Preview: Giants (70-66) at Rockies (56-79)
      Game: 4
      Venue: Coors Field
      Date: September 06, 2015 4:10 PM EDT

Now that their lengthy losing streak is over, the San Francisco Giants hope Madison Bumgarner can get them going in a positive direction.

The left-hander looks to help the Giants salvage a four-game series split by winning consecutive road games for the first time in a month Sunday against the Colorado Rockies.

Struggling to remain relevant in both the NL West and wild-card races, San Francisco (70-66) momentarily stopped the bleeding by ending its seven-game skid with Saturday's 7-3 win at Colorado. It was only the third victory in the Giants' last 17 road contests.

San Francisco last won two straight away from home at Atlanta in early August, but should feel confident as Bumgarner (16-7, 2.96 ERA) tries to become the majors' second 17-game winner.

His string of five straight winning starts ended Tuesday when he allowed two runs, eight hits and struck out eight in seven innings while being outpitched by Zack Greinke in a 2-1 loss at Dodger Stadium.

"I just didn't expect us to be on the losing side of a 2-1 ballgame, but that's the way it goes," said Bumgarner, who posted a 1.43 ERA while winning all five August starts.

He gave up a two-run homer to Nolan Arenado, four other hits and struck out eight in 7 2-3 innings of a 6-3 home victory June 28 in his only start this season against Colorado (56-79). Arenado is a career .217 hitter against Bumgarner, but two of his five hits have left the park.

He's hit nine of his career-high 36 home runs against the Giants - the most in a season against San Francisco since Dale Murphy's 11 in 1983. The All-Star third baseman set a Rockies record by homering in a sixth consecutive game Saturday.

"Just another accomplishment for Nolan in a very young career," Colorado manager Walt Weiss said.

Looking to become the first major leaguer to do so in seven straight contests since Kevin Mench of Texas from April 21-28, 2006, Arenado has recorded 13 RBIs in the last eight games and is hitting .538 in the previous six.

Teammate Carlos Gonzalez homered five times and had 12 RBIs in the previous three games before going 0 for 3 on Saturday. He's hit .349 in 43 at-bats and has five home runs against Bumgarner.

Yohan Flande (3-1, 4.04) is 2-0 in seven starts this season, but he's completed more than five innings twice in those outings, allowed 10 home runs in the last six and walked 11 in the last three. Making his first start against the Giants, the left-hander gave up four runs and six hits in two innings while facing them at Coors Field on May 23.

Brandon Crawford doubled and tripled in two at-bats against Flande but is 3 for 32 over his last eight games.

With five hits in the last two games, San Francisco rookie Matt Duffy is batting .385 with 10 RBIs in 13 games against the Rockies this season.

The Giants, however, lost catcher Hector Sanchez to a sprained ankle Saturday. Andrew Susac, another backup catcher, had already returned to San Francisco to have his sprained left wrist examined.

It's also likely outfielder Nori Aoki (concussion) misses a third straight game while Brandon Belt (illness) could sit for the third time in the series.

Preview: Dodgers (77-58) at Padres (65-71)
        Game: 4
        Venue: PETCO Park
        Date: September 06, 2015 4:10 PM EDT

The offense went cold for the Los Angeles Dodgers during an extended losing streak in mid-August.

They haven't needed it much since.

Brett Anderson will try to extend a stellar pitching stretch for the Dodgers on Sunday in the finale of a four-game road series against the San Diego Padres.

Los Angeles (77-58) has averaged 4.0 runs per game in its last 12, far higher than the 1.80 mark it held during a five-game skid from Aug. 18-23. The pitching, though, has been the real difference as the Dodgers have solidified their division lead with 10 wins in 12 games to move a season-best 19 over .500.

Los Angeles has a major league-best 2.17 ERA since Aug. 25, helping push its NL West lead to 7 1/2 games over San Francisco.

Anderson (8-8, 3.43 ERA) has contributed to two wins in that stretch, allowing six runs - three earned - and 11 hits over 11 2-3 innings against Cincinnati and the Giants.

The left-hander has permitted three earned runs or fewer in 23 of his 26 starts this season, including four straight.

Alex Wood was in complete control in Saturday's 2-0 win, allowing three hits in seven innings.

'Credit to the Dodgers' pitchers,' Padres interim manager Pat Murphy said. 'He threw the ball very well and kept us off-balance.'

Anderson, who hasn't faced the Padres (65-71) since 2009, is 4-1 with a 1.87 ERA in his last seven road starts.

San Diego starter Andrew Cashner has a 1-3 record and 1.98 ERA in nine starts against the Dodgers, limiting them to two earned runs over 13 innings in his two most recent this season.

Cashner (5-13, 4.15) has failed to complete six innings in his last two starts, allowing four runs and eight hits over five before leaving without a decision in an 8-6 loss to Texas on Tuesday.

This is a very favorable matchup for Adrian Gonzalez, who is batting .367 with four homers in 30 at-bats against Cashner.

Jimmy Rollins, though, is 0 for 15 versus the right-hander.

While the Dodgers' offense has come to life lately, scoring 17 runs in the first three games of the series and hitting a season-high five home runs in Friday's 8-4 win, catcher Yasmani Grandal is 0 for 33 with 15 strikeouts in his last 11 games.

Manager Don Mattingly said he isn't considering moving the Grandal to the bench, though.

"It happens a lot," Mattingly told MLB's official website. "Guys go through periods of time where they struggle. ... Confidence is a big part of that. Next thing you know he gets two hits, he feels good, he's on a roll."

With two hits Saturday, Matt Kemp has reached base safely in a career-best 25 consecutive games for the Padres. It is the longest active streak in the NL.

Preview: Twins (70-65) at Astros (74-62)
          Game: 3
          Venue: Minute Maid Park
          Date: September 06, 2015 2:10 PM EDT

Dallas Keuchel hasn't been kind to opposing pitchers at Minute Maid Park this season, and there is no reason to think he will change that for Tyler Duffey's homecoming.

The Houston Astros ace will try to improve his sparkling numbers at home, while the Minnesota Twins' rookie will look to improve his on the road in Sunday's series finale.

Keuchel (16-6, 2.24 ERA) has won his first 12 home decisions and will try to become the first pitcher to win 13 straight to start a season since Boston's Boo Ferriss in 1946.

Only two other pitchers have won their first 13 decisions at home since 1914; Boston's Tex Hughson (1944) and Larry Benton of the New York Giants (1928).

Keuchel is 12-0 with a 1.35 ERA in 15 home starts, and another victory would make him the second in the majors to reach 17 this season. A win would also make him the first Astros' pitcher to get to 17 since Roy Oswalt went 17-10 in 2008.

Oswalt is the only pitcher with a sub-2 ERA in a season at Minute Maid Park with a minimum of 81 innings pitched. He had a 1.91 ERA there in 2007.

Keuchel could also break the franchise mark for most consecutive home wins. His 14th straight victory in Houston (74-62), dating back to last year, would pass Danny Darwin's record of 13 set from 1989-90.

The left-hander picked up his last home win in an 8-3 victory over Seattle on Monday, surrendering six hits and one run in seven innings while walking one and striking out eight. The one run came on a Mark Trumbo solo homer, the first home run Keuchel has given up at Minute Maid Park since Aug. 10, 2014.

Consistency has been Keuchel's game this year, but the Astros have wavered of late with three losses in their last four games and five in their last eight.

Houston almost rallied for a victory Saturday, but Jose Altuve's bases-loaded liner was caught by a charging Byron Buxton in center field to seal a 3-2 Minnesota win, cutting the Astros' lead in the AL West to two games over Texas.

"We thought we were going to make a run at it," Astros manager A.J. Hinch told MLB's official website. "I like our competitiveness."

The Twins (70-65) have won 11 of 15 and remained 1 1/2 games back of the Rangers for the second wild-card spot.

Duffey (2-1, 4.56) was born and raised in Houston and played at Rice University. He has filled the void in Minnesota's rotation left by Phil Hughes' back injury over the last month.

'We're hungry for good starts and the more we get from here on out the better our chances are going to be,' Twins manager Paul Molitor said.

Duffey will make his sixth start and fourth on the road, where he is 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA compared to 1-0 with a 2.53 ERA at home.

In an 8-6 home win over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday, the rookie right-hander recorded two outs in the fifth inning before a single, three walks and another single ended his night. He allowed three hits and three runs while walking three and striking out two.

Preview: Rangers (71-63) at Angels (68-67)
            Game: 3
            Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
            Date: September 06, 2015 3:35 PM EDT

Colby Lewis' margin for error is greater than most every pitcher in the majors because of the Texas Rangers' tendency to score plenty when he's on the mound.

He's beginning to find out what it's like when that isn't the case.

The playoff-hopeful Rangers have kept winning consistently lately despite not pushing as many runs across the plate, and they'll look to take two of three from the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday in Anaheim.

Lewis (14-7, 4.50 ERA) needs one more victory to set a career high, largely due to his 6.62 run-support average that ranks fourth in the majors. Of the 28 pitchers with at least 12 wins, only Toronto's Drew Hutchison (5.07) and Detroit's Alfredo Simon (4.86) have a higher ERA.

The right-hander received a total of four runs of support over his last three starts, though, and has lost the last two, giving up 11 runs - nine earned - while walking six in 10 2-3 innings.

Monday marked just the second time in his 27 starts - and first since May 27 - that the Rangers' offense failed to provide any support.

'(Giving up) two runs (in the third inning), with our offense, I wasn't worried about it," Lewis said after a 7-0 loss at San Diego. "I just told myself I had to go out there and put up zeros. There are no excuses. I just didn't make the pitches when I needed to make the pitches.'

Lewis is 1-2 with a 7.56 ERA in three outings against the Angels this season, including giving up a season-worst 10 earned runs in a 12-6 loss July 5 - one of the two times the Rangers scored one run during Lewis' time on the mound against Los Angeles.

Texas (71-63) didn't need much offense to beat the Angels (68-67) on Saturday, as Rougned Odor's eighth-inning sacrifice fly gave it a 2-1 victory. The Rangers have won seven of nine despite averaging 3.8 runs during that stretch and lead Minnesota by 1 1/2 games for the AL's second wild card.

They also pulled within two games of Houston for the West lead after the Astros lost to the Twins.

The Angels, meanwhile, had their three-game winning streak snapped and fell 3 1/2 behind the Rangers in the wild-card race. Mike Trout tripled, but his career-high stretch without a homer reached 27 games.

Albert Pujols went 0 for 3 with a walk as the designated hitter, and he's likely to start at DH for the rest of the season as he battles a nagging right foot injury.

Los Angeles might have to be more productive at the plate with Hector Santiago (7-9, 3.37) on the mound. Santiago struggled again Monday, allowing five runs and walking three over a season-low 2 2-3 innings in an 11-5 loss at Oakland.

He's dropped his last three starts with a 10.13 ERA while failing to get through the fifth inning each time.

"It's just one of those rough times, and I kind of let it pile up on top of each other, tried to fix some things and change some things I don't need to," Santiago told MLB's official website. "Now I feel like I'm fighting myself mechanically."

The left-hander's eight-start winless stretch began July 25 when he gave up four runs over five innings in the Angels' 7-6 loss to the Rangers. He went 2-0 with a 0.93 ERA the first three times he faced them this season.

Odor is 5 for 9 with a homer and two doubles off Santiago in 2015.

Preview: Mariners (65-71) at Athletics (58-78)
              Game: 3
              Venue: O.co Coliseum
              Date: September 06, 2015 4:05 PM EDT

While they're doing just fine offensively without their top slugger, the surging Seattle Mariners could become even more prolific if Nelson Cruz can return.

With Cruz questionable for Sunday's series finale, the visiting Mariners go after their longest winning streak in a year when Hisashi Iwakuma seeks vengeance against the Oakland Athletics.

Seattle (65-71) has opened September on a roll offensively, batting .336 with eight home runs and averaging 8.5 runs in winning all four games. Seth Smith had three hits Saturday, while Logan Morrison and Shawn O'Malley homered in an 8-3 win at O.co Coliseum.

"We sprinted to the lead and held on," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "I thought the guys swung the bats real well."

Morrison is 6 for 11 with three home runs and 10 RBIs this month, and O'Malley has gone 5 for 6 with three RBIs in two games since getting recalled. Kyle Seager is 17 for 34 with four homers, four doubles and 11 RBIs over his past eight.

The Mariners may have to chase their first five-game win streak since Sept. 2-6, 2014, without Cruz. The 35-year-old is second in the majors with 39 homers but hasn't played since Wednesday due to a quad injury. McClendon said he's 50-50 for Sunday.

Seattle, well back in the playoff race, is also seeking its first three-game sweep in Oakland since 2009.

Iwakuma (6-3, 4.22 ERA) went 3-0 with a 1.71 ERA over a four-start stretch that included a no-hitter versus Baltimore before allowing a career high-tying seven runs over 4 2-3 innings in an 11-5 home loss to the A's on Aug. 24. He was 4-2 with a 3.54 ERA in his prior six versus Oakland.

Iwakuma matched a career high with four walks last Saturday, but only gave up two runs over 5 2-3 innings in a 7-6 win at the Chicago White Sox. He's 3-0 with a 2.38 ERA in his last five road starts.

Billy Butler went 2 for 3 with two RBIs Saturday and Mark Canha hit his 12th home run to extend Oakland's homer streak to a season-best 11 games. Butler has gone 12 for 23 over his last nine games, while Stephen Vogt is 11 for 19 in his past six.

Brett Lawrie doubled in the opener, leaving him 14 for 28 in his past eight games versus Seattle.

The AL West-worst A's (58-78) look to avoid their fifth straight loss as Sean Nolin makes his first start since coming over from Toronto in the Josh Donaldson trade in the offseason.

The left-hander had a 2.66 ERA over 14 appearances - including 12 starts - at Triple-A Nashville after missing most of the season following sports hernia surgery and a strained shoulder.

"It's definitely been a long year, but I think just getting everything corrected and doing it right has finally paid off in the past month or so," Nolin told MLB's official website.

In his only other career start, the 25-year-old allowed six runs and seven hits over 1 1-3 innings in Toronto's 10-6 home loss to Baltimore on May 24, 2013. He also gave up one run in one inning of relief in a 14-4 victory over visiting Seattle last September.

Seattle's Franklin Gutierrez is day-to-day with a groin injury, while Oakland's Sam Fuld could return from a back issue. Josh Reddick is uncertain after leaving Saturday's game with an illness.

                      Sunday, September 6

Pitcher change announced - Marco Estrada, Toronto

Toronto vs. Baltimore on September 6 at 1:07 PM. Previous Starter: Mark Buehrle.

Tillman hammered by Jays in four starts this year

Chris Tillman is scheduled to get the start for the Baltimore Orioles as they close out a three-game set against the Toronto Blue Jays north of the border Sunday afternoon. If his previous four outings against the Blue Birds are anything to go by, expect some offensive output from the AL East-leading Jays.

Tillman sports an 0-3 record (Baltimore is 1-3) with a 15.00 ERA in four starts versus Toronto this year. He's given up a whopping 25 runs - all earned - on 27 hits in 15 innings of work. Toronto's hitters are batting .391 versus Tillman.

Books opened the Jays, who are expected to hand the ball to Marco Estrada, in the -165 area for the series rubber match.

Yankees slumping in Nova's starts as an underdog

The New York Yankees have gone just 2-8 in their last 10 ball games pegged as underdog with Ivan Nova getting the start, including a 2-5 mark this season.

The righty is 5-7 with a 4.50 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 12 starts this season. He's on a three-game losing skid, including being shelled for seven runs on seven hits in a 15-1 loss to the Houston Astros on Aug. 25.

The 28-year-old is scheduled to make the start as the Yankees conclude a three-game set with the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium Sunday afternoon. Books opened the Yankees in the +120 vicinity.

Road teams, under cash on the diamond Saturday

It was a good idea to back teams in the visitors dugout and the under in Saturday's Major League Baseball action.

Highlighted by four shutouts yesterday, the under went an impressive 11-5, good for a chase rate of 68.75 percent.

Meanwhile, road teams went a solid 10-6 straight up, a cash rate of 62.50.

Preview: Mystics (16-14) at Dream (12-18)

                            Date: September 06, 2015 3:00 PM EDT

After letting the Atlanta Dream hang around in the Eastern Conference race, the Washington Mystics have a chance to put them away.

The slumping Mystics wrap up a difficult four-game trip with Sunday's showdown against an Atlanta team with no margin for error left.

Washington (16-14) appeared to be a postseason lock until losing five of six, including all three games on this trek. The slump has kept Atlanta (12-18) alive for a playoff spot, though it needs to win all four remaining games and have the Mystics lose their last four to grab the No. 4 seed.

'Season's not over, we'll see what happens in the end,' forward Angel McCoughtry said after the Dream's 80-75 overtime loss at New York on Tuesday. 'Keep playing hard, give it all we got to the end.'

Atlanta does have two games left with the Mystics and has dominated the recent series, having won 15 of the past 19 regular-season meetings. Those include a 72-69 Dream victory at Philips Arena on June 26 and a 64-61 Atlanta win in Washington on June 12.

The Mystics have lost eight of nine in the regular season at Philips.

Atlanta had won three straight before narrow losses to Chicago and New York. It's leaned heavily on McCoughtry in that stretch, with the two-time scoring champion averaging 22.6 points and tallying 25 while coming off the bench against the Liberty.

Tiffany Hayes has provided a lift as well, averaging 17.0 points over the last three games and scoring a career-high 28 in a key win at Indiana on Aug. 28.

Washington showed considerable offensive improvement Thursday at Los Angeles after being held to fewer than 60 points in losses to Seattle and Phoenix to open the trip. The Mystics shot 48.6 percent and had six double-figure scorers against the Sparks, but couldn't hold a 15-point lead in a 93-91 defeat.

"We've just got to continue to play hard through the adversity we go through on the road," guard Ivory Latta said. "Road games are hard and the crowd was into it, so you got to just fight through it."

Washington also has had to deal with a back injury to Kara Lawson that's expected to keep the starting point guard out for a fifth straight game Sunday.

Latta, Washington's leader at 11.1 points per game, scored 18 on Thursday and Emma Meesseman had 19 on 9-of-12 shooting. Meesseman scored 21 and went 8 of 11 on June 12, with Latta getting held to five points on 2 of 12 from the field.

Preview: Shock (16-14) at Sparks (13-18)

                              Date: September 06, 2015 5:00 PM EDT

Just over a month ago, the Los Angeles Sparks owned the WNBA's worst record. Candace Parker's return sparked a surge that now has them one win away from a spot in the playoffs, and adding a healthy Nneke Ogwumike could make the sub-.500 club a tough out.

The only team to defeat the Sparks in the past two weeks and the only one which has been hotter is the Tulsa Shock, who go after a seventh consecutive victory Sunday at Staples Center.

Los Angeles was 3-14 after losing at Minnesota on July 29 when Parker made her season debut after sitting out to get 100 percent healthy. The Sparks have since won 10 of 14 to move into the fourth and final playoff position in the Western Conference, and their magic number over fifth-place Seattle is down to one.

Parker has posted 12 double-doubles in the last 13 games, averaging 20.9 points and 10.7 rebounds in her last seven. She had 26 points and 11 boards in Thursday's 93-91 win over Washington, but maybe the more important performance came from Ogwumike.

The All-Star forward had missed six games due to injury but returned to score 24 points and grab 10 boards in 34 minutes.

Ogwumike has averaged 22.3 points in three meetings with the Shock this year. She had 26 in an 84-57 win at Tulsa on Aug. 6, and she was clearly missed in the most recent meeting as the Sparks fell 76-66 on Aug. 28 despite Parker's 24 points and 11 rebounds.

While that is Los Angeles' only loss in six games, the Shock (16-14) have reeled off six straight wins to wrap up a postseason berth following a 10-game skid. Tulsa still could catch second-place Phoenix but can secure at least the No. 3 seed with a win Sunday because it enters 3 1/2 games ahead of Los Angeles.

These teams have split four meetings with the home team winning each time.

Odyssey Sims has fueled Tulsa's six-game win streak with an average of 21.7 points. She's totaled 54 in the last two after getting held to 15 by Los Angeles as Riquna Williams stepped up to also score 15, but Williams will miss a second straight game due to a leg injury.

Sims had only four points and missed all six of her field-goal attempts in last month's loss to the Sparks and missed the other in July due to injury.

Preview: Storm (9-21) at Sky (19-12)

                                Date: September 06, 2015 6:00 PM EDT

The Chicago Sky can move one step closer to home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs by spoiling Jewell Loyd's return to her hometown.

The Sky can win for the fifth time in six games and eliminate Loyd's Seattle Storm from playoff contention Sunday night.

Chicago (19-12) picked up a key victory Thursday, 82-60 over Eastern Conference leader New York. Courtney Vandersloot matched a season high with 21 points and made all five 3-point attempts.

The Sky appear to face too large of a deficit at 2 1/2 games with not enough time to catch the Liberty, who can secure the East's No. 1 seed with a win in Minnesota on Sunday or a Chicago loss.

The Sky's main focus is likely on maintaining its one-game lead over third-place Indiana and 2 1/2-game edge over fourth-place Washington.

The Storm (9-21) are in line to miss back-to-back postseasons for the first time since their first two years of 2000 and '01. A loss or a Los Angeles win over Tulsa on Sunday will make it official.

Loyd will be trying to bolster her case for rookie of the year. The Chicago native and No. 1 overall draft pick leads first-year players with 10.4 points per game and has scored 34 over the past two contests.

Loyd had a team-best 16 points and career-high six assists for her short-handed team in an 85-67 loss to Tulsa on Thursday. The Storm chose to rest veteran point guard Sue Bird while Monica Wright and Abby Bishop were out with injuries.

Ramu Tokashiki hasn't played since Aug. 21 because she has been helping lead Japan to a berth in the Olympics. Tokashiki, the MVP of the Asian championships that concluded Saturday, is slated to return for Seattle on Tuesday at the earliest.

"We've got several people playing out of position right now and, as small as that may seem, it can throw you out of sync," coach Jenny Boucek told the team's official website. "Our systems are based on synchronicity. We got a lot of weird combinations in right now."

Chicago's second-leading scorer Cappie Pondexter (15.0 points per game) has missed the past two contests with a concussion, and her status is uncertain.

Pondexter and Chicago's other starters scored in double figures in a 94-84 win in Seattle on Aug. 14. Vandersloot and Elena Delle Donne led the way with 21 points apiece.
