Preview: Dodgers (79-58) at Angels (69-68)
    Game: 2
    Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
    Date: September 08, 2015 10:05 PM EDT

With his early-season struggles well behind him, red-hot Clayton Kershaw is playing a major role in helping the Los Angeles Dodgers pull away in the NL West.

As the ace tries to win his eighth straight decision, the Dodgers seek a 13th victory in 15 games Tuesday night when their series resumes against the Los Angeles Angels.

Since dropping three straight starts in June, Kershaw is 7-0 with a MLB-best 0.93 ERA over his last 11 outings. He leads the big leagues with 251 strikeouts after fanning 111 over 87 innings in that span.

The three-time NL Cy Young winner tossed a six-hitter and matched a career high with 15 strikeouts in Wednesday's 2-1 home win over San Francisco. Now he'll try to help the Dodgers (79-58) add to their 8 1/2-game division lead following Monday's 7-5 win.

With 29 strikeouts in his last two outings, Kershaw (12-6, 2.18 ERA) needs 13 to pass Sandy Koufax (1959) for the franchise's most in a three-start span since 1914. After fanning 39 over his past three, he'll pass Hideo Nomo's four-game mark ('95) with 12.

"When he puts up numbers like this, striking out 14, 15, it's what you expect him to do," catcher Yasmani Grandal told MLB's official website.

Kershaw has struck out seven in both his starts against the Angels since 2011. In his only meeting this season, he gave up two hits in eight scoreless of a 3-1 home win Aug. 1.

Albert Pujols has had success versus Kershaw with a .435 average in 23 career at-bats. Pujols went 3 for 5 with an RBI on Monday, while Kole Calhoun and C.J. Cron homered.

The Angels, though, have hit .193 and totaled 17 runs while dropping seven straight in the Freeway Series. Mike Trout his 3 for 25 with nine strikeouts in his last six meetings.

The Angels are 5 1/2 behind AL West-leading Houston and 3 1/2 out of a playoff spot.

They'll try to push some runs across for Andrew Heaney, who has worked his way into the AL Rookie of the Year discussion by allowing two runs or less in 10 of his 13 starts.

After giving up a career-high eight runs over 3 1-3 innings in a 15-3 home loss to Toronto on Aug. 22, Heaney (6-2, 3.18) has gone 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in his last two.

"I went ahead and looked at some of the stats of the other (Rookie of the Year candidates)," he said. "I don't put up amazing numbers, I don't punch out a lot of people, so I don't know."

The left-hander was traded from Miami to the Dodgers in December before getting dealt to the Angels (69-68) for Howie Kendrick just five hours later. In his only other start in the rivalry, he yielded two runs over 5 1-3 innings while opposing Kershaw last month.

Kendrick has been out the past month with a hamstring injury. Grandal is likely to be sidelined a few games with a sore left shoulder, while Jimmy Rollins is out because of a jammed finger.

Scott Van Slyke stepped up Monday with a career-high four hits and drove in four runs, while Joc Pederson matched a season high with three hits. Van Slyke had been hitting .167 over his previous 14 games and Pederson .111 in his prior 31.

Preview: Astros (75-63) at Athletics (59-79)
      Game: 2
      Venue: O.co Coliseum
      Date: September 08, 2015 10:05 PM EDT

Maintaining their AL West lead won't be the only thing at stake for the Houston Astros when their series resumes in Oakland.

Bragging rights are on the line Tuesday night as Scott Kazmir faces his former team and friend Sonny Gray for the first time since the A's traded him to Houston in July.

Kazmir and Gray developed a close bond during their season and a half in Oakland before the veteran was shipped out at the trade deadline. The 31-year-old served as a mentor for the 24-year-old Gray, who has emerged as a Cy Young candidate this season.

"It's just going to be fun," Kazmir said. "There's going to be a lot of trash talk through the whole deal."

While they each rank in the AL's top four in ERA, Kazmir (7-9, 2.50 ERA) and Gray (12-7, 2.36) are looking to bounce back from rare rocky performances.

Kazmir allowed three runs and seven hits over 4 1-3 innings Wednesday and did not factor into the decision in an 8-3 home loss to Seattle. The left-hander may be able to regroup at O.co Coliseum, where he went 12-6 with a 2.73 ERA in 26 starts over the past two seasons. He's 10-6 with a 4.01 ERA in 19 starts against the A's (59-79), but hasn't faced them since 2013.

Billy Butler has hit .344 over 32 career at-bats against Kazmir, while Coco Crisp is batting .306 with a home run, three doubles and 11 strikeouts in 36 at-bats.

Butler had a sixth-inning single Monday before Crisp delivered a two-run double to key last-place Oakland's series-opening 10-9 win that snapped a five-game skid. Crisp was a pinch-hitter for the third time in four games and has come through with a hit each time.

Houston (75-63), which had a 5 1/2-game division lead Aug. 26, had its advantage trimmed to two after its sixth loss in 11 games and Texas' win at Seattle.

The Astros may be catching Gray at an opportune time since he's 0-3 with a 4.32 ERA in his last four starts. He gave up a career high-tying six earned runs over five innings in Wednesday's 9-4 loss to the Los Angeles Angels, surrendering the AL's ERA lead to Houston's Dallas Keuchel.

"I felt fine," he told MLB's official website. "I didn't think all the pitches I made were that bad, but they put some good swings on the ball and had four runs before you knew it."

Gray is 1-1 with a 2.57 ERA in two starts versus Houston this season and 3-1 with a 1.74 mark in four career home meetings. He tossed a five-hitter in a 3-1 win Aug. 7.

Jose Altuve, who has gone 6 for 18 versus Gray, went hitless Monday to snap a 20-game hitting streak at the Coliseum that was tied for the third longest in the ballpark's history. Carlos Correa, Jonathan Villar and Jake Marisnick homered, while Mark Canha and Josh Phegley went deep for the A's.

Marisnick is 5 for 7 with three home runs and seven RBIs over five games this month, while former A's infielder Jed Lowrie is batting .478 with three homers and seven RBIs in his last seven.

Oakland's Stephen Vogt isn't likely to play after being hit by a foul tip in the groin Sunday.

Preview: Rangers (72-64) at Mariners (66-72)
        Game: 2
        Venue: Safeco Field
        Date: September 08, 2015 10:10 PM EDT

Cole Hamels' 13 postseason starts and 2008 World Series MVP are proof that he has big-game experience, and the Texas Rangers have benefited from it during their playoff push.

The club's current rotation would cause Hamels to miss crucial series against contenders down the stretch, but as far as manager Jeff Banister is concerned, no game is more important than any other at this stage.

Hamels looks to stay hot when the visiting Rangers face the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.

Texas (72-64) has gone 25-12 since July 29, two days before it acquired Hamels (2-1, 3.89 ERA) from Philadelphia. The surge has put the Rangers 1 1/2 games ahead of Minnesota for the AL's second wild card and helped trim their deficit behind Houston in the West from eight to two.

Hamels has gone 2-0 with a 2.89 ERA over his last four starts after he struck out eight in seven innings of Texas' 4-3, 10-inning win at San Diego on Wednesday. His only loss in six starts with Texas came Aug. 7 against Seattle, when he surrendered homers to Nelson Cruz, Robinson Cano and Mark Trumbo in a 4-3 loss.

The left-hander began his unbeaten stretch 10 days later by going seven innings in the Rangers' 4-3 win over the Mariners. As it currently stands, Hamels wouldn't pitch in a four-game home series against the Astros that begins Monday, nor would he be slated to start at Houston from Sept. 25-27.

Banister said he doesn't have plans to alter the rotation in order to get Hamels a start in either of those series.

"Obviously, we have looked at some options, but right now, we're looking at the rotation that gives us the best options with the games right in front of us," Banister told MLB's official website. "We have to win the games in front of us."

The Rangers have done that more often that not lately and beat the Mariners 3-0 in Monday's opener of this four-game set. Adrian Beltre had a two-run single in the sixth before Rougned Odor scored on a wild pitch in the seventh.

Seattle (66-72) had a season-high five-game winning streak snapped while getting shut out for the first time since July 4 at Oakland. Cano had two hits and is batting .417 during a nine-game hitting streak at home.

The Mariners struggled for the first time without Cruz, who missed his fifth straight game with a strained right quad. They scored 30 runs in the previous four and averaged 7.4 during their winning streak.

There's a chance Cruz returns to the lineup as the designated hitter in this contest.

Taijuan Walker (10-7, 4.51) has gone 3-0 with a 3.26 ERA over his last seven starts, a stretch that began with a one-hitter against Minnesota on July 31. He pitched 6 2/3 innings of Wednesday's 8-3 win over Houston and didn't appear to have any issues after leaving his previous outing Aug. 28 in the seventh inning with a cramp in his right hip.

The right-hander gave up an unearned run in seven innings of a 3-1 win over Texas on April 27, but allowed three runs in Seattle's loss Aug. 17 when he opposed Hamels.

Walker likely won't have to face Delino DeShields, who suffered a mild left knee sprain Monday and is expected to sit out at least this contest.

Preview: Rockies (57-80) at Padres (65-73)
          Game: 2
          Venue: PETCO Park
          Date: September 08, 2015 10:10 PM EDT

Tracking down the San Diego Padres for fourth place in the NL West is unlikely for the Colorado Rockies, but they probably won't have to continue trying without a key slugger after an injury scare.

Nolan Arenado was removed from the series opener with a chest contusion, though the third baseman is confident he'll be back in the lineup for Tuesday night's follow-up at Petco Park.

After Colorado's 3-2 win Monday, the teams have six games remaining and San Diego (65-73) holds a 7 1/2-game advantage with nine wins in 13 meetings this season. It was the Rockies' second win in 10 tries at Petco, and it nearly came at a cost.

Arenado, who is tied with teammate Carlos Gonzalez with an NL-leading 36 home runs, was removed in the eighth inning after landing in the crowd when trying to make a play on a foul ball.

"I will be OK," he said. "I got an X-ray and everything looked good. I expect to be in the lineup tomorrow."

Gonzalez and Arenado are each one home run shy of matching Jeromy Burnitz's 2004 total for the highest since the Coors Field humidor was installed in 2002. Prior to that, at least one Colorado player hit 40 or more home runs in six of the club's first nine seasons.

In addition to climbing a game closer to San Diego, Colorado (57-80) can get a step closer to its first series win against a division opponent since taking two of three at home from Arizona from June 23-25. The Rockies haven't won a road series in the West since sweeping San Francisco in three April 13-15.

Jon Gray is six starts into his career and still seeking his first decision. Gray (0-0, 6.15 ERA) was impressive through his first three with a 2.40 ERA, but he's since posted an 11.12 mark with a .472 opponent batting average while lasting 11 1-3 innings.

He gave up four runs and a season-high 10 hits in 5 1-3 innings of Wednesday's 9-4 home win over Arizona, though he's still taking positives.

"It's been three weeks of straight battling," Gray told MLB's official website. "I think it's easier every time to deal with that, so I think mental toughness is really what you're getting out of those type of games."

The right-hander will at least get a break from Coors Field, where he's posted a 7.88 ERA and .391 OBA in four starts as opposed to 3.48 and .211 marks in two on the road. His one respectable home start came in a 7-5 loss to San Diego on Aug. 15 while allowing a run and four hits in five innings.

Similar numbers against fellow rookie Colin Rea (2-2, 5.47) could finally get him in the win column. Rea won his first two starts and is 0-2 in three since, but his numbers have stayed more level than Gray's.

The right-hander is yet to make it through six innings, but he was removed after giving up two runs in five of Thursday's 10-7 home win over Los Angeles because he took a liner off his pitching shoulder.

"I thought he was very poised for a start against the Dodgers," interim manager Pat Murphy said. "I think he showed me something. In all his outings this was his best one in my opinion."

Getting Rea another win could require a return to that level of offense. Since that game, the Padres have lost four straight with nine runs and a .190 average.

Matt Kemp has driven in four of those runs and has 31 RBIs in his last 22 games.

Gausman, Orioles tend to struggle as underdogs

Bettors who have backed the Baltimore Orioles at plus money when Kevin Gausman has gotten the ball haven't been getting any results lately.

The O's are winless in Gausman's last five starts when tabbed as underdogs. Sportsbooks are presently offering Baltimore in the +152 ballpark for Monday's tilt with the New York Yankees.

The Bronx Bombers are slated to counter with ace Masahiro Tanaka.

Overs cashing when Nola gets the ball

Over bettors have been loving Aaron Nola of the Philadelphia Phillies due to his penchant of participating in a lot of high-scoring affairs.

In Nola's last eight outings, the Over has gone 6-1-1. The 22-year-old is slated to get the ball Monday against the Atlanta Braves.

The line and total for the NL East contest had not yet hit the board at sportsbooks at the time of writing.

                Giants 2B Panik returns

It may be too late to save the sinking San Francisco Giants, but Giants second baseman Joe Panik was activated Monday after missing more than a month with a back injury.

Panik, 24, was named to the All-Star squad this year, and is hitting .309 with seven homers as well as playing excellent defense.

Panik's last game before going on the disabled list was Aug. 1, at which point the Giants were 57-46 and 1 1/2 games out of first place in the National League West. In Panik's absence the Giants went 14-20 and entered Monday's action 7 1/2 games out of first.

Rookie Kelby Tomlinson was the primary replacement at second base in Panik's absence and he hit .306 in the 30 games he played.

Kazmir to face A's for first time since trade to Houston

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Left-hander Scott Kazmir will face the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday on the O.co Coliseum for the first time since they traded him to the Houston Astros on July 23 for a pair of prospects.

Kazmir will face A's ace Sonny Gray, his close friend and a player he mentored for much of his time with the A's.

Orioles CF Jones still bothered by sore shoulder

NEW YORK -- For Adam Jones, there is an alternative to missing a game with a sore right shoulder and it is not something he has any desire to do.

Jones missed the final inning of Monday's 8-6 loss in New York with a sore right shoulder and is hopeful of playing Tuesday.

"If I don't play, I just sit here, eat ice cream and bother Buck," Jones said. "So probably try to get some rest tonight and hopefully it responds and feels better tomorrow."

Jones appeared to grimace after striking out in the seventh. After the top of the eighth, manager Buck Showalter lifted him, citing a throw to first base Jones made as a cause of the injury that initially cost him eight games in Junes.

Athletics C Vogt out with groin injury

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Oakland catcher Stephen Vogt was out of lineup Monday against Houston, one day after being hit in the groin by a foul ball against Seattle and going to the hospital.

"Based on the ultrasound yesterday, nothing is ruptured or fractured," A's manager Bob Melvin said before a 10-9 victory against Houston. "There was a lot of swelling so they're going to do another one today to make sure, but he's resting as comfortably as you could rest at this point.

"He won't be here today and we'll have a better idea in the next coming days when he would be available again."

Concussion might end season for Phillies' Brown

PHILADELPHIA -- Two years ago, Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Domonic Brown was a National League All-Star.

Now he faces an uncertain future.

Brown, hitting just .228 with five homers and 25 RBIs in 63 games this year, sustained a concussion last Wednesday, likely ending his season and possibly his six-year tenure with the Phillies.

Interim manager Pete Mackanin said Monday before the Phillies lost 7-2 to the Atlanta Braves that Brown was still feeling the effects of his injury.

"I'd be surprised if he even came back the rest of the year," Mackanin added.

Brown, 28, hit .272 with 27 homers and 83 RBIs in 2013, but he slipped to .232 with 10 homers and 63 RBIs in 144 games last season.

                            Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

I've gotten interested in bobbleheads; here are prices on some of the unique ones you can find on the Interweb:

-- Mr Met remains a popular collectible, especially in a winning year-- $55.59.

-- Kobe Bryant, with MVP trophies/championship trophies-- $215

-- Tim Duncan with his MVP trophies/championship trophies-- $89.99

-- Sausage racers in Milwaukee comes as a set of six-- $239.99

-- TNT's Craig Sager has his own bobblehead-- $99.99.

-- For some reason, Rocky the Denver Nuggets' mascot, is also $99.99.

                            **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

                            13) Pirates played on ESPN Sunday night in St Louis, then had a 1:00 game Monday in Cincinnati; what genius thought this was a good idea? Pittsburgh lost seven of its last eight games; still looks like they'll play the Cubs in the Wild Card game.

                            12) Ohio State 42, Virginia Tech 24-- Buckeyes are loaded, with two backup QBs who would start at most colleges. If Cardale Jones had entered NFL Draft last April, he might be starting this Sunday in a pro game, instead of for the Buckeyes, and he has only started four college games, none in Columbus.

                            11) If I owned a major league baseball team, all of my coaches would be bilingual; communication is too important to have players who can't communicate with coaches.

                            10) SEC championship football game will stay in Atlanta thru 2027; Falcons open a new stadium in 2018- the game will move there when that replaces the Georgia Dome.

                            9) 15 of the Astros' last 24 games are on the road. Should be an interesting last four weeks for a team that doesn't play well away from home.

                            8) Baseball record that I've never heard of before yesterday: Earl Webb once hit 67 doubles in 1931 and no one has ever hit more. Closest anyone has come recently was when Todd Helton hit 59 doubles for the Rockies.

                            7) Minor league baseball is profitable: Quad City River Bandits, a Class A farm club of the Astros, averaged 3,907 fans per game this year. Minor league teams are profit makers because they don't pay player salaries.

When you get 3,907 people a game in Davenport, Iowa and have an outfield fence covered with advertising signs, you make a decent buck.

                            6) Cleveland Browns suspended their offensive line coach after he got suspended for a DUI (not his first). Browns are 1-15 in season openers, visit the Jets Sunday.

                            5) Reggie Wayne only lasted 12 days with the Patriots, but don't feel bad for him; he banked $450K for those 12 miserable days in New England.

                            4) ESPN the Magazine interviewed 98 college football players; 58% of them think the college football playoff should be eight teams, not four.

                            3) Three of the eleven guys on Virginia Tech's kick coverage team are brothers.

                            2) Was watching the underrated movie Leap of Faith (Steve Martin, Debra Winger) and saw that the price of gas back then (movie was made in 1992) was $1.24 a gallon. If you stumble across this movie on cable, it is worth a watch; Liam Neeson before he hit it big, Meat Loaf as a musician. This was one of Steve Martin's best roles.

                            1) Today is the day the Kam Chancellor/Seahawks stalemate takes a turn; either one side caves in, or one of Seattle's team leaders is out for Sunday's game with NFC West rival St Louis. Nate Burleson was saying on TV yesterday how Chancellor's impact on the Seahawks cannot be understated, so his absence would be a problem.

The one consistent things about Washington has been the 'under', which has hit in five of the past six and eight of the past 10.

-- The season cannot end soon enough for San Antonio (7-25), which had another losing week. That includes a 30-point loss at the hands of Phoenix (19-10). Over the past eight games the Stars are a dismal 1-7 ATS, while 'under' has hit in six of those eight outings.

-- Speaking of the Mercury, they were perfect in the past week while going 2-0 ATS. The 'under has also hit in four straight for the Merc, and 9-3 in their past 12 games.

-- Indiana (18-10) split their games this week, winning at home against Connecticut while losing on the road in Minnesota. The Fever have had a great season under rookie head coach Stephanie White, as they're heading to the playoffs for an 11th straight season. However, the Fever is just 1-5 ATS over the past six outings.

Preview: Fever (18-13) at Mystics (16-15)

                                Date: September 08, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The Washington Mystics' magic number is one with three games remaining.

While a third consecutive playoff berth seems like a lock, it's hardly a guarantee with the way they've been playing.

The Mystics try to avoid a fifth straight defeat and gain some ground on the third-place Indiana Fever on Tuesday night at the Verizon Center.

Washington (16-15) looked like a sure bet to make the playoffs after a 79-61 win at Western Conference-leading Minnesota on Aug. 19. That moved it within two games of first place in the East, but it's since lost six of seven.

The Mystics have a three-game lead over Atlanta and could have eliminated the Dream from playoff contention Sunday but suffered a 73-67 defeat at Philips Arena. Washington and Atlanta conclude the season Sunday at the Verizon Center.

Even if the Mystics fail to win another game, they'll still be back into the playoffs if the Dream lose one of their remaining three.

Washington is 10-5 at home but has lost four of the last five regular-season meetings with Indiana in the nation's capital. In the last one Aug. 11, Tamika Catchings scored 10 of her 20 points in the fourth quarter to lead Indiana to a 73-62 victory.

Although the Fever (18-13) are headed to the playoffs for a WNBA-record 11th consecutive season, their seeding is far from set. They're two games ahead of the Mystics as they try to avoid an opening-round series against East-leading New York and trail second-place Chicago by 1 1/2 games for home-court advantage in the first round.

Like Washington, Indiana also hasn't looked much like a playoff team lately, having dropped four of five. The Fever went 3 of 12 from 3-point range and were outscored 40-28 in the paint in Friday's 81-65 loss at Minnesota.

Shenise Johnson, Indiana's second-leading scorer at 11.2 points per game, had four in 21 minutes and is averaging 6.0 points in her last three contests.

The Mystics haven't been getting much offensive production from Stefanie Dolson, who also averages 11.2 points. The 6-foot-5 Dolson, eighth in the league in shooting at 50.0 percent, is averaging 6.5 points and 34.3 percent shooting in her past four games.

She was limited to six points in last month's meeting with Indiana while center Emma Meesseman, second on Washington with 11.8 points, went scoreless in 17 minutes.
