    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Six of the more interesting games on next weekend's college football slate:

-- Temple +8 at Cincinnati-- Owls sacked Christian Hackenberg ten times; their defense is for real, they're a live underdog.

-- LSU -2 at Mississippi State-- Bulldogs won in Baton Rouge LY. Tigers didn't get to play (lightning) much Saturday-- they could be rusty.

-- Iowa -6 at Iowa State-- Underdogs are 10-4 vs spread in last 14 series games. Iowa lost five of last eight visits to Ames. This is a legit rivalry game.

-- Oklahoma -1 at Tennessee-- Vols (+20) lost 34-10 in Norman last year.

-- Oregon +2 at Michigan State-- Spartans (+13) lost 46-27 in Eugene LY.

-- Washington State +5.5 at Rutgers-- Scarlet Knights (+8) won SU in Pullman LY. Big game for Coogs after losing to I-AA Portland State Saturday.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend......

    13) Enough already with Draft Kings and Fan Duel commercials; doesn't anyone in this country drink anymore? What happened to beer commercials?

Seriously, I'm getting bludgeoned with fantasy football commercials- they're advertising more than the fast food places. As I'm typing this, another one just came on TV.

    12) Eagles signed former Miami QB Stephen Morris, who Jacksonville let go; they cut Tim Tebow and needed an emergency QB.

    11) McNeese State's game at LSU got cancelled after only 5:00 because of lightning; the Cowboys cleaned up-- they still got the $500K check and they didn't get a loss on their record. LSU could've used a dress rehearsal since they're going to Starkville this week to play SEC rival Mississippi State. .

    10) There are 13 NFL teams with no fullbacks on their roster.

    9) Interesting story on theMMQB.com about the Ravens; Marc Trestman is their fourth OC the last four years, but instead of making the whole offense learn another new system, Trestman kept Gary Kubiak's system from last year and learned that one himself, figuring it would be easier for one person to learn a new system than 25 or 30.

    8) I'm surprised there was only one college football game Sunday; guess they were deferring to NASCAR and baseball last night. If you had Purdue +7, two pick-6's by Marshall handed you a very bad early season beat.

    7) Former Notre Dame QB Everett Golson was 19-25 for 302 yards, four TDs in his first game for Florida State Saturday.

    6) Texas Tech 59, Sam Houston 45-- When a I-AA team runs for 351 yards and the majority of your schedule is Big X teams, Tech's defense could be in for a long year.

    5) ESPN's guys at the Alabama game Saturday said the Crimson Tide defense was on the field for 170 more plays last year than in 2013 and it caused them to wear down late last season. Might be interesting to track this season.

    4) Speaking of Alabama, rumors of Nick Saban going to the Colts next year won't go away, which could be why Chuck Pagano is being left to twist in the wind. But what happens if Indy wins the Super Bowl?

    3) Ole Miss 76, UT-Martin 3-- Hope the parties in The Grove were good, because the game 38,677 fans paid to see was horrendous. ESPNU actually replayed this debacle Sunday morning. Why? Who would want to watch it again?

    2) Atlanta Braves' 12-game losing streak is their worst since 1977; when owner Ted Turned stepped in and managed the team for a game, before the commissioner put a stop to that, since Turner didn't know much about baseball. Five years later Atlanta was in the playoffs, with Joe Torre as their manager.

    1) Sign of the times: Alabama's kicker is from Poland, Wisconsin's from Brazil.

Nationals have had Niese's number recently

If one team has owned New York Mets starter Jon Niese lately it's the Washington Nationals.

The Nats have won each of their last five games when Niese has been on the mound. They'll look Max Scherzer's way in Monday's tilt versus Niese's Mets.

Sportsbooks are presently dealing the Nationals in the -180 ballpark.

O's have struggled at Yankee Stadium

The confines of Yankee Stadium have been anything but friendly to the Baltimore Orioles as of late.

The O's are winless in their last four trips to the Bronx. Both sides renew acquaintances in New York Monday afternoon.

At the time of writing, the line and total for the game were off the board at sportsbooks.

                Yankees recall LHP Capuano

The New York Yankees recalled left-hander Chris Capuano from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday.

Capuano has pitched in 18 games for the Yankees this season, with a 7.71 ERA in 35 innings.

The team also reinstated left-hander Jacob Lindgren from the seven-day minor league disabled list, recalled him and placed him on the 60-day disabled list (left elbow surgery).

Lindgren pitched in seven games for the Yankees, with a 5.14 ERA in seven innings

                Brewers continue to cash overs

The Milwaukee Brewers are one of the hottest bets in baseball, going over the total in seven consecutive games.

The Brewers offense, that had been averaging just 4.13 runs per game this season, has woken up to the tune of 6.14 runs per game during the win streak.

Bettors backing the streak are hoping the Brewers make it eight in a row when they visit the Miami Marlins Monday.

Milwaukee sends Zach Davies (8.31 ERA, 1-0 O/U) to the mound to take on the Marlins Justin Nicolino (3.07 ERA, 2-3 O/U). The total currently sits at 8.5 runs.

Short turnaround for Pirates after Sunday night game

One of the prices to be paid for success in major league baseball is that every so often, you're asked to play the Sunday night game for ESPN's benefit.

And every once in a while, if you're really unlucky, as the Pittsburgh Pirates were, you find yourself on the really short end of the scheduling and traveling stick.

With its game in St. Louis picked as the prime-time game this week, Pittsburgh was put in a very difficult situation after a 7-1 win as it hurriedly packed, dressed and headed for the bus so that it could get to the airport and fly to Cincinnati.

Once in Cincinnati, the Pirates won't have long to rest. That's because they are to play the Reds Monday at 1:10 p.m. That would be Eastern time, an hour ahead of the time zone in which they played Sunday night.

So if Pittsburgh looks sleepy and plays sloppy in Cincinnati Monday, it may be aggravating for players and fans, but it would be perfectly understandable.

Mets activate 1B Duda off DL

The New York Mets activated first baseman Lucas Duda off the 15-day disabled list Monday after he missed two weeks with a back injury.

Duda, 29, could be available for a pinch-hitting role in Monday's series opener against the Washington Nationals, according to reports.

Duda, on the DL since Aug. 22 with a strain in his lower back, played his second minor league rehab game for Double-A Binghamton on Sunday.

"I'm just feeling good, ready to get back," Duda told the Press & Sun-Bulletin. "I feel great right now. I'm ready to contribute to the big club."

In 113 games for the Mets this season, Duda is batting .247 with 21 home runs and 56 RBIs.

                  Monday, September 7

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB betting cheat sheet: The Dirty Dozen
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Atlanta Braves losing streak has hit a gut-wrenching 12 consecutive games.

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the mid-week major-league schedule:

                  Dirty Dozen

The Atlanta Braves losing streak has now reached 12 games. The Braves were out-scored 36-9 in a four game series in Washington over the weekend, and their next stop is Philadelphia. The Phillies aren't much better off, coming into this series as losers of 10 of their last 13 overall. The Braves have lost 40 of their last 51 road games, and they are expected to continue to struggle in Philly, as an underdog in Game 1.

                  Snake-Bitten

The Arizona Diamondbacks have struggled at home lately, losing six of their last seven at Chase Field. Their 31 home wins this season are three fewer than they have on the road. Arizona will host the San Francisco Giants this week, and the Giants are coming off consecutive wins over the Rockies in Colorado. The Giants have won the last three in this series, sweeping the D'Backs at Chase Field back in July.

                  No Ace in Kansas City

The Royals thought they had found their ace when they acquired Johnny Cueto at the trade deadline, but the right-hander has failed to live up to expectations. He was rocked for five runs on seven hits in just three innings in a loss to Chicago on Sunday. It was his fourth straight defeat, and Kansas City has lost six of his eight starts since coming over from the Reds. His next start comes on the road in Baltimore, and he was crushed by the Orioles earlier this season.

                  Hitting Notes

*The Texas Rangers rank second in the major leagues in runs scored versus left-handed pitching, and they face a southpaw in Game 1 of their series in Seattle on Monday.

*The Red Sox will play the Blue Jays at Fenway in a matinee on Monday, and Toronto leads the majors in runs scored. Boston is batting a major league best .284 in day games, so we could see plenty of runs in Game 1.

                  Pitching Notes

*Matt Harvey is quickly approaching 180 innings, the recommended limit for a pitcher returning after Tommy John surgery. His next scheduled start is a big one, facing the Nationals on Tuesday in Washington. He could be shut down after that as the Mets will likely want to rest him for the playoffs.

*Jake Arrieta followed up his no-hitter versus the Dodgers by tossing eight scoreless innings at home versus Arizona, and he's allowed just one (unearned) run over his last four starts. His next scheduled start comes on Thursday against the Phillies.

                  Totals Streak

The Seattle Mariners return home to host Texas after winning seven of 10 on the road. They've been scoring plenty of runs, and the total has gone over the number in seven of their last eight overall. That trend is even stronger at Safeco, where they have gone over at a rate of 21-4-2 in their last 27 home games.

                  Injury Notes

*Giancarlo Stanton was expected to return from a wrist injury at some point, but recent word out of Miami is the slugger is still dealing with pain and is unlikely to play again this season.

*Nelson Cruz has been sidelined for over a week with a quad injury, but he's hoping to return to the lineup on Monday in Game 1 versus Texas.

Indians and White Sox have a history of going under

The Cleveland Indians and the Chicago White Sox are involved in a lot of low scoring affairs, with the under going 23-4 in the last 27 meetings.

The trend of hot unders between the American League Central rivals included a streak of 14 consecutive unders earlier this season and dating back to last.

The teams begin a three game series Monday afternoon, with the Tribe's Trevor Bauer (4.56 ERA, 9-17 O/U) taking on the Pale Hose's Chris Sale (3.29 ERA, 11-13 O/U). The total currently sits at 7.5 runs.
