    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Mets hit eight HRs last night; took them 12 games to hit their first eight this year.

-- Peyton Manning says he has no feeling in the fingertips on his right hand, which is the hand he throws the football with.

-- Buccaneers were 0-8 at home LY, their first winless home season since 1076.

-- Reggie Miller turned 50 this week; I felt old typing that.

-- Houston Texans named Brian Hoyer starting QB for their opener with KC. .

-- Giants have nine safeties in camp; six of them are hurt; they play the Cowboys in 19 days-- take the over?

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

    13) I swear, Draft Kings might be advertising more on TV this month than the beer companies. Imagine if gambling on sports becomes legal; advertisers will run amuck.

    12) Stock market lost 588 points Monday; they were down 1,069 at one point, but rallied before slipping again in the afternoon. Wild day for the money people.

    11) Cubs and White Sox both played at home Monday; wonder how many people went to both games? Would be a fun thing to know.

    10) Cubs now have 12 walkoff wins; White Sox-Pirates-Angels have 9, Cardinals 8.

    9) Justin Bour of the Marlins was on TV Monday wearing a t-shirt that said "I want abs, but I want a doughnut more." My kind of guy.

    8) Last three years in the NFL, a team that had been 2-14 the year before wound up with a winning season: Texans LY, Chiefs in '13, Colts in '12. Titans/Bucs both went thru last year 2-14-- can you envision either having a winning season this year?

    7) Bucs 25, Bengals 11-- Jameis Winston looked alright, but he is not a mobile QB and he sprained his ankle when hit early in second quarter Monday. He jogged off the field at the end of the game. His first eight passes went to eight different receivers, which is a good thing, but Tampa Bay is also starting two rookies on the offensive line.

    6) Odd fact: Last time an Alabama QB won an NFL game that counted was 1988.

    5) A's 11, Mariners 5-- Solid comeback by the A's, who trailed 5-0, but disappointing day to be an A's fan-- they fired third base coach Mike Gallego, who had been part of the team for almost 20 years, as a player and coach. You do not fire family during the season, it is bad form. Gallego deserves much, much better than this.

    4) Mentioned this in passing couple days ago but it bears repeating: when Milwaukee traded Carlos Gomez to Astros, he was leading major leagues, knocking in 21.3% of runners who were on base when he was at bat. With Houston, he's knocked in 3 of 44 runners; he came up with first/second and no outs last night, and they had him bunt.

You trade for a guy, bat him 4th or 5th, then three weeks later you have him bunting guys over with the game on the line. That not good.

    3) Weird baseball night last night: Detroit led 5-0, Phillies led 7-2, Seattle led 5-0 but all three lost and none of the games were close at the end. Lot of bad relief pitching.

    2) Phillies put veteran OF Jeff Francoeur on waivers, someone claimed him, then the Phillies pulled him back, meaning he won't be traded before the end of the season. Not sure why they wouldn't dump him for a prospect, but thats their business.

    1) I finished reading the book about last year's Washington Nationals; learned a lot, but thought he book was too short, which I guess is a compliment of sorts. Apparently it started out as a 6-part magazine article, but grew into a book. Name of the book is "The Grind" if you like baseball, you'll find it interesting.

Keuchel, Astros struggling mightily on the road

Houston Astros ace Dallas Keuchel has been money at home lately, but it's been a different story on the road.

The 'Stros are a measley 1-6 in Keuchel's previous seven outings away from Minute Maid Park. He'll be on the bump at Yankees Stadium Tuesday against Ivan Nova and the Bronx Bombers.

As of this writing, the line for the game was off the board.

Yankees place LHP Sabathia on DL

The New York Yankees placed left-hander CC Sabathia on the 15-day disabled list Monday with right knee inflammation.

Sabathia exited Sunday's game against the Cleveland Indians with two outs in the top of the third with a sore knee. In July, he had it drained to cope with fluid in the surgically repaired knee and after his last start Sabathia had a cortisone shot.

Sabathia felt the soreness while warming up and it seemed to impact his velocity and control as he tied a season-high with four walks. He gave up a two-run homer to first baseman Carlos Santana with two outs in the first on a pitch clocked at 88 mph.

Mets lights out versus weaker competition

The New York Mets are dominating weaker competition, owning an 18-4 record in their last 22 games against teams with losing records.

New York takes on Philadelphia (50-74) Tuesday in the City of Brotherly Love. Noah Syndergaard and Jerome Williams are the probable starters for the Mets and Phillies, respectively.

The Mets are currently -190 moneyline favorites at online sportsbook Pinnacle Sports.

MLB roundup: Mets blast eight homers in win

PHILADELPHIA -- Second baseman Wilmer Flores hit two of the Mets' franchise-record eight homers and drove in five runs Monday night, lifting New York to a 16-7 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Third baseman David Wright homered in his first at-bat since April 14 for the Mets, who had a season-high run total and set another club record with 14 extra-base hits. They also scored 14 runs or more for the third time in four games.

Wright, absent the previous 115 games due to hamstring and back injuries, went 2-for-5 but committed two errors.

The teams combined to equal the National League record of 11 homers in a game. It was the fifth time that occurred, and the first time since May 17, 1979, when the Chicago Cubs hit six and the Phillies had five in a game Philadelphia won 23-22 in 10 innings.

Flores, catcher Travis D'Arnaud, first baseman Daniel Murphy and right fielder Michael Cuddyer all had three hits, with d'Arnaud contributing a solo homer and a two-run double and Cuddyer and Murphy each hitting homers. Center fielder Juan Lagares and left fielder Yoenis Cespedes also homered for New York, which trailed 7-2 after three innings.

              Yankees 1, Astros 0

NEW YORK -- Carlos Beltran hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting New York to a shutout victory over Houston.

After getting six hits and ending two innings on double plays against right-hander Scott Feldman, the Yankees loaded the bases on three walks by left-hander Oliver Perez (0-1).

Perez opened the ninth by walking Brett Gardner and intentionally walking Alex Rodriguez following a wild pitch. He also walked Brian McCann and was replaced by Chad Qualls. One pitch later, the Yankees had their third walk-off win of the season when Beltran did hit a fly ball to deep center field. Gardner easily trotted home and Beltran was mobbed at first base by his teammates.

              Reds 12, Tigers 5

CINCINNATI -- Brandon Phillips hit a two-run home run, and Eugenio Suarez added a solo shot to spark a 10-run sixth inning, lifting Cincinnati to a victory over Detroit in a makeup game at Great American Ball Park.

Suarez went 3-for-5 with a homer, a double, three RBIs and three runs, and Phillips went 2-for-4 with a homer, a triple and four RBIs as the Reds snapped a nine-game losing streak.

The Tigers, who lost their fourth straight, had to interrupt a seven-game homestand to travel to Cincinnati to make up a June 18 rainout.

              Royals 8, Orioles 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Mike Moustakas homered during a seven-run sixth inning to support right-hander Kris Medlen's first start in nearly two years as Kansas City beat Baltimore.

Moustakas' 14th home run of the year, and third in his last four games, ignited an inning in which the Royals collected seven consecutive two-out hits.

Medlen (2-0), who missed all of the 2014 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, went six innings, allowing three runs on five hits and no walks with six strikeouts to record his first win as a starter since his last appearance for the Atlanta Braves, Sep. 27, 2013.

              Pirates 5, Marlins 2

MIAMI -- Left-hander J.A. Happ pitched six scoreless innings, Andrew McCutchen stroked a two-run double, and Pittsburgh defeated Miami at Marlins Park.

Gregory Blanco had a season-high four hits for Pittsburgh -- just three less than the entire Marlins team. Blanco had two doubles, and one of his singles drove in a run.

The Pirates, who have the second-best record in baseball, have won 10 of their past 12 games. Miami lost its fourth straight game.

              Braves 5, Rockies 3

ATLANTA -- Julio Teheran steadied after giving up two early Colorado homers and Atlanta snapped a seven-game losing streak left from a winless road trip with a victory over the Rockies.

Charlie Blackmon led off the game with a homer and Ben Paulsen connected to start the second inning, but Teheran (9-6) allowed just two other hits in 7 1/3 innings.

Jonny Gomes drove in three runs with a homer and single, and Adonis Garcia also went deep for the Braves off Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa (7-6).

              Cubs 2, Indians 1

CHICAGO — Kris Bryant slugged a game-winning homer in the bottom of the ninth as Chicago beat Cleveland.

Bryant's two-out solo shot to left -- his 20th homer of the season -- gave the Cubs their 12th walk-off victory and concluded a pitcher's duel that ended with neither starter getting the win.

Cubs left-handed starter Jon Lester was one out away from a 1-0 shutout win but gave up run-scoring single to Carlos Santana, scoring pinch runner Abraham Almonte with the tying run.

Red Sox 5, White Sox 4

CHICAGO -- Rusney Castillo went 3-for-4 with a career-high five RBIs to lead Boston to a win against Chicago.

Castillo singled, doubled and homered to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Boston earned its fifth win in the past seven games. Chicago lost its second consecutive game after winning the previous three.

Boston right-hander Joe Kelly (7-6) picked up the victory after limiting White Sox hitters to two runs on five hits in 7 1/3 innings. Kelly has won each of his past five starts.

              A's 11, Mariners 5

SEATTLE -- Danny Valencia gave Oakland its first lead with a two-run homer in the fifth inning, and the Athletics rallied from a five-run deficit on the way to beating Seattle.

The A's pounded Seattle's Hisashi Iwakuma in his first home start since throwing a no-hitter at Safeco Field on Aug. 12. Iwakuma (5-3) gave up seven runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings, with almost all the damage coming in a seven-run fifth inning.

Oakland right-hander Edward Mujica (3-4) earned the win after pitching two innings of relief. The A's had to use five pitchers because starter Felix Doubront took a line drive off his foot in the first inning and lasted just two innings.

              Cardinals 5, Diamondbacks 3

PHOENIX -- Matt Carpenter homered and Yadier Molina hit a two-run single to cap a three-run seventh inning in St. Louis' victory over Arizona at Chase Field.

Carpenter hit his 19th homer of the season in the third inning and right-hander Lance Lynn (10-8) gave up two runs in six innings to become the Cardinals' fourth 10-game winner.

David Peralta had four of Arizona's 14 hits and drove in a run with a single in the ninth inning, but St. Louis turned double plays in four consecutive innings starting in the third to limit the damage.

Game of the Day: Cubs at Giants
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Chicago Cubs are 21-5 in their last 26 overall heading into Tuesday's date with the San Francisco Giants.

Chicago Cubs at San Francisco Giants (+136, 6.5)

A day off came at an opportune time for the San Francisco Giants, who return home from a 2-5 road trip to begin a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. Having had the previous day to rest could prove beneficial as the Giants attempt to slow down the red-hot Cubs, who improved to 20-4 over their last 24 games when Kris Bryant belted a walk-off homer in Monday’s 2-1 win over Cleveland.

Bryant is batting .347 with six home runs in his last 20 games for the Cubs, who have won five straight and hold a 6 1/2-game lead over the Giants for the second National League wild-card spot. Chicago plays 17 of its next 23 games away from Wrigley Field and will be without right fielder Jorge Soler (oblique) and reliever Jason Motte (shoulder) for the next 3-4 weeks as both were placed on the disabled list Monday. The injury bug also has affected the Giants, who have struggled offensively without right fielder Hunter Pence (oblique) and second baseman Joe Panik (back). The Giants trail the Dodgers by 1 1/2 games in the NL West and need more production from Buster Posey, who is hitting .128 since Aug. 14.

                  TV:
10:15 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), CSN Bay Area (San Francisco)

                  LINE HISTORY:
The Giants opened in the +115 range but are now around +136. The total has remained at 6.5.

                  INJURY REPORT:
Cubs - 2B Addison Russell (Questionable, groin), RF Jorge Soler (15-day DL, oblique). Giants - CF Angel Pagan (15-day DL, knee), RF Hunter Pence (15-day DL, oblique), 2B Joe Panik (15-day DL, back).

                  WEATHER:
Temperatures will be in the low-60s under partly cloudy skies. Wind will blow out to centerfield at around 14 miles per hour.

                  WHAT CAPPERS SAY:
"In a major blow, the Giants were forced to put outfielder Hunter Pence on the DL for the third time this season with an oblique strain. The Giants are 34-18 in games in which Pence has played (vs. 32-40 without him)."

                  PITCHING MATCHUP:
Cubs RH Jake Arrieta (15-6, 2.30 ERA) vs. Giants RH Matt Cain (2-3, 5.66)

Arrieta improved to 9-1 in his last 12 starts with another stellar outing on Thursday, when he struck out seven over six scoreless innings of a 7-1 win over Atlanta. “He’s one of the best I’ve caught,” Cubs catcher Miguel Montero told reporters. “He’s a competitor. He’s a gamer. You can see the fire.” Arrieta held San Francisco scoreless over 7 2/3 frames on Aug. 9 and is 2-1 with a 2.18 ERA in three career outings against the Giants.

Cain held St. Louis to two runs in six innings on Wednesday after going 0-2 with an 8.24 ERA in his previous four starts. The 30-year-old has reason to be encouraged after retiring 11 of the final 13 batters he faced. Anthony Rizzo is 2-for-18 with eight strikeouts against Cain, who is 6-3 with a 2.72 ERA in 16 career starts versus Chicago but 4-0 with a 1.23 ERA over his last six at home in the all-time series.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Cubs are 4-0 in the last four meetings.
                  * Under is 9-1-1 in the last 11 meetings in San Francisco.
                  * Cubs are 21-5 in their last 26 overall.
                  * Giants are 13-3 in their last 16 games as a home underdog.

                  CONSENSUS:
Fifty-two percent of users are backing the visiting Cubs.

Syndergaard a different pitcher away from home

New York Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard has been sensational in his home starts this season. Unfortunately, he's been the exact opposite on the road.

In nine road starts, Syndergaard is 0-5 with a 5.05 ERA. The Mets have gone just 1-8 in those nine starts. Their lone win came against the Los Angeles Dodgers back on July 3.

The 22-year-old looks to rebound versus Philadelphia, against which he scattered six hits in 7 1/3 frames en route to a 7-0 rout May 27.

Ripperger is no friend to Red Sox bettors

The Boston Red Sox have gone 0-5 in their last five ball games with Mark Ripperger behind home plate. That's exactly where Ripperger will be when the Sox tangle with the Chicago White Sox Tuesday evening.

That string of games dates back to 2011 and includes one game this year. Ripperger was calling balls and strikes when the Red Sox lost 10-8 to the Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park back on Aug. 16.

Wade Miley is expected to get the ball for the Red Sox (+118) while Jose Quintana is probable to start for the Pale Hose (-128).

Astros not happy to see Cooper behind the plate

The Houston Astros are just 1-12 in the last 13 games where Eric Cooper has been calling balls and strikes and that is exactly where he will be when the Astros visit the New York Yankees Tuesday.

The Astros are hoping that whomever is behind the plate doesn't matter Dallas Keuchel (10-15 O/U), 2.37 ERA) as he faces off against the Yankees Ivan Nova (2-7 O/U, 3.72 ERA). The Astros are currently -123 favorites with a total of 7.5.

Angels have been abysmal away from home recently

The Los Angeles Angels have gone 1-12 in their last 13 ball games away from home heading into their recent nine-game trip starting in Detroit Tuesday.

The lone road win came at the Kansas City Royals back on Aug. 13 when the Halos prevailed 7-6.

On their current road trip, the Angels play three games in Detroit, followed by three in Cleveland and three in Oakland.

Jered Weaver gets the ball for the Angels (-113) on Tuesday as the Tigers (+104) are expected to counter with Alfredo Simon.

The over is cashing when the Padres are dogs

The over is 6-0 in the San Diego Padres last six games when they are listed as an underdog and that will be the case when they visit the Washington Nationals Tuesday night.

Being a pup hasn't stopped the Padres from scoring runs, plating 5.5 runs per game over that six game stretch, but they are still giving up plenty, allowing 7.5 at the same time.

The Padres and scheduled starter James Shields (18-7 O/U, 3.74 ERA) are currently +156 underdogs for tonight's matchup with the Nats and Stephen Strasburgh (8-8 O/U, 4.22 ERA).

Favorites cash in at a rate of 80 percent Monday

Major League Baseball favorites went 8-2 in the 10 games on Monday's board to cash in at a rate of 80 percent on the day.

The only underdogs to cash as winners on the day were the Boston Red Sox (+115) winning 5-4 at the Chicago White Sox and the Oakland A's (+149) who trumped the Seattle Mariners 11-5.

Season to date, favorites are now 1049-792 - good enough to cash in at a rate of 56.98 percent.

Wood has floundered since joining Dodgers

Alex Wood has not been looking his best since joining the LA Dodgers with the club going 1-3 in his four starts so far. Since joining the Dodgers, Wood has a 5.01 ERA while surrendering 23 hits and 13 runs over 23.1 innings.

On the season as a whole, between the Dodgers and Braves, Wood is 8-8 with a 3.79 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP.

The Dodgers are currently -146 when they visit Cincinnati Tuesday.

Under is cashing in Duffy's starts

The under is 9-1 in Danny Duffy's last 10 starts for the Kansas City Royals, with Duffy pitching to a 3.28 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP in those 10 starts.

The Royals host Miguel Gonzalez (4.73 ERA, 12-11 O/U) and the Baltimore Orioles Tuesday night with a total currently at 7.5 runs.

August has not been kind to Robbie Ray

Robbie Ray has taken to the mound for the Arizona Diamondbacks on four occasions this August, with the left-hander losing each start.

Ray is 0-4 with a 5.48 ERA while allowing opponents to hit .321 so far this month. Through 21.1 innings pitched, Ray has surrendered 13 earned runs with three home runs.

The D-Backs are currently +112 when they host the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday.

Pirates getting the job done behind Morton

The Pittsburgh Pirates are coming to play when Charlie Morton takes the mound, winning his last five starts with a combined score of 34-16.

Morton is helping his own cause as well, pitching to a 2.94 ERA with 35 strikeouts to just 10 walks in those five outings.

Morton takes the mound on the road in Miami to take on Brad Hand and the Marlins. The Pirates are currently -166 favorites with a total of 8.0.

Mariners continue to falter when Montgomery starts

The Seattle Mariners have lost their past eight starts when leftie Mike Montgomery takes to the mound. In that time, Montgomery has allowed four earned runs per outing.

Montgomery is 4-6 with a 4.16 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP this season.

The Mariners are currently -117 when they host the Oakland A's Tuesday.

Twins losing when Santana starts as pitcher struggles

The Minnesota Twins have dropped their past five games when Ervin Santana gets the ball to start the game. Santana is 0-4 with a 8.46 ERA in his past five starts, which is a big reason why the Twins are losing those games.

Santana was suspended for the first 80 games of the season after testing positive for PED's. In his shortened season Santana has posted a 2-4 record with a 5.53 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP.

The Twins are currently +132 when they visit the Tampa Bay Rays Tuesday.

Red Sox and White Sox cashing over tickets this season

The Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox have met five times this season, with the over cashing in each of those contests. SO far this season, the two teams have combined for 12.2 runs per game when they clash.

Boston has been one of the top over teams in baseball this season with a 66-53-5 over/under record, which is the opposite of the White Sox who hold a 58-61-4 O/U mark.

The total is currently set at 8.0 when these two teams met Tuesday.

Royals have been dominating the Orioles

The Kansas City Royals have taken the past seven contests against the Baltimore Orioles. The Royals have outscored the O's by an average of two runs per game during that span.

The Orioles have also long their past five games while allowing an average of 6.8 runs per game.

The Royals are currently -133 when they host the O's Tuesday.

Rays do not fare well following an off day

The Tampa Bay Rays have gone just 2-8 in their previous 10 ball games following an off day. The Rays are in this exact spot when they host the Minnesota Twins Tuesday evening at Tropicana Field after a day off Monday.

The Rays lost their last game following an off day when they were beaten by 5-3 by the Texas Rangers on Aug. 14 after getting the 13th off.

The Rays (-143) open a three-game set at the Trop with Nathan Karns expected to get the ball. The Twins (+132) are expected to start Ervin Santana.
