            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: Giants at Dodgers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jake Peavy is 14-3 with a 2.30 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 27 career starts against Los Angeles.

San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers (-145, 7.5)

Jake Peavy looks to continue his long-standing dominance against Los Angeles when the San Francisco Giants visit the Dodgers in Monday's opener of a three-game series. The right-hander is 14-3 with a 2.30 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 27 career starts against Los Angeles.

Peavy will try to tame a Dodgers' lineup that has been no-hit twice in the last nine games after Jake Arrieta of the Chicago Cubs held Los Angeles hitless on Sunday. Arrieta's masterpiece halted the Dodgers' five-game winning streak and kept Los Angeles' National League West lead at 3 1/2 games over the Giants. Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez is mired in a 12-game homerless drought but has gone deep three times against San Francisco this season. Giants outfielder Marlon Byrd had two doubles, one triple and four RBIs in Sunday's 7-5 loss to St. Louis and has driven in 11 runs in the last four games.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

LINE HISTORY: The Dodgers opened around -135 but are now -153. The total total opened at 7.5.

INJURY REPORT: Giants - SS Brandon Crawford (Doubtful, back), CF Angel Pagan (Probable Tuesday, knee), RF Hunter Pence (15-day DL, oblique), 2B Joe Panik (15-day DL, back). Dodgers - LF Enrique Hernandez (Questionable, hamstring), RF Yaiel Puig (15-day DL, hamstring).

WEATHER: Temperatures are expected to be in the low-70s under clear skies. Wind will blow out to right field at around eight miles per hour.

WHAT CAPPERS SAY: "Madison Bumgarner notwithstanding, the Giants' starting rotation - normally a strength - is in a bit of trouble. Veteran RH Matt Cain went on the DL (again) for a nerve issue and Ryan Vogelsong continues to get roughed up. Could San Francisco all of a sudden be an option for James Shields? Somebody please tell the Dodgers to wake up and look at their dismal relief pitching before it's too late. Two of the relievers who were available a week ago are now gone as Fernando Rodney was traded to the Cubs, while Addison Reed went to the Mets. What is Mattingly & Co. waiting for?"

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Jake Peavy (4-6, 4.21 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Brett Anderson (8-8, 3.36)

Peavy defeated the Cubs in his last turn when he gave up two runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. He has pitched at least six innings in eight of 10 starts since returning from a back injury and has served up just two homers over his last six turns. Peavy hasn't faced the Dodgers yet this season but has always controlled outfielder Andre Ethier (5-for-35).

Anderson beat Cincinnati in his last outing when he gave up three unearned runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings. He has allowed three or fewer earned runs in 12 of his last 13 starts and has issued two or fewer walks in 11 of his past 12 turns. Anderson is 1-2 with a 4.71 ERA in four 2015 starts against San Francisco and is 1-4 with a 4.91 ERA in seven career outings.

            TRENDS:

            * Giants are 5-1 in the last six meetings.
            * Giants are 2-9 in their last 11 road games.
            * Dodgers are 7-1 in Andersons last eight starts with four days of rest.
            * Under is 4-0 in Dodgers last four overall.

CONSENSUS: Sixty-three percent of users are backing the Dodgers.

                Monday, August 31

Wind blowing out to short porch at Fenway Park

According to weather forecasts, wind will blow out to right field at around 11 miles per hour when the Boston Red Sox host the New York Yankees at Fenway Park Monday evening.

Our MLB Stadiums data for Fenway Park shows that the Over has gone 5-2 in seven games when wind blows out to right field this season.

Ivan Nova is scheduled to make the start for the Yanks, while Eduardo Rodriguez is expected to get the ball for the Red Sox. Oddsmakers opened the total at 9, but that has since moved up to 9.5.

Favorites dominate on the diamond Sunday

Favorites had a big day on the diamond Sunday, recording 12 wins in the 15 Major League Baseball games on the schedule. That clip was good enough to cash at a rate of 80 percent and if you'd blindly bet $100 on faves in all 15 games, you'd be up 5.57 units.

The only underdogs to cash were the Colorado Rockies, Minnesota Twins and Oakland A's.

Season to date, favorites are now 1109-817 straight up with home favorites 783-544.

-- The Braves are 0-10 since Jul 29, 2015 after a loss in which they had a higher team-left-on-base than their opponent.

                    Monday's Tip Sheet

                    August 31, 2015

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox | 7:10 p.m. ET (ESPN)

For this week’s edition of ESPN Monday Night Baseball, we find yet another clash involving the Yankees and Red Sox featured on national television. Usually, these late-season matchups showcasing baseball’s most storied rivalry are worthy of the upmost headlines, but that’s not really the case this year with the Red Sox mired in a lost season. The Yankees, of course, find themselves on the other end of the spectrum, as they appear to be playoff-bound for the first time since 2012. They’d rather enter the postseason as the division champs, however, and are currently 1.5 games behind the relentlessly surging Toronto Blue Jays for first-place in the AL East.

Ivan Nova (5-6, 4.50 ERA) gets the ball in the series opener for the Yanks, looking to bounce back from his own misfortunes. In fact, Nova endured his worst start of the year his last time out, when the Astros tagged him for a season-high seven runs in just four innings of work, which also clocked in as his shortest outing of the campaign. The Red Sox will try and capitalize on that behind rookie starter Eduardo Rodriguez (7-5, 4.39 ERA), who seems to be building a little momentum as of late. Other than a disastrous outing against the Marlins a few weeks ago, Rodriguez has been excellent over the past month-and-change. He’s surrendered three earned runs or less in five of his past six starts, including three runs combined in his past two assignments, spanning 14 innings. These two pitchers met back in mid-July -- at Fenway Park, where tonight’s affair emanates from -- and the Red Sox were the victors in that one. That might be why both teams are an even -110 in most shops.

Washington Nationals at St. Louis Cardinals | 8:15 p.m. ET

At one point, this series between the Nationals and Cardinals looked like a surefire playoff preview -- if not perhaps a potential showdown in the NLCS -- but instead, one of these teams might not even crack the postseason despite being heavy favorites to win their division prior to Opening Day. That would be the team located in our nation’s capital, who currently sits 5.5 games behind the first-place New York Mets in the NL East. The Nationals are starting to regain some steam, though, having won six of their last eight, a streak they can only hope continues throughout what should be a challenging series with the team that owns baseball’s best record. They’ll lean on veteran southpaw Gio Gonzalez (9-7, 4.11 ERA) to kick it off right, though the 29-year-old has been struggling as of late. For the first time since early last year, Gonzalez has surrendered four runs or more in three consecutive starts, and he just hasn’t been as good since the All-Star break overall, owning a 4.39 ERA and 1.59 WHIP in his eight starts following the Midsummer Classic. The over has hit in each of Gonzalez’ last five outings and the linesmakers have set the over/under for this series opener at 7.

Meanwhile, the MLB-best Cardinals seem like one of the few locks at this point to advance into the postseason, but even they aren’t in the most comfortable of positions, with the surging Pirates and Cubs breathing down their necks for first-place. To continue their efforts of staving off those two other playoff-bound clubs, John Lackey (11-8, 2.92 ERA) will toe the rubber to begin this series for St. Louis. The veteran right-hander has been notably consistent for the Cards this season, having logged five innings or more in all but one of his 26 starts this season, and he’s been especially stingy as of late, with 13 quality starts in his past 14 tries. As a result, he finds himself as a home favorite tonight with -140 odds.

San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers | 10:10 p.m. ET (MLB Network)

Many people, especially on the west coast, would argue that this is the most storied and intense rivalry in all of baseball. At the very least, it’s been the most competitive as far as the 2015 season has gone, with both teams neck-and-neck for first-place in the NL West all season long. Entering the final day of August, it is the Dodgers who are up atop the division, having a 3.5-game lead over the rival Giants, and will look to expand on that beginning tonight with left-hander Brett Anderson (8-8, 3.36 ERA) taking the hill. As detailed before, Anderson has been a godsend for the club in his first year donning Dodger blue, while Los Angeles has struggled to find depth within the rest of the rotation behind Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke. Anderson was a risky offseason signing for the Dodgers due to his injury history, but has been a very steady presence in that No. 3 slot, having made 25 starts this season, and he’s impressively allowed three earned runs or less in all but three of them. The 31-year-old has made four starts opposing the defending champs this season, but has only produced lackluster results in those matchups, being 1-2 with a 4.71 ERA and 1.57 WHIP.

Meanwhile, the Giants will hope the success of Jake Peavy (4-6, 4.21 ERA) against the Dodgers throughout his career is a trend that will pick up this evening, as last year’s World Series Champions continue to fight for their playoff lives. Peavy hasn’t faced LA in 2015 since he’s been limited to just 12 starts on the year, but has been dazzling when matching up against the Dodgers. In fact, he’s faced them 27 times and has a very nice 14-3 record to show for it, while compiling an impressive 2.30 ERA and 0.96 WHIP, not to mention a .200 BAA. That being known, he might be a tempting +130/+140 road ’dog for tonight’s series opener. As for the over/under, considering the Dodgers are 37-25 at home for ‘over’ bets, while the Giants are 37-22 for overs on the road, this could be a prevailing theme throughout the series. The over/under in this one is 7.5.

Texas Rangers at San Diego Padres | 10:10 p.m. ET (MLB Network)

Most of the country will be getting the latest installment of the Giants-Dodgers rivalry on MLB Network tonight; the rest will be getting this intriguing series opener between the Rangers and Padres. Of course, if you’ve been keeping up with the competitive jumbled-up American League Wild Card race, you’d note that the Rangers sneakily took over the second spot recently and haven’t let up since, maintaining a 1.5-game lead over the Twins. Their team-leader in wins, veteran Colby Lewis (14-6, 4.38 ERA), gets the nod this evening, and will be looking for his career-high 15th victory. Despite the rough outing his last time out, Lewis has been very good over the past three months, having remarkably notched 13 quality starts in his past 16 assignments. That stretch also includes a solid seven-inning, three-run performance opposing these Padres back in mid-July. Even so, he’s a +110 road ’dog in this one.

The Padres aren’t one of the main contenders right now in any of the National League’s playoff races, but they’re still mathematically in it, with their closest deficit being 9.5 games back of first in the NL West. As a result, they’ll need to take this series to remain alive, and they couldn’t have a better pitcher on the mound tonight, going with their model of consistency Tyson Ross (9-9, 3.42 ERA). The 28-year-old is coming off a bit of an uncharacteristic start, in which he allowed four runs against the Nationals, though he did punch out a season-high-tying nine batters in the process. It’s so rare for Ross to surrender more than three earned runs in an outing that it’s only happened three times now in his 27 starts this season. Like his counterpart, Ross faced tonight’s opponent earlier this season, when he blanked the Rangers over 6 2/3 innings in Arlington. The over/under is 7.

                        MLB

                        Monday, August 31

Peavy has been dominant against the Dodgers

Jake Peavy looks to continue his long-standing dominance against Los Angeles when the San Francisco Giants visit the Dodgers in Monday's opener of a three-game series. The right-hander is 14-3 with a 2.30 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 27 career starts against Los Angeles.

Peavy and the Giants are presently +134 for Monday's matchup, while the Dodgers, scheduled to start Brett Anderson, are currently -145.

White Sox revoke waivers, keep closer Robertson

Closer David Robertson will not return to the New York Yankees.

The Chicago White Sox slammed the door on reunion talk Monday, the deadline for waiver trade agreements, when they revoked waivers on Robertson and retained their ninth-inning reliever.

He has three years and $38 million remaining on a contract signed with Chicago as an unrestricted free agent last winter.

Robertson left the Yankees, for whom he successfully stepped into the closer's role when Mariano Rivera, to be one of the highest-paid closers in baseball and was a key piece to a White Sox makeover.

Over wagers cashing in games at Fenway Park

Over bets have gone 16-4-1 in the last 21 games at Fenway Park heading into Monday's series opener between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.

The Red Sox are returning home after a six-game road trip (at Chicago White Sox, at New York Mets) but they had a 10-game homestand prior to hitting the road. In those 10 games, the Over went a blistering 8-1-1.

Season to date, the Over/Under count at Fenway Park sits at 35-27.

Ivan Nova is scheduled to take the mound for the visitors while the Sox are expected to counter with Eduardo Rodriguez. The total opened at nine and is now up to 9.5.

Dodgers on a tear for Under bettors

The Los Angeles Dodgers have participated in a lot of low-scoring games recently, and Under bettors are laughing all the way to the bank as a result.

The Under has paid out in nine out of the club's last 10 games. Fresh off getting no-hit by Jake Arrieta and the Cubs, L.A. will be seeking to get its offense going again Monday versus the San Francisco Giants at Dodger Stadium.

Sportsbooks are offering a 7.5 run total for the game.

Wind blowing out at Coors Field Monday

As if the ball needed any more help getting out of Coors Field.

Weather forecasts expect some hitters' wind in Denver, as gusts of around 11 miles per hour to centerfield are expected at Coors Field when the Colorado Rockies host the Arizona Diamondbacks Monday.

According to our Coors Field stats, the Over/Under is 5-3 when wind blows out to center at Coors Field, but the O/U count is 35-36 in the Mile High City on the season.

Robbie Ray is expected to start for the Dbacks, while Chad Bettis is probable to take the bump for the Rockies.

Oddsmakers sent out a total of 10.5 and that still stands.

                            MLB

                            Monday, August 31

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB betting cheat sheet: Birds of a different feather
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edwin Encarnacion owns the major league's longest active hitting streak at 25 games, and he's batting .409 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs during that span.

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the mid-week major-league schedule:

                            Birds of a Different Feather

The Toronto Blue Jays may not have the best record in baseball, but they are without a doubt the team that nobody wants to play in the playoffs. The Jays have won 24 of their last 29 overall, and they lead the majors in runs scored by a country mile. While it was their offense that carried them in the first half of the season, in recent weeks their defense and pitching staff have been equal to the task. The Jays host Cleveland this week, and they'll be heavy favorites in all three games.

                            Reds Reeling

Cincinnati has lost 14 of it's last 16 overall, and they have a tough series on the road in Chicago this week. The Reds have lost 12 of their last 16 versus the Cubs, and eight of their last 10 at Wrigley. Chicago has won 14 of it's last 17 home games.

                            Angels Slumping

The Halos are batting a major league worst .228 since the All Start break, and they've lost eight of their last 10 overall. They are on the road in Oakland this week, and then they play the Rangers at home this weekend. They trail the Rangers by 3.5 games in the Wild Card race, and if they fail to gain ground now, the playoffs will likely be out of reach.

                            Hitting Notes

                            * Edwin Encarnacion owns the major league's longest active hitting streak at 25 games, and he's batting .409 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs during that span. The Jays host the Indians in a three game series this week, and Danny Salazar will start Game 1 for Cleveland. Encarnacion is 2-for-5 with a home run lifetime versus Salazar.

                            * Josh Donaldson was 6-for-13 with two home runs and five RBIs in a three game sweep of the Tigers this weekend. He leads the major leagues with 106 RBIs, and his 36 home runs are just three fewer than major league leader Nelson Cruz.

                            Pitching Notes

                            * Mad Max Scherzer has now lost his last four starts, putting his record at 11-11, 2.88 ERA on the season. He's 1-4 with a 5.09 ERA in eight starts since the All Star break, and his next start comes on Wednesday on the road in St. Louis. He lost his only previous start versus the Cardinals, allowing a pair of runs on six hits over seven innings.

                            * Mark Buehrle is quietly in second place in the American League with 14 wins, one fewer than Dallas Keuchel and Felix Hernandez. Buehrle is 4-1 with a 3.99 ERA in his last eight starts.

                            Totals Streak

Over the last few years, we've come to think of San Diego's PETCO Park as one of the most pitcher friendly in the majors. That's quickly becoming a myth here in 2015. According to ESPN Park Factors, PETCO ranks in the top 10 in home runs. They host the Texas Rangers this week, and the Padres have seen the total go over in seven of their last eight home games.

                            Weather Notes

                            * Wind is expected blow out to dead-center field at around 13 miles per hour in Denver when the Colorado Rockies host the Los Angeles Angels Monday.

                            Injury Notes

                            * Yasiel Puig is sidelined for at least two weeks with a hamstring strain, and that's not good news for a Dodgers team that has struggled at the plate of late.

                            * Mark Teixeira has not played since August 26 due to a bruised shin. He will not be available for Game 1 at Boston, but could return at some point in the series.
