gordon got a free pass from Will Smith. That set up Yelich, who hit a two-out, opposite-field double to left center. Martin Prado capped the three-run inning with an RBI double.

CHICAGO -- Francisco Lindor came within a double of hitting for the cycle to lead Cleveland over Chicago.

Josh Tomlin allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings in a win for Cleveland, which won two of three games in the series. Jeff Samardzija lost for the seventh time in his past eight outings.

Jason Kipnis went 2-for-5 with an RBI for Cleveland, which got a solo homer from Jose Ramirez. Chicago's first three runs were solo homers off right-hander Josh Tomlin by Trayce Thompson, Tyler Saladino and first baseman Jose Abreu.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Miguel Sano hit a pinch home run with two outs in the 12th inning, lifting Minnesota to a victory over Kansas City.

Blaine Boyer (3-4) retired all five batters he faced to pick up the victory. Kevin Jepsen worked a spotless 12th to log his seventh save in as many opportunities since being acquired by the Twins on July 31. He has 12 saves on the year, counting his time with the Tampa Bay Rays.

PHOENIX -- Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning and rookie right-hander Zack Godley gave up one run in five-plus innings in Arizona's victory over San Francisco at Chase Field.

Saltalamacchia homered off right-hander Chris Heston with one out in the fourth inning, his second homer in as many games, after David Peralta doubled. Saltalamacchia was a late addition to the lineup after starter Welington Castillo was scratched because of a sore wrist.

Godley (5-1) gave up three singles, struck out five and walked one. The Giants' only run scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning. Godley, who started the season at Class A Visalia, has made seven appearances this season, five starts, since making his major league debut July 23.

              Angels 3, Dodgers 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Albert Pujols' RBI single in the eighth inning drove home Kole Calhoun with the tiebreaking run, lifting the Angels to a win over the Dodgers at Angel Stadium.

The Angels prevented the Dodgers from sweeping the three-game series.

The Angels moved within 3 1/2 games of the Texas Rangers for the American League's second wild-card spot.

Nuno (1-2) struck out a career-high 10 and walked two in the win. Seattle relievers Danny Farquhar and Carson Smith each threw a perfect inning to complete the one-hitter.

              Pirates 5, Reds 4

CINCINNATI -- Jung Ho Kang hit his first career grand slam and J.A. Happ allowed two runs in six-plus innings, then Pittsburgh held on to defeat Cincinnati at Great American Ball Park.

Pittsburgh took two of three in the series to increase its lead to three games over the Chicago Cubs for the National League's top wild-card spot and stayed within 4 1/2 games of first-place St. Louis in the NL Central.

Happ (9-7) gave up only three hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts.

Braves Miller tries to win for first time in 21 starts

Talk about a hard luck season. The Atlanta Braves starter Shelby Miller hasn't won a game in his last 20 starts, despite pitching to a very good 2.81 ERA this season.

Miller will try to end the ridiculous drought when the New York Mets come to town Thursday night. The Braves are currently +137 dogs going up against the ageless Bartolo Colon.

Chance of thunderstorms at PETCO Thursday

There could be some weather on tap for Thursday afternoon's contest between the Rockies and Padres at PETCO Park in San Diego.

There is a chance of thunderstorms in the forecast to go along with an 18 percent chance of rain. There will also be a slight five mile per hour wind blowing out to right center field.

The Padres are currently -151 home favorites and send Tyson Ross (3.21 ERA, 15-12 O/U) to the mound to take on the Rockies Jorge De La Rosa (4.24 ERA, 11-13 O/U). The total sits at 7.5.

Rockies don't enjoy their trips to San Diego

The Colorado Rockies have struggled when traveling to San Diego to take on the Padres at PETCO Park, winning just four times in their last 21 trips there.

The odds are the trend continues Thursday as Rockies close out a four game series and are currently +138 underdogs.

The Rockies send Jorge De La Rosa (4.24, 11-13 O/U) to the mound to take on the Padres Tyson Ross (3.21 ERA, 15-12 O/U).
