    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Alabama-Georgia-Florida may all play two QBs in their openers next week.

-- Crimson Tide lost 54% of its rushing yards, 78% of its receiving yards from LY.

-- In case you were wondering, American Pharoah weighs 1,184 pounds.

-- AD at Illinois had all summer to fire football coach Tim Beckman; why wait until a week before the season starts?

-- Jacob deGrom was the 272nd player taken in the 2010 draft; not sure if that is bad scouting by everyone else or just good scouting by the Mets?

-- Falcons signed WR Julio Jones to a 5-year deal with $47.5M of guaranteed $$$.

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday......

    13) How deep is LSU's football team? I'm watching the Ravens game and they have a defensive lineman who might make the team in a surprise-- the guy started one game in his whole career at LSU, yet he is going to make an NFL roster, if not Baltimore, then he will be make another team. Lot of depth on those SEC rosters.

    12) Montana 38, North Dakota State 35-- Tremendous game; State coaches screwed up clock management when they had the ball up 35-31 with around 2:00 left but still this was fun to watch and high quality of football. North Dakota State won the I-AA national title the last four years- they're not used to losing.

    11) Montana native Brent Musburger did play-by-play; when I am 76 I hope the hell I have his enthusiasm; Jesse Palmer is really good as an analyst, so game had a bigtime feel to it. A sellout crowd of 26,000+ in Missoula was mostly dressed in maroon.

    10) 33-yard extra points are getting the thumbs-up on NFL broadcasts; some of them have been missed, which will result in more teams going for two points. It just is not automatic anymore, so some strategy may come into play with it now.

    9) NFL should do instant replay like everyone else; have a control center where replay decisions are made. Would make replay decisions faster and probably better.

    8) Buffalo Bills sent four captains out for the coin toss Saturday; all four QBs, and then they all played well in a 43-19 rout of the Steelers. EJ Manuel, Tyrod Taylor, Matt Cassel are all battling for the starting job-- if they don't keep all three, they might get a draft pick for the odd man out.

    7) If Tyrod Taylor becomes a good NFL QB, it might spark a debate over whether QBs are better off sitting and watching for 2-3 years before becoming starting players. At no point during his career at Virginia Tech was Taylor considered a prospect, but he is doing well for Buffalo and might become the starter.

Throwing rookie QBs right into the fray sees like a dumb way to do business, but the money they get paid has turned impatient front offices in that direction. Maybe you need to develop the person who is playing the most important position on the field.

    6) There is a John Wilkes Booth bobblehead on EBay; seriously, the guy who killed Abraham Lincoln has his own bobblehead. Why?

    5) Juan Encarnacion hit three homers for the Blue Jays, so Toronto being a hockey city, fans threw hats on the field to commemorate his "hat trick". He drove in nine runs for Toronto, which leads the AL East by 1.5 games.

Toronto's lineup is so loaded that they have received only seven intentional walks the entire season. Paul Goldschmidt has been walked intentionally 24 times this year.

    4) Red Sox interim managet Torey Lovullo must have had an interesting childhood; his dad was a producer on the old country music/humor show Hee Haw.

    3) Tennis great John McEnroe threw out the first ball before the Mets game; tennis US Open starts Monday. Luckily McEnroe's pitch was pretty good, or else lot of New Yorkers would've yelled "You cannot be serious!!!" at him, like he used to yell at all the linesmen who made calls against him in his playing days

    2) Michael Vick's first play for the Steelers was a 62-yard completion. Interesting.

    1) This was our last quiet Saturday until April; college football starts Thursday and that'll be great fun. Make sure you log in here for analysis of college/pro football every week and then the NHL when that starts in early October, as well as all the baseball every day from now until the end of the World Series.

MLB roundup: Encarnacion hits 3 HRs, 9 RBIs in Jays rout

TORONTO -- Edwin Encarnacion hit three home runs, had nine RBIs and extended his hitting streak to a major-league-best 24 games Saturday as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Detroit Tigers 15-1.

The nine RBIs equaled the club record set by third baseman Roy Howell in 1977 against the New York Yankees. Encarnacion extended his hitting streak with a three-run homer off Buck Farmer in the first inning. He hit a two-run shot off Guido Knudson in the sixth and then connected for a grand slam against Alex Wilson in the seventh.

Drew Hutchison (13-2) allowed six hits and one run while striking out seven over seven innings to earn his fifth straight win for the American League East-leading Blue Jays.

Russell Martin also homered for Toronto and Ben Revere had four hits. Ryan Goins and Josh Donaldson each added three hits for the Blue Jays, who have won the first two games of the three-game series.

      Cardinals 6, Giants 0

SAN FRANCISCO -- Lance Lynn beat San Francisco for the first time in his career, shutting out the defending World Series champion on six hits before spraining his right ankle in the eighth inning.

Brandon Moss ignited a four-run fifth inning with a leadoff triple and Yadier Molina capped the uprising with a two-RBI single.

Lynn was injured when he fielded a lead-off squibbler from Juan Perez in the eighth inning. Lynn fielded the ball at the bottom of the hill, but turned his right ankle as he pivoted before making a throw.

      Red Sox 3, Mets 1

NEW YORK -- Mookie Betts homered and scored two runs and Joe Kelly threw 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball to win his sixth straight start for Boston.

The Mets, who had a seven-game winning streak snapped Friday, have lost five straight home games dating back to Aug. 14.

      Royals 6, Rays 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Mike Moustakas went 3-for-5 with three RBIs to lead Kansas City over Tampa Bay.

Moustakas has two RBI doubles and added an RBI single in the ninth inning to provide an insurance run.

Royals starter Kris Medlen gave up three runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five and threw 78 pitches.

      Nationals 5, Marlins 1

WASHINGTON -- Jordan Zimmermann allowed one run in seven innings and his teammates clubbed three home runs, including back-to-back blasts in the sixth as Washington beat Miami.

Ryan Zimmerman hit a solo homer in the second, Clint Robinson clubbed a two-run shot to the opposite field in the sixth and Ian Desmond followed with a long solo homer to center.

Washington moved to 5 1/2 games of the first-place New York Mets, who lost earlier in the day to the Boston Red Sox, 3-1.

      Phillies 4, Padres3

PHILADELPHIA -- Rookie Adam Morgan threw six solid innings and picked up his first career RBI as Philadelphia took down San Diego.

The 25-year-old Morgan, who missed the 2014 season after undergoing rotator cuff surgery, allowed four hits and two unearned runs while striking out three without giving up a walk.

Morgan also accounted for the winning run, singling in Freddy Galvis in the bottom of the fourth inning for his second career hit and first career RBI.

      Yankees 3, Braves 1

ATLANTA -- Rookie Luis Severino made his fifth consecutive solid start, pitching six scoreless innings as New York defeated Atlanta.

Severino scattered four hits, walked three and struck out five. The right-hander, who threw 88 pitches, has allowed two or fewer runs in four starts. He lowered his ERA from 2.74 to 2.17.

Lefty Andrew Miller worked a scoreless ninth inning, striking out two, to record his 28th save.

      Pirates 4, Rockies 3

PITTSBURGH -- Aramis Ramirez hit a three-run home run in the first and J.A. Happ held Colorado to one run in 5 1/3 innings.

The Pirates moved to 30 games over .500 at 79-49 for the first time since they finished the 1992 season with a 96-66 record. Pittsburgh remained 3 1/2 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the race for the NL Central.

Mark Melancon recorded his 43rd save.

      Indians 8, Angels 3

CLEVELAND -- Yan Gomes' grand slam capped a five-run eighth inning as Cleveland beat Los Angeles.

Joe Smith, who pitched for the Indians from 2009-13, gave up the slam after Lonnie Chisenhall was intentionally walked.

The win went to Bryan Shaw, who pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Cleveland has won four in a row.

      Rangers 4, Orioles 3

ARLINGTON, Texas – Texas matched its 2014 win total by edging Baltimore.

The win, the 67th for Texas, kept the Rangers in the No. 2 wild-card spot. The slumping Orioles have lost nine of their last 10 games.

With the game tied at 3 in the sixth, the Orioles opted to intentionally walk Texas left fielder Will Venable to get to catcher Bobby Wilson with the go-ahead run at second base. That move backfired as Wilson looped a double to left off Mychal Givens to give the Rangers the lead for good.

      Astros 4, Twins 1

MINNEAPOLIS -- Eight days after throwing a no-hitter, Mike Fiers delivered another gem as Houston beat Minnesota.

Fiers allowed three hits and one run in six-plus innings, improving to 2-0 since being dealt to the Astros from the Milwaukee Brewers on July 30. He also walked three and struck out five.

In four starts since the trade, Fiers has allowed two earned runs.

      Mariners 7, White Sox 6

CHICAGO -- Seattle scored three runs in the first inning, built a five-run lead and then need to hold on late to beat Chicago.

Along with the first-inning rally, the Mariners added runs in the third, fourth and eighth to lead 7-2 going into the bottom of the eighth. The White Sox then pulled within a run by scoring four runs on four hits and two walks, with all four runs charged to right-handed reliever Logan Kensing.

Seattle brought in closer Tom Wilhelmsen to snuff out the rally and earn the save.

      Athletics 3, Diamondbacks 2

PHOENIX -- Stephen Vogt had three hits including a homer and drove in all three runs, the last with a go-ahead single in the eighth inning in Oakland's victory.

Vogt homered in the second inning, singled in the fourth and walked in the sixth, gaining some redemption after committing two passed balls that led to two unearned runs in the sixth inning of a 6-4 loss to Arizona on Friday.

Fernando Rodriguez gave up one walk in two innings of relief and Drew Pomeranz struck out the side in a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save.

      Reds 12, Brewers 9

MILWAUKEE -- Joey Votto hit a two-run home run as Cincinnati tagged Francisco Rodriguez for four runs in the ninth inning in a victory over Milwaukee.

Rodriguez had converted all 30 of his save opportunities this season and 35 in a row dating back to Aug. 27 of last year.

But he had pitched just once -- a scoreless ninth inning Friday -- in the last 10 days.

Sunday's NFL Preseason Week 3 Betting Primer

The third week of the NFL preseason concludes with two on the board Sunday. With this being the last time before the regular season most starters will see action and camp injuries claiming plenty of players already, it can be hard to stay on top of the action.

Houston Texans at New Orleans Saints (-3.5, 43.5)

                * The Texans named Brian Hoyer their starting quarterback this week so expect him to roll with the ones into the 3rd quarter. Last season's No. 1 overall pick, defensive end JaDaveon Clowney returned to practice this week, but won't be playing in the preseason as the Texans hope to have him ready for Week 1.

                * Everyone's biggest concern with the Saints is that Drew Brees lost the majority of his pass catchers this offseason. So look to see if Brees can create some chemistry with rookie wide receiver Brandon Coleman, who has reportedly been dominating practice, but has yet to make an impact in games.

Arizona Cardinals at Oakland Raiders (PK, 40)

                * Former Titans and Jets running back Chris Johnson was recently signed by the Cardinals and despite just returning to practice this week CJ2K could see some action against Oakland. It will be interesting to see if he has any juice left in those legs and how the carries get split between him and the other backs.

                * The third week of the preseason is usually the game teams us as their final tune up heading into the regular season, but with all the injuries teams have suffered Raiders coach Jack Del Rio might take a more conservative approach with his starters in this game.

NFL roundup: Manuel shines in Bills' win

EJ Manuel stated his case to be the Buffalo Bills' starting quarterback with a strong performance in the Bills' 43-19 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in a preseason game on Saturday in Orchard Park, N.Y.

Manuel made his first preseason start after Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor had their chances to start the first two preseason games.

Manuel was 7-for-8 for 170 yards and two touchdowns. He led the Bills to scores on their first two possessions, including a 67-yard touchdown pass to tight end Charles Clay on the Bills' second drive.

The other two Bills quarterbacks also played well Saturday, with Taylor going 12-for-13 for 122 yards and Cassel hitting six of his seven passes for 38 yards in his two series.

For the Steelers, the focus was on quarterback Michael Vick, who took over for starter Ben Roethlisberger in the first quarter.

Vick, who was signed by the Steelers on Tuesday, completed a 63-yard pass to wide receiver Martavis Bryant on his first play from scrimmage and finished 4-for-5 for 116 yards. He was sacked once in the two series he played.

                  Browns 31, Buccaneers 7

Buccaneers rookie quarterback Jameis Winston struggled, going 6-for-15 for 90 yards with one interception and no touchdown passes in the loss in Tampa, Fla. Winston was also sacked four times and wound up with a passer rating of 32.6.

Browns starting quarterback Josh McCown went 17-for-23 for 117 and two touchdowns. Browns backup quarterback Johnny Maziel did not play because of a sore right elbow.

                  Vikings 28, Cowboys 14

Minnesota starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and reserve quarterback Taylor Heinicke were both perfect, with Bridgewater completing all seven of his passes and Heinicke going 11-for-11 in the victory in Arlington, Texas. Neither threw a touchdown pass, however.

Running back Dominique Williams scored two rushing touchdowns for the Vikings, who are 4-0 in the preseason.

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was 5-for-8 for 88 yards and two scores.

                  Jets 28, Giants 18

Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, playing in place of injured Geno Smith, threw two touchdown passes, and Antonio Cromartie returned an interception 59 yards for a score late in the first half to help the Jets win in East Rutherford, N.J.

Fitzpatrick completed 9 of 14 passes for 127 yards, and Walter Powell returned a punt 52 yards for a Jets touchdown in the third quarter.

Giants quarterback Eli Manning was 12-for-16 for 91 yards but threw the interception Cromartie returned for a score.

                  Dolphins 13, Falcons 9

Quarterback Ryan Tannehill completed 15 of 19 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown to lead the host Dolphins to a victory.

Dolphins receiver Jarvis Landry had five receptions for 84 yards.

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan was just 3-for-7 for 49 yards, and Atlanta failed to score a touchdown.

                  Bengals 21, Bears 10

Bengals starting quarterback Andy Dalton completed all six of his passes and engineered a 77-yard touchdown drive before leaving the game in Cincinnati in the second quarter with a sore neck. Coach Marvin Lewis said afterward that Dalton was fine.

Dalton's replacement, A.J. McCarron, completed his first seven passes and finished 12-for-17 for 149 yards and a touchdown.

The Bears' starting offense again failed to get a touchdown. Quarterback Jay Cutler was 13-for-17 for 98 yards without an interception.

                  Redskins 31, Ravens 13

With Robert Griffin III sidelined with a concussion, Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins completed 20 of 27 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown with one interception in the victory in Baltimore.

Colt McCoy started the third quarter for Washington (3-0) and produced touchdowns on his first two drives against the Ravens' reserves.

Ravens receiver Steve Smith had four catches for 95 yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Joe Flacco was 8-for-13 for 137 yards and a score.

                  Eagles 39, Packers 26

Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford completed all 10 of his passes and threw three touchdown passes to lead Philadelphia to victory in Green Bay, Wis.

The Packers, who lost wide receiver Jordy Nelson for the season to a knee injury earlier in the preseason, lost receiver Randall Cobb to a shoulder injury in this game.

Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay's No. 1 quarterback, did not play, and rookie Brett Hundley was 22-for-31 for 315 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

                  Colts 24, Rams 14

Indianapolis quarterback Andrew Luck threw his first touchdown pass of the preseason and passed for 161 yards in the victory in St. Louis.

The Rams' new quarterback, Nick Foles, also threw his first touchdown pass of the preseason while completing 10 of 11 passes.

The Edward Jones Dome appeared to be no more than one-fourth full.

                  Seahawks 16, Chargers 15

Steven Hauschka kicked a 60-yard field goal with 16 seconds left to give Seattle the win in San Diego. Hauschka also made field goals of 40 and 27 yards and missed one from 58 yards away.

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers was 13-for-19 for 140 yards, while Seattle's Russell Wilson completed seven of his 15 passes for 56 yards. Neither threw an interception or a touchdown pass.

                  Broncos 19, 49ers 12

Neither starting quarterback was particularly effective in the Broncos' victory in Denver.

Denver's Peyton Manning completed 14 of his 21 passes but threw an interception, was sacked three times and failed to get the Broncos into the end zone in his seven possessions.

San Francisco's Colin Kaepernick was just 2-for-5 passing for 13 yards and was sacked twice. However, Kaepernick was game's leading rusher, gaining 53 yards on three carries.

Forty-Niners backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert completed nine of his 11 passes for 96 yards.
