    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

South Point sportsbook in Las Vegas posted odds for the Republican nomination:

4-1-- Donald Trump-- Openng line was 20-1. God help us all if he wins.

5-1-- Scott Walker-- Wisconsin governor is fading and not a college graduate.

5-1-- John Kasich-- Started out 7-1, looks like an actor playing the President.

10-1-- Marco Rubio-- Started out 20-1, not really sure why he has risen.

15-1-- Jeb Bush-- Started out 2-1; are people tired of his family?

20-1-- Ted Cruz/Ben Carson-- Of the 18 candidates listed at South Point, there are two I've never heard of. Not good for their chances.

    **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Hump Day happenings..........

    13) Over his last 19 starts, Atlanta's Shelby Miller is 0-11 with an ERA of 3.13; if the guy didn't have bad luck, he wouldn't have any luck at all. There have been six no-hitters thrown in the major leagues since his last win.

    12) Good news: McDonald's will (finally) start offering breakfast 24 hours a day, starting October 6. Jack-in-the-Box has been doing that out west for years. Sausage biscuits 24 hours a day-- this is tremendous!!!!

    11) September 1st and I already bought my first college basketball magazine for this winter. Lot of research work coming in the weeks ahead.

    10) CBS parted ways with golf analyst David Feherty, whose appeal never made sense to me. I never found him funny, but he is expected to land at NBC, seeing as he already has a talk show on Golf Channel, which is owned by NBC.

    9) Joey Votto's on-base %age since the All-Star break: .581. Wow.

    8) Five of Pitt Panthers' six incoming basketball players are transfer students; there is talk the fanbase in Pittsburgh is getting restless with coach Jamie Dixon.

Side notes; When I was at AAU games in Las Vegas in July, Dixon's dad was there with him, watching recruits. Pretty cool. Jamie Dixon was actually a child actor.

    7) Paul Goldschmidt lined into a triple play Tuesday, the first time an Arizona player has ever done that. Diamondbacks still swept a twinbill in Denver.

    6) Orioles are in freefall, losing 12 of last 13 games. You look at their roster and wonder how the hell they stayed in contention as long as they did.

    5) Woman named Jessica Pegula won her first round match at US Open Monday; her parents own the Sabres/Bills in Buffalo- they can afford a good tennis coach.

    4) 49ers are missing 11 of their 22 starters from last season. And their coach.

    3) Halloween is still 60 days away, but there has been a store open near my house for a week or so that is selling nothing but Halloween costumes/stuff.

    2) Oakland A's have already used 27 pitchers this year, their most since 1955, their first year in Kansas City. All five pitchers who worked for Oakland last night weren't in the major leagues the day before. It has been a long season.

    1) Cardinals 8, Nationals 5-- Washington is a dead team walking; they blew a 5-3 lead in 8th inning. Manager Matt Williams took a severe beating on social media for how he handled his bullpen in this game.

Iglesias cashing the Under with ease

In Raisel Iglesias's past seven outings, the Under has gone 6-1.

The Cincinnati Reds hurler is scheduled to get the nod Wednesday opposite Jason Hammel and the Chicago Cubs.

At the time of writing, the total for the game was off the board.

Yankees 1B Teixeira to miss two more weeks

New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira is on crutches and will be out of the lineup for at least two more weeks while a bone bruise heals.

Teixeira underwent tests on Tuesday that showed his sore right shin does not have a broken bone but rather a serious bruise.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi expects Teixeira to be back before the end of the regular season. There were 32 games remaining entering Tuesday night.

Red Sox moving Ramirez to first base

Hanley Ramirez's days as an outfielder are over.

If Ramirez plays again this season -- and at this point, that is far from a given -- it would be at his adopted first base, Red Sox interim manager Torey Lovullo announced Tuesday before a 3-1 loss to the Yankees at Fenway Park.

"With how the young kids have been doing in the outfield, I think we want to give them the time there that they deserve," Lovullo said, referring to Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr., and Rusney Castillo. "I think the timing of Hanley's (right shoulder) injury, it's pushing him back a little bit. It's just condensing that ability to go out and play left field until he transitions to first base. Had it been day-to-day, he probably would have had a few moments in left field still.

"I think we're looking a little bit forward today knowing that, maybe in a week, he might come back and could be ready to play first base.

MLB roundup: Another wild Cardinals comeback

ST. LOUIS -- Brandon Moss capped another wild St. Louis Cardinals comeback with his biggest hit since joining them on July 30.

His three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday night lifted them to an 8-5 win over the Washington Nationals.

Pinch-hitter Cody Stanley lashed a two-out double down the left-field line off reliever Casey Janssen (1-4). After center fielder Tommy Pham coaxed a walk, Moss drilled a 1-0 pitch over the center-field wall for his third homer since being acquired from Cleveland.

Reliever Mitch Harris (2-1) pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win as St. Louis (86-46) pushed its National League Central lead to six games over Pittsburgh, a 7-4 loser in Milwaukee.

Washington (66-65) remained 6 1/2 games behind the New York Mets in the NL East as it lost for the 20th time in 22 games at Busch Stadium, dating back to 2008.

          Mariners 7, Astros 5

HOUSTON -- Logan Morrison delivered his third career pinch-hit home run and Carson Smith suppressed yet another Houston rally attempt in Seattle's win at Minute Maid Park.

Morrison snapped a 5-5 deadlock with his two-out, two-run shot to right off Astros right-hander Pat Neshek (3-4) in the eighth inning. The Astros had twice rallied from two-run deficits and appeared set to do so again when left fielder Colby Rasmus opened the eighth with a double to left-center and advanced to third base on a throwing error by Mariners center fielder Brad Miller.

However, Smith recovered in dramatic form, striking out a pair of pinch-hitters, Hank Conger and Luis Valbuena, before punching out Jose Altuve, who was 2-for-3 with a walk heading into his fifth plate appearance.

          Diamondbacks 6, Rockies 4 (Game 2)

DENVER -- Arizona struck for four runs in the seventh to defeat Colorado and sweep their split doubleheader.

Pinch hitter Aaron Hill doubled home two runs and AJ Pollock hit a two-run homer as the Diamondbacks capitalized on spotty relief pitching by Scott Oberg and Jairo Diaz to sweep their second doubleheader this season at Coors Field. The other was on May 6.

The Diamondbacks won the first game 6-4. Phil Gosselin, coming off an 0-for-4 performance in his Arizona debut Monday, hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs while going 2-for-3 with a double and reaching base on all five plate appearances. Patrick Corbin got 11 outs on ground balls as he gave up two runs in 6 1/3 innings in his fifth start for the Diamondbacks since he underwent Tommy John surgery in March 2014.

          Rays 11, Orioles 2

BALTIMORE -- J.P. Arencibia hit a two-run homer and drove in six runs while starter Drew Smyly threw seven shutout innings as Tampa Bay rolled over Baltimore.

The Rays won their third straight game while the Orioles dropped their sixth in a row. Baltimore now has lost 12 out of its last 13 games thanks to a pair of these six-game losing skids.

Arencibia has been in the majors for parts of six seasons but spent most of this year in the minors. On this night, though, the catcher contributed a pair of two-run singles plus the homer, knocking in six of the team's 11 runs with his 3-for-4 effort.

          Yankees 3, Red Sox 1

BOSTON -- Stephen Drew delivered a go-ahead, two-run double in the fifth inning, and New York earned a victory over Boston at Fenway Park.

Drew, whose defense helped lead the Red Sox to a World Series title in 2013, started the season slowly but has the hot bat of late for the Yankees. He is 6-for-8 with four runs and six RBIs his past three games, including a 4-for-4 day Sunday in New York's 20-6 win at Atlanta.

The second baseman went 1-for-3 on a night when Red Sox right-hander Rick Porcello had a career-high 13 strikeouts.

          Blue Jays 5, Indians 3 (10 innings)

TORONTO -- Ryan Goins hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning and Toronto defeated Cleveland.

With his homer against right-hander Bryan Shaw (3-3), Goins extended his career-best hit streak to 11 games.

Yan Gomes tied the game 3-3 with his second homer in the game with one out in the ninth against right-hander Roberto Osuna.

          Marlins 7, Braves 1

ATLANTA -- Rookie Justin Nicolino pitched seven scoreless innings, his fourth consecutive quality start, and Miami notched a win over Atlanta at Turner Field.

Nicolino (3-2) scattered six hits, walked two and struck out three. It matched the seven scoreless innings he threw in his major league debut against Cincinnati on June 20.

The Marlins played some solid defense behind Nicolino, turning three double plays. Miami turned 13 double plays during the 44 innings thrown by the left-hander this season.

          Diamondbacks 6, Rockies 4 (Game 1)

DENVER -- Newcomer Phil Gosselin hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs as Arizona beat Colorado in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.

The Diamondbacks acquired Gosselin from the Braves in late July when he was recovering from surgery on his fractured left thumb. He was reinstated from the 60-day disabled list on Monday and that night went hitless in his Diamondbacks debut.

Gosselin, who went 2-for-3 with two walks and scored twice, doubled home a run in the third inning to give Arizona a 2-1 lead. In the seventh, he belted a three-run homer off Miguel Castro, who was making his Rockies debut.

          Phillies 14, Mets 8

NEW YORK -- Darin Ruf collected a career-high six RBIs, and Philadelphia rode an eight-run sixth inning to a win over New York at Citi Field.

The Phillies won for just the third time in nine games. The Mets had a two-game winning streak snapped.

Ruf, whose previous career high was three RBIs, went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer to cap a five-run third, an RBI single in the fifth and a two-run single in the sixth. Andres Blanco followed Ruf in the sixth with a two-run double and scored on a throwing error by Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada -- the second error of the inning for New York.

          Cubs 5, Reds 4

CHICAGO -- Kyle Schwarber provided the go-ahead runs with a two-run homer in the seventh inning as Chicago rallied past Cincinnati.

The left fielder's 13th homer of the season came on a 3-2 pitch from Reds right-handed reliever Burke Badenhop and drove in Dexter Fowler.

The win was the second in three games for the Cubs while the Reds dropped their second in three games and sixth in eight games.

          Brewers 7, Pirates 4

MILWAUKEE -- Jimmy Nelson allowed one run in seven innings, and Milwaukee got an early jump on right-hander Gerrit Cole in a victory over Pittsburgh at Miller Park.

Nelson (11-10) won for the sixth time in his past nine starts, scattering four hits while striking out six and issuing no walks.

Meanwhile, Cole (15-8) couldn't get going against the Brewers, who tagged him for a career-high five runs on eight hits and a walk with two strikeouts in a career-low four innings.

          Twins 8, White Sox 6

MINNEAPOLIS -- Eduardo Escobar had three hits as Minnesota scored three eighth-inning runs to erase a late deficit in a win over Chicago at Target Field.

Minnesota led 4-0 in the early going then coughed up that lead in the middle innings, eventually ceding the lead on a two-run homer by Chicago's Avisail Garcia in the sixth inning.

But Miguel Sano hit a solo homer to tie the score with two outs in the seventh before Escobar's double sparked a three-run rally, lifting Minnesota to its ninth win in its last 11 games.

          Tigers 6, Royals 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Ian Kinsler drove in three runs, and Justin Verlander pitched impressively into the seventh inning in Detroit's triumph over division-leading Kansas City.

Kinsler, who batted .362 with 18 RBIs in August, hit a two-run homer in the seventh off right-hander Miguel Almonte, who was just called up from Triple-A Omaha. The second baseman was the second batter Almonte faced in the majors.

Verlander, who threw a one-hit shutout against the Los Angeles Angels in his previous start for the Tigers' lone win in their past 10 games, stymied the Royals on seven hits, struck out four and walked one. Only two of the four runs off the right-hander were earned.

          Dodgers 2, Giants 1

LOS ANGELES -- Joc Pederson homered and Zack Greinke delivered another solid outing, leading Los Angeles to a victory over San Francisco before 48,060 at Dodger Stadium.

Greinke (15-3) allowed a run on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk in 7 1/3 innings. He is 7-0 in nine career starts against San Francisco.

Closer Kenley Jansen worked a perfect ninth for his 28th save in 30 chances as the National League West-leading Dodgers increased their lead to 5 1/2 games over the Giants.

          Angels 6, A's 2

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Right-hander Matt Shoemaker pitched seven strong innings, Kole Calhoun hit his 21st home run, and Los Angeles snapped its four-game losing streak with a victory over Oakland at the O.co Coliseum.

Shoemaker (7-9) allowed one run on five hits, struck out five and walked two. He won his second straight start since being recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake, where he lost his lone outing. In his previous start, Shoemaker threw 7 1/3 shutout innings in a 2-0 victory at Detroit.

Calhoun went 3-for-5, drove in two runs and scored twice as the Angels got back to .500. Leading off the seventh inning, Calhoun launched a solo shot off A's reliever Dan Otero into the right-field seats, extending the Angels' lead to 6-1.

          Rangers 8, Padres 6

SAN DIEGO -- Elvis Andrus' seventh-inning single broke a tie and lifted Texas past San Diego.

The Rangers scored three runs on Andrus' hit, which followed singles by Prince Fielder and Adrian Beltre and an intentional walk to Rougned Odor by reliever Shawn Kelley.

Right fielder Matt Kemp's throw to the plate on Andrus' single was in time to erase Beltre, but Beltre kicked the ball from catcher Derek Norris' glove for an error. That let Beltre and Odor score, with Andrus advancing to third. Norris left the game with an apparent left wrist injury.

Andrus then stole home off Kevin Quackenbush for Texas' fourth run of the inning.

                  Hitters wind in Oakland Wednesday

Hitters will take any edge they can get at the O.co Coliseum in Oakland and they could have one Wednesday with a slight hitters wind in the forecast.

There will be an 11 mile per hour wind gusting out to left center field for today's contest between the A's and the visiting Los Angeles Angels.

Oakland will send ace Sonny Gray (2.13 ERA, 12-10 O/U) to the mound, while the Angels will counter with lefty Andrew Heaney (3.11 ERA, 6-6 O/U). The A's are currently -146 favorites with a total sitting at 7.0.

A's contests are high scoring affairs

The over is a hot 8-1-1 in the Oakland Athletics last 10 games thanks to a combined 10.7 runs scored per game in those 10 contests.

Over backers hope the hot trend continues when the A's and Sonny Gray (2.13 ERA, 12-10 O/U) host Andrew Heaney (3.11 ERA, 6-6 O/U) and the Los Angeles Angels Wednesday afternoon.

The total currently sits at 7.0 runs.

Braves hope to end home losing streak

The Atlanta Braves will hope to bring an end to their current seven game home losing streak when they close out a series with the Miami Marlins Wednesday afternoon.

The Braves have been outscored by a whopping 60-16 in those seven games and appear to be just phoning it in until the season is over, losing 1-14 in their last 15 games.

Atlanta sends Williams Perez (5.56 ERA, 8-5 O/U) to the hill to try and stop the bleeding, while Adam Conley (4.96 ERA, 3-1 O/U) gets the call for the Marlins. The Braves have opened at -105.

Game of the Day: Nationals at Cardinals
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cardinals starter Michael Wacha has recorded a quality start in his seven previous outings.

Washington Nationals at St. Louis Cardinals (-121, 6.5)

The St. Louis Cardinals are seemingly unstoppable entering the stretch run of the regular season, and are making a habit of hurting other teams’ chances of getting a shot at them in the postseason. The Cardinals aim for their fifth straight victory and a three-game sweep of the visiting Washington Nationals on Wednesday.

After taking two of three from wild-card contender San Francisco last weekend, the Cardinals have damaged Washington’s slim playoff hopes with two straight wins, including a stunning 8-5 comeback victory Tuesday. St. Louis scored twice in the eighth to tie it and won it on Brandon Moss’ walk-off homer to move 40 games above .500. Washington ace Max Scherzer, a St. Louis native, looks to snap a five-start winless streak when he makes his second big-league start in his hometown and his first since a loss in 2008. Cardinals right-hander Michael Wacha looks to continue his breakout season when he tries to become the fourth pitcher with at least 16 wins in the majors this season.

                    TV:
8:15 p.m. ET, ESPN, MASN 2 (Washington), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

                    LINE HISTORY:
The Cardinals have been bet from their opening number of -114 to currently sit at -121. The total has held steady at 6.5.

                    INJURY REPORT:

Nationals - SP S. Strasburgh (questionable Friday, back), 1B T. Moore (15-day DL, ankle), RP A. Barrett (15-day DL, elbow), CF D. Span (out for season, hip).

Cardinals - SP C. Martinez (day-to-day, back), SP L. Lynn (questionable Friday, ankle), 1B M. Reynolds (doubtful Wednesday, wrist), CF (15-day DL, wrist), LF M. Holliday (15-day DL, quad), RP M. Harris (15-day DL, groin), 1B M. Adams (early September, quad), CF R. Grichuk (early September, elbow).

                    WEATHER REPORT:
It should be a clear night at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, wit a temperatures in the mid 80s and a very slight four imle per hour wind blowing out to left field.

                    UMPIRE REPORT:
John Tumpane will be the man calling balls and strikes in tonight's game. Tumpane is an under umpire, with the under going 16-5-2 when he is behind the plate and has a strike percentage of 63.87. He is also a homer ump, with home teams going 15-8.

                    WHAT CAPPERS SAY:
"After a monster start to the season, Max Scherzer has tailed off, just 2-6 with a 5.22 ERA his last eight overall team starts. Surprisingly he is also winless, 0-3, this season as an underdog. On the flip side Wacha enters 5-1 with a 0.92 ERA his last six team starts. Better team and better current form arm, points us in the Cardinals direction tonight."

                    PITCHING MATCHUP:
Nationals RH Max Scherzer (11-11, 2.88 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (15-4, 2.69)

Scherzer turns the page on a tough month of August in which he was 0-3 with a 6.43 ERA in five starts. He has lost his last three turns, including a 4-3 defeat against Miami last time out in which he allowed four runs over seven frames. The 31-year-old is 0-2 with a 3.71 ERA in three starts against the Cardinals, including a tough-luck loss April 23 in which he gave up two runs in seven frames.

Wacha has won four straight decisions and posted seven consecutive quality starts. The 24-year-old Texan was hurt by his defense in his last outing, as he allowed four runs - all unearned - in six innings in a no-decision at San Francisco. Wacha beat the Nationals on April 23, holding them to one run and five hits over seven innings to improve to 2-1 with a 0.79 ERA in three meetings.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Nationals are 2-9 in their last 11 road games.
                    * Cardinals are 6-0 in Wacha's last six home starts with a total set at 6.5 or lower.
                    * Over is 4-0 in the Nationals last four road games vs. a right-handed starter.
                    * Under is 5-0 in Wacha's last five home starts.

                    CONSENSUS:
A whopping 73.49 percent of the public is backing the Cardinals at 121.
