    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Phillies' attendance is down 19,000 a game from three years ago.

-- Johnny Manziel (elbow) won't play in Browns' last two preseason games, which makes it obvious that Josh McCown will be the Browns' #1 QB in two weeks.

-- Angels are 4-13 in last 17 road games; their series win at Detroit was their first road series win since July 7-8 in Denver.

-- RIP Darryl Dawkins, whose thunderous dunks helped bring about the collapsible rims you see on baskets today.

-- Eagles-Packers total was 49 Thursday morning, was later bet down to 48; 49 was going to be the highest total in an NFL exhibition game since at least 2004.

-- Yasmani Grandal grounded into three double plays yesterday, the first Dodger to do that since Milton Bradley in 2004.

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here.......

    13) Texas Rangers' TV analyst (former GM) Tom Grieve was pleading with fans not to reach for broken bats that fly into the stands, since they could get hurt. Grieve will be happy to learn the Phillies will be the first team to extend netting behind home plate to beyond the dugouts down each line. Someone was going to get hurt badly otherwise.

    12) Grieve was saying that it was foolish to reach for a broken bat "since it is worthless and can hurt you". Well, those broken bats that don't fly into the stands find their way into the team's gift shop, where they get sold for at least $100 each. Not worthless.

    11) Also in Philadelphia, a young boy had a double hand transplant; was cool seeing his face as he used his new hands (with casts on) for the first time. Imagine being the surgeon who gives a little kid the use of hands? Must be an excellent feeling.

    10) Curt Schilling has apparently been suspended by ESPN for a controversial tweet earlier this week. So much for freedom of speech, it doesn't exist too much anymore. Who gives a rat's ass what Schilling says about anything? He has the right to express any beliefs he has, even if they're offensive. Thats what America is all about, at least that is what it is supposed to be about..

    9) White Sox are 60-66, a disappointing team, but they're 26-15 in games where the winning run scores from the 7th inning on. Not sure if that pins the blame on starting pitchers, or on the starting lineup not hitting well early in games. It kind of gets manager Robin Ventura off the hook a little bit, since he fares well in close games.

    8) White Sox wore 1976 throwback uniforms last night, the white jerseys with dark blue lettering and collars. Yes, collars. I actually thought they were kind of sharp.

    7) Lot of rumors that Cavaliers may hold Kyrie Irving (broken kneecap) out until after Christmas; he hurt his knee in the first game of the NBA Finals. Would be a big loss for Cleveland. Irving seems to get hurt a lot.

    6) HBO's Hard Knocks should be very interesting next week; three days after Brian Hoyer was named Houston's starting QB, backup Ryan Mallett missed practice, and the team said "he overselpt", to which I call BS. NFL quarterbacks do not oversleep, because teams have employees who would wake them up. He is mad because he isn't the starter and now the team has a problem on its hands.

    5) Not sure why I thought of this today but I did; in 1987, I went to a Cardinal-Met doubleheader at Shea Stadium; our seats were good, second level just to first base side of home plate.

Early in the first game, Mets SS Kevin Elster hits a foul ball and the guy three seats to my left catches the ball. No big deal, but next time Elster comes up, same pitcher on mound, Elster hits another foul ball, right to the same guy sitting three seats to my left.. What are the odds of that?

    4) Reliever Steve Cishek pitched in 32 games for Miami this year, putting 51 men on base in 32 IP, 19 of whom scored, so the Marlins traded him to first-place St Louis, where he has pitched in 13 games, putting 13 men on base in 11.1 IP, only one of whom scored. Why do guys play better for one team than another? Is it explainable?

    3) Long time ago, there used to be a gameshow called Password, where one partner would give word clues to his partner, trying to get him/her to say the "password". When I heard about the Derrick Rose he says/she says rape debacle yesterday, the first thing that came into my head was something like this........

"Allen, players, you at home....the password is........'extortion'"

    2) In order for players to be playoff eligible, they have to be on their team's 40-man roster before the calendar turns to September, so we figure to see some deals made between now and Monday night. Fernando Rodney was dealt to the Cubs last night, in on eof the first trades like that-- there figure to be more.

    1) Now there are rumors that the Redskins' offensive line doesn't like Robert Griffin III and that he didn't have a concussion two weeks ago, they were just using it as an excuse so he didn't have to talk to the press. How can they ever play him now? This is a complete disaster; what other team would be stupid enough to trade for him?

MLB roundup: Dodgers, Greinke blank Reds

CINCINNATI -- Zack Greinke allowed four hits in seven innings, and Yasmani Grandal drove in the lone run with a bases-loaded grounder, lifting the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 1-0 victory and a three-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday afternoon at Great American Ball Park.

Andre Ethier went 3-for-3 for the Dodgers, who swept a series in Cincinnati for the first time since 2008.

Greinke struck out nine and walked two for Los Angeles, which has won three straight games since snapping a five-game losing skid on Tuesday. Jim Johnson posted his 10th save with a perfect ninth inning.

Grandal marked his return to the lineup with a bases-loaded double-play grounder to drive in a run, putting the Dodgers ahead 1-0 in the second inning.

            Giants 9, Cubs 1

SAN FRANCISCO -- Madison Bumgarner struck out 12 batters in six innings for the first time in his career, pitching San Francisco over Chicago and a 2-1 series win in a battle between National League playoff contenders.

Marlon Byrd smacked a three-run homer in the third inning and Kelby Tomlinson hit his first major league homer -- an eighth-inning grand slam -- for the Giants.

The win, the Giants' 15th in their last 18 home games, allowed them to remain 2 1/2 games behind the National League West-leading Dodgers. The Cubs dropped their second in a row and fell 3 1/2 games behind Pittsburgh for the NL's first wild-card spot.

            Royals 5, Orioles 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Yordano Ventura struck out 11 and Paulo Orlando homered as Kansas City beat Baltimore.

The Royals took three of four from the Orioles and have not lost a series since dropping two of three in Detroit on Aug. 4-6. Kansas City has won nine of its last 10 games against its 2014 American League Championship Series opponent.

Ventura, who has not lost since July 20, allowed two singles and four walks but needed 98 pitches to get through six scoreless innings.

            Angels 2, Tigers 0

DETROIT -- Matt Shoemaker returned from the minors and gave up one hit in 7 1/3 innings as Los Angeles beat Detroit.

Shoemaker, a Michigan native, was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday. The only Tiger to reach base against him was Anthony Gose, who singled in the third and walked in the sixth. Gose was picked off and caught stealing to end those innings.

Albert Pujols drove in a run with a sixth-inning single and Shane Victorino added a ninth-inning sacrifice fly for the Angels. Huston Street pitched the ninth for his 31st save.

            Rangers 4, Blue Jays 1

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Yovani Gallardo collected his 100th career victory and Texas used an error by Jose Bautista to score three runs in the seventh inning against Toronto.

Gallardo became the fourth Mexican-born pitcher to win 100 career games, joining Ismael Valdez (104), Esteban Loaiza (126) and Fernando Valenzuela (176). Gallardo pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings and gave up three hits and three walks while striking out two. Shawn Tolleson pitched a scoreless ninth for his 26th save.

Delino DeShields, who scored the game's first run on Mitch Moreland's run-scoring single in the first inning, had two hits, including a single in the seventh that led to three runs.

            Pirates 2, Marlins 1

MIAMI -- Gerrit Cole earned his 15th win of the season, and Pedro Alvarez homered to lead Pittsburgh past Miami.

Cole, an All-Star who lost his previous three decisions, improved to 15-7, allowing five hits, no walks and one run in 7 1/3 innings. It was his first win since July 26.

Alvarez hit a fourth-inning solo homer off Justin Nicolino (2-2) over the 418-foot sign in center field. It was his 21st homer of the season but just his third off a left-handed pitcher.

            Rays 5, Twins 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Joey Butler hit a game-tying single and scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball as Tampa Bay earned a win over Minnesota.

Brandon Gomes (2-4) pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win. Brad Boxberger struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth inning for his 31st save.

Twins starter Tommy Milone (6-4) gave up five runs (four earned) on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.

            Nationals 4, Padres 2

WASHINGTON -- Rookie Joe Ross allowed just one unearned run in six innings, and Jayson Werth and Ryan Zimmerman hit late solo homers for insurance as Washington beat San Diego.

Werth hit a solo homer in the sixth to give the Nationals a 3-1 lead, and Zimmerman made it 4-1 with a solo homer to lead off the seventh.

Bryce Harper had two hits and reached base his first four at-bats for the Nationals. Werth, Zimmerman (two RBIs) and Anthony Rendon each had two hits in support of Ross (5-5), who allowed just one bunt hit while striking out seven.

            White Sox 4, Mariners 2

CHICAGO -- Carlos Rodon allowed just two runs in six-plus innings, and Chicago beat Seattle in the opener of a four-game weekend series.

Rodon (6-5) struck out five, walked three and allowed three hits before yielding to the bullpen. Four White Sox relievers combined to throw three scoreless innings, with David Robertson closing it out in the ninth for his 27th save.

Adam Eaton went 3-for-3, reached base safely in all four plate appearances and scored three runs.

Athletics have been cashing as road favorites

It has been a disappointing season for the Oakland Athletics, but at least they've been cashing for their backers as road favorites lately, going 7-0 in their last seven games when that is the case.

They will be facing some slight chalk Friday when they begin an interleague series with in Arizona against the Diamondbacks, currently listed at -114.

Blue Jays giving Dickey support, leading to wins

Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey has been solid this season for the Blue Jays, but has needed some support from his bats recently and they have delivered.

The Jays are scoring 7.14 runs per game in his last seven starts, all resulting in Toronto wins.

Dickey gets the call tonight as the Blue Jays open a home series against the visiting Detroit Tigers and lefty Matt Boyd.

Mets beating up on bad teams

The New York Mets are not taking mercy when they take on lesser teams, going 22-4 in their last 26 games against teams with a losing record.

The Mets welcome the AL East basement dwelling Boston Red Sox to town for a three-game interleague series.

The Mets are currently heavy -199 favorites as they send Matt Harvey (11-7, 2.57 ERA) to the hill to take on the Red Sox Henry Owens (2-1, 4.50 ERA).

Friday's NFL Week 3 preseason betting primer

The third week of the NFL preseason kicks off with a trio of games Friday evening. With three games on the schedule and training camp injuries claiming plenty of players already, it can be hard to stay on top of the action.

New England Patriots at Carolina Panthers (PK, 44)

                      * Tom Brady hasn't exactly been lighting things up in his, albeit, brief time on the field this preseason. In five preseason possessions, Brady has gone just 3-of-9 for 23 yards with just one first down. The Pats are 1-1 SU and ATS in their opening two games with Friday's game currently a Pick.

                      * According to The Charlotte Observer's Jonathan Jones, Panthers head coach Ron Rivera is planning to let his starters play into the third quarter tonight. Rivera says that 35 to 40 plays would be "perfect" for his team and is hoping for them to come out after the half to play one series.

Detroit Lions at Jacksonville Jaguars (-2, 40.5)

                      * Even though some Lions starters may play into the second half this evening, wide receiver Calvin Johnson may not play at all against the Jags. “Not quite certain if you’re going to see him at all,” head coach Jim Caldwell said Wednesday. “There’s no guarantees at this point.”

                      * Rookie running back T.J. Yeldon looks set to make his debut with the Lions in town. The Alabama product missed out on the first two games of the preseason with a strained finger. ESPN.com's Mike DiRocco says that the rook will get around 5-10 touches with the first team.

Tennessee Titans at Kansas City Chiefs (-5, 42)

                      * According to a tweet from Ed Werder, Titans QB Marcus Mariota could get some plenty of time Friday.

                      * The Chiefs' offensive line will continue to be without Eric Fisher (high-ankle sprain) and Jeff Allen (knee). Fisher was injured during practice last Monday while Allen suffered his knee injury in the Chiefs' 34-19 win over the Arizona Cardinals in their preseason opener.
