    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Washington's Ryan Zimmerman has 23 RBI in his last eleven games.

-- Atlanta Braves lost their last nine games, outscored 82-20.

-- Juan Uribe holds an odd record; in 2010, he saw 21 pitches in one game without swinging at any of them, the most of any player in the last ten years.

-- Credit to Oklahoma State, which went to Central Michigan and TCU, which went to Minnesota; much better than opening the year with cupcakes.

-- Padres are 7-5 in extra innings; road team won 11 of the 12 games.

-- Former Packers/Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman is now a high school coach on Cape Cod; man must have saved his money to be doing that.

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with long weekend here......

    13) Bryce Harper's line tonight: 0-4-0-1....that is four at-bats, four walks, one with the bases loaded. He saw 20 pitches and swung at none of them, second-most of any batter in the last decade. Impressive patience. Terrible pitching.

    12) Clayton Kershaw induced 35 misses on 75 San Francisco swings Wednesday night, five more misses than any other pitcher has induced in the last decade.

    11) ESPN suspended Curt Schilling for the rest of the season, because he doesn't have the common sense to put a lid on his political views when his bosses tell him to. He's lost most of his money investing in a video game venture that failed; you'd think he'd figure out he needs a good job-- sometime you have to bite your damn tongue, or not hit the send button anytime you feel like it.

    10) That said, how is Schilling suspended but Cris Carter is still on the air? He told NFL rookies to pay off friends to take the fall if a crime was committed and he still has a job? Seems like a double standard may be at work here.

    9) Utah 24, Michigan 17-- Wolverines threw three INTs, one returned for a TD, as Jim Harbaugh lost his Michigan debut. Total yardage was 355-337, Michigan. You get the idea a 43 pass/29 rush ratio isn't what Harbaugh had in mind.

    8) South Carolina 17, North Carolina 13-- Gamecocks faked a punt in first 6:00 of game. Both teams ran for 200+ yards; Gamecocks have a QB problem-- four different guys played QB, two from the Wildcat formation. Tar Heels threw two INTs in red zone- they had a 440-394 edge in yardage. Both defenses have improved.

    7) In the biggest **** here in Albany, the Apple Store moved....to a smaller space and that was surprising. Their old location was always crowded; think the **** charges an outrageous rent, which might be why they downsized some.

    6) FIU 15, Central Florida 14-- Bad loss for UCF, which beat the Panthers 38-0 last time these two teams met. FIU is coached by former Illinois coach Ron Turner, who is Norv Turner's brother. UCF led 14-3 at the half, then never scored again.

    5) TCU 23, Minnesota 17-- Good road win for Horned Frogs, who didn't look like the #2 team in the country but they won, despite missing two of its better defensive guys. TCU needs Minnesota to play well in Big 14 to make this win look better.

    4) Western Kentucky 14, Vanderbilt 12-- Good luck in the SEC if you can't beat the Hilltoppers at home. Vandy was -3 in turnovers, which is how you lose even when you outgain the other side 385-246. First win for a C-USA team over an SEC team since the 2010 Liberty Bowl, when UCF upset Georgia.

    3) Arizona 42, UTSA 32-- Wildcats scored two defensive TDs but lost its star LB to a knee injury and then gave up 525 yards to the Roadrunners, who ran 95 plays.

    2) Harvard's basketball team lost its best player for the year with a knee injury; Ivy League teams cannot redshirt players, so the kid withdrew from school and will be back in 2016-17, so it is redshirting without officially calling it that. Losing your senior PG in September is never, ever a good thing.

    1) Very, very late score update: Out in Hawai'i, in a game that ended at 4:58am, the officials bungle setting the ball properly, Colorado doesn't get a play from the 6-yard line in the last five seconds and Hawai'i beats the Buffaloes 28-20. Not sure who is grading those officials, but they should get an F for that last sequence.

Hutchison rolling along in home starts

Toronto Blue Jays' righty Drew Hutchison has some pretty insane home/away splits and he'll get another chance to build on his impressive home form with the Baltimore Orioles in town to open a three-game set Friday evening.

Hutchison is 11-1 with a 2.46 ERA in 14 starts at Rogers Centre so far this season and the Jays have won his last 10 starts north of the border.

In away starts, the 25-year-old is 2-1 with a 9.00 ERA in 11 appearances.

Books have opened the Jays in the -180 vicinity.

Twins' closer Perkins 'can barely walk' due to spasms

Minnesota Twins closer Glen Perkins told reporters on Thursday that he "can barely walk" suffering back spasms.

Perkins will definitely not travel with the team for a three-game series beginning Friday at the Chicago White Sox and his timetable for return is unknown.

Perkins has converted 32 of 34 save opportunities this season and has a 2.68 ERA with 46 strikeouts against only eight walks. Kevin Jepsen, who was acquired at the trade deadline, will fill in as the Twins' closer with Trevor May working as the primary set-up man.

Diamondbacks hold edge versus Cubs in recent meetings

The Arizona Diamondbacks open a three-game set against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field Friday afternoon and if recent head to heads between the National League clubs are anything to go by, the Cubs could have their hands full.

The Dbacks have posted a record of 7-1 in the last eight meetings with the Cubs, including taking two of three from a series at Chase Field earlier this season.

Early lines have the Cubs -205 with Jon Lester on the bump. The Dbacks, who are expected to counter with Zack Godley, are +188.

                Friday, September 4

Pitcher change announced - Carlos Martinez, St. Louis

St. Louis vs. Pittsburgh on September 4 at 8:15 PM. Previous Starter: Lance Lynn.

Tigers activate Lobstein for Friday start

Left-hander Kyle Lobstein was reinstated off the 60-day disabled list Thursday, and he will start Friday for the Detroit Tigers against the Cleveland Indians.

Lobstein went 3-5 with a 4.34 ERA in eight starts before landing on the disabled list May 24 with left shoulder soreness. He lost his final three starts before acknowledging he was pitching through shoulder discomfort.

An MRI detected no structural damage.

"He pitched pretty well for us last year," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "He was injured this year. We'll see what he can do."

Lobstein went 1-2 with a 4.34 ERA in seven games, including six starts, last season.

He was a combined 0-3 with a 5.68 ERA in six rehab starts with Class A Lakeland and Triple-A Toledo. In a Sunday start with Toledo, he allowed four runs and struck out five in 6 2/3 innings.

Ausmus said Lobstein's fastball topped out at 88 mph in his rehab.

Roark, not Strasburg, will start Friday for Nationals

Tanner Roark will be limited to about 85 pitches when he starts for the Washington Nationals on Friday against the Atlanta Braves, according to manager Matt Williams.

"Depending on (the amount) of stressful innings," said Williams, whose team is fighting for its post-season lives while trying to catch the first-place New York Mets.

Washington pulled to within six games of the idle Mets with a 15-1 laugher over the Braves on Thursday in the first of a four-game set.

Roark, 28, was 15-10 with an ERA of 2.85 in 31 starts last year for the Nationals. But when Washington signed free agent Max Scherzer to a seven-year deal in January, Roark was bumped to the bullpen. The Nationals began the season with a starting rotation of Scherzer, Jordan Zimmermann, Stephen Strasburg, Doug Fister and Gio Gonzalez.

Over bets on fire heading into Friday's schedule

Over wagers continued to stay hot, going 6-0 on the diamond Thursday to head into Friday's slate of games with a record of 18-3 over the past two days.

Four clubs - the Washington Nationals, Kansas City Royals, Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres - basically took care of the Over on their own, plating 15, 15, 11 and 10 runs respectively in their ball games.

Overs have the slightest of edges season to date, improving to 964-924 (51.06 percent). Over the past seven days, the O/U count is 51-37 (57.95 percent).

Division foes are sinking Pirates' title hopes

Few enjoy their time in Wisconsin's largest city less than the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Since the 2007 season, the Pirates are 17-61 in Milwaukee. They fell to 2-7 at Miller Park in 2015 after dropping a 5-3 decision to the Brewers on Thursday, but manager Clint Hurdle wasn't about to dwell on his squad's misfortune in the Brew City.

"We're ready to move on," Hurdle said.

While holding a comfortable lead in the National League wild-card race, the Pirates now trail the NL Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals by seven games -- exactly the number of games they dropped in nine meetings at Milwaukee this season.

It is not just the Brewers who have Pittsburgh's number. After Thursday, the Pirates are 21-32 against division opponents this season. Even the lowly Brewers are better within the NL Central at 24-29.

MLB roundup: Brewers complete sweep of Pirates

MILWAUKEE -- Taylor Jungmann allowed just one run over six innings and Domingo Santana hit a late home run as the Milwaukee Brewers finished a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 5-3 victory Thursday night at Miller Park.

Jungmann won for the third time in his last four starts, holding the Pirates to three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

Jordy Mercer had two doubles, walked and scored twice but the Pirates went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Pirates starter Francisco Liriano went just five innings and allowed four runs on seven hits and five walks while striking out four.

                White Sox 6, Twins 4

MINNEAPOLIS -- J.B. Shuck's pinch-hit, two-run triple in the top of the seventh inning was the difference as the Chicago White Sox beat Minnesota.

With two on and the Sox trailing by a run, Shuck pinch-hit for Tyler Saladino and ripped a 1-1 offering from Twins reliever Casey Fien into the left-center-field gap, scoring Alexei Ramirez and Geovany Soto.

White Sox pitcher Jeff Samardzija earned the win, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out four.

                Nationals 15, Braves 1

WASHINGTON -- Hot-hitting Ryan Zimmerman had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in four runs and every starter either had a hit or drove in a run as Washington crushed Atlanta in the first of a four-game series.

Zimmerman now has six hits and seven RBIs in his last two games, with two homers and three doubles. He has 37 RBIs since coming off the disabled list July 28.

The beneficiary of the offensive outburst was Jordan Zimmerman, who won his fourth start in a row and has not lost at home since June 17. He allowed two hits and one run in six innings with five strikeouts and four walks.

                Rockies 11, Giants 3

DENVER -- Carlos Gonzalez continued his home run barrage as Colorado beat fading San Francisco Giants.

Gonzalez hit a two-run homer in the Rockies' four-run first and belted another two-run shot in the four-run run as Colorado strafed starter Ryan Vogelsong.

Chris Rusin threw his second complete game in four starts and just the third for Colorado this season. He is the first Rockies pitcher to throw two complete games in a season since Ubaldo Jimenez in 2010 and the first to throw two complete games at Coors Field in one season since Aaron Cook in 2008.

                Royals 15, Tigers 7

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kendrys Morales stroked four hits and drove in four runs and Lorenzo Cain hit a three-run homer as Kansas City outslugged Detroit.

Morales, who hit a two-run double in a six-run seventh to break the game open, upped his RBI total to 98, which ranks second in the American League. Cain, who extended his hitting streak to 11 games, was one of six Royals with a multi-hit game. Cain raised his average to .315.

Ben Zobrist also collected four hits, scored three runs and drove in two runs while Paulo Orlando belted a two-run homer.

                Padres 10, Dodgers 7

SAN DIEGO -- Jedd Gyorko hit a two-run homer off right-handed reliever Jim Johnson in the bottom of the eighth to power San Diego over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Petco Park.

Justin Upton drew a walk to lead off the eighth to bring up Gyorko, whose 387-foot drive into the seats in left center capped a rally that saw the Padres score in three straight innings after the Dodgers took a 7-4 lead with five runs in the top of the sixth.

The highlight of the Dodgers sixth-inning rally was a two-run single by 21-year-old Corey Seager in his major league debut that gave the National League West leaders the lead. Seager was the Dodgers first-round pick (18th overall) in the 2012 draft. He was promoted Thursday morning from Triple-A Oklahoma City and started at shortstop.

Garza getting roughed in recent starts for Brewers

Milwaukee Brewers hurler Matt Garza has hit a bit of a rough patch in his recent outings allowing 19 runs on 27 hits and seven walks in his last three outings (13 1/3 innings), resulting in an 0-2 record in the process.

The Brewers have lost all three of those starts and, in fact, have lost Garza's last four outings despite the righty pitching well in a 3-2 loss at the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 12.

The Brew Crew visit the Cincinnati Reds with Garza expected to take the mound Friday evening.

Rays not cashing following a day off

The Tampa Bay Rays have gone just 2-9 in their last 11 ball games following an off day. The Rays will be in that spot when they open a three-game set at Yankee Stadium Friday evening.

Tampa has lost two-straight games off of rest days but won versus the Atlanta Braves by a score of 2-0 following an off day back on Aug. 11.

The Rays, slated to give the ball to Jake Odorizzi, are presently around +146, while the Yankees are around -159 with Luis Severino on the bump.

Yankees place 1B Teixeira on DL

The New York Yankees placed first baseman Mark Teixeira on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a right shin bone bruise.

The move is retroactive to Aug. 27. Teixeira underwent tests Tuesday that showed his sore right shin does not have a broken bone but rather a serious bruise.

Teixeira hit a foul ball off the shin about two weeks ago and started just one game since then.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi expects Teixeira to be back before the end of the regular season.

Teixeira, who landed a spot on the American League All-Star team this summer, is batting .255 with 31 home runs and 79 RBIs in 117 games.

The Yankees also recalled right-handed relief pitcher Nick Rumbelow from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

                    Cardinals activate OF Jay

The St. Louis Cardinals activated outfielder Jon Jay from the 15-day disabled list Friday.

Jay, 30, who was placed on the DL for a second time this season on July 1, most recently missed 57 games due to a left wrist stress reaction. The left-handed hitting Jay was sent to Triple-A Memphis last Sunday on an injury rehabilitation assignment. In four games with the Redbirds, he batted .385 (5-for-13) with one home run and two stolen bases.

                    A's soaring above totals recently

The Oakland Athletics have become a favorite for Over bettors recently due to their penchant for participating in high-scoring affairs.

The Over has gone 9-1-1 in Oakland's previous 11 games heading into Friday's matchup with the Seattle Mariners. Edgard Olmos and Aaron Brooks are the probable starters for the M's and A's, respectively.

After opening with a total of 7.5, Pinnacle Sports has moved that number to 8 as of this writing.

In 57 games prior to being placed on the DL, Jay batted .223 with one home run and 11 RBIs for St. Louis. Jay, who had wrist surgery last offseason, spent time on the DL earlier in the year (May 11-29) with left wrist tendinitis.

MLB betting cheat sheet: Houston, we have a problem
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Houston Astros have lost back-to-back games and four of their last six overall heading into their weekend series against the Twins.

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the weekend major-league schedule:

                      Houston, We Have A Problem...

The Astros have lost four of their last six overall, and Texas is hot on their heels. The Rangers have won six of seven and 15 of their last 20 overall, and trail Houston by only two games. The Astros will host the Twins in a three game series at Minutemaid Park this weekend, and Houston has the second best home record in the American League (46-23). Minnesota is just 27-38 on the road this season.

                      Giant Slump

It wasn't long ago that the defending champs appeared like they were going to catch the Dodgers in the NL West, but they now sit 6.5 games back of LA in the standings. They have lost six straight, three of those losses coming to the Dodgers at Chavez Ravine. The Giants will be in Colorado over the weekend, and the Rockies have won four of the last six meetings in this series, including an 11-3 victory in Game 1 on Thursday.

Baltimore Bad Bet On The Road

The Orioles have really hit hard times, coming into Toronto tonight as losers of 12 of their last 14 overall. They now sit just three games out of the cellar in the AL East, with no realistic hope of making the playoffs. They've lost eight of their last nine on the road, and they've lost 48 of their last 68 here at Rogers Center.

                      Hitting Notes

*Josh Donaldson was 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the win over Cleveland on Wednesday, and he has a major league best 111 RBIs this season. He's done the bulk of his damage at home in Toronto, where he's hitting .342 with 22 home runs and 64 RBIs.

*Jason Heyward is swinging a hot bat, hitting .392 over the last seven days. He's been better at home in St. Louis, batting .323 at Busch Stadium, compared to just .263 on the road.

                      Pitching Notes

*Drew Hutchison has been a very different pitcher in Toronto than he has been on the road. The right-hander has won six straight at home, and he's 11-1 with a 2.46 ERA overall at Rogers Center this year. He hasn't had nearly as much success on the road, with an ERA over 9.00.

*Jake Arrieta tossed a no hitter against the Dodgers his last time out, giving him a major league best 17 wins on the season. His next start comes at home against Arizona on Saturday, and this looks like a potential trouble spot. The D'Backs are one of the few teams that have hit Arrieta, tagging him for six runs on seven hits over six innings earlier this season.

                      Totals Streak

Over the last few years, we've come to think of San Diego's PETCO Park as one of the most pitcher friendly in the majors. That's quickly becoming a myth here in 2015. According to ESPN Park Factors, PETCO ranks in the top 10 in home runs. The Padres have seen the total go over at a rate of 21-3-2 in their last 26 games versus a right-handed starter.

                      Injury Notes

*Yasiel Puig remains sidelined for the Dodgers with a hamstring injury. He's expected to miss at least the first half of September.

*Matt Cain has been placed on the 15 day DL by the Giants, he's suffering from right elbow inflammation.

                      Weather Notes

                      * There is as much as a 58 percent chance of thunderstorms in Detroit as the Tigers host the Cleveland Indians Friday.

                      * Early forecasts show wind blowing out to left field at Kauffman Stadium when the Kansas City Royals host the Chicago White Sox Saturday.
