    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- 10 of the 14 SEC teams are in the college football top 25.

-- Nolan Arenado leads the NL in road home runs, with 19, so his numbers are not just a product of playing 81 games at Coors Field.

-- Penn State alum Ross Travis made the KC Chiefs practice squad as a tight end, impressive because Travis played basketball at Penn State.

-- Oregon is an underdog this week for the first time in their last 46 games.

-- Virginia Tech QB Michael Brewer broke his collarbone, is out 4-8 weeks.

-- Bryce Harper is 0-20 in his career against Matt Harvey of the Mets.

    **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Hump Day Happenings.........

    13) Mets 8, Nationals 7-- Washington led 7-1, with man on first and two out in top of 7th; then their bullpen imploded and their season ended, for all intents/purposes. In one of the worst losses I've ever seen a team stumble thru, here is how the rest of the top of the 7th inning went for the Mets:

walk-single-walk-walk-double-walk-walk-walk-line out to right. 6 runs, 3 hits.

Wonder who Washington will hire as manager after they fire Matt Williams?

    12) Mets are off the hook (for now) on the Matt Harvey/innings fiasco, since they've basically clinched the division, so they can get by without Harvey for a while.

    11) Tennessee got hammered 34-10 at Oklahoma LY, but that was before Joshua Dobbs became the Vols' QB-- they were so much better after he took over under center. Looking forward to watching the rematch Saturday from Knoxville.

    10) In Ohio State's next nine games, they will be favored by 21+ points in all nine; their next three games are Hawai'i-Northern Illinois-Western Michigan. Biggest enemy Urban Meyer might have until Halloween is boredom.

    9) Interesting that ESPN openly talks about pointspreads/gambling now. When TV ratings go in the dumper, rules go out the window. Some college administrators aren't happy about this, but the college bean counters can't be too upset.

    8) Looks like Kam Chancellor is out for this week; Seattle's defense will be without one of its leaders. Maybe wishful thinking on my part because they're playing the Rams, but leaders win road games for teams. We'll see what happens Sunday.

    7) Last episode of HBO's Hard Knocks is always a very good one, with last cuts an emotional time for all involved; interesting that the last three players cut by Houston all signed with other teams, so either the Texans have a very deep roster or they cut the wrong guys. Coach Bill O'Brien was by far the star of this summer's shows.

    6) Did you see the two high school football players take a cheap shot at the official last week in Texas? Do these kids realize football games are taped? No idea what the official said to the kids, but they'll be lucky to get out without criminal charges.

    5) ACC's payoff for letting Notre Dame play basketball in their league (and getting a piece of the ACC $$$ bonanza from the NCAAs/TV) is that the Irish have to play six football games a year against ACC teams. They're at Virginia this week, go to Clemson later on. Showtime has a Hard Knocks-type program on Notre Dame football this fall, but doubt you'll see many controversial things there.

    4) Want to win a bar bet? Rookie outfielder Michael Conforto was 1,000th player in Mets history. Oregon State rookie looks like a keeper, too.

    3) Pay the man already!!!! Yoenis Cespedes has 34 RBI in 35 games with the Mets.

    2) NBA changed its playoff format; division winners are no longer guaranteed a top four seed, which is a good thing.

    1) RIP Joaquin Andujar, who passed away this week at age 62 from side effects of diabetes. Andujar was 127-118 in his 13-year career, winning 41 games for St Louis is the 1984-85 seasons. He made four All-Star teams in 13 years.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

      Letdown spot

Lost in the big-name upsets in Week 1 of the college football schedule was Florida International’s 15-14 stunner over state rival Central Florida as a two-touchdown road underdog Thursday. The Golden Panthers got a blocked field goal from Treyvon Williams to hold off the Knights with 30 seconds remaining in the game, picking up a win in their season opener for the first time in four years.

That upset has FIU on letdown watch in Week 2, once again playing on the road but having to hit the highway for a long trek to Bloomington to face the Indiana Hoosiers. Oddsmakers opened the Golden Panthers as 7.5-point underdogs, playing a Hoosiers program that got a big scare from FCS Southern Illinois in Week 1. Indiana is already vowing to improve and FIU may be punching bag for their Big Ten opponents this Saturday.

      Lookahead spot

The Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees are giving baseball fans a race to remember in the American League East, with Toronto holding a half game lead over the Pinstripes as of Tuesday. The Blue Jays are in Fenway taking on the Red Sox, who have relished the role of spoiler since their season went down the tubes. Boston won the series opener 11-4 Monday.

The Blue Jays could get caught looking ahead to a crucial series in the Bronx starting Thursday when they wrap up a three-game set with the BoSox Wednesday night. Toronto goes with Drew Hutchison for Wednesday’s game, saving the top starters for the Yankees. Hutchinson has been horrific on the road with a 9.00 ERA in 11 starts away from the Rogers Centre this season.

      Schedule spot

The CFL’s Labor Day Classic pitted rivals Hamilton and Toronto against each other Monday, with the T-Cats smashing the Argos 42-12. Toronto doesn’t have to wait long to get revenge for that one-sided beating, with only four days off before facing Hamilton at home Friday night. That’s not a lot of time to lick wounds and make adjustments for the shell-shocked Argonauts.

The Ti-Cats held a 27-1 halftime lead Monday and took over first place in the East Division with the victory. Hamilton is crushing teams with its last four victories coming by 30, 30, 29 and 30 points and improved to 8-2 ATS with the Labor Day Classic win. The Ti-Cats should have plenty of momentum with the CFL schedule not giving them any time to cool off.

NL East opponents teeing off vs. Phils' Buchanan

Philadelphia Phillies starter David Buchanan has hated facing NL East competition lately, and for good reason.

In Buchanan's last 10 starts versus the division, the Phils are an ugly 1-9. He's the probable starter Wednesday opposite Julio Teheran and division foe Atlanta.

The Phils are currently in the +115 ballpark at books.

Cubs hate seeing this ump behind the plate

The Chicago Cubs are a paltry 2-10 in their last 12 games with Vic Carapazza behind home plate, which is a bad sign for Cubs backers ahead of their clash with the St. Louis Cardinals Wednesday.

Carapazza is set to call balls and strikes for the tilt. Jon Lester and Carlos Martinez are slated to get the ball for the Cubbies and Cards, respectively.

As of this writing, the Cubs were +115 on the moneyline at sportsbooks.

MLB roundup: Mets rally past Nationals

WASHINGTON -- Pinch hitter Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a solo homer with two outs in the eighth off Jonathan Papelbon as the first-place New York Mets came back from a six-run deficit to stun the Washington Nationals 8-7 Tuesday.

The Mets extended their lead to six games over the Nationals in the National League East as they beat Washington for the fifth time in a row.

It was the first career pinch-hit homer for Nieuwenhuis, who was 2-for-18 as a pinch hitter this year before parking a pitch from Papelbon into the right field seats.

The homer capped an improbable comeback, as the Mets scored six runs in the seventh to tie the game at 7-7.

              Orioles 2, Yankees 1

NEW YORK -- Chris Davis led off the top of the ninth inning with his 41st home run, lifting Baltimore to a victory over New York.

Until Davis homered, the Orioles mustered only a solo home run by Ryan Flaherty in the sixth while striking out 10 times in eight innings off Masahiro Tanaka.

Baltimore finally broke through three pitches into the ninth off Chasen Shreve (6-2) when Davis drove a 2-0 fastball into the left field seats.

Blue Jays 5, Red Sox 1 (10 innings)

BOSTON -- Josh Donaldson led off the 10th with a triple, and he scored on Troy Tulowitzki's single to key a four-run inning that gave Toronto a win over Boston.

The victory, coupled with the Yankees' loss, increased the Jays' lead in the AL East to a game and a half. The Red Sox saw their four-game winning streak end.

Travis Shaw's second-inning homer accounted for Boston's only run in six innings against Jays knuckleballer R.A. Dickey.

              Pirates 7, Reds 3

CINCINNATI -- Andrew McCutchen hit a three-run home run and Francisco Liriano allowed only three hits in six shutout innings, lifting Pittsburgh past Cincinnati.

Liriano (10-7) finished with one walk and 10 strikeouts. He also went 2-for-3, including a double.

Jung Ho Kang hit a solo homer and Starling Marte went 3-for-5 with a double for the Pirates.

              Royals 4, Twins 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Edinson Volquez pitched seven resolute innings and Eric Hosmer smacked a three-run double in the first as Kansas City beat Minnesota.

The Royals snapped a four-game losing skid, which matched their longest of the season.

Volquez (13-7) gave the Royals their first quality start in six starts. He limited the Twins to six hits and two runs, walked none and struck out three while throwing 62 strikes in 91 pitches.

              Phillies 5, Braves 0

PHILADELPHIA -- In a battle of rookies, Aaron Nola outdueled Ryan Weber, lifting Philadelphia past Atlanta.

Nola threw seven shutout innings and recorded a career-high seven strikeouts, helping the Phillies snap a five-game losing streak. Weber gave up two runs in six innings during his major league debut.

              Philadelphia's Odubel Herrera went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer.

              Marlins 6, Brewers 4

MIAMI -- Rookie J.T. Realmuto hit two solo homers -- including one inside the park -- to lead Miami past Milwaukee.

The Brewers loaded the bases in three consecutive innings -- the third through the fifth -- but could not score in any of those frames. In total, the Brewers stranded 14 runners.

Realmuto, who has nine homers, tied the score 2-2 in the second inning with a traditional shot over the left field fence. He added an inside-the-park homer in the fourth.

              Cubs 8, Cardinals 5

ST. LOUIS -- Starlin Castro and Anthony Rizzo combined for seven RBIs, leading Chicago to a win over St. Louis.

Castro went 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring three runs and driving in four, while Rizzo collected a pair of hits and knocked in three runs as the Cubs won their fifth consecutive game.

Castro's RBI double and Rizzo's run-scoring single gave Chicago an 8-0 cushion in the seventh, runs that proved to be vital when the Cardinals rallied against starter Jason Hammel (8-6) and reliever Justin Grimm for all of their runs in their half of the inning.

              White Sox 7, Indians 4

CHICAGO -- Carlos Rodon pitched seven innings of one-run ball, leading Chicago to a win over Cleveland.

Rodon allowed five hits and a walk. He struck out eight and held the opposing team to no more than two runs for the sixth consecutive outing.

Catcher Rob Brantly hit a three-run home run in the second inning and first baseman Jose Abreu went 3-for-4 with his 26th home run to lead Chicago, which won for the fifth time in six games.

              Tigers 8, Rays 7 (13 innings)

DETROIT -- Rajai Davis' one-out sacrifice fly brought home James McCann with the winning run as Detroit edged Tampa Bay in the 13th inning.

McCann reached on a leadoff single and advanced on two sacrifices before Davis knocked him in to end the 5-hour, 3-minute marathon. The left fielder also hit his third home run in the past two games during the third inning, while J.D. Martinez added his 36th homer.

Third baseman Andrew Romine drove in two runs, and Kyle Ryan (2-3) got the victory with 1 1/3 of scoreless relief.

              Dodgers 6, Angels 4

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Corey Seager's RBI double in the sixth inning ignited a four-run rally that led the Los Angeles Dodgers to a win over the Los Angeles Angels.

The Dodgers recorded their eighth victory in a row over the Angels.

Seager, a 21-year-old shortstop had two hits to continue his fast start in the majors since his call-up on Sept. 3. He is hitting .381 in his first six games, though he committed his first two big league errors Tuesday.

              Giants 6, Diamondbacks 2

PHOENIX -- Gregor Blanco and Tim Hudson hit back-to-back homers in a five-run third inning, and Hudson won his first start since returning from the disabled list as San Francisco beat Arizona.

Blanco and Hudson homered four pitches apart off right-hander Chase Anderson, and Hudson gave only one run and four singles in six innings in his first start since July 26.

Joe Panik doubled in a run in the third inning and hit a bases-empty homer in the ninth as the Giants won for the third time in four games after losing seven in a row.

              A's 4, Astros 0

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Sonny Gray threw seven shutout innings, outdueling former teammate Scott Kazmir and leading Oakland to a victory over Houston.

Gray (13-7) gave up five hits and snapped his season-high three-game losing streak. He struck out four, walked two and threw 101 pitches.

Oakland's Mark Canha hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning, and Billy Burns hit a solo homer in the third. That accounted for the four runs Kazmir gave up in six innings.

              Padres 2, Rockies 1

SAN DIEGO -- Pinch hitter Brett Wallace's fielder choice in the bottom of the ninth lifted San Diego past Colorado.

Corey Spangenberg opened the ninth with an opposite-field double. He advanced to third on Clint Barmes' sacrifice bunt. With the infield playing in, Wallace hit a hard grounder to shortstop, but Jose Reyes' relay to catcher Dustin Garneau was late to get a sliding Spangenberg.

The win snapped a four-game skid for the Padres, who held the Rockies to three hits.

              Rangers 9, Mariners 6

SEATTLE -- Cole Hamels survived both a line drive to the jaw and a shaky seventh inning while pitching the Texas Rangers to a 9-6 win over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.

The left-hander rebounded from a line drive off the left side of his face in the third inning and got plenty of offensive help from four Texas home runs. Shin-Soo Choo, Mitch Moreland, Rougned Odor and Joey Gallo all went deep for the Rangers.

Hamels (3-1) allowed four runs on eight hits in seven innings, with four of the hits and three of the runs coming in his final inning.

                    Wednesday, September 9

                    Mets are becoming road warriors

Being away from Citi Field doesn't bother the New York Mets, who have gone 10-2 in their last 12 road games, scoring a ridiculous 8.67 runs per game over that stretch.

With such a high run production it's no surprise the over is 9-3 in the Mets last 12 road games and is 19-5-1 in their last 22 road games.

The Mets visit the Washington Nationals Wednesday and send All-Star Jacob deGrom to the mound to take on the Nats Stephen Strasburgh.

The Mets are currently slight +106 underdogs with a total at 7.5.

Cubs just keep beating right-handed starters

The Chicago Cubs are now 24-5 in their last 29 games against right-handers after their 8-5 win over the Cardinals Michael Wacha Tuesday night.

The Cubs will try to keep the trend going when they go up against another Cardinals right-hander in Carlos Martinez.

Chicago is currently a +116 road dog and will counter with left Jon Lester.

Chance of showers at Busch Stadium

There is a 66 percent chance of rain showers for Wednesday's matinee between the Cubs and Cardinals at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

There will also be a six mile per hour wind blowing in from left field during the game.

The Cardinals and starter Carlos Martinez (3.04 ERA, 9-12 O/U) are currently -126 favorites going up against the Cubs Jon Lester (3.59 ERA, 9-16 O/U). The total sits at 7.0 runs.

Chance of thunderstorms at Nationals Park

It could get a little wet for Wednesday's series finale between the Mets and Nationals in Washington with a chance of thunderstorms and a 45 percent chance of rain in the forecast.

Temperatures will be in the mid 80s at gametime with a slight six mile per hour wind gusting out to left center field.

The Nationals, currently -115 home favorites, send Stephen Strasburg (4.35 ERA, 10-8 O/U)to take on the Mets Jacob deGrom (2.40 ERA, 13-12 O/U). The total sits at 7.5.

Brewers over streak hits eight games

The over in Milwaukee Brewers games is one of the hottest bets in baseball, going over the total in eight consecutive games after Milwaukee dropped a 6-4 decision to the Marlins Tuesday.

The Brewers offense, that had been averaging just 4.15 runs per game this season, has woken up to the tune of 6.5 runs per game during the over streak.

Bettors backing the streak are hoping the Brewers make it nine in a row when they visit the Miami Marlins Wednesday, with a total currently sitting at 8.0 runs.

Milwaukee sends Ariel Pena to the mound, while the Marlins counter with Tom Koehler.

Game of the Day: Orioles at Yankees
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alex Rodriguez has gone deep in the first two game of the Yankees series against Baltimore. Can he make it three-in-a-row Wednesday?

Baltimore Orioles at New York Yankees (-138, 8.5)

With a four-game showdown looming against American East-leading Toronto, the New York Yankees are dealing with an injury list that seemingly grows longer by the day. The Yankees trail the Blue Jays by 1 1/2 games and will try to prevent the deficit from getting larger when they host the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday in the rubber match of a three-game series.

New York designated hitter Alex Rodriguez continues to reach some lofty career milestones after going deep for the third straight game Tuesday, tying Hank Aaron for the most career 30-homer seasons with 15 and passing Rickey Henderson for 22nd place on the all-time hit list with 3,056. The Yankees were expected to go to a six-man rotation with CC Sabathia set to come off the 15-day disabled list to start Wednesday's game, but that was before they learned 14-game winner Nathan Eovaldi will be shut down for two weeks due to right elbow inflammation. Chris Davis has been one of the few bright spots for the slumping Orioles, belting a tiebreaking homer in the ninth inning Tuesday to give Baltimore only its fourth win in 19 games. It was the major league-leading 41st blast for Davis, who has six homers and 10 RBIs during his seven-game hitting streak.

                      LINE HISTORY:
The Bronx Bombers opened as -125 home favorites and have been bet up to -138. The total has held steady at the openning number of 8.5.

                      INJURY REPORT:

Orioles - CF A. Jones (questionable Wednesday, shoulder), SP M. Gonzalez (15-day DL, undisclosed).

Yankees - LF B. Gardner (probable Wednesday, shoulder), SP N. Eovaldi (out indefinitely, elbow), 1B M. Teixeira (15-day DL, shin), LF D. Ackley (15-day DL, back).

                      WEATHER REPORT:
There is a very slight chance of thunderstorms at Yankee Stadium Wednesday to go along with a 16 percent chance of rain. There will also be an eight mile per hour wind blowing out to left field.

                      UMPIRE REPORT:
Paul Emmel will be the man calling balls and strikes for tonight's matchup. Home team's are 15-11 in Emmel's 26 games behind home plate, while the O/U is 14-12.

                      PITCHING MATCHUP:
Orioles RH Ubaldo Jimenez (10-9, 4.24 ERA) vs. Yankees LH CC Sabathia (4-9, 5.27)

Jimenez overcame six walks last time out to earn the victory in Toronto, limiting the Blue Jays to two runs (one earned) and four hits over 5 2/3 innings. That ended a four-start winless drought for Jimenez, who permitted 18 runs in that span and has failed to get through six innings in five consecutive outings. He was hammered for seven runs in 2 1/3 innings at Yankee Stadium on July 23 to drop to 3-5 with a 6.60 ERA versus New York.

Sabathia, who has not won in two months, will be making his first start since Aug. 23, when knee pain forced him to exit a game against Cleveland in the third inning. Even though his last victory came on July 8, the 35-year-old Sabathia is 0-1 with six no-decisions over his last seven turns. He gave up four runs in each of his two starts versus the Orioles this season, but sports an 18-7 record and 3.48 ERA in 32 starts against them.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Yankees are 7-1 in Sabathia's last eight home starts versus the Orioles.
                      * Under is 4-1 in Sabathia's last six home starts versus the Orioles.
                      * Orioles are 1-5 in the last six meetings.
                      * Over is 4-0 in Jiminez's last four starts versus the AL East.

                      CONSENSUS:
The Yankees are the popular here, with 71.47 percent of wagers backing the New York at -138.
