        Trends To Watch - September

        September 9, 2015

The pig is finally in the air.

That means it is now September and with it an array of NFL handicapping team trends are suddenly in play for fans and ‘players’ alike.

Listed below are some of the best and worst team performances during the opening month of September. Team breakdowns include records at home, away, as a favorite, as an underdog, and in division games. All results are ATS (Against The Spread) unless noted otherwise.

Remember, as the late, great Howard Cosell once said, “What’s right isn’t always popular. What’s popular isn’t always right.”

        Play accordingly.

        HOME TEAMS

        Keep an eye on (Good):

Detroit has been notorious fast starters for years and is 29-16 ATS on a field where Eminem calls home. The lone home game will not be easy, facing Denver.

Baltimore is still a respectable 28-16 ATS at home, but is not as strong under coach John Harbaugh. Let's see if they flex their muscles against Cincinnati on the 27th of the month.

        Keep an eye on (Bad):

Arizona is just 14-23 ATS in the desert this month and has home games against New Orleans in Week 1 and San Francisco in Week 3. Definitely worth watching.

The New York Jets have Ryan Fitzpatrick as their signal caller for now. Cleveland is in New Jersey for the season lid-lifter and Philadelphia two weeks later as the Flyboys try and improve on 18-28 ATS mark the first month of the season at home.

Cincinnati is a miserable 15-25 ATS this month and probably fortunately just has San Diego in Week 2 on the banks of the Ohio River.

Washington has been laboring at home for years and is 16-27 ATS before the home crowd. Having Miami and St. Louis the first two weeks, we will find out quickly if Robert Griffin III is really is among the best quarterbacks in the NFL as he recently proclaimed, or whether Kirk Cousins is really the answer.

        AWAY TEAMS

        Keep an eye on (Good):

Kansas City is money on the road to begin the season at 30-17 ATS and has two chances to better that record: In the opener at Houston and the Week 3 Monday nighter at Lambeau.

Dallas was 8-0 and 7-1 ATS last season in away outings, which helped build a recent 29-16 ATS mark. That makes the Week 2 battle at Philly worth waiting for.

        Keep an eye on (Bad):

It has never made sense why a franchise as consistently good as Pittsburgh struggles early on the road and is a dismal 15-29 ATS. They might catch a bit of a break being in New England for Game 1 of the season. Seventeen days later they will be in St. Louis.

Speaking of the Rams, they are only marginally better at 15-28 ATS, but found a home team as bad as they are in Washington, leaving football bettors to choose the lesser of two evils.

        FAVORITES

        Keep an eye on (Good):

Seattle is a rock solid 29-16 ATS favorite, however, like usual will be tested at St. Louis in the opener. Two weeks later they will likely have an easier time facing Jay Cutler and the Bears.

        Bad:

With the Cardinals a lousy home team, it stands to reason they would be a mediocre favorite. At 7-18 ATS in September, this is as bad as it gets, so let's see of the Saints and Niners can expose them again as frauds in that role.

If you have too much money, we have a perfect solution... bet Carolina as favorites this month. The Panthers are 8-18 and should be favored in all three games in September!

St. Louis fits the bill also at 12-25 ATS, however, we know they will not be a favorite against Seattle in the first contest and chances are will not being handing out points at the Redskins or home to Pittsburgh. Watch the numbers and keep this in mind.

        UNDERDOGS

        Good:

The Dallas Cowboys thrive in this role at a sensational 26-12 against the number. Their Week 2 showdown at Philly will be their lone chance to improve on record.

        Keep an eye on (Good):

With road games at Houston and Green Bay, Kansas City will be an underdog and seeking to improve on 27-17 ATS. In between those contests is a home date with rival Denver and based on the past two years in this matchup at Arrowhead, the Chiefs might actually not be favored until their fifth contest.

        Bad:

We already mentioned the Steelers slow starts and they are 10-21 ATS when catching points this month. They are underdogs at New England, with a Week 3 nonconference clash at St. Louis to be determined later.

        DIVISION

        Good:

The Chiefs home opener will on Thursday night against Denver on the 17th and K.C. is a dandy 23-11 ATS in that role.

        Keep an eye on (Bad):

With New England's quarterback situation temporarily settled with Tom Brady back, we’ll see whether the added weight and the bull eye of being defending Super Bowl champs weighs on the Pats disappointing 16-24 ATS vs. the AFC East.

Cincinnati is a fairly disheartening 13-20 ATS against the AFC North early on, and its first division confrontation of 2015 will be at Baltimore.

I’ll be back next month with our review of NFL trends for October.

        Good luck this month.

          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Week 2

          Thursday's game
Short week for both sides here, but Western Kentucky was outgained at Vanderbilt 393-247, had to stop 2-point conversion in last minute to avoid OT and win 14-12. Hilltoppers (+7) lost 59-10 at Louisiana Tech LY, giving up a total of 507 yards. WKU is 7-13 in last 20 tries as home favorite. Tech crushed a cupcake last week; their QB is former Florida Gator Driskel; Bulldogs are 12-4 in last 16 games as a road underdog.

          Friday's games
Since 2012, Florida Atlantic is 20-12 vs spread as an underdog; Owls (+7) lost 47-44 in Tulsa last week; they ran ball for 317 yards, were +4 in turnovers, still lost in OT. FAU (+31) lost 34-6 in only previous game with Miami, two years ago. Owls have an experienced QB. Miami hosts Nebraska next week; this game means more to FAU. 'canes are 22-32 as a home favorite the last decade- they whacked a cupcake last week.

Utah won 13 of last 14 games with Utah State (3-4 vs spread last seven); State lost last seven visits here, with four of the last five by 16+ points. Utah State is 3-5 as road dog under coach Wells, after being 14-2 when Anderson was coach. Aggies struggled mightily to beat Southern Utah 12-9 last week- Utah beat Michigan 24-17 in a national TV game-- both games were Thursday, so teams have proper rest. State's Keeton is in his sixth year as a college QB (got injury waiver LY).

              Wednesday's Tip Sheet

              September 9, 2015

New York Mets at Washington Nationals | 7:05 p.m. ET (ESPN)

In game one of tonight’s ESPN Wednesday Night Baseball doubleheader, the wild and craziness that is the NL East race continues as the first-place Mets look to complete a sweep of the spiraling Nationals. If ever there could be a regular season must-win game on Sept. 9, this is probably it as far as the Nats are concerned, considering there’s no realistic way they can attain a Wild Card berth so first-place in the division is their only potential route to the playoffs. A loss here would drop them seven games back and they’ll turn to Stephen Strasburg (8-6, 4.35 ERA) this evening to prevent that from happening. Fortunately for Washington, Strasburg has looked strong since coming back from his most recent stint on the disabled list, as he’s 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA in five starts over that stretch. Most impressively, he’s compiled an absolutely marvelous 35/3 K/BB ratio in the process over 30 innings pitched. The linesmakers have Strasburg as a -120 favorite despite the Nationals’ recent woes in this series.

That makes Jacob deGrom (12-7, 2.40 ERA) a very intriguing +100 road ’dog when he takes the hill for the surging Mets, who look like they have a special run brewing. However, if New York is to complete the sweep, they’ll need deGrom to work his way out of the rare rough patch he’s currently mired in, as the 27-year-old is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in his last three starts. Interestingly, deGrom will be opposing the Nats for the fifth time this season -- he's faced no other team more than three times this year -- and posted pretty good results in the first four, as he registered a 3.47 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and .225 BAA to go with a 25/5 K/BB ratio in those assignments. Surprisingly, the over/under is rising to 7.5 in some shops after opening at 7 -- these two hurlers met earlier in the year with a line of 6.5.

Pittsburgh Pirates at Cincinnati Reds | 7:10 p.m. ET

Even with five straight starts of allowing one earned run or less, J.A. Happ (8-7, 3.90 ERA) still seems to be flying under the radar as far as this year’s trade deadline acquisitions go. Happ, who was acquired in a quiet deadline deal from the Mariners, has been absolutely incredible for the Pirates, who weren’t exactly sure what they were getting, considering the left-hander’s inconsistent showing throughout much of the campaign. Miraculously, Happ is now one start away of allowing one run or less in his effort of tying the franchise-best for such a feat since 1969 (previously accomplished by John Candelaria in 1982). Pittsburgh hopes he can keep it up, as they try to stave off the Cubs for the top Wild Card spot, which would reward home-field advantage in the play-in game. Happ’s marvelous run has led the linesmakers to peg him as a -150 road favorite.

Meanwhile, the division rival Reds are stuck in a lost season, clearly illustrated by the fact that they continue to trot out rookie starting pitchers on a nightly basis. Keyvius Sampson (2-3, 6.68 ERA) is one such rookie getting the chance to audition for Cincinnati’s 2016 pitching rotation, but his involvement hasn’t exactly panned out thus far. After a promising first few starts when initially called up on July 30, Sampson has struggled mightily over his past five, posting a 9.00 ERA during that span, and he hasn’t pitched more than four innings in any of his past four outings. The linesmakers have the over/under at 8.5.

Houston Astros at Oakland Athletics | 10:05 p.m. ET

The Astros are starting to slump at the wrong time, and find themselves in danger of being swept by the last-place Athletics. Houston has dropped the first two games in this series, resulting in their first-place lead in the AL West shrinking to a mere single game over Texas, but luckily for them, they have hot starting pitcher Collin McHugh (15-7, 3.75 ERA) toeing the rubber to try and get them back on track. McHugh has been excellent over the past couple of months, specifically in his last six starts, in which he’s posted a 1.54 ERA. The most telling evidence, however, for McHugh to continue his run through tonight has to do with his experience opposing the Athletics. Since coming to Houston last year, the former New York Met has faced them three times, leading to a 2-1 record, 1.77 ERA, and 0.93 WHIP. The over/under for this one is 7.5.

Looking to complete a rare sweep of the team that sits at the top of their division, the A’s will send out rookie Aaron Brooks (1-2, 6.91 ERA) -- no, not the former New Orleans Saints quarterback or current Chicago Bulls guard -- who will be making his sixth start for the club since being acquired from Kansas City in the Ben Zobrist deal. After beginning his tenure in Oakland with a couple of impressive seven-inning performances, Brooks has begun to live up to the awful numbers he had prior to arriving in the Bay Area, as he’s surrendered six runs or more in two of his past three outings. As a result, it’s no wonder to see him listed as a +140 home ’dog.

Los Angeles Dodgers at Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | 10:05 p.m. ET (ESPN)

The Freeway Series comes to a halt this year as the two Los Angeles baseball teams meet for the final time in ’15 in the second game of ESPN’s doubleheader tonight. Of course, the Dodgers have already taken the season series -- they've beaten the Angels eight straight times, as a matter of fact -- and are just looking to further pad their comfy 8.5-game lead over the San Francisco Giants atop the NL West, which is actually the biggest margin for first-place in the National League. That must be why the Dodgers don’t mind extending their leash on struggling right-hander Mat Latos (4-9, 4.92 ERA), who takes the ball for the division leaders in the series finale. One of their acquisitions around the trade deadline, Latos has actually mightily disappointed since first donning the Dodger blue, owning a 6.56 ERA and 1.54 WHIP in five winless starts with the club. Furthermore, he’s escaped the fifth inning just once, making this an important outing for the 27-year-old if he wants a shot at cracking the postseason rotation. In any event, he’s a +125 road ’dog.

The Angels certainly would love to be in the position that their crosstown rivals are currently in, as LA’s American League team has been freefalling through this Freeway Series. They’re 6-12 in their last 18 games, while sliding down in the playoff picture but at the same time, they’re still very much alive, being just 4.5 games back of the second Wild Card spot and only 5.5 behind first-place Houston in the AL West. Garrett Richards (13-10, 3.77 ERA) will lead the effort in trying to salvage this Interleague season series for the Halos, hoping to keep up his fine pitching as of late. In fact, he’s recorded five quality starts in his past six tries, and has gone six innings or more in 14 of his last 16 assignments. The oddsmakers have understandably set the over/under as high as 8, considering the presence of the mercurial Latos.

                Angels look to avoid sweep

                September 9, 2015

LOS ANGELES DODGERS (80-58) at LOS ANGELES ANGELS (69-69)

First pitch: Wednesday, 10:05 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: LA Dodgers +130, LA Angels -140, Total: 8

The Dodgers will be going for their sixth straight victory when they face the Angels on Wednesday.

Don Mattingly’s team is as hot as could be recently, winning five straight contests and 12 of its past 14. The Dodgers are now 8.5 games up on the Giants and their +77 run differential is third in the NL. They’ll look to complete a sweep on Wednesday against an Angels team that has lost three of its past four and eight of its past 13 as well.

Starting for the Dodgers in this game will be RHP Mat Latos (4-9, 4.92 ERA, 95 K) and he’ll be up against RHP Garrett Richards (13-10, 3.77 ERA, 131 K) for the Angels. The Dodgers have gotten the better of the Angels in this matchup recently, going 5-0 in their meetings this season. They are also 4-2 on the road in this matchup over the past three seasons. The Dodgers are a remarkable 28-8 against the money line after having won 12 or more of their past 15 games over the past three seasons. The Angels, however, are an impressive 32-12 against the money line as a favorite of -125 to -175.

C Yasmani Grandal (Shoulder) and OF Yasiel Puig (Hamstring) are out indefinitely for the Dodgers and SS Jimmy Rollins (Hand) is questionable on Wednesday. The Angels will be relatively healthy coming into this contest.

The Dodgers are on fire recently, but they’re sending out a struggling Latos to pitch against the Angels on Wednesday. The righty was absolutely shelled in his most recent outing, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in just four innings of work against the Padres on Sep. 3. He has not gotten out of the fourth inning in four straight starts and is in serious danger of losing his spot in the rotation. Latos, did, however pitch very well the last time he faced the Angels. He was on the mound against them Aug. 2 and allowed just one earned run in six innings. He’ll need to find some of that same success on Wednesday.

Offensively, 1B Adrian Gonzalez (.277, 26 HR, 82 RBI) has been inconsistent this season and has just three hits in the past seven games. The Dodgers need him to be more productive and it’s not looking good, as he is 0-for-5 against Richards in his career. One guy who could possibly provide a spark for this team is 2B Chase Utley (.224 7 HR, 34 RBI). Utley is 2-for-3 with two doubles against Richards, but it is not a definite that he will be in the lineup on Wednesday. SS Corey Seager (.381, 0 HR, 4 RBI) has been a pleasant surprise since being called up to the show. He had two hits and an RBI on Tuesday and will continue to see time all over the infield in the next couple of weeks.

Garrett Richards will be taking the mound for the Angels on Wednesday and he has produced five quality starts in his past six appearances for the team. Richards has not faced the Dodgers since Aug. 4, 2014, but he did throw a complete game shutout in that appearance. He struck out nine batters in that one and gave up just five hits. This Angels lineup has a golden opportunity to put up some runs, facing a pitcher that is really lacking in confidence right now. One guy that is a serious threat to drive in runs is OF Kole Calhoun (.269, 23 HR, 72 RBI), who is sizzling hot as of late. Calhoun is on a seven-game hitting streak and he is 13-for-32 with three homers and five RBI in that stretch.

The Angels will, however, need more production out of 1B Albert Pujols (.248, 35 HR, 82 RBI) and OF Mike Trout (.293, 34 HR, 76 RBI). Pujols is 3-for-15 over the past five contests and Trout has just three RBIs in the past 10. The two of them are a combined 4-for-17 against Latos and must snap out of it and come through for their team on Wednesday.

Nationals Escobar, Taylor, Zimmerman sidelined with injuries

                    September 9, 2015

WASHINGTON (AP) Injuries have sidelined Nationals players Yunel Escobar, Michael Taylor and Ryan Zimmerman for their series finale Wednesday against the New York Mets.

Washington manager Matt Williams says third baseman Escobar ''spiked a fever of 103 last night.''

Center fielder Taylor has been dealing with a swollen right knee, which will keep him out of the starting lineup again. Williams says the knee is structurally fine, but Taylor is having mobility issues.

First baseman Zimmerman will miss a second straight game because of sore abdominal muscles.

Game of the Day: Orioles at Yankees

Baltimore Orioles at New York Yankees (-138, 8.5)

With a four-game showdown looming against American East-leading Toronto, the New York Yankees are dealing with an injury list that seemingly grows longer by the day. The Yankees trail the Blue Jays by 1 1/2 games and will try to prevent the deficit from getting larger when they host the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday in the rubber match of a three-game series.

New York designated hitter Alex Rodriguez continues to reach some lofty career milestones after going deep for the third straight game Tuesday, tying Hank Aaron for the most career 30-homer seasons with 15 and passing Rickey Henderson for 22nd place on the all-time hit list with 3,056. The Yankees were expected to go to a six-man rotation with CC Sabathia set to come off the 15-day disabled list to start Wednesday's game, but that was before they learned 14-game winner Nathan Eovaldi will be shut down for two weeks due to right elbow inflammation. Chris Davis has been one of the few bright spots for the slumping Orioles, belting a tiebreaking homer in the ninth inning Tuesday to give Baltimore only its fourth win in 19 games. It was the major league-leading 41st blast for Davis, who has six homers and 10 RBIs during his seven-game hitting streak.

LINE HISTORY: The Bronx Bombers opened as -125 home favorites and have been bet up to -138. The total has held steady at the openning number of 8.5.

                                INJURY REPORT:

Orioles - CF A. Jones (questionable Wednesday, shoulder), SP M. Gonzalez (15-day DL, undisclosed).

Yankees - LF B. Gardner (probable Wednesday, shoulder), SP N. Eovaldi (out indefinitely, elbow), 1B M. Teixeira (15-day DL, shin), LF D. Ackley (15-day DL, back).

                                WEATHER REPORT:

There is a very slight chance of thunderstorms at Yankee Stadium Wednesday to go along with a 16 percent chance of rain. There will also be an eight mile per hour wind blowing out to left field.

                                UMPIRE REPORT:

Paul Emmel will be the man calling balls and strikes for tonight's matchup. Home team's are 15-11 in Emmel's 26 games behind home plate, while the O/U is 14-12.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Ubaldo Jimenez (10-9, 4.24 ERA) vs. Yankees LH CC Sabathia (4-9, 5.27)

Jimenez overcame six walks last time out to earn the victory in Toronto, limiting the Blue Jays to two runs (one earned) and four hits over 5 2/3 innings. That ended a four-start winless drought for Jimenez, who permitted 18 runs in that span and has failed to get through six innings in five consecutive outings. He was hammered for seven runs in 2 1/3 innings at Yankee Stadium on July 23 to drop to 3-5 with a 6.60 ERA versus New York.

Sabathia, who has not won in two months, will be making his first start since Aug. 23, when knee pain forced him to exit a game against Cleveland in the third inning. Even though his last victory came on July 8, the 35-year-old Sabathia is 0-1 with six no-decisions over his last seven turns. He gave up four runs in each of his two starts versus the Orioles this season, but sports an 18-7 record and 3.48 ERA in 32 starts against them.

                                TRENDS:

                                * Yankees are 7-1 in Sabathia's last eight home starts versus the Orioles.
                                * Under is 4-1 in Sabathia's last six home starts versus the Orioles.
                                * Orioles are 1-5 in the last six meetings.
                                * Over is 4-0 in Jiminez's last four starts versus the AL East.

                                COVERS CONSENSUS:

The Yankees are the popular here, with 71.47 percent of wagers backing the New York at -138.
