    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Tigers' payroll this year is $172,792,250; not money well-spent.

-- Dodgers' payroll went up another $300K last night, when Brett Anderson went over 150 innings for the season.

-- Matt Kemp is making $21,250,000 this year; Dodgers are paying $18M of it.

-- Steelers have already lost two kickers; they'll need to sign a third with Garrett Hartley pulling a leg muscle last week..

-- Saskatchewan Roughriders are 0-9; they fired their coach and GM Monday, with the CFL season half over, but they're favored this week-- how bad is Winnipeg?

-- Marlins' payroll is $69,031,500; they're getting $22.5M from other teams to help pay it. Taxpayers in Miami got cheated when they built Jeffrey Loria a stadium.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

    13) Definition of a bad day: Someone on Twitter was saying that a buddy of his was going to win the semi-final game in his fantasy baseball league last week-- the only way he could lose was if Jake Arrieta threw a no-hitter Sunday night. Oy.

    12) Buffalo Bills named Tyrod Taylor their starting QB; in his four years as Ravens' (mainly) #3 QB, Taylor never started a game, completing 19-35 passes for 199 yards in 14 games. He can run, gaining 136 yards on 27 carries. We shall see; he has been around the NFL for 4+ years now; that has to help some.

    11) Then there is Tampa Bay thrusting Jameis Winston into the starting spot right off the bat; last year, Winston threw 18 INTs-- Florida State turned the ball over more than every team in America, except New Mexico State. Think about that; Florida State has more talent than almost every team they play, yet they were -6 in turnovers, and now Winston is playing in the NFL behind an OL starting two rookies.

I hope they're patient with Mr Winston; its going to take some time.

    9) In his first ten games with the Giants, Marlon Byrd has 17 RBI.

    8) Outfielders acquired at the deadline last night-- in order to be eligible for the playoffs, guys had to be with a team before September 1:
-- Braves traded Jonny Gomes to the Royals.
-- Boston traded Alejandro de Aza to the Giants.
-- Mariners traded Justin Ruggiano to the Dodgers
-- Mariners also traded Austin Jackson, but to the Cubs.

    7) Before the sixth inning last night, Dodgers had gone 47 innings without a HR.

    6) It is funny to me that catchers aren't supposed to bitch at umps while they're at bat, since they want those same pitches called strikes when they're behind the plate. Am guessing some interesting discussions happen when the catchers get back behind the plate after being called out on strikes.

    5) As I type this I'm flipping between the A's game and an episode of Law and Order; the judge in this episode is Billie Jean King, the tennis star, whose half-brother was a guy named Randy Moffitt, a pretty good relief pitcher in the 70's (96 saves), mostly for the Giants.

    4) Mike Trout is a big fan of meteorology; there are rumors he may do some work for the Weather Channel at some point.

    3) Dennis Eckersley came right out and said it before the Red Sox game last night: he doesn't think Hanley Ramirez can become a first baseman. We'll see.

    2) Lakers signed a 32-year old Brazilian point guard named Marcelinho Huertas, who is regarded as one of Euroleague's best playmakers.

    1) Since 1999, Washington Redskins have had eight coaches, 16 starting QBs.

MLB roundup: Dodgers increase division lead with 14-inning win

LOS ANGELES -- First baseman Adrian Gonzalez hit a walk-off single, lifting the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 5-4 victory in 14 innings over the San Francisco Giants at Dodger Stadium on Monday night.

Reliever Chris Hatcher (2-5) worked three scoreless innings for the National League West-leading Dodgers (73-57), who increased their lead to 4 1/2 games over the Giants, who had won nine of the previous 12 meetings between the clubs.

Giants reliever Mike Broadway (0-1) suffered the defeat.

Catcher A.J. Ellis opened the 14th with a walk. Shortstop Jimmy Rollins followed and second baseman Chase Utley followed with singles before Gonzalez lined a base hit to left to end the marathon.

Giants right fielder Marlon Byrd's RBI double with two outs in the eighth knotted the score at 4.

      Indians 4, Blue Jays 2

TORONTO -- Jerry Sands singled in the go-ahead run with two outs in the seventh, Danny Salazar pitched seven innings and Cleveland defeated Toronto.

The victory in the opener of the three-game series gave Cleveland a six-game winning streak, and the Blue Jays had their winning streak end at three games. The Blue Jays finished August with a 21-6 record.

Salazar (12-7), the Indians right-hander, struck out 10 and held the Blue Jays to six hits, one walk and two runs. Blue Jays left-hander David Price (13-5) allowed six hits, one walk and three runs in seven innings to take his first loss in six starts with the Blue Jays.

      Mets 3, Phillies 1

NEW YORK -- Right-handed pitcher Bartolo Colon threw eight shutout innings and singled and scored during a three-run fifth inning that lifted New York to a win over Philadelphia at Citi Field.

The Mets won their second straight to ensure they would remain at least 5 1/2 games ahead of Washington in the National League East.

The Phillies have lost six of their last eight.

      Marlins 4, Braves 0

ATLANTA -- Miami made sure Shelby Miller's winless streak continued. Cole Gillespie homered off the Atlanta right-hander in the second inning, and the Marlins added three runs against the Braves bullpen for a shutout victory behind left-hander Chris Narveson.

Narveson, making just his second start for Miami, allowed only two hits and two walks as the Marlins handed Miller (5-12) his 11th straight loss.

      Rays 6, Orioles 3

BALTIMORE -- Asdrubal Cabrera, Evan Longoria and Tim Beckham all homered while starter Chris Archer threw six shutout innings as Tampa Bay scored a victory over Baltimore.

The Rays have won two straight games while the slumping Orioles slid to a fifth straight loss. They have also lost 11 of their last 12, and Baltimore's scoreless streak stretched to 19 innings before it finally broke through with three runs in the seventh.

Tampa Bay got lots of offensive help to support Archer (12-10), who needed 113 pitches to get through six innings. The right-hander allowed four hits but escaped trouble in three different frames.

      Red Sox 4, Yankees 3

BOSTON -- David Ortiz inched closer to the 500-home run club with his 495th career homer and Mookie Betts added a two-run blast as Boston squeaked past rival New York in the opener of a three-game series at Fenway Park.

The designated hitter now has three homers in four games and 29 in 2015 while the young center fielder increased his season total to 13 as Boston ended the month on a high note. The last-place Red Sox went 15-12 in August, only their second winning month of the season.

Ortiz and Betts each had two hits and Jackie Bradley Jr. was 3-for-3. Eduardo Rodriguez (8-5) took the win in a brief five-inning outing, as the Red Sox left-hander allowed just two runs -- one earned -- on seven hits and three walks while striking out four.

      Astros 8, Mariners 3

HOUSTON -- Left-hander Dallas Keuchel matched the club record for consecutive home wins and received ample run support as Houston beat Seattle at Minute Maid Park.

Keuchel (16-6) leads the American League in victories after allowing one run on six hits and one walk with eight strikeouts over seven innings. He earned his 13th consecutive win in Houston, a streak that dates to last season and matches one by Danny Darwin.

Jed Lowrie, Hank Conger and Carlos Correa all homered off Mariners left-hander Vidal Nuno (0-2) to support Keuchel and help Houston clinch the season series over the Mariners.

      Cardinals 8, Nationals 5

ST. LOUIS -- Scoring five two-out runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, St. Louis administered a potentially crushing loss to Washington at Busch Stadium.

It was the eighth win in nine games for the Cardinals, who have averaged 6.3 runs in this latest stretch of success. They entered the game scoring just over four runs per contest.

Jason Heyward delivered the game's key hit, a two-run double off reliever Felipe Rivero that went over the head of left fielder Jayson Werth and snapped a 5-5 tie. It was preceded by two-strike RBI singles from Stephen Piscotty and Jhonny Peralta off reliever Casey Janssen (1-3).

      Reds 13, Cubs 6

CHICAGO -- Pinch hitter Adam Duvall slugged a go-ahead home run in his first Cincinnati at-bat in a victory over Chicago. Duvall, called up from Triple-A Louisville earlier in the day, capped a four-run sixth with a two-run shot to left that also scored Tucker Barnhart and snapped a 5-5 tie.

The Reds have now won two of their last three. The Cubs have dropped five of their last six.

Cincinnati right-handed reliever Ryan Mattheus (2-4) pitched one-third of an inning for the win. Left hander Aroldis Chapman worked 1 2/3 innings for his 26th save.

      Rockies 5, Diamondbacks 4

DENVER -- Pinch hitter Ben Paulsen's two-run single capped the Rockies' four-run ninth inning, and Colorado rallied to beat Arizona. Paulsen delivered on an 0-2 pitch from Matt Reynolds for his second career walk-off hit.

Diamondbacks closer Brad Ziegler entered with 22 consecutive saves, but he couldn't add to his streak.

The Rockies were 0-for-15 with runners in scoring position before Nolan Arenado lined a Ziegler pitch for a two-run single off the top of the left-field wall with one out in the ninth. The hit cut Arizona's lead to 4-3.

      Padres 7, Rangers 0

SAN DIEGO -- Tyson Ross pitched seven shutout innings as San Diego blanked Texas.

Ross (10-9) allowed three hits, struck out seven, issued two walks and a hit batter to snap Texas' four-game winning streak.

The Padres won for the third time in eight games, and Ross won for fourth time in his Past five decisions.

Bud Norris didn't surrender a hit while pitching the final two innings for the Padres.

      Athletics 11, Angels 5

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Rookie Mark Canha had a three-run homer and four RBIs, and Danny Valencia drove in three runs with a pair of doubles, powering Oakland past slumping Los Angeles at the O.co Coliseum.

Oakland won its third straight game and sent the Angels to their fourth straight defeat and ninth loss in 11 games. The Angels fell below .500 for the first time since June 10 when they were 29-30. They remained 3 1/2 games behind Texas for the second wild-card spot in the American League.

A's left-hander Felix Doubront (2-1) gave up four runs on seven hits over six innings, earning his first win since being traded by Toronto to the A's on July 31. He struck out five and walked four in his third start and fifth appearance for Oakland. Doubront was hit in the right foot by a comebacker in his previous start on Aug. 24 at Seattle and left after two innings. He missed his scheduled start Saturday.

Game of the Day: Yankees at Red Sox
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

David Ortiz hit his 495th career home run Monday and will try to move closer to No. 500 Tuesday against the Yankees.

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox (+111, 9.0)

Reduced to playing spoiler for the remainder of the season, the Boston Red Sox are in the midst of one of their best stretches of the season with their most bitter rival in town. The Red Sox closed out August by winning nine of their last 13 games and look to make it two straight victories over the visiting New York Yankees when the three-game series resumes Tuesday night.

Boston designated hitter David Ortiz is closing in on 500 career homers, needing five to reach the milestone after going 6-for-11 with three blasts over the past four games. Jackie Bradley Jr. collected three more hits in Monday's 4-3 victory and is 26-for-61 with 20 runs scored in his last 19 games to raise his batting average from a feeble .121 to .277. The Yankees remain 1 1/2 games behind first-place Toronto in the American League East after stranding 14 runners Monday while seeing their three-game winning streak halted. Shortstop Didi Gregorius owns five-game hitting and RBI streaks during a torrid stretch in which he is 13-for-21 while homering twice and driving in 11 runs.

7:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, YES (New York), NESN (Boston)

                  LINE HISTORY:
The Red Sox have held steady at their opening number of +111. The total has opened at 9.0 runs.

                  INJURY REPORT:

Yankees - 1B M. Teixeira (questionable Tuesday, leg), LF D. Ackley (15-day DL, back), SP C.C. Sabathia (15-day DL, knee), RP D. Moreno (60-day DL, elbow), SP C. Whitley (60-day DL, elbow).

Red Sox - LF H. Ramirez (questionable Tuesday, shoulder), SP S. Wright (15-day DL, concussion), 2B D. Pedroia (Mid September, hamstring), SP B. Workman (60-day DL, elbow).

                  WEATHER REPORT:
It should be a clear night in Boston, with a slight six mile per hour wind blowing out towards the Green Monster.

                  UMPIRE REPORT:
Ron Kulpa will be the man calling balls and strikes in tonight's contest. Kulpa is one of the better homer umps this season with home teams going 16-8 in his 24 games behind home plate. The over/under is 11-12-1 in those games and he has a strike percentage of 64.88.

                  PITCHING MATCHUP:
Yankees RH Michael Pineda (9-8, 4.19 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Rick Porcello (6-11, 5.47)

Pineda's struggles continued in his first start coming off the 15-day disabled list, lasting only 4 1/3 innings and giving up five runs on six hits in a 6-2 loss to Houston. Pineda has dropped his last three starts while getting knocked around for 14 runs and has only one win in his last seven turns - at Boston on July 10. He continues to be susceptible to the long ball, permitting at least one homer in four straight outings.

Porcello turned in an outstanding effort in his return from the disabled list, tossing seven scoreless innings of five-hit ball to defeat the Chicago White Sox. It marked only the second win since May 16 for Porcello, who wobbled through a 12-start stretch by going 1-9 before he was placed on the DL. Porcello is 4-3 with a 3.90 ERA against the Yankees, but has been tormented by Jacoby Ellsbury, who is 11-for-17 with four homers.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Yankees are 9-3 in the last 12 meetings in Boston.
                  * Yankees are 8-3 in the last 11 meetings overall.
                  * Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings in Boston.
                  * Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings overall.

                  CONSENSUS:
The majority of the public is backing the Bronx Bombers, with 68.84 percent of wagers on the Yankees at -120.

                    Tuesday, September 1

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                    September Good Month/Bad Month Pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Francisco is 17-9 in Bumgarner's starts, with a +5.00 unit mark when the big game left-hander takes the ball.

Like the notches in our belt after a tasty Labor Day barbeque, MLB rosters have expanded to accommodate September, the final month of the season. And as College Football and the NFL crash onto the scene, MLB pitchers take the final spotlight in hopes of leading their teams on to the playoff trail. The question is which ones can we count on and which ones figure to be candidates for offseason Weight Watchers meetings? Check it out.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team starts the last three seasons during the month of September. On the flip side, we’ve also listed pitchers that struggle in September team starts, winning 33 percent or less of their efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each September over the last three years.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s September’s list.

                    GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

                    *Bumgarner, Madison • 9-4 (4-1 H)

Might not have the lowest ERA, but enters this month with a 16-6 record, with San Francisco 17-9 in his starts, with a +5.00 unit mark when the big game left-hander takes the ball.

                    Cueto, Johnny • 9-4 (6-2 H)

Surprisingly, has not been all that effective with Kansas City. No real concerns, but no doubt manager Ned Yost wants to make certain Cueto is straightened out before heading in October.

                    *Fister, Doug • 11-4 (5-1 H)

For the most part has pitched poorly all season and was moved to the bullpen in August, where he has remained and is likely to stay for the disappointing Nationals.

                    *Gonzalez, Gio • 11-4 (5-1 H)

If Washington is to have any chance to catch New York, the Nats left-hander has to turn things around in a hurry, after surrendering 14 earned runs in only 12 1/3 innings over past three starts. Allowing hitters to bats .285 against him compared to .238 for career.

                    *Greinke, Zack • 13-4 (7-2 H)

Still the NL favorite for the Cy Young with a 1.61 ERA, WHIP of 0.85 and foes batting .189 against him. Masterful control a huge key with a 5-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio. Dodgers will need him to win NL West.

                    *Guthrie, Jeremy • 11-4 (7-1 H)

Having a tough season with an ERA over 5.50 in 23 starts and was moved to the bullpen in late August. The Royals could use another reliable starter for the postseason and are hopeful Guthrie figures it out.

                    *Hughes, Phil • 10-5 (6-2 A)

Went on DL in mid-August with back injury and the recovery has been slow. Earliest possible return is mid-September and effectiveness will really be a question.

                    Jimenez, Ubaldo • 9-3 (6-0 H)

You take the good and bad with this right-hander and he finished last month like Baltimore, plummeting. Chances of turnaround seem slim, but Jimenez unpredictable nature makes him 50-50 to duplicate past September's.

                    *Kennedy, Ian • 12-3 (8-1 H)

Had a 2.30 ERA for the month of August but like Padres, Kennedy remains inconsistent, which has largely been the path of his career.

                    Kershaw, Clayton • 9-4 (5-2 A)

Teammate Greinke might be having a better year, but Kershaw has an ERA under 1.00 over last 10 starts (think about that). As mentioned with Greinke, Los Angeles needs brilliance from their lefty to continue and win division. Chances are if Kershaw averages 10 K's per start the rest of season, he will be first 300-strikeout pitcher in 13 years.

                    *Latos, Mat • 8-4 (6-2 H)

Has struggled since donning a Dodger uniform and shows few signs of turning around. Not close to the same pitcher he was San Diego.

                    *Norris, Bud • 8-4 (5-2 H)

Was released by Baltimore in early August and is pitching out of the bullpen for San Diego.

                    Price, David • 12-5 (9-3 A)

Been a reliable starter for Toronto and his work ethic and leadership seem to have spread throughout the entire pitching staff. Not as hard a thrower as he used to be, but knows how to pitch and numbers this season are aligned with career figures.

                    *Scherzer, Max • 11-4 (6-1 H)

After arguably being the best pitcher in the majors the first three months of the season, Scherzer is coming off August in which he had a 6.43 ERA. Washington has no shot unless their ace regains prior form.

                    *Shields, James • 14-3 (7-1 H)

Shields has been more up and down, leaving pitchers up in the zone which is why home runs are up. Still a good No. 2 or 3 pitcher on any staff and might well finish strong for the Padres.

                    Zimmermann, Jordan • 14-2 (7-1 H)

Zimmermann, like all the Washington starting pitchers, has to come up monstrous the rest of the season and hope the offense can come through. As stated previously here, his win totals never match what kind of ability he seems to have.

                    BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

                    Burnett, A.J. • 5-11 (1-6 H)

Pittsburgh is targeting the Sept. 15-17 series against the Cubs as a potential return date for Burnett (elbow), the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. The retiring righty was having outstanding year before elbow issues.

                    Eovaldi, Nate • 5-10 (2-5 A)

Enters August 14-2, but pitched into great luck and run support, sporting a 4.17 ERA and teams hitting .285 against his tosses. Let's see how reacts to pennant pressure this month.

                    Feldman, Scott • 3-10 (1-5 H)

Has been amazingly effective since rejoining the Astros rotation on July 18th and lowering his ERA over a run (4.93 vs. 3.75). Still allows more than a hit an inning but been solid with runners on base.

                    Happ, J. A. • 4-8 (1-3 A)

Has done what has been asked of him since being acquired from Seattle by Pittsburgh. His goal: pitch five to six innings, help the Pirates stay in the game and let the rest of the players shape the outcome. Could be lit up any time.

                    Hellickson, Jeremy • 4-10 (1-5 A)

Went on DL on Aug. 20th with a bad hamstring and there is no clear-cut date for return to Diamondbacks. A typical 9-8 season for Hellickson with ERA over 4.

                    Porcello, Rick • 4-9 (1-5 A)

Had good outing after coming off DL in late August, but still on track for worst season in big league career, with ERA more than one run higher than past performances.

                    Sale, Chris • 5-10 (1-7 A)

At times this season, thrown like a taller version of Kershaw and is another hurler with a chance at 300 K's for season. Will look to continue to rise above playing for mediocre White Sox squad.

                    Samardzija, Jeff • 3-8 (1-5 A)

Has not pitched well since being traded by the Cubs a year ago and probably needs fantastic rest of the year to recoup some of the money he's lost in becoming a free agent after season. Do not like his chances at improvement.

                    Vogelsong, Ryan • 5-10 (2-6 A)

Was pulled from the rotation in July and only back in for San Francisco because of Matt Cain's sore elbow. Starts this month having lasted past five innings in just one start out of past five.

                    Volquez, Edinson • 5-10 (1-6 A)

Has been more than Kansas City could have hoped for, having a second straight strong campaign. Volquez will try and maintain the status quo and try and be a factor in the playoffs.

Indians go for seventh win in a row

It may be a little too late, but the Cleveland Indians are heating up and are going for their seventh consecutive win Tuesday night when they visit the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Tribe's streak has been fueled by a resurgent offense that has seen them outscore their opponents 41-16 during the six-game winning streak.

Cleveland faces long odds once again against the hot Blue Jays, currently listed at +181 road dogs and send Cody Anderson (2-3, 4.30 ERA) to the mound, while the Jays counter with Marco Estrada (11-8, 3.19 ERA).
