    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Random notes on college football bowl games........

-- Sugar Bowl last three years was won SU by underdogs of 8-15-14 points.

-- UL-Lafayette won New Orleans Bowl last four years; they were underdogs in three of the four games.

-- Favorite won/covered the last four Heart of Dallas Bowls.

-- Same thing for the Belk Bowl in Charlotte; favorites won/covered last four.

-- Underdogs won SU in four of last five Quick Lane Bowls (Detroit).

-- Michigan State won its last four bowls, all by 4 or less points; they were the dog in all four games.

    **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Hump Day Happenings.........

    13) My high school Chemistry teacher used to use a word: "nonsensical". He used it when he was annoyed or amazed by the stupidity of people, usually one of us back then. These days, he probably uses the word a lot.

Boston Red Sox fired their TV play-by-play guy this week. Don Orsillo has been the TV voice of the Red Sox for 15 years (his first game was Hideo Nomo's no-hitter). He is smart, funny and once had to endure 26 different partners in one season when his usual partner had some personal problems. He works playoff games for TBS, that is how good an announcer he is. Firing him is 100% nonsensical.

    12) Red Sox TV ratings are down because the team on the field sucks and people are mainly frontrunners. Orsillo will land on his feet because he is very good at what he does, but office politics are hideous and this is a prime example of that.

    11) Jeb Bush's wife is Mexican-American; Mr Bush can speak Spanish, which he did at an event near the Texas/Mexico border earlier this week. Of course, Donald Trump is making fun of him for it. If somehow Trump becomes President, the main question will be whether we get in a war with another country before a Civil War starts here.

    10) Sign of the times: apparently Jeb Bush lost 40 pounds recently, in an attempt to look more telegenic for the campaign. It is sad that something like that matters.

    9) Pro wrestler Jon Cena is first athlete to grant 500 requests for the Make-a-Wish program; he played football at Springfield College and is very, very generous with his time for charity. Not sure why Jon Stewart hit him with a chair last week, but Cena got his revenge at Summer Slam, so its all good. :-)

    8) Mets #1-7 hitters all hit home runs Monday night, the first time that has ever been done in a major league game- they're 5.5 games up on Washington in NL East.

    7) Basketball guru Howard Garkinkel has a coaching clinic here in the Albany area on September 19 at Shenendehowa HS. Sean Miller, Jay Wright, Tom Thibodeau, Jim Calhoun are among the speakers. Lot of knowledge in that group.

    6) Doing college football prep this month, I laughed looking at a Washington State-Cal boxscore from LY. Cal won 60-59, but Wazzu passed for 734 yards and ran for 78 more, and they still lost!!!! Yikes. Teams meet again in Berkeley October 3.

    5) OL Evan Mathis turned down $5.5M from the Eagles and instead signs with Denver for $2.5M (plus another possible $1.5M in incentives). Peyton Manning is an immobile QB who needs a solid OL; he took a $4M pay cut after last season and that money is what Mathis is getting paid with.

    4) Steelers signed Michael Vick as their backup QB; not sure what to say about this, other than Big Ben better not get hurt. Vick was stealing money with the Jets the last couple of years, even admitting his prep work wasn't what it should be. Oy.

    3) One more Red Sox note: Apparently Hanley Ramirez will be a 1B next season, which shouldn't be too difficult for a former SS, but you watch him play and he just doesn't look like a guy who cares much about defense. He is on the books thru 2018 to the tune of $22.75M a year; they better find somewhere to hide him in the field.

    2) Richard Pitino signs a contract extension at Minnesota thru the 2021 season; I'm wondering what the odds are that Pitino will still be there six years from now? If he wins at Minnesota, will he jump for greener (warmer) pastures and if he loses, well all the coaches who lose get fired. It is part of the job.

    1) Watching HBO's Hard Knocks (a very well done show), I'm curious why coach Bill O'Brien left Penn State for the insecurity of the NFL. Bigtime college programs are pretty secure jobs, especially at Penn State, where they're rebuilding from the scandal that ended Joe Paterno's career. O'Brien seems like a good guy; was just wondering.

These MLB clubs are runaway money makers when betting the runline
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bettors should be paying particular attention to the fact that big profits have been there for the taking when it comes to Texas, Minnesota and Tampa Bay on the runline this season.

The bulk of our season-long MLB betting analysis focuses on specific trends as they pertain to wagering on the moneyline, since it’s the most popular selection for baseball bettors. However, we’re going to shift gears for a bit to talk about the runline, which is essentially baseball’s way of incorporating a pointspread.

How it works is quite simple, as the favorite is listed at -1.5 runs while the underdog is posted at +1.5 runs. Betting the favorite means you have to win by two or more runs, while supporting the dog requires a worst-case-scenario loss of no greater than one run.

Many bettors prefer to take advantage of the runline as opposed to the moneyline because it offers up the opportunity to bet on favorites with less risk. For example, starting pitcher Jacob deGrom and the Mets were posted as -250 moneyline favorites for their showdown with Philadelphia (+210) Monday night. But the runline offered the opportunity to play New York -1.5 at the more reasonable price of -130, with the Phillies available to purchase at +1.5, +120.

As it relates to the 2015 MLB season, let’s commence our analysis by examining which clubs have performed at the most profitable of levels in regards to the runline:

Stats and record as of August 15, 2015.

Top-5 MLB runline teams (PLAY ON)

            1. Texas Rangers: 75-48 (.610)
            2. Minnesota Twins: 73-51 (.589)
            3. Kansas City Royals: 69-54 (.561)
            T4. Tampa Bay Rays: 69-55 (.556)
            T4. Toronto Blue Jays: 69-55 (.556)
            T4. San Francisco Giants: 69-55 (.556)

It comes as no surprise to see Kansas City and Toronto on this list, as both clubs not only sit atop their respective divisions at the moment, but are a combined 42 games over .500 entering Tuesday’s slate of action.

In addition, the defending champion San Francisco Giants may find themselves 1.5 games out in the National League West, but the Orange & Black currently rank seventh in run differential.

What bettors should be paying particular attention to is the fact that big profits have been there for the taking when it comes to Texas, Minnesota and Tampa Bay, who are a combined six games over .500 through approximately 124 games of action. That’s the type of runline production that pads a bankroll.

Bottom-5 MLB runline teams (PLAY AGAINST)

            1. Seattle Mariners: 52-72 (.419)
            T2. Washington Nationals: 52-70 (.431)
            T2. Los Angeles Dodgers: 53-70 (.431)
            4. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim: 54-70 (.435)
            5. Boston Red Sox: 55-69 (.444)

At 12 games under .500 despite a Top-5 payroll, the Red Sox have been an absolute dumpster fire this season. Similar sentiments can be echoed regarding the Mariners, who were a very popular World Series pick prior to the start of the 2015 campaign.

Where the real money has been available for the taking has been in fading current playoff contenders the Nationals, Dodgers and Angels. Despite owning a collective mark of 14 games above .500, those clubs combine for a staggering 51 games under .500 in regards to the runline.

To put that in perspective, it’s been just as lucrative this season betting on the Minnesota runline as it has been wagering against the Washington runline.

Top-5 MLB runline teams coming off a win (PLAY ON)

            1. San Francisco Giants: 42-24 (.636)
            2. Minnesota Twins: 39-23 (.629)
            3. Texas Rangers: 39-24 (.619)
            4. Houston Astros: 41-28 (.594)
            5. Tampa Bay Rays: 36-26 (.581)

Four repeat offenders appear on this list just as they did the Top-5 list above, but the important note to take away from this information is as follows: Not only are these five clubs producing significant profits as it relates to runline bets following a win, but three of them (San Francisco, Minnesota and Texas) are cashing at the highly lucrative rate of more than 60 percent. When these organizations win, they tend to do so in bunches.

Bottom-5 MLB runline teams coming off a win (PLAY AGAINST)

            1. Seattle Mariners: 19-37 (.339)
            2. Los Angeles Dodgers: 26-41 (.388)
            3. Boston Red Sox: 22-34 (.393)
            4. Cleveland Indians: 23-35 (.397)
            5. Oakland A’s: 22-31 (.415)

Eliminate the Oakland A’s and you’re left with four teams who are providing returns of 60 percent of higher when it comes to fading a club on the runline following a win. That’s the type of profitability that puts one in excellent position for the start of football season in September.

Top-5 MLB runline teams when playing on the road (PLAY ON)

            1. Texas Rangers: 48-17 (.738)
            2. Tampa Bay Rays: 39-23 (.629)
            3. Minnesota Twins: 38-24 (.613)
            4. Arizona Diamondbacks: 38-26 (.594)
            5. New York Mets: 36-25 (.590)

A warm welcome to the Diamondbacks and Mets for making an appearance in this column, but don’t lose sight of what’s really important here: In this wagering subset, the Texas Rangers are winning at the astronomical rate of 73.8 percent. Not only that, but once again, Tampa Bay and Minnesota are producing returns north of 60 percent. These are certainly three teams worth monitoring very closely over the rest of the regular season.

Bottom-5 MLB runline teams when playing on the road (PLAY AGAINST)

            1. Los Angeles Dodgers: 21-40 (.344)
            2. Washington Nationals: 29-37 (.439)
            3. Philadelphia Phillies: 30-36 (.455)
            4. Pittsburgh Pirates: 28-31 (.475)
            5. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim: 28-30 (.483)

We’ve already discussed how surprising it is to see playoff contenders like the Nationals and the Dodgers on this list, and it’s as equally unsurprising to observe a bottom-dweller like Philadelphia make an appearance on a bottom-5 gambling rundown. But how about the Pittsburgh Pirates?

Andrew McCutchen & Co. currently rank third in MLB in total wins and fifth in run differential while owning an ultra-impressive 44-20 mark when playing within the friendly confines of PNC Park. Despite all the success the Pirates have enjoyed this season, the Bucs are still three games under .500 when it comes to runline road wagers. Be sure to keep this in mind as the playoff push heats up in September.

Stay patient, pick your spots and best of luck this week!

McHugh dealing, but Astros supplying no run support

Through four starts in August, Collin McHugh has been lights out, but the Houston Astros are just 1-3 in those games. McHugh has a stellar 1.67 ERA with a 28/8 strikeout-to-walk ratio so far this month.

However those four games have seen the 'Stros score a combined seven runs, including just three in the three losses.

McHugh and the Astros face off against the Yankees Wednesday in New York.

Hernandez is struggling mightly this month

In case you somehow missed it, Felix Hernandez has looked rather pedestrian in his recent outings. In August so far, Hernandez has posted an 8.18 ERA while allowing 20 earned runs over 22.0 innings pitched.

The Mariners have managed to go 2-2 in those four starts despite Hernandez' struggles. The former Cy Young winner entered the month with a 3.02 ERA and has since jumped to 3.74.

The M' will host the Oakland A's Wednesday.

Rays 1B Loney suspended one game

Tampa Bay Rays first baseman James Loney was suspended for one game and fined an undisclosed amount on Tuesday for bumping an umpire during Saturday's game against the Oakland Athletics.

The suspension and fine was announced by Joe Garagiola Jr., senior vice president of standdards and on-field operations for Major League Baseball. Loney made contact with home-plate umpire Paul Nauert after a called third strike.

Loney was to serve the suspension on Tuesday night when the Rays play the Minnesota Twins, but he appealed the ruling and the penalty will be delayed until he receives a hearing.

In 71 games this season, Loney is hitting .260 with four homers and 24 RBIs.

MLB roundup: Blue Jays edge Rangers in AL showdown

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Toronto Blue Jays rallied for two runs with two outs in the ninth inning to beat the Texas Rangers 6-5 on Tuesday night.

The win moved the Blue Jays 15 games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 1993 season.

Tuesday's win came in dramatic fashion as Toronto scored against Texas closer Shawn Tolleson, who was 25-for-26 in save situations coming into the game.

Two walks hurt Tolleson, and then Toronto shortstop Troy Tulowitzki tied the game at 5 by flipping a full-count single to left field.

The Rangers then took the lead when Josh Donaldson reached on throwing error by Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre, which allowed Ben Revere to score the winning run.

Roberto Osuna closed out the game for his 15th save. LaTroy Hawkins (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth to earn the win.

                Astros 15, Yankees 1

NEW YORK -- Houston posted its largest margin of victory in five years, routing the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

Evan Gattis, Marwin Gonzalez and Carlos Gomez homered for Houston, which piled up 15 hits, eight of them for extra bases.

Gattis and Gomez each drove in four runs, and Gonzalez and catcher Jason Castro each had three hits.

                Marlins 5, Pirates 2

MIAMI -- Brad Hand pitched eight strong innings, and Dee Gordon stole four bases and scored two runs, leading Miami over Pittsburgh.

Hand walked none and scattered nine hits, striking out five and allowing two runs. Gordon's steals tied his career high, and first baseman Justin Bour added a pair of run-scoring doubles.

After Hand allowed two consecutive hits to lead off the ninth, closer A.J. Ramos entered and recorded his 22nd save of the season. Ramos allowed only one of his inherited runners to score.

                Twins 11, Rays 7

TAMPA -- Miguel Sano hit a three-run homer in the first inning to lead an offensive surge by Minnesota in a victory over Tampa Bay at Tropicana Field.

Brian Dozier and Eddie Rosario also homered for the Twins, as they continue to pursue the Texas Rangers for the second wild card spot in the American League.

Twins reliever J.R. Graham gave up a run in 2/3 innings of relief to pick up his first win of the season against one loss.

                Angels 8, Tigers 7

DETROIT -- Albert Pujols hit a three-run homer and the Los Angeles Angels snapped a four-game losing streak by holding off slumping Detroit at Comerica Park.

The Angels first baseman ripped his team-leading 34th home run in the first inning. Shortstop Erick Aybar contributed three hits, two runs scored and an RBI for Los Angeles, which had lost 12 of its last 13 road games.

Jered Weaver got the victory in the opener of a nine-game road swing despite giving up six runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings. Huston Street recorded the last four outs to record his 30th save.

                Mets 6, Phillies 5

PHILADELPHIA -- Pinch hitter Michael Cuddyer snapped a tie with a two-run single in a three-run sixth inning, and the New York Mets beat Philadelphia.

Yoenis Cespedes homered, and rookie right-hander Noah Syndergaard earned his first road victory of the season for the Mets, who have won five straight and 17 of 23. They maintained a 5 1/2-game lead in the National League East over the Washington Nationals.

Freddy Galvis and Ryan Howard hit two-run homers for the Phillies, who dropped their seventh straight to the Mets and their 11th in their past 12 games against New York.

White Sox 5, Red Sox 4

CHICAGO -- Rookie Trayce Thompson had three hits and drove in three runs -- including the go-ahead two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning -- to lead the Chicago White Sox to a comeback victory over Boston at U.S. Cellular Field.

Jake Petricka pitched a scoreless seventh to get the win. David Robertson pitched the ninth for his 26th save.

Boston starter Wade Miley took the loss after allowing five runs on 13 hits in 6 2/3 innings.

                Royals 3, Orioles 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kendrys Morales homered and Danny Duffy scattered five hits as Kansas City beat Baltimore.

The Royals won their fourth straight and 14th of their last 18 to move 29 games above .500 for the first time since the end of the 1980 season.

Duffy struggled with his control, running several deep counts before running into trouble in sixth.

                Indians 11, Brewers 6

CLEVELAND -- Michael Brantley had three hits, including two home runs, and Jason Kipnis and Francisco Lindor also had three hits each as Cleveland, despite giving up four home runs, beat Milwaukee at Progressive Field.

Jonathan Lucroy belted two home runs, as Milwaukee scored all its runs on the aforementioned home runs.

                Dodgers 5, Reds 1

CINCINNATI -- Jimmy Rollins and Justin Turner homered and left-hander Alex Wood allowed a run in 5 2/3 innings, helping the Los Angeles Dodgers snap a five-game losing streak with a victory over Cincinnati in the opener of a three-game series at Great American Ball Park.

Rollins went 2-for-4 with a double, homer and two RBIs.

Todd Frazier went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a RBI for Cincinnati, which has lost 10 of 11.

                Rockies 5, Braves 1

ATLANTA -- Chad Bettis returned from the disabled list to win his first game since July 12 and second baseman D.J. LeMahieu drove in three runs for Colorado in victory over Atlanta at Turner Field.

Bettis spent more than a month on the disabled list with right elbow inflammation. He returned to pitch five innings and allow one run, five hits and two walks while striking out four. Bettis also picked up his first career base hit.

LeMahieu went 3-for-4 with a sacrifice fly and scored a run. He now has 50 RBIs.

                Nationals 8, Padres 3

WASHINGTON -- Stephen Strasburg allowed just two runs in six innings, Denard Span returned to the lineup and Ryan Zimmerman hit a grand slam as Washington beat San Diego.

Strasburg won for the fourth time in five decisions and had his fourth strong outing in a row since coming off the disabled list earlier this month. He gave up only two hits and struck out seven with one walk and has allowed just four hits in his last 13 innings.

Span, who missed the previous 40 games with back problems, was finally at the leadoff spot again and he drew a nice ovation when he stepped to the plate in the first. Even though he was hitless in four official at-bats, he drew a walk and helped drive up the pitch count of San Diego starter and loser James Shields.

                Mariners 6, A's 5

SEATTLE -- Seattle fell behind 5-0 in the top of the second inning but rallied to score six times in the fourth and fifth to beat Oakland.

Home runs by Nelson Cruz, hit 38th of the season, and Logan Morrison sparked the comeback after Seattle starter Mike Montgomery struggled through the shortest outing of his young career, 1 1/3 innings.

Edgar Olmos (1-0) earned his first career win after pitching 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Olmos came on for Montgomery in the second inning and allowed just three hits.

                Cubs 8, Giants 5

SAN FRANCISCO -- Kyle Schwarber, Miguel Montero and Starlin Castro hit home runs to back the powerful pitching of Jake Arrieta, leading Chicago past San Francisco.

Schwarber belted a three-run shot in the third inning and Montero a two-run blast in the fourth as the Cubs built a 6-0 lead against Matt Cain (2-4) and kept him winless in five starts this month. Castro's home run followed an earlier single and double, giving him three-quarters of a cycle in his first three at-bats.

Arrieta (16-6) became the first 16-game winner in the majors, breezing through six-plus innings en route to his 13th consecutive quality start. He allowed just an unearned run on four hits and one walk. He struck out six.

                Cardinals 9, Diamondbacks 1

PHOENIX -- Jason Heyward drove in two runs and scored twice, and Jaime Garcia gave up one run in six innings as St. Louis routed Arizona.

Heyward's two-run singled sparked a four-run first inning, and Garcia (6-4) improved his career record against Arizona to 5-0 while dropping his ERA to 1.77 in 13 starts this season.

Yadier Molina and Jhonny Peralta drove in two runs apiece, and Tommy Pham had three hits and scored three times as the Cardinals won their third straight.

Game of the Day: Blue Jays at Rangers
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Blue Jays have played eight games against teams in the second AL Wild Card position in August and have won all eight.

Toronto Blue Jays at Texas Rangers (+162, 8.5)

David Price has been spectacular since joining the Toronto Blue Jays last month but he has rarely fared well in Texas, where he will pitch Wednesday in the continuation of a three-game series with the Rangers. Price is 2-4 with a 5.37 ERA in his career against the Rangers, easily his highest ERA against an American League opponent.

Price has been even worse at Globe Life Park in Arlington, where the former Cy Young Award winner has been pounded for 21 runs in 25 2/3 innings across five rocky outings. Price will be tasked with trying to keep alive the latest winning streak for the Blue Jays, who took their fourth straight game by scoring twice in the top of the ninth inning in Tuesday's series opener. The rally gave Toronto a one-game lead in the American League East and dropped the Rangers 4 1/2 back in the West. Texas, which has a half-game lead for the second wild-card spot, has listed second baseman Rougned Odor as day-to-day after he injured his right middle finger fielding a grounder Tuesday.

                      TV:
8:05 p.m. ET, SNET (Toronto), FSN Southwest (Texas)

                      LINE HISTORY:
The Rangers opened in the +152 vicinity, but are now +162. The total has remained at 8.5.

                      INJURY REPORT:
Blue Jays - 2B Devon Travis (15-day DL, shoulder). Rangers - 2B Rougned Odor (Questionable, hand), LF Josh Hamilton (15-day DL, knee).

                      WEATHER:
Temperatures will be in the high-80s under clear skies. Wind will blow in from leftfield at around 6 mph.

                      WHAT CAPPERS SAY:
"Do the Jays deserve to be No. 1 in our Rankings? After all, they passed the Cards in run differential and are now the #1 team in that category in the Majors. But they haven't been able to dominate their division the way the Cards have, so for now, they'll have to settle for tops in the AL. The Rangers continued to show they're serious about trying to win this season as they acquired OF Will Venable from the Padres. It's a minor acquisition, but Venable could be a key addition, especially in light of Josh Hamilton's third trip to the DL this season, last week."

                      PITCHING MATCHUP:
Blue Jays LH David Price (12-4, 2.40 ERA) vs. Rangers RH Colby Lewis (14-5, 4.29)

Price yielded two runs in eight frames in a win over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday to improve to 3-0 with a 1.78 ERA since joining the Blue Jays. That effort also left him 8-2 with a 1.96 mark in 13 road starts this season. Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus has feasted on Price, going 10-for-23 with five RBIs and six walks.

Lewis blanked Detroit over seven frames on Friday to win for the sixth time in his last seven starts. He has allowed three earned runs or fewer in 13 of his last 15 outings and has not issued more than two walks since June 25. The veteran will be careful when facing Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista, who is 4-for-12 with two homers and six walks against Lewis.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Blue Jays are 7-1 in the last eight meetings in Texas.
                      * Over is 4-0 in Lewis' last four home starts vs. Blue Jays.
                      * Rangers are 8-1 in their last nine games vs. a left-handed starter.
                      * Over is 6-0 in Blue Jays last six road games.

                      CONSENSUS:
Sixty-seven percent of users are backing the Blue Jays.

Ellsbury out of Yankees lineup with hip soreness

Center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury was held out of the New York Yankees starting lineup on Wednesday with a sore hip and might not be available to pinch hit.

Ellsbury injured his hip trying to make a diving catch on a fly ball by Houston Astros outfielder Colby Rasmus. Ellsbury did not make the catch and it started a five-run first inning.

After missing the fly ball, manager Joe Girardi said he was not running well over the remainder of a 15-1 loss.

"There was some swelling in it last night," Girardi said before Wednesday's game. "We haven't done any tests. I hope (to have him back Friday) but I can't tell you for sure."

Ellsbury has missed 277 games over the last five seasons, including 43 earlier this season with a sprained right knee.

Ellsbury, in the second-year of a seven-year contract with the Yankees, is batting .278 in 78 games this season.

                        Mets streaking againts division rivals

The New York Mets are dominating the National League East, having won eight straight contests against division rivals.

The Mets will also try for their eighth straight win over the Philadelphia Phillies when they go for a three-game sweep Wednesday night.

To make matter worse for the Phillies, Mets starter Bartolo Colon is 5-0 in his last five starts against the NL East.

The Mets are currently -151 road favorites over the Phillies, who will counter with right-hander Jerad Eickhoff.

The over is hot when the Padres are dogs

The over is 7-0 in the San Diego Padres last seven games when they are listed as an underdog and that will be the case when they visit the Washington Nationals Wednesday night.

Being a pup hasn't stopped the Padres from scoring runs, plating 5.14 runs per game over that seven game stretch, but they are still giving up plenty, allowing 7.57 at the same time.

The Padres and scheduled starter Tyson Ross (14-11 O/U, 3.32 ERA) are currently +165 underdogs for tonight's matchup with the Nats and Gio Gonzalez (14-8 O/U, 3.98 ERA). The total has opened at 7.0 runs.
