Small chance of thunderstorms in Chicago Saturday

According to weather forecasts, there will be as much as a 48 percent chance of thunderstorms and showers in Chicago as the White Sox host the Seattle Mariners Saturday evening.

There is expected to be around a 30 percent possibility leading up to game time with that increasing to just under 50 percent as the game progresses.

The New York Mets are batting a major league-best .402 over the last seven days heading into Friday's action.

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the weekend major-league schedule:

The Wright Stuff

David Wright returned to the Mets lineup on Tuesday, and he hit a home run in his first at bat. The Mets have been tearing the cover off the ball, batting a major league best .402 over the last seven days. New York has won seven in a row heading into Friday's game versus Boston, and there may be no end in sight as their next nine games come against teams with a losing record.

Home of the Braves

Atlanta is not a popular team with the betting public, and more often than not they are an underdog even at home. The Braves have managed to win six of their last 10 home games, and they are 33-26 overall at home this season. They host the Yankees this weekend, and they will most certainly be an underdog in all three games.

Cruz Control

Seattle's Nelson Cruz has seized control of the home run race. His 39 homers so far are four more than Baltimore's Chris Davis who is second in the majors. Cruz is on a tear in the second half, batting .346 since the All Star Break. The Mariners are in Chicago this weekend, and John Danks will start Game 1, and Cruz is batting .304 with a home run and 4 RBIs lifetime versus Danks.

Hitting Notes

* Michael Cuddyer got off to a slow start with the Mets, but he's really picked up the pace since the All Star break. The 36 year old was 7-for-11 with a pair of home runs and six RBIs in a four game series at Philadelphia, and he's batting .350 in August.

* Mike Trout has only hit one home run in August, and that was three weeks ago. He's batting just .205 this month, and he may have fallen behind Josh Donaldson in the AL MVP race.

Pitching Notes

* Mike Fiers pitched a no-hitter against the Dodgers in his last start, and he's scheduled to go Saturday in Minnesota. He's faced the Twins twice already this year, pitching well in both games despite a record of 0-1 with a 2.38 ERA.

* Julio Teheran has become quite underrated this year, and his overall numbers (9-6, 4.29 ERA) don't exactly stand out. He has been dominant at home though, going 7-1 with a 2.55 ERA in 13 starts. He will start Sunday at home against the Yankees.

Totals Streak

* The Phillies have been getting crushed lately, losing six of their last seven home games. All seven of those games went over the total, and the Phillies have trended over at a rate of 27-6-4 in their last 37 home games.

Injury Notes

* It's a bit of good news vs. bad news for C.C. Sabathia, as the left-hander has been told he will not require surgery on his injured knee. The bad news is that he may be relegated to the bullpen after going 4-9 with a 5.27 ERA as a starter.

* Adam Jones is banged up after crashing into a wall in Kansas City on Thursday, and his status for Friday's game remains uncertain.

Weather Notes

* Wind will be blowing in from rightfield at around 12 miles per hour in Arlington when the Texas Rangers host the Baltimore Orioles Saturday.

Dodgers place OF Puig on 15-day DL

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed outfielder Yasiel Puig on the 15-day disabled list Friday and recalled infielder Jose Peraza from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Puig has been out with a right hamstring strain since Aug. 19. Manager Don Mattingly had said the strain was "very mild" and Puig was not expected to go on the disabled list.

This is his second DL stint this season; he was out from April 26 to June 6 with a left hamstring strain.

Puig is hitting .256 with 11 home runs and 38 RBIs this season.

Peraza, 21, has hit .293 with 33 stolen bases, four homers and 42 RBIs at the Triple-A level this season. That includes a .289 average with one homer and five RBIs in 22 games with the Oklahoma City Dodgers.

Peraza was acquired from the Atlanta Braves in an eight-player trade on July 30. He made his major-league debut on Aug. 10 and played in two games with the Dodgers before being sent back to Oklahoma City.

The Calgary Stampeders look to win their fourth consecutive game when they travel to Winnipeg to tangle with the Blue Bombers on Saturday. The Stampeders are starting to flex their muscles as they downed the Saskatchewan Roughriders 34-31 to move two points clear of the Edmonton Eskimos in the race for first place in the West Division.

Calgary has dominated the Blue Bombers by winning 11 of the past 12 meetings, including the last five contests on the road and a 26-25 home victory in Week 4. Winnipeg looks to halt a two-game losing skid after letting a fourth-quarter lead slip away in the 27-20 setback to the Toronto Argonauts on Aug. 14. The Blue Bombers have dropped four of their last five games and are tied with the BC Lions in the battle for the final playoff spot in the West Division. Robert Marve looked fairly sharp in his CFL debut and has been given the starting nod once again ahead of Brian Brohm as he hopes to lead Winnipeg past Calgary at home for the first time since July 10, 2009.

"I didn't know if Bo's arm was strong enough to get it there," Rogers joked with reporters. "I just happened to get my hands on it and they didn't jump and I did."

ABOUT THE BLUE BOMBERS (3-5 SU, 3-5 ATS, 2-6 O/U): Marve completed 18-of-29 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown while running back Cameron Marshall finished with 139 yards from scrimmage and a score filling in for the injured Paris Cotton. Linebacker Jasper Simmons, who was granted his release by Calgary last week after his agent attacked the team on social media, was added to Winnipeg's practice roster. "You know I just want a fresh start and I want to contribute now," Simmons told reporters. "People can criticize me for what happened in Calgary but every person on the field wants to play."

Preview: Bombers turn up the urgency vs. Stamps

WINNIPEG -- If the real season for some teams starts Labour Day, it starts for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers a week early.

Rested and refreshed coming off the bye, they face a crucial test on Saturday night in front of the home crowd at Investors Group Field. The division-leading and defending Grey Cup Champion Calgary Stampeders are in town, the first of six West Division opponents the Bombers will face in the next seven games.

Yes, it’s accurate to say these next seven weeks will determine the fate of Bombers’ season.

“We’ve got to win some games here, that’s all there is to it,” linebacker Sam Hurl told BlueBombers.com. “We’ve lost the last two in a row and it’s a big deal to us to make sure we get back on the winning track.”

The Bombers are 3-5 and their season right now could go in one of two directions. They currently sit just outside of a playoff spot with Montreal, fourth in the East with a 4-5 record, on pace to cross over. After facing Calgary on Saturday and meeting the halfway point in the schedule, the team will probably have an accurate assessment of exactly where it is.

Up until now that’s been a mixed bag. The Bombers have led by as many as eight points in five of their eight games this season, while they owned a 16-0 lead in an eventual loss to the Stamps back in Week 4. But they’ve also been blown out in three games, outscored 122-37 in two losses to Hamilton and one to Edmonton.

“They’re a good all-around team and it’s definitely a good test for us,” said Hurl of Saturday’s opponent. “It’s the middle of the season, it’s becoming crunch time now so it’s definitely going to be an exciting game.”

“I’m pumped for it and I think it’ll be a good test to see where we’re at as a team.”

While the Stampeders will lean on star 25-year-old pivot Bo Levi Mitchell, 21-4 in his first 25 career CFL starts, the Bombers counter with 26-year-old Robert Marve making just his second career start. Marve made his first professional start in a 27-20 loss to the Argos entering the bye, accounting for 240 of the Bombers’ 305 total yards.

Marve looked good making plays both with his arms and his legs, but with his first career start under his belt and now some extra prep time off a bye, he along with his teammates expect a different outcome in start number two.

“I need to be able to ride in the fourth,” said Marve. “I’m excited about the fourth.”

“I think the last time maybe I was a little bit too [focused on] not making a mistake and thinking ‘I’m young, it’s my first game’. But I’m ready to go all out.”

“There needs to be a celebration in the fourth, it’s time to put on for Winnipeg and the fans.”

Marve threw for 203 yards on 18-of-29 passing against the Argos and threw his second career touchdown pass, however he was also intercepted. He added 37 yards on the ground on seven carries.

While all eyes will be on Marve, another key to victory will be the Bombers’ defence. That unit has put together three solid halves in a row, pitching a shutout against Hamilton in the second half of a 38-8 loss back on Aug. 9 then holding Trevor Harris to a season-low 168 passing yards.

The Bombers rank seventh in total yards and no better than fourth in any defensive category, but there’s been noted improvement under Defensive Coordinator Richie Hall.

“I think we’re moving in the right direction,” said Jamaal Westerman, whose six sacks tie him for the league lead. “Guys are communicating better, guys are flying around.”

“The plays are coming to us now. Do your job and good things will happen. You stay in your gap and the ball will come.”

While the Bombers have the advantage of coming off a bye week and getting well-rested, that’s balanced by the Stampeders coming into this game as the CFL’s hottest team. The defending Grey Cup Champs have hit their stride just before the midway point, grinding out a 34-31 road win over the Riders a week after toppling Ottawa 48-3.

Now out of Cornish's shadow, can the Calgary Dinos product finally prove he can be an elite CFL running back?

The Stampeders haven’t been as prolific as usual with Jon Cornish absent from the backfield, currently ranking sixth in the league with 93.1 rushing yards per game. But against the Riders the ground attack was powerful, led by 110 rushing yards by Matt Walter on 20 carries.

Walter and rookie runner Tory Harrison have formed a dual backfield to replace Calgary’s star offensive player and those two will continue to hold the key to the Stamps’ offence moving forward.

“I thought our running game improved as the game went along,” Head Coach and General Manager Jon Hufnagel told Stampeders.com. “They’re two very talented running backs so it’s nice to have a mixture in there.”

“Whether it’s Jon or Matt and now it’s Matt and Tory, they both bring different elements to the game.”

Walter has averaged 4.9 yards per carry as the focal point in Calgary’s backfield, and the 26-year-old feels he’s only just getting started – that he’s getting an opportunity and now it’s time to run with it.

“The guys up front were making gaps, and when you make that happen it’s easy to exploit that,” said Walter of his performance against Saskatchewan. “Once you do that a few times it comes easier as you go. We were able to take advantage of what the defence was giving us and we did a great job up front.”

“I think there’s more potential that I can reach here, so I’m looking forward to doing that,” he added.

Quarterback Mitchell is again emerging as an MOP candidate, albeit late this season after a slow start, currently owning a 97.4 quarterback rating with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions to go with 2,168 yards – fourth in the CFL.

And outside of that, the Stamps quietly own the league’s third best defence and sit in the top four in virtually every major category.

In short, Calgary is hitting its form. Now the Stamps face another test against a Bomber team that put them in a 16-0 hole earlier this season, requiring a 40-yard field goal by Rene Paredes to give them the win with 2:14 left in the game.

“It’s a one-game season,” said Stamps veteran defender Keon Raymond. “Our focus is make sure we come out and we play our best football no matter who is up. It just so happens to be Winnipeg and we know they’re coming off their bye week, they’re fresh.”

“I know they’re going to by flying around and it’s going to be a hostile crowd. It’s going to be loud so we have to make sure we come out and play together and have that mentality we had last week, us against the world.”

- Eric Rogers has scored a receiving touchdown in six straight games, the first player since Weston Dressler late in 2012 to accomplish the feat.

- Rogers also has nine touchdowns in his first 10 career CFL games, the second-best start to a career in CFL history behind Curtis Mayfield’s 12 in 10 games with Las Vegas in 1994.

Preview: Liberty (19-8) at Sun (12-16)

The New York Liberty cemented their spot in the postseason Friday night. It's looking very unlikely that their next opponent will join them.

The two teams on opposite ends of the Eastern Conference meet Saturday night in Connecticut with the Liberty fresh off the high of clinching a playoff spot and the Sun looking to snap a season-defining six-game losing streak.

The Liberty (19-8) secured their first postseason berth since 2012 with a convincing 81-68 home win over West-leading Minnesota on Friday night.

New York, 2 1/2 games up on Chicago in the East, holds the WNBA's top record with seven games left, and leads the Lynx by two in the loss column. The WNBA's top teams play again Sept. 6 in Minnesota.

New York natives Epiphanny Prince and Tina Charles led the way in the first matchup. Prince had 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting and Charles finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds for her 10th double-double.

Charles, averaging 20.5 points over her last six games, joined her hometown team in 2014, while Prince came home this season.

'It's really special for me,' Charles told the team's official website. 'I haven't been in the playoffs the last two or three years, but it means more with this franchise. Being home, Epiphanny and I have always dreamed of winning the championship here and now we're one step closer.'

The Sun (12-16) have taken several steps back this month, falling into a tie with Atlanta for last place in the East - 4 1/2 back of Washington for the final playoff spot with six games left.

Connecticut fell by an average of 11.4 points during the first five defeats of its current skid, the first of which was a 90-78 home loss to New York on Aug. 14. The loss to Phoenix on Thursday arguably hurt the most, an 81-80 heartbreaker on a Leilani Mitchell 3-pointer at the buzzer.

The Liberty have won their last four matchups against the Sun, including the first two this season. They're 9-5 on the road and had a three-game winning streak away from home snapped with an 80-79 loss on Sunday at Indiana.

The Sun are 7-8 at Mohegan Sun Arena, including three straight losses.

Prince had 23 points, seven rebounds, six assists and six steals in New York's win over Connecticut on Aug. 14, while Charles poured in a season-high 31 points. Connecticut's Alex Bentley and Kelsey Bone scored 19 and 17 points, respectively.

Charles had a game-high 22 points and 12 rebounds in a 64-57 win over the Sun on July 16 in New York.

'We still have seven games left so a lot can happen,' Charles said. 'We just need to take care of every game.'

Preview: Sky (17-11) at Dream (12-16)

The Chicago Sky failed to reach the playoffs in their first seven seasons in the WNBA, finishing below .500 each year.

They've recorded the second-most wins in franchise history in 2015, and another victory Saturday night against the Atlanta Dream could put Chicago in the postseason for the third straight year.

The Sky went 89-149 from 2006-12 before drafting Elena Delle Donne with the second overall pick in 2013, when they set a team record by going 24-10 and finishing first in the Eastern Conference.

Chicago, though, was swept in the semifinals and finished under .500 again in 2014. However, that 15-19 record was good enough for fourth place in the East and the Sky went on a shocking playoff run that ended with Phoenix sweeping them in the WNBA Finals.

They have a 17-11 record this year and can return to the postseason with a victory over the Dream (12-16) and a Connecticut loss to conference-leading New York on Saturday.

The biggest reasons for that success are the play of MVP front-runner Delle Donne and veteran guard Cappie Pondexter. Delle Donne tops the league with 23.9 points per game and is among the leaders with an average of 8.8 rebounds, while Pondexter is second on the team with 14.7 points a contest.

"In this league, you don't see too many 6-foot-5 players who are able to shoot the 3, pull up or handle the ball the way (Delle Donne) does," Pondexter, in her first season with Chicago, told the team's official website.

"And on the defensive side of things, she can actually defend all five players. She's an incredible shot blocker."

Delle Donne had four blocks Sunday and Pondexter made a layup with 6 seconds left to give the Sky their second straight win, 66-64 at Washington.

The Dream are all too familiar with Delle Donne's stellar play.

She had 26 points and 10 rebounds in a 74-73 loss at Atlanta on June 19 before scoring a career-high 45 with 11 boards and six blocks in a 100-96 overtime victory at home five days later.

In the third matchup, Delle Donne had 27 points, eight rebounds and blocked four shots in a 97-92 home win July 21.

Angel McCoughtry hit a 16-foot jumper at the buzzer to give Atlanta the win in the first meeting and scored 34 in the overtime game, but she shot 6 for 17 and was in foul trouble in last month's matchup.

McCoughtry struggled again Friday at Indiana, shooting 3 for 12, but the Dream used a 29-17 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter to beat the Fever 90-84 for their season-high third straight win and fourth in five games.

Tiffany Hayes led the way with a career-best 28 points for Atlanta, which remained 4 1/2 games behind the Mystics for the final playoff spot in the East. The result also moved Chicago into a tie with Indiana for second place, 2 1/2 behind the Liberty.

Preseason Week 3 Essentials

Saturday, Aug. 29

Pittsburgh at Buffalo: Losing Pouncey is a massive blow, as centers of his caliber are hard to come by. Getting new starter Cody Wallace up to speed at such a key position will now be the main focus of the offense between now and the season opener. Fortunately, he does have experience. Bills head coach Rex Ryan hasn’t announced a starting QB for this one, which is setting up as the final battle before Matt Cassel or Tyrod Taylor is handed the reins.

N.Y. Jets at N.Y. Giants: Snoopy Bowl 2015 features a pair of 1-1 teams that have each seen their share of struggles thus far. Injuries have played a large role in the shaky starts for both MetLife Stadium tenants, so it will be fun to see how they respond in a game that always seems to be competitive since both teams typically want the back page spoils.

Atlanta at Miami: The Falcons haven’t had running backs Davonte Freeman and Tevin Coleman in either preseason game and are hoping those guys can each gain some seasoning in South Florida. QB Ryan Tannehill’s improvement has the Dolphins excited. He’s led the Fins to touchdowns in three of his four drives.

Minnesota at Dallas: After Tony Romo made a cameo in San Francisco on Sunday, he will undoubtedly get his longest in-game workload of the preseason here. Adrian Peterson will sit out another game, but the Vikings have averaged 23 points per game without him as the passing game has looked sharp.

Cleveland at Tampa Bay: Ex-Buc starter Josh McCown is nursing an injured ring finger and backup Johnny Manziel had to cut Sunday’s practice short due to a sore elbow, so this could wind up being a difficult trip for the winless Browns. Rookie starting QB Jameis Winston should get plenty of varied defensive looks to work against, which can only aid his development.

Washington at Baltimore: Remember when we all doubted Joe Flacco? It wasn’t that long ago, so you should. Heck, there are still people who think it’s funny to debate whether the Super Bowl XLVII MVP is an elite quarterback. He plays like one, is paid like one and comes off posting career-highs in passing yards (3,986) and TD throws (27), so the answer is yes. On the other end of the spectrum is Robert Griffin III, who is both polarizing and currently mediocre despite all the hype. Sadly, new Ravens backup Matt Schaub is more accomplished than either or RG III or Kirk Cousins, which has to keep owner Dan Snyder up at night.

Chicago at Cincinnati: After playing at Tampa on Monday night, the Bengals turn right around and host the Bears, so it will be interesting to see how head coach Marvin Lewis treats this game. The Bears’ depth has been impressive so far this preseason, as they’ve outscored opponents 38-0 in the second half of games thanks to the play of their backups. With Jay Cutler scheduled to play into the second half, Chicago is looking for him to lead the team to its first touchdown after coming up empty in the first two games.

Philadelphia at Green Bay: The Packers are reeling from the loss of Nelson and have probably seen enough out of Rodgers that they won’t see the value in exposing him here, but backup Scott Tolzien was also banged up in Pittsburgh, suffering a concussion. Chip Kelly’s desire to see Sam Bradford take more live-action snaps may be dwarfed by the need to keep him healthy and confident, so be sure to monitor this situation.

Indianapolis at St. Louis: Both of these teams have struggled mightily so far, but there’s no panic setting. The Colts will be looking to see how their o-line holds up against the Rams’ primary strength. St. Louis will be looking to get Nick Foles on track after a dreadful start thus far.

Seattle at San Diego: This one is slated for a national broadcast and should be entertaining. The Seahawks have predictably not looked like themselves given the rebuilt offensive line and the absence of Legion of Boom members in the secondary, so 0-2 isn’t a big deal. Pete Carroll will want to see improvement against a Chargers squad that will allow Philip Rivers to participate for the first time since he went 2-for-2 on the opening drive of the team’s preseason.

San Francisco at Denver: QB Peyton Manning wasn’t able to get a rhythm in his debut, coming up empty on four drives while racking up just 67 yards on 19 plays in Houston. Count on him playing into the second half here as he seeks to gain his footing in Gary Kubiak’s new offense. Colin Kaepernick is 4-for-8 for 27 yards in limited action, so the 49ers are looking forward to seeing how he fares with a heavier workload.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Tom Brady overcame two early interceptions to lead his first touchdown drive of the preseason as the New England Patriots beat the Carolina Panthers 17-16 on Friday night.

The preseason has been a titanic struggle for Brady, who is awaiting word on his appeal of a four-game suspension for his role in ''Deflategate.''

After managing just three first downs in his first 11 preseason possessions, Brady finally got on track, leading an 80-yard scoring drive before halftime running the hurry-up offense. He capped the drive with a well-placed 18-yard touchdown pass to tight end Scott Chandler.

The Patriots played again without tight end Rob Gronkowski and wide receivers Brandon LaFell and Julian Edelman.

Carolina managed just two field goals in the first half behind Cam Newton and trailed 7-6 at halftime. Corey Brown bobbled away an easy TD pass from Newton - one of four Carolina drops in the first half.

LIONS 22, JAGUARS 17

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Matthew Stafford completed 11 of 15 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns. The Lions (2-1) trailed most of the night, but rookie Zach Zenner's 3-yard touchdown run with 1:41 remaining was the winner.

Detroit played without star receiver Calvin Johnson for the third consecutive game, but Stafford carved up Jacksonville's secondary in a half of work. Stafford threw a perfect deep ball to Golden Tate for a 62-yarder in the second quarter and then hooked up with Corey Fuller for a 4-yard score.

Zenner had a 41-yard scamper that set up Fuller's score. He finished with 85 yards on eight carries.

Blake Bortles was the story again for Jacksonville (1-2). He completed 20 of 29 passes for 245 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 38 yards, including two third-down scrambles that kept scoring drives alive.

CHIEFS 34, TITANS 10

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Alex Smith threw for 171 yards and two touchdowns in less than a half, and the Chiefs' offense looked the sharpest it has all preseason in a weather-shortened game.

The game was called with 3 minutes, 50 seconds remaining after thunder rumbled and lightning streaked across the sky. Heavy rains had turned one end zone into a lake.

Smith was 16 of 18 before giving way to third-string quarterback Aaron Murray just before halftime. Murray played the rest of the game for the Chiefs (3-0), throwing for 146 yards with two touchdown passes and an interception as backup Chase Daniel got the night off.

Marcus Mariota got off to a slow start for Tennessee (1-2), misfiring on his first three throws. But the first-round pick out of Oregon was 7 of 8 for 99 yards the rest of the half.
