    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Braves got swept at home this weekend, outscored 38-11; Tigers got outscored in Toronto 29-6. tough weekend for those two teams.

-- It is funny that one of the gurus of the spread offense that has taken over college football was the coach at Colorado School of Mines; he is at Montana now.

    -- Red Sox 1B Travis Shaw at home: 26-58 (6 HR, 12 RBI, .492 OB%)
Red Sox 1B Travis Shaw on the road: 4-41 (1 HR, 4 RBI, .156 OB%)

-- Seattle Mariner John Hicks is first big leaguer since 2003 whose first two games in the majors came at third base and at catcher.

-- Angels are 11-25 in their last 36 games; that not good.

-- Best wishes to John Daly, who apparently suffered a collapsed lung Saturday on a golf course; he was back playing yesterday, so hopefully he is OK.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.......

    13) NFL teams can have 90 players in training camp, thats 2,880 players; they have to be down to 75 players tomorrow, then to 53 (plus 10 more on practice squad) by the weekend. So 2,016 players will have jobs when the season starts and 864 guys who are in camp now will be looking for work. Tough time for marginal players.

    12) Cubs 2, Dodgers 0-- Jake Arrieta tossed the 6th no-hitter this season in a game that was a 5:05 local time first pitch in LA, so shadows were a factor. Dodgers are 5-4 with Chase Utley in the lineup; they got no-hit in two of the four losses.

    11) Odd fact: MLB.com's Mike Petriello points out the 1917 Chicago White Sox won the World Series, but were no-hit twice that year, on consecutive days (May 5-6). The Dodgers just got no-hit twice in nine days.

    10) Rosters expand to 40 players tomorrow; lot of people are pushing for a change to this- they want teams to be able to name only 25 players active for each game once the rosters expand. September baseball as it stands now is a lot different than baseballl the first five months of the season.

    9) Dodgers are paying $87.5M to guys who aren't on the Dodgers anymore.

    8) Cleveland Indians president Mark Shapiro is apparently leaving the Tribe to become the new president of the Toronto Blue Jays, whose current president is retiring after the season. He won't have to make many changes, not the way the Jays have been crushing the ball and winning games.

    7) Case in point: Not only does Edwin Encarnacion have four homers in his last two games, he is riding a 25-game hitting streak. No easy outs in that lineup.

    6) There is a petition going around for the Red Sox to re-consider and not fire their TV announcer Don Orsillo, who is very popular after 15 years with the Sox. Last time I checked, over 48,000 people had signed the petition and that was couple days ago.

    5) Six of the Oakland Raiders' eight road games this season are 1pm ET starts, so lot of trips east; over the last three seasons, Oakland is 1-14 in 1PM ET games.

    4) Staying in Oakland for one more unpleasant stat: since the A's traded Cespedes to Boston last July 31, they are 79-108; they were 66-41 last year when this monumental blunder happened. But hey, Billy Beane's assistants went to Ivy League schools and had an algorithm that said Jonny Gomes and Sam Fuld could replace Cespedes in the aggregate. My ass they could, even a junior college dropout could tell you that.

    3) I live a mile from a road with strip of restaurants; think there are over 30 of them in a 1.5-mile stretch, so there is a lot of competition for business. Stopped into a Hooters for chicken wings around 6:00 Sunday, hoping to watch baseballl and the Texans-Saints game. But no live games on, nada, even though there was an NFL fantasy draft going on in one corner of the restaurant.

How do you own a sports bar and not have the baseball package, or at least have one employee who knows when there is an NFL game on TV? I had to ask the bartender to put it on (which she quickly did); I mean, she says she knows nothing about the NFL, but she did say she makes a lot more money during football season.

    2) If the baseball playoffs started today.......
NL-- Mets-Cardinals-Dodgers. Wild Card: Cubs @ Pirates
AL-- Blue Jays-Royals-Astros. Wild Card: Rangers @ Bronx

    1) Fantasy football tip: Cardinals have a TE named Ifeanyi Momah (#80); he looked like Kellen Winslow Sr in last night's game in Oakland. Just an exhibition game, but he looked at home catching the ball and running people over, even if most of the people he ran over will be bartenders or UPS guys two weeks from now.

          Monday, August 31

Pitcher change - Michael Lorenzen, Cincinnati

Chi. Cubs vs. Cincinnati on August 31 at 8:05 PM. Previous Starter: David Holmberg.

MLB roundup: Cubs' Arrieta no-hits Dodgers

LOS ANGELES -- Jake Arrieta pitched a no-hitter Sunday night, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 2-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.

By throwing the Cubs' first no-hitter in seven years, Arrieta (17-6) became the major leagues' leader in victories. The right-hander allowed only two baserunners, on a walk and an error, and amassed 12 strikeouts while throwing 116 pitches.

In the ninth inning, Arrieta struck out Justin Turner, Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley consecutive to close out the gem.

The Dodgers were no-hit for the second time in 10 days after Astros right-hander Mike Fiers accomplished the feat Aug. 21 in Houston. No NL team was ever no-hit twice in a shorter span.

          Blue Jays 9, Tigers 2

TORONTO -- Edwin Encarnacion hit his fourth homer in two days and extended his hitting streak to a major-league-best 25 games as Toronto defeated Detroit.

Encarnacion, who hit three home runs and equaled the club record with nine RBIs on Saturday, went 2-for-3 and was hit by a pitch on Sunday. He hit his 30th of the season with two outs in the first.

Josh Donaldson, Kevin Pillar and Russell Martin also homered for the Blue Jays, who completed a three-game sweep of the Tigers.

          Mets 5, Red Sox 4

NEW YORK -- Michael Cuddyer atoned for a costly misplay in the field by delivering the tie-breaking RBI single as New York salvaged the finale of a three-game series by edging Boston.

The Mets snapped a five-game home losing streak while the Red Sox fell to 10-6 under interim manager Torey Lovullo.

David Ortiz gave the Red Sox a 2-1 lead with a two-run homer in the sixth. It was the 494th homer of his career, breaking a tie with Lou Gehrig and Fred McGriff for 27th place all-time.

          Nationals 7, Marlins 4

WASHINGTON -- Leadoff man Jayson Werth had a homer, double, walk and three RBIs and Washington, despite another abbreviated start by Stephen Strasburg, battled back to beat Miami.

The Nationals won their fourth series in a row but remained 5 1/2 games back of the first-place Mets.

The Marlins jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a homer by Justin Bour in the first but the bullpen couldn't hold up after starter Brad Hand (4-4) allowed five runs in 4 2/3 innings and fell to 0-6 against the Nationals.

The winning pitcher was former starter Doug Fister (5-7), who came on in the fifth after Strasburg gave up seven hits and four runs in four innings while throwing just 60 pitches.

          Rays 3, Royals 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla -- Kevin Kiermaier hit the go-ahead home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift Tampa Bay over Kansas City.

The Rays' bullpen combined for four shutout innings, with Xavier Cedeno (3-1) earning the win. Brad Boxberger pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 32nd save of the season.

Luke Hochevar (1-1) took the loss for the Royals, who failed to sweep the season series against the Rays.

          Indians 9, Angels 2

CLEVELAND -- Josh Tomlin pitched seven strong innings and Cleveland took advantage of a couple of gift hits that produced runs to complete a three-game sweep of Los Angeles.

The Indians have won five in a row while the Angels have lost eight of their last 10. The only bright spot for the Angels was center fielder Mike Trout, who came into the game hitting .194 in the month of August, but was 4-for-4.

In seven innings the right-hander Tomlin (3-1) gave up two runs on six hits, with eight strikeouts and no walks.

          Rockies 5, Pirates 0

PITTSBURGH -- Jorge De La Rosa pitched into the seventh inning for just his second win in his last 10 starts before being ejected and Ben Paulsen hit a two-run triple as Colorado beat Pittsburgh.

De La Rosa (8-6) allowed four hits in six-plus innings while striking out seven and walking one. The left-hander's only other win since July 11 came Aug. 7 against the Nationals at Washington. Relievers Scott Oberg, Christian Friedrich, Jairo Diaz and John Axford completed the four-hit shutout.

De La Rosa and manager Walt Weiss were ejected for arguing with home plate umpire Jeff Nelson as Weiss went to the mound to remove De La Rosa from the game in the seventh.

          Brewers 4, Reds 1

MILWAUKEE -- A strong performance by right-hander Wily Peralta and a solo home run by Ryan Braun led Milwaukee over Cincinnati.

Peralta (5-8) was coming off his worst outing of the season, a 2 2/3-inning effort last Tuesday in Cleveland, but he started out strong on Sunday, hitting the mid-90s with his fastball in the first inning. His offense gave him a slim lead to work with, going up 1-0 on Braun's 24th home run of the season.

Reds left-hander John Lamb (0-3) allowed five hits over his six innings of work. He allowed Milwaukee's first two runs and didn't walk a batter while striking out eight.

          Padres 9, Phillies 4

PHILADELPHIA -- San Diego finally solved Philadelphia for a win to avoid a season sweep.

The Padres, who came in 0-5 this season against the Phillies, got homers from Matt Kemp, Justin Upton and Yangervis Solarte, while right-hander James Shields threw seven innings of one-run ball and struck out eight.

The long balls by Kemp and Upton came early against right-hander Alec Asher, who was making his major league debut. Despite the loss, the Phillies are 18-5-2 in 25 series against the Padres since 2004.

          Yankees 20, Braves 6

ATLANTA -- Nathan Eovaldi, supported by three early home runs, extended his league-leading winning streak to nine games in New York's rout over Atlanta.

Jacoby Ellsbury, Chase Headley and Stephen Drew each went deep over a two-inning span to help the Yankees sweep the three-game series and send the Braves to their 12th loss in 13 games.

It marked the 12th time this season the Yankees have scored double-digit runs, and the second time this series. The 38 runs are the most scored by the Yankees in a three-game series this year.

          Twins 7, Astros 5

MINNEAPOLIS -- Ervin Santana pitched seven solid innings, scattering six hits, allowing no runs while striking out 10 batters as Minnesota took the rubber game of a three-game series.

Santana had just one clean inning but was able to steer clear of trouble. Five of the six hits allowed by Santana were singles and he didn't walk a batter.

Santana became the first Twins starter to pitch at least six innings since Aug. 20, a span of eight games. Despite the recent rough patch by its starters, the win was Minnesota's eighth in its last 10 games.

          Rangers 6, Orioles 0

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Derek Holland allowed just three hits and struck out 11 in a complete-game shutout as Texas completed a three-game sweep of Baltimore.

Holland recorded his eighth career shutout, and he matched his career high for strikeouts.

Holland (2-1) struck out all nine Baltimore starters at least once and didn't walk a batter. It marked the first time in his career he struck out at least 10 without walking a hitter.

Delino DeShields and Elvis Andrus each had two hits and drove in a run.

          White Sox 6, Mariners 5 (11 innings)

CHICAGO -- Seattle was one out away from beating Chicago for the third consecutive game but threw it away in the ninth inning.

A throwing error by shortstop Brad Miller with two outs in the bottom of the ninth allowed the game-tying run to score and forced extra innings. The White Sox then won it in the 11th on a single by Tyler Saladino to earn a split in the four-game series.

Saladino, who also drove in a run with a double in the fourth, went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. His single to right in the 11th was off left-hander David Rollins and scored shortstop Alexei Ramirez (3-for-5) to end the game.

          A's 7, Diamondbacks 4

PHOENIX -- Marcus Semien hit a two-out, two-run single in the 11th inning, and switch-pitcher Pat Venditte recorded his first major league victory in Oakland's win over Arizona.

Danny Valencia singled with two outs in the 11th off right-hander Brad Ziegler (0-2), and Stephen Vogt singled before Josh Phegley was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Semien grounded an opposite-field single to right field to break a tie at 4, and Eric Sogard followed with a run-scoring single off A.J. Schugel.

          Cardinals 6, Giants 0

SAN FRANCISCO -- St. Louis hit three home runs, including a game-opening shot by Matt Carpenter, in a victory over San Francisco that gave the Cardinals a 2-1 series win.

Jaime Garcia survived 10 Giants hits in 6 1/3 innings to win for the 10th time in his last 15 road starts.

The Cardinals roughed up rookie Chris Heston for three runs within the first four batters of the game and never looked back, completing a 7-3 Western swing that began with a pair of losses at San Diego.

Game of the Day: Giants at Dodgers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jake Peavy is 14-3 with a 2.30 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 27 career starts against Los Angeles.

San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers (-145, 7.5)

Jake Peavy looks to continue his long-standing dominance against Los Angeles when the San Francisco Giants visit the Dodgers in Monday's opener of a three-game series. The right-hander is 14-3 with a 2.30 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 27 career starts against Los Angeles.

Peavy will try to tame a Dodgers' lineup that has been no-hit twice in the last nine games after Jake Arrieta of the Chicago Cubs held Los Angeles hitless on Sunday. Arrieta's masterpiece halted the Dodgers' five-game winning streak and kept Los Angeles' National League West lead at 3 1/2 games over the Giants. Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez is mired in a 12-game homerless drought but has gone deep three times against San Francisco this season. Giants outfielder Marlon Byrd had two doubles, one triple and four RBIs in Sunday's 7-5 loss to St. Louis and has driven in 11 runs in the last four games.

              TV:
10:10 p.m. ET, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

              LINE HISTORY:
The Dodgers opened around -135 but are now -153. The total total opened at 7.5.

              INJURY REPORT:
Giants - SS Brandon Crawford (Doubtful, back), CF Angel Pagan (Probable Tuesday, knee), RF Hunter Pence (15-day DL, oblique), 2B Joe Panik (15-day DL, back). Dodgers - LF Enrique Hernandez (Questionable, hamstring), RF Yaiel Puig (15-day DL, hamstring).

              WEATHER:
Temperatures are expected to be in the low-70s under clear skies. Wind will blow out to right field at around eight miles per hour.

              WHAT CAPPERS SAY:
"Madison Bumgarner notwithstanding, the Giants' starting rotation - normally a strength - is in a bit of trouble. Veteran RH Matt Cain went on the DL (again) for a nerve issue and Ryan Vogelsong continues to get roughed up. Could San Francisco all of a sudden be an option for James Shields? Somebody please tell the Dodgers to wake up and look at their dismal relief pitching before it's too late. Two of the relievers who were available a week ago are now gone as Fernando Rodney was traded to the Cubs, while Addison Reed went to the Mets. What is Mattingly & Co. waiting for?"

              PITCHING MATCHUP:
Giants RH Jake Peavy (4-6, 4.21 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Brett Anderson (8-8, 3.36)

Peavy defeated the Cubs in his last turn when he gave up two runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. He has pitched at least six innings in eight of 10 starts since returning from a back injury and has served up just two homers over his last six turns. Peavy hasn't faced the Dodgers yet this season but has always controlled outfielder Andre Ethier (5-for-35).

Anderson beat Cincinnati in his last outing when he gave up three unearned runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings. He has allowed three or fewer earned runs in 12 of his last 13 starts and has issued two or fewer walks in 11 of his past 12 turns. Anderson is 1-2 with a 4.71 ERA in four 2015 starts against San Francisco and is 1-4 with a 4.91 ERA in seven career outings.

              TRENDS:

              * Giants are 5-1 in the last six meetings.
              * Giants are 2-9 in their last 11 road games.
              * Dodgers are 7-1 in Andersons last eight starts with four days of rest.
              * Under is 4-0 in Dodgers last four overall.

              CONSENSUS:
Sixty-three percent of users are backing the Dodgers.

Wind blowing out to short porch at Fenway Park

According to weather forecasts, wind will blow out to right field at around 11 miles per hour when the Boston Red Sox host the New York Yankees at Fenway Park Monday evening.

Our MLB Stadiums data for Fenway Park shows that the Over has gone 5-2 in seven games when wind blows out to right field this season.

Ivan Nova is scheduled to make the start for the Yanks, while Eduardo Rodriguez is expected to get the ball for the Red Sox. Oddsmakers opened the total at 9, but that has since moved up to 9.5.

Favorites dominate on the diamond Sunday

Favorites had a big day on the diamond Sunday, recording 12 wins in the 15 Major League Baseball games on the schedule. That clip was good enough to cash at a rate of 80 percent and if you'd blindly bet $100 on faves in all 15 games, you'd be up 5.57 units.

The only underdogs to cash were the Colorado Rockies, Minnesota Twins and Oakland A's.

Season to date, favorites are now 1109-817 straight up with home favorites 783-544.

                    Monday, August 31

Peavy has been dominant against the Dodgers

Jake Peavy looks to continue his long-standing dominance against Los Angeles when the San Francisco Giants visit the Dodgers in Monday's opener of a three-game series. The right-hander is 14-3 with a 2.30 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 27 career starts against Los Angeles.

Peavy and the Giants are presently +134 for Monday's matchup, while the Dodgers, scheduled to start Brett Anderson, are currently -145.

White Sox revoke waivers, keep closer Robertson

Closer David Robertson will not return to the New York Yankees.

The Chicago White Sox slammed the door on reunion talk Monday, the deadline for waiver trade agreements, when they revoked waivers on Robertson and retained their ninth-inning reliever.

He has three years and $38 million remaining on a contract signed with Chicago as an unrestricted free agent last winter.

Robertson left the Yankees, for whom he successfully stepped into the closer's role when Mariano Rivera, to be one of the highest-paid closers in baseball and was a key piece to a White Sox makeover.

Over wagers cashing in games at Fenway Park

Over bets have gone 16-4-1 in the last 21 games at Fenway Park heading into Monday's series opener between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.

The Red Sox are returning home after a six-game road trip (at Chicago White Sox, at New York Mets) but they had a 10-game homestand prior to hitting the road. In those 10 games, the Over went a blistering 8-1-1.

Season to date, the Over/Under count at Fenway Park sits at 35-27.

Ivan Nova is scheduled to take the mound for the visitors while the Sox are expected to counter with Eduardo Rodriguez. The total opened at nine and is now up to 9.5.

Dodgers on a tear for Under bettors

The Los Angeles Dodgers have participated in a lot of low-scoring games recently, and Under bettors are laughing all the way to the bank as a result.

The Under has paid out in nine out of the club's last 10 games. Fresh off getting no-hit by Jake Arrieta and the Cubs, L.A. will be seeking to get its offense going again Monday versus the San Francisco Giants at Dodger Stadium.

Sportsbooks are offering a 7.5 run total for the game.

Wind blowing out at Coors Field Monday

As if the ball needed any more help getting out of Coors Field.

Weather forecasts expect some hitters' wind in Denver, as gusts of around 11 miles per hour to centerfield are expected at Coors Field when the Colorado Rockies host the Arizona Diamondbacks Monday.

According to our Coors Field stats, the Over/Under is 5-3 when wind blows out to center at Coors Field, but the O/U count is 35-36 in the Mile High City on the season.

Robbie Ray is expected to start for the Dbacks, while Chad Bettis is probable to take the bump for the Rockies.

Oddsmakers sent out a total of 10.5 and that still stands.

MLB betting cheat sheet: Birds of a different feather
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edwin Encarnacion owns the major league's longest active hitting streak at 25 games, and he's batting .409 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs during that span.

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the mid-week major-league schedule:

                        Birds of a Different Feather

The Toronto Blue Jays may not have the best record in baseball, but they are without a doubt the team that nobody wants to play in the playoffs. The Jays have won 24 of their last 29 overall, and they lead the majors in runs scored by a country mile. While it was their offense that carried them in the first half of the season, in recent weeks their defense and pitching staff have been equal to the task. The Jays host Cleveland this week, and they'll be heavy favorites in all three games.

                        Reds Reeling

Cincinnati has lost 14 of it's last 16 overall, and they have a tough series on the road in Chicago this week. The Reds have lost 12 of their last 16 versus the Cubs, and eight of their last 10 at Wrigley. Chicago has won 14 of it's last 17 home games.

                        Angels Slumping

The Halos are batting a major league worst .228 since the All Start break, and they've lost eight of their last 10 overall. They are on the road in Oakland this week, and then they play the Rangers at home this weekend. They trail the Rangers by 3.5 games in the Wild Card race, and if they fail to gain ground now, the playoffs will likely be out of reach.

                        Hitting Notes

                        * Edwin Encarnacion owns the major league's longest active hitting streak at 25 games, and he's batting .409 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs during that span. The Jays host the Indians in a three game series this week, and Danny Salazar will start Game 1 for Cleveland. Encarnacion is 2-for-5 with a home run lifetime versus Salazar.

                        * Josh Donaldson was 6-for-13 with two home runs and five RBIs in a three game sweep of the Tigers this weekend. He leads the major leagues with 106 RBIs, and his 36 home runs are just three fewer than major league leader Nelson Cruz.

                        Pitching Notes

                        * Mad Max Scherzer has now lost his last four starts, putting his record at 11-11, 2.88 ERA on the season. He's 1-4 with a 5.09 ERA in eight starts since the All Star break, and his next start comes on Wednesday on the road in St. Louis. He lost his only previous start versus the Cardinals, allowing a pair of runs on six hits over seven innings.

                        * Mark Buehrle is quietly in second place in the American League with 14 wins, one fewer than Dallas Keuchel and Felix Hernandez. Buehrle is 4-1 with a 3.99 ERA in his last eight starts.

                        Totals Streak

Over the last few years, we've come to think of San Diego's PETCO Park as one of the most pitcher friendly in the majors. That's quickly becoming a myth here in 2015. Weather Notes

                        Injury Notes

                        * Yasiel Puig is sidelined for at least two weeks with a hamstring strain, and that's not good news for a Dodgers team that has struggled at the plate of late.

                        * Mark Teixeira has not played since August 26 due to a bruised shin. He will not be available for Game 1 at Boston, but could return at some point in the series.
