    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- NFC South was 22-41-1 LY, 2nd-worst record for an NFL division since 1970.

    -- Teams that lost to I-AA teams: Army-Washington State-Wyoming-Kansas.

-- Colorado's Nolan Arenado has homered in his last six games.

-- Jets cut Matt Flynn this weekend. Over the last 3.5 years, Flynn has been on six NFL teams, started five games, played 498 snaps… and made $15.59M. That's an average of $31,305 per play, a pretty good deal.

-- Former Auburn HC Gene Chizik has improved North Carolina's defense.

-- Washington Huskies freshman QB Jake Browning threw 91 TD passes LY, which is a lot no matter who you're playing against.

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday......

    13) BYU 33, Nebraska 28-- Horrific loss for the Cornhuskers, who gave up a TD on a last-second Hail Mary by BYU's back-up QB. Nebraska had the ball on BYU 21 with 1:30 left, leading 28-27 and BYU was out of timeouts-- they still lost. Rough start to the Mike Riley era in Lincoln.

    12) Costly wins for BYU and Syracuse, who both lost their starting QB for the year with leg injuries. BYU's freshman backup QB was on a Mormon mission in Chile the last two years, so he is a year or two older than the typical freshman.

    11) Temple 27, Penn State 10-- Owls ended a 31-game losing streak to Penn State by beating Nittany Lions for first time since 1941. Temple had ten sacks in the game, as questions swirl about James Franklin's ability to run an offense (as opposed to former coach Bill O'Brien, who now coaches the Houston Texans).

    10) Tennessee 59, Bowling Green 30-- Falcons went for it on 4th and 3 on their own 18 in the 2nd quarter, when they were down 21-10. They made it, but that said a lot about how they view their defense, which got shredded for 399 rushing yards.

    9) Texas A&M 38, Arizona State 17-- I am told this is the only regular season game between the SEC and Pac-12 this season, which is too bad.

    8) Olivia Harlan is a very pretty young lady who is a sideline reporter on the SEC Network; she is the daughter of TNT announcer Kevin Harlan, granddaughter of Bob Harlan, former CEO of Green Bay Packers. She appears to be very good at her job and hopefully she will be more understated than her father is on NBA games.

    7) Former Florida QB Jeff Driskell went 12-15 for 274 yards and four TDs in his debut for Louiaiana Tech last night. Young man had a hard time at Florida, good to see him have success with the pass-happy Bulldogs.

    6) Rough start for Pac-12: Colorado lost at Hawai'i, Washington State lost to a I-AA team, Stanford lost at Northwestern, Arizona State got smoked by A&M, Washington lost at Boise State. It is only one week but not the best start.

    5) Terrible helmets: Virginia and Arizona State, just awful. Northern Illinois had bad ones too, but those were 1965 throwback uniforms. You had to strain to see the logo on the side of the Virginia helmets. No idea what ASU is trying to do with a number on one side of the helmet and their new pitchfork logo on the other.

    4) Eagles cut Tim Tebow, meaning they only have two QBs on their depth chart right now; when one of the two is oft-injured Sam Bradford, they might want to add a QB (Philip Sims?) to their practice squad.

    3) Florida Gators have only six seniors on scholarship on their football team, which is really, really unusual.

    2) Atlanta Braves TV guys were really praising Martin Prado this past week, which is a little unusual for an opposing player- they said his clubhouse presence is missed in Atlanta, where the wheels have totally fallen off the last few weeks.

    1) Then there is Boston, where the Red Sox are taking grief for firing popular TV play-by-play guy Don Orsillo (for no apparent reason). It got so bad the people who did it actually asked Orsillo to say the parting was a mutual decision (which is very obviously is not). Orsillo declined; good for him.

MLB roundup: Price earns 100th career win

TORONTO -- Jose Bautista homered and had two RBIs, David Price pitched seven innings and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Baltimore Orioles 5-1 on Saturday.

The left-handed Price (14-5) earned his 100th career victory, allowing three hits, four walks and one run while striking out eight to improve his record with the Blue Jays to 5-1 in seven starts.

Bautista added an RBI double to his solo homer as the Blue Jays set up a rubber match in the three-game series Sunday. Bautista hit his 32nd homer of the season in the first inning to put Toronto ahead 1-0.

Orioles right-hander Mike Wright (2-4), who was activated from the disabled list Friday, allowed seven hits, one walk and three runs in four innings. He struck out four.

      Cubs 2, Diamondbacks 0

CHICAGO -- Jake Arrieta allowed four hits in eight scoreless innings as Chicago beat Arizona in his first start since he threw a no-hitter last Sunday.

Arrieta struck out seven and walked none in his majors-leading 18th victory of the season. The Cubs, second in the National League wild-card race behind the Pittsburgh Pirates, have won three of their last five games.

David Ross' bases-loaded RBI groundout gave the Cubs a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning and Dexter Fowler hit a home run on the first pitch in the fifth for a 2-0 lead.

      Rays 3, Yankees 2

NEW YORK -- Left-hander Matt Moore and four relievers combined on a five-hitter as Tampa Bay held on for a victory over New York.

Moore returned to Rays' rotation after spending the past month with Triple-A Durham. Two weeks after getting 16 strikeouts in a start for Durham, Moore allowed two runs and three hits in 4 2/3 innings against the Yankees.

Although he was unable to get past the sixth for the seventh straight start since having Tommy John surgery last year, Moore was better than his last stint with Tampa Bay when he posted an 8.78 ERA in six starts before being demoted to the minors.

      Brewers 8, Reds 6

CINCINNATI -- Elian Herrera homered and Jean Segura and Domingo Santana each collected two RBIs, lifting Milwaukee over Cincinnati.

The Brewers won for a fifth straight time at Great American Ball Park, but the Reds made it interesting in the ninth against Francisco Rodriguez.

Back-to-back one-out singles by Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips brought the winning run to the plate as Phillips tied a career-high with four hits. But Rodriguez retired the final two batters for his 34th save.

      Red Sox 9, Phillies 2

BOSTON -- David Ortiz capped an eight-run fourth inning with his 496th career home run as Boston bats smoked Philadelphia for the second straight day.

The designated hitter's home run was his 30th of 2015, setting a franchise record with his ninth 30-homer season to pass Ted Williams, who had eight in 19 seasons. Ortiz needs four more homers to become the 27th player in MLB history to hit 500 career home runs.

Xander Bogaerts slugged a bases-clearing double, reached third on the throw home, and scored on an error to highlight the big fourth inning for Boston. Bogaerts finished with four RBIs after an eighth-inning groundout with the bases loaded.

      Cardinals 4, Pirates 1

ST. LOUIS -- After perhaps his shakiest outing of the year in his last start, Jaime Garcia was back in form, firing seven shutout innings for St. Louis against Pittsburgh and restoring the Cardinals' National League Central lead to 6 1/2 games.

Garcia gave up four hits, three to Sean Rodriguez, and walked one while striking out a season-high nine.

Pirates starter Charlie Morton pitched a solid game but fell to 2-11 in his career against the Cardinals. Morton worked six innings, allowing four hits and two runs (one earned). He walked three and struck out three.

              Sunday, September 6

Pitcher change announced - Marco Estrada, Toronto

Toronto vs. Baltimore on September 6 at 1:07 PM. Previous Starter: Mark Buehrle.

Tillman hammered by Jays in four starts this year

Chris Tillman is scheduled to get the start for the Baltimore Orioles as they close out a three-game set against the Toronto Blue Jays north of the border Sunday afternoon. If his previous four outings against the Blue Birds are anything to go by, expect some offensive output from the AL East-leading Jays.

Tillman sports an 0-3 record (Baltimore is 1-3) with a 15.00 ERA in four starts versus Toronto this year. He's given up a whopping 25 runs - all earned - on 27 hits in 15 innings of work. Toronto's hitters are batting .391 versus Tillman.

Books opened the Jays, who are expected to hand the ball to Marco Estrada, in the -165 area for the series rubber match.

Yankees slumping in Nova's starts as an underdog

The New York Yankees have gone just 2-8 in their last 10 ball games pegged as underdog with Ivan Nova getting the start, including a 2-5 mark this season.

The righty is 5-7 with a 4.50 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 12 starts this season. He's on a three-game losing skid, including being shelled for seven runs on seven hits in a 15-1 loss to the Houston Astros on Aug. 25.

The 28-year-old is scheduled to make the start as the Yankees conclude a three-game set with the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium Sunday afternoon. Books opened the Yankees in the +120 vicinity.

Brewers are the hottest team and over bet in baseball

Yes you read that headline correctly. The Milwaukee Brewers are the hottest team in baseball thanks to six consecutive games and are a red-hot over play.

The Brewers offense, that had been averaging just 4.13 runs per game this season, has woken up to the tune of 6.67 runs per game during the win streak, which not surprisingly led to the over going 6-0 over those six games.

The Brewers will close out a series with the Cincinnati Reds Sunday when they send Jimmy Nelson to the mound to take on the Reds Michael Lorenzen.

Milwaukee is currently a -115 road fave with a total of 8.5.

Mets finding success on the road

Being away from Citi Field doesn't bother the New York Mets, who have gone 8-1 in their last nine road games, scoring a ridiculous 9.44 runs per game over that stretch.

With such high production it's no surprise the over is 7-2 in the Mets last nine road games and is 17-4-1 in their last 22 road games.

The Mets send young lefty Steven Matz to the mound to take on the Miami Marlins Jarred Cosart, with a total that opened at 8.0.

Keuchel takes unbeaten home record to the mound Sunday

Houston Atros ace Dallas Keuchel puts his undefeated record at Minute Maid Stadium on the line Sunday when he faces the visiting Minnesota Twins.

Keuchel has been all but unhittable at home, going 12-0, with a 1.35 ERA, a WHIP of 0.91 with 111 strikeouts to just 23 walks in 15 home starts this season. In those starts, the Astros are 14-1 and have won 12 in a row.

Keuchel and the Astros are currently heavy -243 favorites for Sunday's matchup with the Twins and starter Tyler Duffy.

White Sox going over against right-handers

The over is a hot 22-5 in the Chicago White Sox last 27 games when they go up against right-handed starters.

That is exactly what the Pale Hose will face Sunday when they go up against the Kansas City Royals right-hander Johnny Ceuto.

The White Sox counter with Erik Johnson, who has a O/U record of 5-0 in his last five starts. The total currently sits at 8.0 runs.

                          Diamondbacks cold as underdogs

The Arizona Diamondbacks haven't enjoyed the underdog role, going 0-6 in their last six games as pups, getting outscored 44-16 in the process.

That is exactly what the D-Backs will be Sunday when they visit the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field Sunday, currently on the board at +163.

The D-Backs will send Rubby De La Rosa to the mound to take on the Cubs Kyle Hendricks.

Over sizzling when Iwaukuma meets Oakland

When Seattle Mariners righty Hisashi Iwakuma faces the Oakland Athletics, Over bettors are profiting in a big way.

The Over has cashed in Iwakuma's last eight outings versus the A's. He's slated to get the nod against the Athletics once again Sunday with Sean Nolvin scheduled to counter on the bump.

As of this writing, the total for the game was sitting at 8.
