    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Dodgers were 23-4 when Clayton Kershaw started LY; they're 13-12 this year- they've lost 10 of their last 12 road tilts, went 0-5 at Oakland/Houston this week.

    -- Astros' 7-3 homestand included four walk-off wins and a no-hitter.

-- Packers lose WR Nelson (knee); Steelers lost C Pouncey (ankle). Big losses.

-- Tennessee Titans open with road games at Tampa Bay/Cleveland, then don't play another road game until Week 8.

-- Ttians' WR Kendall Wright was targeted with 93 passes LY, he caught 56 of them, with zero drops. He should better now that the Titans have Mariota at QB.

-- For what it is worth, Viking coach Mike Zimmer is 7-0 in exhibition games.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend......

    13) Guy named Daniel Rodriguez is returning punts for the Rams this summer; he won't make the team, but he has already earned a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star in the war in the Middle East and has written a book called Rise, about his experiences. When you have been in a war, returning punts probably isn't that big of a deal.

    12) Davis Love III won the Greater Greensboro Open in 1992, then again in 2006; this weekend, at age 51, he won it again, the third-oldest guy to win a PGA event. Love is a North Carolina alum; he introduced Michael Jordan to golf way back when.

    11) NHL didn't punt nets up between the rink and the stands until someone got hit by a puck and died; hopefully baseball will wise up and put nets up at least as far as the dugouts go. Balls, broken bats fly i the stands; someone is going to get killed.

    10) Unintended consequence of instant replay in baseball; sliding has become much more important than it used to be. Used to be if the runner beat the ball, he was safe, simple as that; now if he comes off the base for a split-second, he will be called out, if the fielder keeps the glove on him throughout the slide.

    9) Braves TV announcers were talking all weekend about how the Cubs tailored the dirt in front of home plate to suit that day's pitcher. Jason Hammel is pitching? Dirt is going to be soft, so ground balls stay in the infield. Dan Haren is pitching? Dirt will be hard; he gets mostly fly ball outs. It is called home field advantage.

    8) As I type this, over 11,500 firefighters are fighting 15 wildfires all over the state of California. Firemen are tough guys; they do dangerous, unglamorous work.

    7) Golfer Jason Gore's season was going to be over, but his 2nd place finish jumped him from 166th to 98th in the FedEx Cup standings, so he makes the playoffs.

    6) Angels got pummeled by Toronto all weekend; you know a game is lost when the home announcers are talking about how they shot spitballs in grade school, when the game is still in only the fifth inning. Victor Rojas used the tubing of a Bic pen, rather than a straw. More durable, I guess.

    5) Ohio State is the first-ever unanimous #1 team in the AP preseason football poll, and they have been doing this since 1950. Lot of pressure on the Buckeyes this season.

    4) Florida State is going to be down this year in football; they almost have to be; they lost their QB, four of five starters on OL, had six other guys drafted by the NFL.

    3) Chris Mullin is working hard on his recruiting; St John's landed 6-8 Kassoum Yakme who is considered an excellent defender. They're not sure if he'll be eligible this coming season or next year, but they are convinced he will help, once he is eligible.

    2) Damaging weekend for the Orioles, losing four in a row at home to the Twins, who are now 7-0 against Baltimore this season. Orioles are only two games behind Texas in the Wild Card standings; those seven losses to the Twins really hurt.

    1) If the baseball playoffs started Monday morning, teams would be:
NL-- Mets-Cardinals-Dodgers. Wild Card: Cubs @ Pirates
AL-- Blue Jays-Royals-Astros. Wild Card: Rangers @ Bronx.

Under trending when Astros and Yankees collide

When the New York Yankees and Houston Astros get together, low-scoring games tend to follow.

The Under is 11-2 in the last 13 meetings between the two clubs. They'll renew acquaintances in the Bronx Monday with Scott Feldman and Nathan Eovaldi scheduled to start for the Astros and Yankees, respectively.

The total for the game is currently off the board at sportsbooks.

Indians a poor bet as road dogs behind Kluber

When pegged as underdogs on the road, the Cleveland Indians are a paltry 1-6 in Corey Kluber's last seven starts.

Cleveland finds themselves in that ballpark once again Monday (+117) opposite Jon Lester and the Chicago Cubs.

At the time of writing, the total hadn't hit the board.

Royals' Medlen to make first start since 2013 Monday

Kris Medlen is scheduled to make his first start since 2013 for the Kansas City Royals versus the Baltimore Orioles on Monday.

Since recovering from Tommy John Surgery, Medlen has only pitched out of the bullpen for the Royals. The 29-year-old is replacing the ineffective Jeremy Guthrie, who was originally slated to get the nod before the decision was made by manager New Yost.

As of this writing, the line and total for the game were off the board.

Yankees LHP Sabathia exits with knee injury

NEW YORK -- New York Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia exited Sunday's game with two outs in the top of the third inning with a right knee injury.

Sabathia left his 24th start of the season after getting a strikeout of Cleveland Indians catcher Yan Gomes. After getting Gomes on a fastball clocked at 91 mph by the Yankee Stadium scoreboard, trainer Steve Donahue and manager Joe Girardi came out.

The Yankees said Sabathia had right knee pain and sent him for an MRI and examination by team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad.

Sabathia, who has a 4-9 record and a 5.27 ERA, had his right knee drained twice in early July. Last year, he did not pitch after May 10 and had surgery July 23.

Before leaving, Sabathia allowed a two-run homer to first baseman Carlos Santana in the first inning among four hits.

            Diamondbacks recall LHP Reynolds

The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled left-hander Matt Reynolds from Triple-A Reno on Sunday.

Reynolds, 30, has not pitched in the major leagues since June 9, 2013, after missing all of 2014 due to Tommy John surgery. In 45 games with Reno this season, he is 3-6 with a 5.58 ERA in 50 innings.

Hessler, 26, is 0-1 with a 15.19 ERA in eight games over 5 1/3 innings with Arizona this season. He made his major league debut on Aug. 8.

Mariners add Kensing, Elias to roster

The Seattle Mariners selected the contract of right-hander Logan Kensing from Tacoma on Sunday and recalled left-hander Roenis Elias from the Triple-A club.

The Mariners also designated right-hander Fernando Rodney for assignment, optioned right-hander Danny Farquhar to Triple-A and sent left-hander James Paxton on a rehab assignment to Tacoma.

Kensing and Elias were active for Sunday's series finale against the the Chicago White Sox at Safeco Field.

Paxton was scheduled to start for Tacoma on Sunday. He has been on the disabled list since May 29 with a strained tendon in his left middle finger (throwing hand).

Kensing, 33, returns to the major leagues for the first time since 2013. He has made 135 career appearances in the majors with the Miami Marlins (2004-2009), Washington Nationals (2009) and Colorado Rockies (2013).

            Blue Jays recall C Thole

The Toronto Blue Jays recalled catcher Josh Thole from Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday.

Thole was sent down to the minors in early June after batting .269 in nine games for Toronto.

Thole has experience catching knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, who was scheduled to start Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels.

To clear room on the roster, first baseman Matt Hague was optioned to Triple-A.

            Cardinals recall INF Garcia

The St. Louis Cardinals recalled infielder Greg Garcia from Triple-A Memphis on Sunday.

Left-handed pitcher Tyler Lyons was optioned to Memphis following Saturday night's game at San Diego.

Garcia, 25, was batting .294 with 36 RBIs through 94 games for Memphis, playing primarily at shortstop with starts at third base and second base. He is making his third appearance with St. Louis and batted .350 (7-for-20) in 16 games in his previous games with the Cards this season.

Lyons, 27, had been with St. Louis since a recall on Aug. 7, his fourth time with the big-league club. During his most recent stint, he made three relief appearances in 7 2/3 innings.

Game of the Day: Astros at Yankees
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jason Castro's walk-off home run in the 10th inning gave the Astros a 3-2 win and three-game sweep versus the Dodgers.

Houston Astros at New York Yankees (-132, 8)

The Houston Astros still aren’t hitting very well, but the pitching is more than making up for the offensive slump. The Astros will try to take some of the pressure off their pitching staff when they visit the New York Yankees on Monday for the opener of a key three-game series.

Houston leads the American League West by four games over the Texas Rangers after pulling off a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 3-2 win on Jason Castro’s walk-off homer in the 10th inning on Sunday. That marked the seventh straight game in which the Astros failed to score more than three runs, but they are 5-2 in that span. The Yankees dropped a 4-3 decision on Sunday and lost three of four to the Cleveland Indians over the weekend to fall a half-game behind the Toronto Blue Jays for first place in the AL East. New York will send Houston native Nathan Eovaldi to the mound while the Astros try to improve upon a 24-35 road record behind veteran Scott Feldman.

                TV:
7:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, ROOT (Houston), WPIX (New York)

                LINE HISTORY:
The Yankees opened around -141 but are now -132. The total remains at the opening number of 8.

                INJURY REPORT:
Astros - 3B Jed Lowrie (Doubtful, thumb), RF George Springer (15-day DL, wrist). Yankees - 1B Mark Teixeira (Doubtful, shin).

                WEATHER:
Temperatures will be in the high-70s under parly cloudy skies. Wind will blow from rightfield to leftfield at around 10 miles per hour.

                WHAT CAPPERS SAY:
"Another no-hitter from an unlikely source as recent Astros pick-up Mike Fiers threw a no-no against a very good Dodgers team on Saturday. This team is clicking on all cylinders right now, especially the pitching, which allowed just eight runs in six games, dating back to August 18. The Yanks had a great opportunity to increase their lead in the AL East, playing two sub-.500 teams at home last week. But they didn't take full advantage. After sweeping the Twins in the first three games, New York went on to lose three of four to the Indians. Thus, the Jays are back in first place."

                PITCHING MATCHUP:
Astros RH Scott Feldman (5-5, 4.05 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Nathan Eovaldi (13-2, 4.24)

Feldman has allowed three or fewer runs in each of his last five starts and scattered two runs and nine hits over seven innings in a no-decision against Tampa Bay on Tuesday. The 32-year-old is 1-0 in his last five outings, with the lone triumph coming with six scoreless innings at San Francisco on Aug. 12. Feldman is 5-4 with a 3.45 ERA in 12 career games – 10 starts – against New York.

Eovaldi has not lost since getting ripped for eight runs in two-thirds of an inning at Miami on June 16 and is coming off a win over Minnesota on Wednesday. The Texan was reached for three runs on four hits and a pair of walks while striking out eight – his most k’s since punching out nine at Baltimore on April 15. Eovaldi allowed two runs and five hits in six innings to earn a win at Houston on June 26.

                TRENDS:

                * Under is 11-2 in the last 13 meetings.
                * Under is 6-0 in Astros last six overall.
                * Yankees are 7-1 in Eovaldi's last eight starts as a favorite.
                * Astros are 5-1 in their last six overall.

                CONSENSUS:
Sixty-four percent of bettors are backing the Yankees.

The Atlanta Braves left fielder homered from the left and right sides in the same game on Saturday and added three hits and two RBIs on Sunday in the Braves' 9-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs.

Acquired from the Cleveland Indians in an Aug. 7 trade, Swisher was batting just .198 at the time.

By Sunday, he had improved to .273 through 12 games with the Braves.

"He got an opportunity last night and did a nice job," said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez. "Same thing today carried over. He gives you good at-bats from both sides of the plate, gives you good energy. (And) so far in left field he's done OK."

On Saturday, he clubbed a home run as a left-handed batter in the second inning and added another in the fifth as a right-handed batter.

Swisher went 6-for-10 with a double, two home runs, two runs scored and six RBIs in the four-game series with the Cubs.

                  Sox starter Danks' struggles continue

The road struggles of White Sox starter John Danks continued on Sunday, when the 30-year-old starter got roughed up in unfriendly confines once again.

His trip to Seattle included an eight-hit, seven-run outing that left Danks staring at a 6.38 ERA on the road this season. He is now 2-8 in road games, as compared to a 4-3 record and 3.45 ERA at home.

Danks hasn't won a game on the road since May 31, when he threw a complete-game shutout at Houston. Since then, he has gone 0-5 with a 7.60 ERA away from U.S. Cellular Field.

                  Rockies cut ties with Betancourt

The Colorado Rockies retooled their overworked bullpen with an eye toward 2016 and cut ties with Rafael Betancourt, 40, who had been a stalwart reliever for them since 2009.

In 14-9 losses to the Mets on both Friday and Saturday, the Rockies' relievers had to pitch 14 1/3 innings and allowed 10 runs. Entering Sunday, the Rockies' bullpen was 0-6 with a 10.26 ERA (40 1/3 innings, 46 earned runs) in their previous 11 games.

With an eye to the future, the Rockies recalled right-hander Jairo Diaz and selected the contract of right-hander Simon Castro from Triple-A Albuquerque. They give the Rockies two more power arms in their bullpen.

To make room for them, reliever Justin Miller was optioned to Albuquerque and Betancourt, 40, was designated for assignment. He returned this season after missing all of 2014 following Tommy John surgery in September 2013.

No case of the Mondays for Lynn, Cardinals

Monday, the most universally disliked day of the week, has been kind to St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Lance Lynn as of late.

In Lynn's last 12 Monday starts, the Cards are 11-1. He's slated to get the ball tonight versus Robbie Ray and the Arizona Diamondbacks in the desert.

St. Louis is presently in the -120 ballpark at sportsbooks.

MLB betting cheat sheet: Overs aplenty at Safeco Field
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Mariners have seen the total go over at a rate of 20-5-3 in their last 28 home games.

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the mid-week major-league schedule:

                      Desert Heat

The Arizona Diamondbacks are averaging over 6.5 runs per game, batting .322 since July 25th. They've won 18-of-28 games during that span, and return home from a successful road trip to host the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals lost 2-of-3 in San Diego, and could be in for a tough series against a hot Diamondbacks team.

                      Runs At Wrigley

The Cubs are on a roll, winners of 13 of their last 16. They come off a four game sweep of the Braves at Wrigley, out-scoring Atlanta 40-14 in those games. They've gone over the total in six of their last seven home games, and that trend could continue in the Windy City as they host the Indians on Monday.

                      Blue Jays Battery

The Jays broke another record this weekend, scoring the most runs in a three game series in club history (36) in a sweep of the Angels in Anaheim. Toronto has seized the top spot in the AL East, moving a half game up on the Yankees. The Jays will be in Texas this week, and you should expect fireworks in Arlington.

                      Hitting Notes

*Josh Donaldson was 4-for-5 with a double, a home run and six RBIs on Saturday, helping the Jays beat the Angels by a score of 15-3 in Anaheim. He became the first player in the majors to reach 100 RBIs, and he second on the American League with 34 home runs.

*Yoenis Cespedes is proving to be a valuable acquisition for the Mets, and he had himself quite a series in Colorado over the weekend. Cespedes was 7-for-15 with three home runs and eight RBIs in a three game sweep of the Rockies.

                      Pitching Notes

*Madison Bumgarner did it again on Friday, hitting another home run in a win over the Pirates in Pittsburgh. He had a double, a home run and a pair of RBIs in his previous start.

*Mike Fiers tossed a no-hitter at home versus the Dodgers on Friday, striking out 10 in a 3-0 win. He's now 1-0 with a 2.42 ERA in four starts since coming over from Milwaukee. His next start comes on the road in Minnesota on Friday.

                      Totals Streak

We think of Safeco as one of the most pitcher friendly parks in the majors, but that hasn't been the case lately. The Mariners have seen the total go over at a rate of 20-5-3 in their last 28 home games. Their bullpen can take a lot of the blame, only two teams in the majors (Oakland and Colorado) rank worse than the Mariners who's releivers own a 4.45 ERA this season.

                      Injury Notes

*David Wright is set to return to the lineup for the Mets on Monday as they face the Phillies. He's batting .433 with a home run and eight RBIs in 30 career at bats versus Aaron Harang, who will start on Thursday.

*C.C. Sabathia left Sunday's game with a knee injury, and he' scheduled to have an MRI on Monday. With a record of 4-9 with a 5.27 ERA, the Yankees aren't likely to rush him back.

                      Weather Notes:

*For Monday night's Boston Red Sox-Chicago White Sox matchup at U.S. Cellular Field, winds of 13 mph blowing out to right field are expected.

*Gusts of 13 mph are expected at AT&T Park Tuesday for the Giants' tilt with the Chicago Cubs.

Monday's NFL Week 2 preseason betting primer

The second week of the NFL preseason comes to a close with Cincinnati Bengals visiting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the only game on the schedule on Monday.

Cincinnati Bengals at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-2.5, 40)

                        * According to ESPN, we can probably expect to see Bengals' starting quarterback Andy Dalton in the game for the first quarter. Probable to enter the game next will be AJ McCarron. McCarron was the 2013 Heisman Trophy runner up to Bucs' QB Jameis Winston.

                        * According to Scott Smith of Buccaneers.com, expect a faster start from rookie quarterback Jameis Winston and the Tampa Bay offense Monday. "That's what we want to do," said Lovie Smith. "We have to as a team. Of course Jameis is a part of that. Last time we played Cincinnati [during the 2014 regular season] it was a fast start. Defensively we got a takeaway on the first play of the game. Yes, as a football team, we need to start faster.
